@ Trainers are all afraid to run their Horses, just in case they can be accused of something. It never stops. Ground is wrong, the Vet says it’s wrong, the horse is not 100%, bla bla bla. They are trying to please the people that will never watch racing and p*ss off the Punters. And don’t get me started about the Language. For example, it used to be called a Near fore, now it’s a horses left front leg, as if the general public is too stupid to learn

Golden Cygnet/Constitution Hill top 2 spots 👌Al Ferof's race I would say had the greatest top 4, so only change I would make would be the Ill fated Shadow Leader, whose last to first win was spectacular and would have finished 2nd/3rd to Istabraq in following year's Champion Hurdle but for his fatal fall. I would have him in 4th/5th. Either way, a great cast and testament to the enduring wonder of the festival opener. Thank you for once again bringing back some great memories.

Absolutely brilliant list of Horses there and hard to argue with any of these wonderful names.I was really going from The modern era with footage that I could get hold of easily enough.No doubt there is footage out there of Bula and Beacon light winning but the BBC never release it unless to are connected to the race and are willing to shell out £60 to get a copy.Thanks for you input.Much appreciated

I’m fully aware of the tragedy that occurred at Ayr next tune out , GC was ALL potential , he might’ve went on to be as good or maybe even better than Douvan , Altior , Shishkin and Constitution Hill .. but unlike those 4 who went on to fulfill their potential and much much more .. GC fell and was killed , so there’s no way , in my way of thinking anyway , he could have the accolade of best ever winner of the Supreme . I’m a great believer in subsequent form , otherwise we are going only on a hunch or a guess , look at the winners of that race who DIDNT go on to greater things like Tartan tailor, Flown , Indefence , French Ballerina and Willie Mullins first festival winner Tourist attraction which I backed when it won at 25/1 ( yayyy ) .. anyway , that’s my opinion , others I’m sure will disagree . Not dissing GC in any way , but fate intervened to make comparisons to Constitution Hill et al largely wishful thinking if your honest ….. ( discuss 🤔 ) 👍🏴
GC’s reputation is at least as much to do with his final race (Scottish Ch Hdl) as the Supreme. He was giving Night Nurse 5lb and receiving 1lb from Sea Pigeon, whilst running all over them at the time of his departure. Given Night Nurse is the Timeform top rates hurdler of all time, it doesn’t take a great leap of imagination to think if he had lived, Golden Cygnet may have reached similar heights.
Love it Jay and having an opinion is what the post and the Channel is all about and everything you have said is 100 pc True and Valid.I based the top 10 on personal opinion only and was aware of what all the Winners went on to achieve.Number 1 Golden Cygnet was an easy decision for me to make and nostalgia definitely came into it as well having stood at the last Hurdle at Ayr when he came down I had the privilege of seeing him in the flesh.Back to his Supreme that was run 2 seconds faster than The Champion Hurdle 1 Hour later with Monksfield beating Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse by 2 lengths and 8 lengths with other top horses down the field.Without doubt one of the Great Champion Hurdles in a Golden Era well documented.Im sure the bigger field of the supreme and possibly running on better ground could have contributed to the difference in the race times.Golden Cygnet then won at Fairyhouse in a common canter before The Scottish Champion Hurdle where the handicapper asked him to give 5 Pounds to Night Nurse and 7 Pounds to Beacon light and 12 pounds to Decent Fellow the Sweeps winner.In receipt of 1 pound from Sea Pigeon the race was still in the balance when he came down and jumping is the name of the game but I’ve spoke to Ian Watkinson many times about this and he said Golden Cygnet had him well beaten but Easterby said he never set a fast enough pace.For me the opinion of the Handicapper and the subsequent achievements of the Horses he was running against at Ayr tells me everything I need to know.Vincent O’Brien said he was the Greatest Hurdler he had ever seen and that’s an achievement in itself.I think his Potential was fulfilled in The Scottish Champion Hurdle.Some Great names you mentioned there Jay and amazing input from you again.Fingers crossed for Constitution Hill.An absolute Weapon of a Horse.His Supreme was mind blowing and he would have Won The Champion Hurdle that day too if they had given him an Hours rest and came out again.Thats how good I think he is.Great topic of conversation Jay.
