The third conversation God has with Israel is directed to the people. They are being unfaithful to Him and the Covenant by being unfaithful in marriage. This is seen in two ways: by marrying foreign women and by divorcing their wives for other reason than they do not love them anymore. For us today as Christians this means that believers are only to marry other believers and that those already married cannot "no fault" divorce. There are a couple of biblical reasons for divorce: adultery and abandonment, but to divorce simply because you are no longer in love, or for irreconcilable differences is sin. God calls us to faithfulness in our marriages. And He has given us Jesus, the Faithful Husband as our example, and His Holy Spirit who enables husbands and wives to be faithful to each other and God Himself.
