    At 6:20. Concrete ships and boats. There are several here in Australia that work very well. An construction company foreman built a yacht and still sails it.

    While we don't see any being built now, there are STILL a lot of concrete ( ferrocrete due to the rebar in them ) yachts in the world. Most well maintained and not in any danger of being abandoned or sinking.

      My dad used to own a concrete-hulled tugboat when I was younger. Not sure if it was ferrocrete, ferrocement or some other concrete-reinforcement technique, but it worked. I just remember the inside of the hull down by the bow being as smooth as a paved driveway.
      FWIW, do a Google search for "ferrocrete", and be prepared to go down some seriously weird and unexpected rabbit holes.

    Why no mention of Ford's Hemp Car ?? There are videos of it here on TH-cam. You all should watch them, especially where he smashes the blunt side of an ax onto the trunk lid of the car & it barely leaves a mark. The car was built to run on hemp fuel. The body was made of hemp fibers, likened to using fiberglass today. Even the seats were covered with cloth made from hemp.

    I had a relative in on the RAH-66 program, stated only two were completed. WRONG. There were a lot more completed, not including the two prototypes there were 21 on the production floor awaiting final parts when the program was canceled. From what I understand SF groups obtained them and people occasionally have spotted one or two in Nevada, being a multi role stealth helicopter this wouldn't be a surprise.

    Why on Earth did the Soviets use turbojets on their train rather than turbofans?? I get that fuel was cheap back then, but still not free and jets are _grossly_ inefficient at low speeds. I mean, turbofans would still have been a bad idea for safety (which Russians don't care about anyway), but seem like they would have been a _much_ more appropriate choice.

      When I first saw the photo, I thought it was the New York Central's M-497 "Black Beetle." I just looked it up and found it, too, was powered by jet engines, but didn't cost a lot of money since they used available parts. Although it provided a lot of data, the NYC was enmeshed in the disastrous merger with the Pennsylvania RR at the time. It probably wouldn't have worked here anyway, since the infrastructure of railroads in the 1960s was beginning to show the strain of already existing equipment. ('Course, the USSR's railroads, like everything else, are owned by the Gov't, but as was said, even they wouldn't spend money on the scheme.)

    • @russellgxy2905
      @russellgxy2905 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue was that the brakes would “leak on” while in motion. Really good for stopping a high speed train yes, but not good when you’re trying to get the train up to high speed in the first place

    Your entire segment on Ferrocement boats and ships (Concrete ships) is inaccurate. Literally thousands of vessels both large and small have been built over the years, the first being a small rowboat back in 1848. It's in a French museum, so IT is the oldest vessel made of concrete. Ferrocement ships, both powered and unpowered were built to haul supplies during both world wars, and one of the largest groupings of these hulls still floating today, form the floating breakwater for a sawmill at Powell River British Columbia Canada. This includes the Quartz, the unpowered hull closest to the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test to have survived the explosion. Building ferrocement vessels for pleasure use became very popular in the 1970's due to the low cost of building materials, and quite a few were made. How-to books on the subject sold well. Unfortunately, some were slapped together by enthusiastic but less than skilled builders and the building method gained a tarnished reputation. Most of the poorly built examples are long gone now, but some of those that were built properly can still be found in marinas near to where I live. In fact, a very good friend of mine lives on such a vessel, a 50 foot sailing boat built in the 70's that's as sturdy and seaworthy as the day it was launched.

    4:10 just like those crazy’s who think that Electric cars are the immediate future and, once again, the gas engine is on its way out. It’s better just to ignore them to be completely honest.

    • @nathanjones6638
      @nathanjones6638 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going to have to conditionally disagree with you. In the right conditions, electric cars are indeed worth their own weight, so to speak. For inner city hops, and short travel distances, they're certainly good, if too expensive at this precise moment.
      It's also worth mentioning that they can launch faster than gas-powered cars, in some cases, which makes them formidable as racers, again, in certain conditions.
      Just saying, they're not crazy. Just overly optimistic.

    Did we not do very well in school? Or is it just the american education system that's not really working very well?
    It's not the "weight of the materials" that dictate whether a ship floats or not. And concrete is much lighter than steel. Steel is about 4 times heavier than concrete per volume. Or density as we call it .
    The issue with concrete is tensile strength.
    Archimedes is rolling over in his grave right now.
