    I was trying to figure out a way to add a top to an old hutch and this is a great idea! Thanks!

    That drawer is pretty slick , and that's a great way to attach the top . Easy way to make your own keyhole router bit slot too .

      @ChadStanton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I Imagine a keyhole router bit would work too. However this method wedges the chambered screws into the slot. Giving it a really snug fit. Plus i just wanted to try it cuz i saw it in an old book. :-) Thanks for sharing Jerry

    You made my heart jump when you laid the show face of the top down on those dowel pins!!! Great idea, I'll remember for when I have a similar situation. Worth waiting the extra week.

    I tried this for attaching a top to a bookcase. Because I am a beginner I guess, all that happened was that the screws tore out when I tested the last attachment step on a trial piece. How much (in depth or percent of screw length) should the screw be embedded? Or is my error not making the trench wide enough? It was wider than the shank, but could the problem be that too much of the screw head was biting into the wood when I pounded? I am using poplar- is this hardwood too soft? I'd like to make this work.

    That’s a super technique. That’s one I need to remember. When you installed the brackets on the back did you mortise them in or leave them flush? I’ve found that things like those metal brackets easily dig into drywall when the piece of furniture is pushed up against a wall.

    • @ChadStanton
      @ChadStanton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a good point. But I left it flush because i figured the baseboard would actually keep it form the wall.

  • @skippylippy547
    @skippylippy547 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I must admit, I've never seen this technique until now. :))

    a keyhole router bit would have worked too .

    • @skippylippy547
      @skippylippy547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right! That's what I was thinking too. :))

    • @TheMomanslm
      @TheMomanslm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      African Cichlids That's what I thought too but then he made the point about the screw heads biting into the 1/4 inch channel to make the top fit tight.
      At first when he said "dovetail" I thought he was going to rout sliding dovetails into the top and drill a dovetail key to the carcass.

    • @skippylippy547
      @skippylippy547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      MomanSLM - yes, the screw heads biting into the channel would definitely force the top to fight tightly.
      I'm not sure I have the skill to create a really tight fitting dovetail that would accomplish what he did with those screw heads.

    • @africancichlids3011
      @africancichlids3011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      true.

    • @WoodUCreate

      If you noticed he also partially dove tailed in the slots by angling the chisel.

    For the “trench”, couldn’t you use a keyhole router bit?

    • @adrianmack3
      @adrianmack3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The purpose of the way he did it the way he did, the head of the screw cut it's own groove into the top creating a very tight interference fit. The keyhole bit would require futzing about with the depth of the screws until they were tight enough to provide the hold he wants.

      I considered that, but glue prevent the top from expanding with season changes. But thank you for the comment.
