Wife knocked a WD Passport disk to the floor mid backup after I'd archived a load of stuff to it. This has worked for me and allowed me to mount it again to get the data back. Life saver!! Thank you dude so much.
Just a quick tip: if you are really worried about dust, or are in such a dusty area that you feel it might be a serious issue, one way to minimize dust is to first run a hot shower with the door to the bathroom closed, until the room is rather steamy. Turn off the shower and then wait until the air clears of steam. Then use that room to disassemble the drive. The water particles in the steam from the shower accumulate around dust and hair particles floating in the air until they are too heavy to remain suspended, at which point they fall out of the air. While this will not get you a 100% clean room, it will greatly reduce dust in the air, and thus dust that can accumulate on your platter.

Worked like a charm! Laptop was dropped so hard that the plastic housing was cracked in multiple spots. Wouldn't boot into OS, and wasn't being recognized by any computer when connected via USB. Opened her up, did exactly what this video showed, and it booted up right away when re-connected! Quick $80 repair. Thanks for the video!
I was under the impression that opening up a HDD without a clean room was certain doom but I had nothing to lose so I gave it a try. I have a Samsung HDD that I use purely for music and storage. Unfortunately I had dropped it and caused the head to stick to the platter. This did the trick, thank you!
I put my music on a flash drive and have it hooked up to my router USB and stream all my music from the flash drive. If you play a lot of music don't put it on the hard drive, the hard drives seeks too many times for music. There are no moving Parts with a flash drive compared to a hard drive
I dropped our external hard drive and was getting the click of death. This totally did the trick and allowed us to retrieve our data off the drive. Thank you!
I just want to say a big thank you! I was very skeptical about the fact that an hard disk open in a "normal" environment could continue to work properly. Hard disk repair experts are rather insistent in saying that if anyone opens an hard drive in a non-protected atmosphere, the damage would be irreparable. Instead I saw the video and decided to try. Within minutes I recovered 1TB of material from an hard drive that I thought was irreparable. 1TB of my wife's data, so yes, you saved my life :D no matter how important data really was!

Thanks for the help! You saved my external HDD! I'd like to point out I had no Torx in the right size (I believe I needed a T8 or T6, but only had T10+), so I used a 1.8mm flat screwdriver (you can get those on the larger hardware stores, if you're stuck where electronic repair shops are closed or far away), in one of the little watchmaker screwdriver sets, I used a plier to hold it firmly enough and to be able to rotate it, because my hands and grip were not enough. If someone comes across a similar problem, this might help!
Thank you for posting this video. My son dropped my wd passport ultra 2tb hdd and it stopped working. I had my hubby buy the T6 torx screwdriver from home depot, unscrewed the hdd, and sure enough the head was stuck. I twisted the platter counter clock wise slowly while moving the arm slowly off the platter, put the hdd back together and it's working beautifully now.

Cheers mate. Remote 1TB hd not showing at all on laptop. A search led me here and it was the head stuck on the platter. Followed your instructions and all sorted. I used this method on an 1.5TB Seagate drive. that was beeping constantly and causing the computer to hang all the time. The primary hard drive in an SSD thank goodness. But all my music, games and movie were on the Seagate drive. I popped the top off and gently moved the heads back and forward a few times. and screwed it back together. Once I powered it up windows with the drive re-installed it was detecting errors on the hard drive it ran the repair utility. And was fine after that no more beeping and I could read for it. However I do not know if I have caused damaged I have not tried writing to the hard drive the damage could be in a unpopulated part of the drive. I only recommend this method if you have nothing to lose, if the hard drive is old or out of warranty otherwise send the thing back. To most people the data on the hard drive is worth more then the drive its self. You should get a new had drive as soon as possible and transfer all the data off it while it still works.
This worked for me too after I dropped my portable hard drive, it was making 3 soft clicking sounds. I opened it up, reset the heads and was able to recover most of the data and also reformat the drive. Amazingly, even though it fell from the desk to the floor, there was no visible damage to the platter like in your other video. Thanks!

I think he was using a figure of speech. Perhaps what he meant was anything of more than a casual value, e.g.: like if you're a freelance photographer, have your stuff on a disc that gets backed up but you're traveling, didn't yet back up, and the traveling HD crashes!! and now you're home and have lost the whole shoot, ouch. He says take that to the pros. Still: This whole opening thing has me baffled w/ so many saying it's overwhelmingly likely to ruin the platter w/ my info ; what's your take?

Hey guys, I had a seagate external harddrive which made a similar sound when i connected it to the usb3 port and I tried different cable different computer, even i removed the hdd inside of it and used a sata to usb3 adapter still did that beeping and did not work. Then I decided to give this method a try and it really worked! thank you man you are a hero!

Abraham you saved my tail. An editing client's hard drive failed with a week's worth of (expensive) footage on it. I saw your video, offered to fix it for them and they gave me the go ahead. Inside it looked exactly as you demonstrated. I moved the head back the start position and it worked flawlessly. Currently backing up the footage now. This is the report that a technician gave me after he "inspected" the drive. Report: We have finished examining all physical and logical components of your storage media. Based on your situation we have determined that your media has sustained physical damage. The main cause of damage is that the storage media does not spin up due to a malfunction in the engine. For the recovery process we need to replace the whole engine unit and read write unit. After the engine transplant we will need re install the read write unit and recalibrate the heads. When the storage media spins up we need to read out all data on a sector level and reconstruct the complete file system. Afterwards we will mount the data onto an offline server in order to check the integrity of your data(partitions, directories and the different file types). The repairs will need to take place in a clean room environment. Technicians Notes: Motor is wedged, heads not in parking position, no other visible damage inside, need to explant disks and possibly heads,
My hard drive would attempt to spin up...once I reset the heads, it spun without any problems. Your problem sounds much worse and expensive to repair, but sounds like the data should be intact and recoverable since the plates are intact
So today my external harddrive stopped functioning. Naturally I regularly backup my data so there was only data from a couple days on it. Still quite annoying to have lost that ofcourse. This trick worked like a charm. Thanks Abraham!

However, I already know how to complete the process demonstrated in this video... yet here i am... Even i cant explain why, or how, i got here. That's just the pure nature of TH-cam. I just saw your video and I followed your steps and it worked. My HDD now starts and shows in my computer but still there is a clicking sound. So I decided to get my data before it dies on me again, but every time I select a folder to copy, the process gets toward starting copying and then suddenly stops. Any idea of what can be done further to get the data?

Toasted that's the problem, I don't know if my hardrive doesn't work because my laptop freezes on the Samsung logo screen with the f2 and f4 buttons which both are unresponsive.

I have watched quite a few recovery data videos. *Why is it that almost every single video is about a Seagate drive going bad?* I have had a Seagate 2.5 inch drive *go bad in 1 1/2 an year* and the *new one going bad in 2 years,* I will never buy a Seagate again.

For anyone with a Macbook (Pro) with a Seagate (Momentus): there are 2 metallic labels underneath the regular white label that needed to be peeled off before a circular indentation becomes visible, through which that last screw can be reached Other than that, this worked perfectly on my 6 year old 500gb hd, thanks so much!

My Seagate is making clicking noises after only 7 months. Buying a WD drive to test those out....Keeping the Seagate as backup though since it works just fine, I just can't handle the noise.

Certain Seagate drives seem to be highly rated and built to last while other models are absolute junk. The drive in my XPS 400 (2005) served for 11 years before being replaced with an SSD. It still works and I use it as backup storage.

I know this video is old, but every time I see a Hard drive with this problem it is a Seagate. I have some Seagate Hybrid Hard drives and I have some WD Velocity Raptor HDD's. I have had no trouble with the Raptor's, but one of my Seagate drives went bad and it was only 6 months old. I will never buy a Seagate drive again.
OMG Dude, my LaCie (owned by Seagate) USB C HDD just arrived 2 days ago and its already broken today. with the beeping/ clicking noise. i had to wait 4 weeks for this thing... ffs
I hate to think Seagate HDD's are all bad. I know that some have really good luck with them just not me. I have had good luck with Maxtor and WD hard drives. They will all fail eventually, but to fail out of the box doesn't give me much confidence in their product.

No it wasnt this problem. The armature or something is off by a few microns. Have to send it off to a data recovery centre. My kids tripped over the wire and it came crashing down

Very nice it worked for me!! Had a little trouble finding the hidden screw on my 2,5" HDD but yep it was stuck. Moved it back in parking mode and I am copying data from it to my external HDD at this very moment.

I have one that just keeps beeping and won't boot. Opened it up and the heads were not stuck on the platter, and the head mechanism seemed to move without much effort. The platter bearing had no resistance and was fine. Any other thoughts?
Just done mine, clicking like mad two drives in Raid "0" This was WD high speed VelociRaptor raid 0 set, so i opened both drives and found both heads in each drive about half way across, moved them back to the stops as i rotated the disk. put them back in to the PC booted it and both drives showed up as the raid 0 set, in disk manager both drives had yellow triangles and " at risk" labels, so i coped 103 GB onto a SSD and then in disk management carried out hard drive repair to one of the raid drives this makes windows repair both raid drives together, Faults where found but corrected by windows as in the file below. i am going to carry on running the raid 0 drives as all the data is now on an SSD anyway. Thanks for the Tip on repairing the drives. Checking file system on G: Volume label is WD VelociRaptor Raid drive. Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ... 8448 file records processed. Cheers mate. Remote 1TB hd not showing at all on laptop. A search led me here and it was the head stuck on the platter. Followed your instructions and all sorted. I used this method on an 1.5TB Seagate drive. that was beeping constantly and causing the computer to hang all the time. The primary hard drive in an SSD thank goodness. But all my music, games and movie were on the Seagate drive.
I popped the top off and gently moved the heads back and forward a few times. and screwed it back together. Once I powered it up windows with the drive re-installed it was detecting errors on the hard drive it ran the repair utility. And was fine after that no more beeping and I could read for it. However I do not know if I have caused damaged I have not tried writing to the hard drive the damage could be in a unpopulated part of the drive.
I only recommend this method if you have nothing to lose, if the hard drive is old or out of warranty otherwise send the thing back. To most people the data on the hard drive is worth more then the drive its self. You should get a new had drive as soon as possible and transfer all the data off it while it still works.
This worked for me too after I dropped my portable hard drive, it was making 3 soft clicking sounds. I opened it up, reset the heads and was able to recover most of the data and also reformat the drive. Amazingly, even though it fell from the desk to the floor, there was no visible damage to the platter like in your other video. Thanks!

I think he was using a figure of speech. Perhaps what he meant was anything of more than a casual value, e.g.: like if you're a freelance photographer, have your stuff on a disc that gets backed up but you're traveling, didn't yet back up, and the traveling HD crashes!! and now you're home and have lost the whole shoot, ouch. He says take that to the pros.

Hey guys, I had a seagate external harddrive which made a similar sound when i connected it to the usb3 port and I tried different cable different computer, even i removed the hdd inside of it and used a sata to usb3 adapter still did that beeping and did not work. Then I decided to give this method a try and it really worked! thank you man you are a hero!

Abraham you saved my tail. An editing client's hard drive failed with a week's worth of (expensive) footage on it. I saw your video, offered to fix it for them and they gave me the go ahead. Inside it looked exactly as you demonstrated. I moved the head back the start position and it worked flawlessly. Currently backing up the footage now. This is the report that a technician gave me after he "inspected" the drive.
Report:
We have finished examining all physical and logical components of your storage media. Based on your situation we have determined that your media has sustained physical damage. The main cause of damage is that the storage media does not spin up due to a malfunction in the engine.
For the recovery process we need to replace the whole engine unit and read write unit. After the engine transplant we will need re install the read write unit and recalibrate the heads. When the storage media spins up we need to read out all data on a sector level and reconstruct the complete file system. Afterwards we will mount the data onto an offline server in order to check the integrity of your data(partitions, directories and the different file types).
The repairs will need to take place in a clean room environment.
Technicians Notes:
Motor is wedged, heads not in parking position, no other visible damage inside, need to explant disks and possibly heads,
My hard drive would attempt to spin up...once I reset the heads, it spun without any problems. Your problem sounds much worse and expensive to repair, but sounds like the data should be intact and recoverable since the plates are intact

The platter surface is damaged. Very difficult to get data from it. You need to go to a data recovery company.

Toasted that's the problem, I don't know if my hardrive doesn't work because my laptop freezes on the Samsung logo screen with the f2 and f4 buttons which both are unresponsive.

For anyone with a Macbook (Pro) with a Seagate (Momentus): there are 2 metallic labels underneath the regular white label that needed to be peeled off before a circular indentation becomes visible, through which that last screw can be reached
Other than that, this worked perfectly on my 6 year old 500gb hd, thanks so much!

My Seagate is making clicking noises after only 7 months. Buying a WD drive to test those out....Keeping the Seagate as backup though since it works just fine, I just can't handle the noise.

Certain Seagate drives seem to be highly rated and built to last while other models are absolute junk. The drive in my XPS 400 (2005) served for 11 years before being replaced with an SSD. It still works and I use it as backup storage.

I know this video is old, but every time I see a Hard drive with this problem it is a Seagate. I have some Seagate Hybrid Hard drives and I have some WD Velocity Raptor HDD's. I have had no trouble with the Raptor's, but one of my Seagate drives went bad and it was only 6 months old. I will never buy a Seagate drive again.

I hate to think Seagate HDD's are all bad. I know that some have really good luck with them just not me. I have had good luck with Maxtor and WD hard drives. They will all fail eventually, but to fail out of the box doesn't give me much confidence in their product.

Very nice it worked for me!! Had a little trouble finding the hidden screw on my 2,5" HDD but yep it was stuck. Moved it back in parking mode and I am copying data from it to my external HDD at this very moment.

I have one that just keeps beeping and won't boot. Opened it up and the heads were not stuck on the platter, and the head mechanism seemed to move without much effort. The platter bearing had no resistance and was fine. Any other thoughts?

Just done mine, clicking like mad two drives in Raid "0"
This was WD high speed VelociRaptor raid 0 set, so i opened both drives and found both heads in each drive about half way across, moved them back to the stops as i rotated the disk. put them back in to the PC booted it and both drives showed up as the raid 0 set, in disk manager both drives had yellow triangles and " at risk" labels, so i coped 103 GB onto a SSD and then in disk management carried out hard drive repair to one of the raid drives this makes windows repair both raid drives together, Faults where found but corrected by windows as in the file below. i am going to carry on running the raid 0 drives as all the data is now on an SSD anyway. Thanks for the Tip on repairing the drives.
