No coach, just a few books and he became a GM! - Bangladesh's Enamul Hossain

  • Bangladesh chess has five grandmasters. The last of them was GM Enamul Hossain who became a GM in 2008. Since then the country is still searching for his 6th GM.
In a country where becoming a GM is not at all easy, how did Enamul become one? Apart from one training camp that he has had with Krasenkow as the member of Bangladeshi team for the Olympiad, Enamul has never worked with a coach. He is a self-made player. When he was young, there was a dearth of books in Bangladesh. In such a situation he read Fischer's my 60 memorable games again and again and learnt a lot out of it.
This is a story of a soft-spoken, humble man who doesn't like to blow his own trumpet. Yet, his achievements speak for himself. With the right backing and support, Enamul could have been a world class GM. Such was his talent.

For a country that produced the first ever chess GM in the subcontinent, Bangladesh has fallen behind a lot in chess development. The main issue is the lack of chess culture at school level, but the Federation also has to take some blame. Hats off to the five GMs that have come out of the country.

Thanks for your kind words. We basically put all our eggs in cricket basket and bin all the sports that we could have potentially thrived in. We used to have a vibrant football and ground hockey scene too albeit centered in Dhaka back in the 90s and early 2000s, lost that too. And our corrupt officials take out money from every sports sector and I wouldn't be surprised at all if cricket suffers the same fate as other sports.

I know some people who could've been very strong players if they had the opportunity. The main problem is that chess isn't mainstream so the federation and players don't get sponsors. Popularization of chess is the biggest problem we need to solve.

I paid to have a online coach for about 4 months doing a hour lesson once a week. My rating did increase and I improved but I honestly think you can improve almost as much with a good study plan, consistently sticking to the program you set. Do tactics daily, play daily and study.

GM Igors Rausis was coach of Razib, Rakib, Zia, Rifat. They became GM for this coach. This is real. Igors Rausis provide training 4/5 years before they become GM.

Igors Rausis provided training for Bangladesh team in 2000, 2002, 2008, and 2018 as Chess Olympiad preparation. Enamul Hossian was already an IM before getting the training from Igors. I don't think Enamul is intentionally hiding this fact, rather just providing the info about the path of being a chess player. It is also the fact that he never had a personal trainer.

There is not a chess culture like that of India as there was Bishwanath Anand, who out of rage, produced 100k or more GMs. There is good cricket going on, Football not bad(recently drawn against Lebanon (101 rank) compared to Bangladesh(190)). Even Badminton going so well(not international but local, especially in Winter). SAF games is not also a bad one.
Who cares?? Chess is such a serious brain f*ck
