What Distance Should My Grow Lights be Above My Seeds Starts? & How Long Do I Leave the Lights On?

  • I provide clear examples of light distance, for *white LED shop lights*, above seed starts. I also show you what healthy stocky plants and leggy plants look like. Plants need more light at germination and the first 2-3 week period of growth.

    Very well-spoken and easy to listen to this presentation. Thank you.
    One note I'd like to add is that some seeds prefer a rather cool germinate temperature, perhaps even into the 50° - 60° Fahrenheit range. When germinating seeds with such requirements, I place a very, very gentle fan to blow across the 1 - 3" gap between lights and sown seed starter trays. Not only does the gentle airflow keep the trays cool, despite the close proximity of the lights, but it also will make the new seedlings "dance" and wiggle about, which aids in even stronger, stouter stems at seedling stage.
    Peace!

    As a European, I watch so many of your videos. I can't even calculate garden things anymore using Centimeters and meters. Everything I can think of is inches and feet and it's so much easier for me. Same with Celcius and Fahrenheit, completely switched it.

      inches have their advantage when not dealing with high levels of precision, but Fahrenheit makes no sense to me, freezing point should be 0, not 32 or something

      As an American engineer, I have to say this is tragic, lol, jk.
      But seriously metric is better! English system doesn't even have a unit for mass... well, the slug, as if anyone uses it, they used pound for 200 years till they realized, oops, that's not mass.

    I wish we could post photos on here. I purchased some cheap t5 LEDs off amozon this year for 35 dollars for 6 and my starts are amazing my peppers and tomatoes are so tight between the noobs I'm even doing hydroponic lettuce and kale under them. The lights are 24 watts 2200 LU and 6500k I've seen a big differences from using my T12 shop lights. I compaired the T5 with other T5 grow lights on Amazon and the T5s I purchased are the same watts higher lums and are only around 3000k. The less expensive lights are working better then I've ever dreamed of. So if anyone has any worries about the cheeper T5s on Amazon they work GREAT
    The lights can be found on Amazon by searching Shinestar 4FT LED Tube Light Fixture 6500k Brite White 6 Pack 20 Watt T5 Light Bar
    I wrote a review for the lights on Amazon and posted pictures of my plants with a picture of my PPFD reading , llluminance, and Kelvin reading at 4 inches away from the light. The name on the review is Ohio Overland

    After about 13 hours my tomato seed leaves are pointing up and almost closed together. I don’t have any true leaves yet. I have grow lights about 2 inches above my solo cups, and seedlings are about an inch or so below the rim. They don’t point up until about 12-13 hours after being under the lights. Any guidance welcomed. This is my first year starting seeds indoors and I’m so invested in these “babies”. You are the reason I’ve attempted seed starting and I am so grateful for any tips you can give! Thank you for your knowledge and expertise!

    I recommend LED. High quality one. Dimmable. I use a mars sp3000 in a 2x4 tent. I use a lux Meter and concert lux to par. Adjust distance or brightness as needed. Fresh starts get 400ish par. Once true leaves emerge, 600+ depending on plants. Peppers now getting 800 par at 20 inch hang distance fill power. 287 watts.
    Peppers need at least 14 hours. 16 would be better. 10 or 12 is too little.

    Hello, if you put your led lamps too close to the plant, there will be a heat problem. In fact the result depends on the power of the led lamps used, 3000 and 5000 lumens it corresponds roughly to a 30w and 50w lamp, (it's not much).
    For seedlings I use a 150w led lamp at 24″ distance and I have good results. The seedlings don't require much light, about 250 PPFD.

    I have a 5500 lumen grow light over my tomato seedlings. They only germinated & popped through the soil yesterday. I have it about 2” or so above the plants. The lumen level is adjustable & I currently have it at 20%, which is 1,100 lumens. Do you feel that is strong enough, or should I increase the a percentage? Next setting is 40%, which would be 2,200 lumens. I’ve tried finding this info online & haven’t been successful. I’m new to vegetable gardening & appreciate the work you’ve put in making videos!

    Hello, I have two grow lights 5000 lumens led each above my seedlings. I currently have Broccoli seedlings started and am keeping the lights right above the them at around 2 inches. My soil temps are staying in the low 80s and high 70s. I'm trying to figure out how to keep the light close but lower the soil temps. I guess my question would be could the Lights be raising the soil temps? Should I move the lights up or would that create leggy seedlings? They germinated on a heat mat but were taken off as soon as they started. thanks

    Hi Gary. Is the same true for LED grow lights? Do they also need to be down just a couple of inches above the seedlings. • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well they can be higher than fluorescent lights. But 3000 Lumens to 10000 lumens is very different. I recommend starting 2-3 inches and if there is damage, raise the lights to 4-6 inches. You wont really know till you try. The first 1 week after germination is the most important for lights to be close and you could raise them up as the true leaves are showing up.

      It is to put it 2 inches above plants but start off higher and adjust. Thats all you need to do for more intense lights.

    Thanks for the video. I’ve read having the light too close to your plants can cause them to grow leggy (the extra heat) instead of the lack of direct light. How can you tell which is causing leggy seedlings?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well cool crops can get leggy if their roots are too warm, just from fast growth. But these are cool crops and you can see how they turned out. I wouldnt actually worry about that. Its the warmth of the house too so its hard to regulate.

    My set up is two shop lights per shelf. Each light is 5200 kelvin with 10,000 lumen. I have followed all your seed starting videos and everything starts good, but then stops growing. I have them on 12 hours a day. Humidity under lights is very low, around 10%. Temp can get around 85° directly under lights. I know lumen is much higher than anything you use, but do you have a recommendation of how close the lights should be?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try moving your lights back. I dont know what you have them at but its worth and experiment. Your lights are double mine. I would also increase water soluble nitrogen and see if you notice anything. If you move the lights back... give them 14 hours on.

    Quick question: Do you forego putting on a humidity dome over your tray while you wait for your seeds to germinate? I ask because it seems that in order to have the lights so close, there wouldn't be room for a humidity dome. Thanks again for the really helpful video!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont use the humidity dome. I havent for nearly 20 years. I found they cause more mold and fungal issues. You want the surface to dry. Unless watering and checking on them are an issue, a dome is not needed.

    Hey Gary. This might be a stupid question but... while looking around for parts and lights for my first growing station I had trouble finding a good selection of LED tubes in The Netherlands and I wondered; does adding 2x 2500k-lumen/4k tubes make a combined 5k-lumen and 8k light source or do they individually have to be the right specs? Much appreciated and keep making these informative videos.

      They dont add that way as the are next to each other. But 2 lights of that measure is better than 1. Its just not purely additive. I used those ratings in the past and they can work. Just keep the light closer to the plants

      Yes two 2,500 lumen lights will add up to 5,000 lumens. I think the confusion comes with the statement of needing 5,000 lumens without relating it to the coverage area. Gary’s light is 5,000 lumens and covers approximately 4 square feet of growing area, which would equate to 1,250 lumens per square foot. If the configuration of your lights provide that, then yes you’ll have the same light intensity as Gary’s setup.
