This one was a big miss for me. It really felt like anything and everything you would come to this movie for was half-cooked and empty. If it was a typical Blum release I wouldn’t have been surprised at all but Leigh Whannell being the cowriter and director still won’t compute for me.

So, like we all thought, it's really the wolf look that broke the camel's back. Surprisingly, that didn't bother me that much. And I fully expected it to. Simple story. I thought the acting was quite good. Dolby is the best, you're right. Oh well, January release.

Felt like this was rushed. I wanted more lore personally. I did like it overall because of my own father drama lol. So 6/10 territory for me. Something that wasn't clear to me was if the wolf man killed in the house was his dad? they focused on a tattoo but i must have blanked on if that was on his dad in the beginning, maybe I glanced at my popcorn or something. I wish it took more than a standard bullet too. Not saying it needed to be a silver thing but some more lore to killing it other than what kills anyone or anything.
Edit: okay so it was him. I thought that moment would hit different if so. They needed to do what Kylie suggested with flashbacks. Also the wolf vision felt like it was somehow done with AI. maybe it wasn't but it has that vibe.

The og Wolfman is one of my first horror movies and actually scared me for years as a kid, to the point where i couldn’t rewatch it lol I was such a baby but I grew out of it and it’s still gives me the chills to this day.
I appreciated Whannell doing something different as not to try and be redundant but it’s interesting that he’s not relying on technology with this one like he did with the invisible man. It’s more about an organic curse. It was really trippy to me seeing him be in the other world when he was becoming the wolf and couldn’t talk.
Plus it happens more like how Jeff goldblum becomes the fly, more gradual and no transforming back and forth. And doesn’t go full shapeshifter like straight up turning into a wolf. It was trying to be more “realistic” if that makes any sense.
But, even though I’m not a dad, I empathize with Christopher abbots characters since I could honestly see myself like that as a dad. I love my dad but the line about being the thing that scars your kid resonated with me. Like we give people crap for soft parenting but it’s not easy, especially for dads sometimes.
Thank you again for the review! I’m not gonna act like this is the newest thing since sliced bread but I look for silver linings when I can find them but I can see why you and everyone else isn’t into this movie lol

A good recent werewolf movie inspired by the original Wolf Man is 2021's The Cursed written and directed by Sean Ellis. Without spoilers, it's got a mixing of o.g. Wolf Man, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Witch, with just a sprinkle of Lovecraftian creature design for the werewolves. Hope you're staying safe out there!

It definitely wasn't bad, and I think because Leigh Whannell has done so much good in the horror genre, we put the expectation bar quite high. If this had been made by someone else we probably wouldn't be as harsh because it is better than most of the stuff Blumhouse puts out 😅 I think the skeleton of a good film is there, but the wife character is one of the biggest issues pulling it down (both casting and writing). The themes mostly work in regards to fitting into a Wolf Man film, but I agree they were a little underbaked and also too ham fisted. I'm not sure quite what went wrong here, and I was left a little disappointed, but I still have faith in Leigh Whannell and want to see more films from him soon ❤

In my opinion, The Wolfman (2010), starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, is arguably the better film. It features a great balance of practical effects and CGI, especially in the transformation scenes. The look of the Wolfman was fantastic, with some truly striking moments, though there were a few missteps, like the dream sequences, Emily Blunt being relegated to a secondary role in the third act, and a couple of CGI kills, including the bear, which didn't quite hit the mark. That said, most of the scenes with the Wolfman were spot-on, even the kills, despite the occasional CGI blood. There were also some excellent practical effects in the kills, which really added to the tension and horror.
The asylum sequence and the escape through London were executed flawlessly, and the film's finale could've wrapped things up in a satisfying way but I prefer the 3rd ending, and yes there's 2 other endings. The background score was also well done, enhancing the eerie atmosphere throughout the film. It’s unfortunate that the movie didn’t receive the audience it deserved upon its release. Overall, I think The Wolfman is an underrated remake of the classic, offering a compelling mix of horror and an early 2010s monster movie charm.

Happy MLK Day, Satan. You sound more Kylie and Ms. Hyde meets Wolf-Man today. Thanks for this review. It’s reminiscent of Shin Godzilla going through different stages of transformation metamorphosis that gained new fans but disappointed the older ones I have on blu ray. It did get nominated for an award. Heard some really good things of this Wolf-Man remake and from cast members. But a $25 million couldn’t suffice a success understandably to an amount of make-up effects in this compared to prior werewolf films’ budgets.

It's interesting that all three versions of Wolf Man (1941, 2010, and now 2025) all have a strained father-son relationship dynamic as a central theme, but while the original set it as a father and son who were working to repair theirs and being more open towards each other, the remake and the Blumhouse one have it be a very literal one-to-one metaphor, hell 2010 and 2025 BOTH have the major twist be that the father is the werewolf who bites the title character (Larry/Blake) and culminate in a father/son werewolf fight. I actually find it ironic Whannel's film really hammers in the cyclical generational trauma bit, because the 1941 original does it in a far better way and makes the ending really tragic, where the father ends up killing the Wolf Man in the exact same place with the exact same weapon as Larry when he got bit at the beginning. That feels way more tragic and better highlights cyclical trauma than what the other versions have done

I loved it! It genuinely scared me. It was so intense and never let up. The sound design was amazing. The werewolf perspective in sound and vision was genius. Loved the atmosphere and suspense sequences were so well executed. I feel like I'm in the minority in my love for Wolf Man but it worked for me and I can't wait to see it again in IMAX. Leigh Whannell has become one of my favorite directors.

While this movie's exposition problem and thin plot didn't *ruin* it for me, I can't ignore those problems were there.
A part of me also wishes the movie could have delved more into the history of Blake and his father, over a longer period of time. While setting them up for a reckoning.
-Maybe stretch the story over a longer period, cover their tending to the home and cleaning matters up before the dad wolf even attacks.
-Feature Blake going in and out of fever dreams/flashbacks as he falls ill, where we get more exploration of his dad's abuse and how Blake was scarred by it.
-Contrast said flashbacks to Blake's genuine efforts to be good to both Charlotte and Ginger.
-Hint at a *possibly* supernatural origin for the werewolf affliction, and visually lean into the wolf image a bit more.
Finally, perhaps the ending doesn't have to kill Blake off.
If he's able to hold onto his love for his family, and the more or less positive relationship they have, maybe he is able to leave them of his own will. Enough of his human heart remaining in the animal he's become.

Really, just needed an extra 20 minutes of runtime to flesh the transformation out more and take it a little further and a better ending, I was expecting it to end with him having a moment of clarity before losing himself to the infection and eating the mushrooms so he wouldn’t hurt his daughter

Gee you finish your spoiler free section and I’m thinking to myself I’m already spoiled. I think if always hard to review Wolf Man ( Werewolf ) movies. Yes like Invisible Man you come up with a new updated concept. By the way I loved the new one. Love it. I still like to see this movie this week. Not much is playing that I have not already seen. Plus have to get my nacho fix.
I’ll try to give this movie a fair shot. Even with a bad money I like to at least think about WHY? Why go through all of this and come up with this. Why?
Yes I understand your feeling about what is a classic and what is a masterpiece.
For me a classic is a forerunner of things to come. Movies that follow the same idea and add to it or not.
A Masterpiece like The Birds, E.T. The Thing. These movies you don’t do a remake. You will never catch the magic again. Don’t try. All those early 30s, 40s and 50s horror movie stand the test of time. But there premise can be repeated, refined, expanded and added on to entertain us today.

    2. Yes! Julia Garner's performance was soooo muted. I think this would've been better if she were able to show off her acting chops.
    3. I think I got a second-hand high from this review

The topics are different because the topics are generational, but it sounds to me like everything the movie Wolf (Jack Nicholson) did well..this movie did not. Watch Wolf or even the 'making of '; Worth it & you'll know exactly what I mean.

Honestly Whannell’s ideas were interesting, like I don’t have a problem with what he came up with cause I’m always game for different interpretations. It’s the execution of the material that brings it down. I might not have loved his take on The Invisible Man since the original is literally perfect but it held my attention. His version of the Wolf Man on the other hand is a huge decline in quality. It had me in that first act though I’m not gonna lie. The good thing if nothing else is his version makes the original and Benicio Del Toro’s underrated remake look far better in comparison.

It's a little funny how much a title can make a movie turn from "huh, interesting monster movie" to "what a disaster". Like the American Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick from back in '98; if they hadn't called the movie (and monster) "Godzilla" I think it would have been received better, like Cloverfield. Instead, fans were like, "this is NOT Godzilla, hard pass".

Oh nice! I'm so happy we get another stoned review and it was was more chaotic then chilled but I'm here for it. I've only heard of the original The Wolf Man. Though I've only seen bits and pieces of it. Never heard of this new remake but I'm glad you did review. I'm sorry you didn't really enjoy it but the generational trauma allegory does sound interesting, at least to me. And Julia Garner being in this is kind of crazy to me. Though hearing her name reminds me that she's also going to be playing Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four movie this year. Hoping she'll at least do well in that. Also I'm glad you brought up Invisible Man cause I have been meaning to sit down and fully watch it since I've only seen parts of it. Plus the idea of a man being invisible and stalking a woman, reminds me a bit of the Batman Animated Series episode "See No Evil" where a criminal dad wears a cloaking suit to try and spend time with his daughter. What's even more crazy is the daughter in the episode was voiced by a young Elizabeth Moss. But thanks again for this hilarious high review!

I enjoyed some of the body horror but I felt like the film was trying to be too like The Fly…it fell flat by the end. It’s a shame cos I love Upgrade, and The Invisible Man. Please don’t do any more films for Blumhouse please Mr Whannell.

But why did they say the face of the wolf thing and then proceed to NOT give him a wolf face whyyyyy, the makeups technically great and would def be cool if there was no wolf involved, but I don’t get the look at all. I have so many more questions but the more I think about them the more annoyed I get. And wait that was meant to be a reveal what? 🤣the wolf vision was totally dumb. Love the vibes today, stunning

Yeah, I heard this movie wasn't that good.Apparently, it kept beating over the head of generational trauma of the sins of the father and all that ,which is a shame. I thought it would be good and interesting because the invisible man was really amazing, well directed, and acted. I was excited because I wanted to see what Leigh Whannel would do with the horror monster universe. But that's ok. Every director has that one bad movie or flop but will still make good movies

Your ambivalence towards this one really scares me. The original Lon Chaney _Wolf Man_ is so important to me; all of the Universal Classic Monsters are. On top of that, I usually like Leigh Whannell's work, so my anticipation of this was extremely high.

Yeah even though I still love The Invisible Man more I still personally really really enjoyed Wolf Man and I've already seen this movie twice in theaters, but I do have some nitpicks like even though I really enjoyed this movie it does movie a little too fast like I wish this movie was 15 to 20 minutes longer and even also even though I love the movie Abigail this movie has the same problem Abigail had in that it didn't give me enough lore about the monster I wanted to know more about these werewolves like I wanted to know about the vampires in Abigail so filmmakers stop leaving me at arm lengths with your monster tell me more about your monster please and thank you Lol 😂

The biggest sin of this movie, IMO, was it failed to up the emotional stakes in the second half. So you're left not caring about what you're seeing on screen, even though it's clear we're meant to.
