I just wanted to say that I really love what you guys did with this character. It could have been some lousy nerf or just random buffs but all the additions genuinely make you think more about your game plan when playing wolfgang

Everyone currently in the constant aspired to be something, and the world granted their wishes but trapped them there in the process. Wigfrid isn't a real warrior, Wilson is merely a pseudoscientist, Maxwell was a moderate magician, and now apparently wolfgang isn't really that strong.

It is heartbreaking seeing Wolfgang's expression when he saw his friend drag the resisting elephant without him, as if his strength is not needed at all even in dire situations.. and the ending where Maxwell used the shadows is such a great unexpected turn of story. Well done Klei, best survival game i have ever played and will keep playing. Bravo and take care Klei developers!
It also shows the power the Codex Umbra contains. Being able to give a man the strength to throw a train cart, to turning Carter from a simple-looking man into the Maxwell we see.
I was genuinely half-expecting that he'd actually be holding the elephant, but then got hungry and deflated, causing him to drop it and ruin the show. And having got kicked out, that's when he finds his way to the Constant. Definitely threw me for a loop. Well done and kudos, Klei!
It's likely the Shadow Magic that causes that. Wolfgang's normal state is the mid stage, and the other two were probably caused by the use of the dark magic. Which would eventually send him to the constant when Maxwell eventually went there.

If all of the strength came from the shadows then Maxwell could've lifted the train and escape by himself. You gotta give Wolfgang the credit he deserves.
Honestly, it was kind of expected. Wolfgang is a White Male. White Men in today's post modern corporate world must be depicted as weak, childish, and flawed with little to no valor. I would have thought Wolfgang being shown as truly heroic would have been the subversion of expectations. But, then again, Wolfgang was always afraid of the monsters. His small form I always felt was his "True" inner self, always afraid, always insecure. I always believed that his weak form in game was derived from his lack of self confidence lack of self worth, and lack of self respect, which in a land where perception could become reality, his strength could indeed dwindle. But this animation I felt threw all that away and instead went for the "safe" and corporate acceptable trope. While I am not exactly disappointed, I am definitely not surprised. But all is not bad. The quality of this animation is very good, the depiction of the circus is pretty accurate in terms of how Circuses were depicted to work. The Grim reality is something that used to be never talked about all the way until all the big circuses were ended mostly due to animal cruelty. But there was a magic to going to the circus, a childlike naivete where magic felt like it was real and clowns were not scary, and animals were so well behaved! When I found out like most of what I saw with the animals was a lie I was crushed for a while. Edit: You know what? I take back some of what I said about Wolfgang's depiction. Lore wise it is definitely consistent. The source of his strength and weakness in game is clearly supernatural. Every character in the game came there with some vice or another, a sin they are continually paying for but also using in some way to stay sane/alive. This Animation is more than I expected to be and it speaks harshly about my own personal cynicism of how political activism has penetrated gaming over the past 10 years. So, I sincerely apologize to the Devs in this case.

He was already ashamed of his himself after failing in the act, but on top of that he found himself in a traumatic situation where he could've died. Most people would rather get away from the wreck and find comfort, but not him, not this one. He decided to stay and help, and that is heroic because he had the choice not to.
So much story-telling, so much said, without a line of spoken dialogue. I legit covered my mouth in shock when Wolfgang accidentally exposed the secret. I'm blown away.
I like how Wolfgang is afraid of monsters and the dark in game so it Carries over to this animation to the point where it shows what else he is afraid of, which a mouse makes sense, he is a team player, an swole man but deep down, no matter how strong he gets, he will always have his fears holding him back.
And his fear of a mouse led to people believing he faked the elephant thing (even though not everything in Circus shows is real). This animated short is proof Cancer Culture is reckless and costly even for the smallest mistakes.

This animation for me is the highlight of my year, along with the Webber rework animation. The lore hits deep and I love the changes made to Wolfgang, I feel like he truly holds his title as the strongman ever more than before! I felt so bad for the Circus leader. I mean at the beginning you see him all happy and eager to give the audience a good show. Then when Wolfgang being faked is revealed, the Circus leader decides that instead of just running out of the tent until tensions fall, instead to try his hardest to calm the audience. It’s just so sad to me that this man started his entire career just to make people happy, and got objects thrown at him. Also, he probably let Wolfgang join the circus even though he knew that Wolfgang wasn’t strong. He did it out of sheer kindness. Can you imagine how long it took and how hard it was to make that show. It take a ton of time, and people with loads of talent are needed. Klei, I know none of this is real, but can you just let me know if the Circus leader was alright afterwards?
There’s no better feeling than realizing the connections between lore within these animations. When the trains crashed I FREAKED realizing who was trapped underneath. Fantastic stuff, Klei!! Also, congrats on getting DST to the Switch! I’m gonna play the heck outta this update!
One of the most enduring plot points yet! So excited for what next you have in store. Brilliant how Maxwell’s brother owns the circus that Wolfgang was apart of and has the Codex Umbra! Props to Klei for all the great animations, keep up the amazing work guys!
I always saw Wolfgang as the kind of big bully guy who make fun of the weak and is afraid of silly things like darkness bugs or heights but im rly surprised of how kind hearted he actually is in his story
To the Klei dev team personally, thank you. I was a little bit worried about him, since he is my favorite and all, but you guys did a 100 percent improvement on him. I just cant believe this, you managed to make him even better. I am just so grateful, not to mention this short which is also perfect. This rework was one of the best, and I am so glad that Wolfgang got the respect he deserved.
I absolutely adore this short and the rework itself. The semi 3d looking shots have to be my favorite part though, they're incredibly convincing fake 3d or emulating that paper cutout on a 3d plane style that ds and dst have which is great either way. Great job on this one guys.
*Additional curiosity:* The entire scene of the train crash where Maxwell was traveling, is an animation and reference to the Don't Starve comics that were published a long time ago (2014-2015 approximately); where they mention that in 1904, William bought a train ticket that would travel from New York to San Francisco (California), but that unfortunately he would suffer a train accident before visiting his brother and becoming the great Maxwell. In this accident it is reported by a newspaper that dozens of people were injured and mysteriously one person was missing, which it was suspected could be Maxwell. Just an amazing work that you did here, Klei; both in animation and in story (and of course, gameplay). You never lose your shine in whatever game you update or release. ❤💪

In any case though, the animation, as always, is absolutely phenomenal! ive been following and playing this game ever since 2014, wayyy before don't starve together, and it makes me very happy and warm inside to see the characters we've known for so long get even more bits of character to them and seeing them live their lives before getting dragged into the survival game. the game has always been good to give us little bits of information to make them interesting and to give them character for us to speculate on, but these shorts are always the perfect balance of telling us more but not too much to not let us use our imagination. always adore it :]
I've recently got into Don't Starve Together (After the Eye for an Eye update), and I am so glad that the game is still very alive and is getting major updates, this makes a newcomer like me not feel like they've missed out on the golden days of a game. Keep up the good work!

I know this is about Wolfgang and I love this animated short as much as I loved the others but imagine: Maxwell buffing his allied survivors with shadow magic.
I don't know how many people can say this, but I grew up with Don't Starve. I've been playing this game since I was 7, in 2013. It's really cool to not only grow up with a game but watch the game grow up with you. Even if I don't play nearly as much as I used to, this game will forever hold a very special place in my heart, and I'm so grateful for everything I've gotten in my life because of this game. Bonding with friends, joining communities, making new friends, I really wouldn't be the same without it. So thank you, Klei. Keep being amazing.
Okay I was so looking forward to seeing another Maxwell short. I love how every character has a major flaw that they are willing to enter shady deals to make up for it

It would get boring fast. Lore (especially in DS) is incredibly short and can pretty much be explained in a few minutes. The thing is they just don’t give you enough information. That’s why lore is fun to figure it out; because you have so little information to go off of. A show would just be 99% filler
Just got into this game a few weeks ago from the steam sale and now I'm hooked! I've been binging on all of these videos and I was so hyped to see a new one today! Klei is amazing and I'm happy to be an official fan now :D

This short was absolutely incredible! I'm proud of myself for predicting beforehand that the circus crash that Maxwell was in was Wolfgang's circus (pieced together from the William Carter Puzzles and the few things we knew about Wolfgang beforehand) but I never expected to see Wolfgang be the one to save Maxwell, or for him to be shadow-enhanced. Literally insane animation, and now we know that shadows have use... as steroids.

theres something called hysterical strength that will make people able to lift up cars and do other crazy feats however you can only use it in special circumstances and you can destroy your body using it the reason why you cant aways use it is a safeguard to protect you
in fact to further refine this your body is A LOT stronger than you think but your body caps its self for every day use because often making full abuse of the muscles proper can rip them up. its accaly the logic on why necromorphs can kill ya so easly. its because they are always in that state of complet contraction. but train cars need a few in the unguarded state of muscle control so max using the book was a fine deal.
An example would be that we're hardwired to never use full force when biting down on something, but in a moment when that safeguard is removed, we could bite through a finger like we'd bite through a carrot...
These shorts are so great, getting bits of lore and just enjoying the quality of the animation and music, I always get hyped when I see a new short is out

yep. and to note most people ran into eather maxwell or something he left draged them INTO the relm adn gave them power they seeked. like here wolfgang was given the strnght to lift the train car by maxwell using the codex. so this is how wolfgang entered the FIRST game persay.

I like the seen that he was shown as a fake made him want to never be a fake again and to work hard, you could see real determination on his face while he was lifting in his cart

This is probaly one of the well maded back stories that a dont starve together character has. Also Somehow even one glasses can make look William carter a completely different personality than Maxwell and also looks pretty cute on him. And now I know why Wolfgang has a short time Strength. Probaly later he did made a deal whit Maxwell like all other characters did. And probaly he is one of the person that knows he is William carter and he never died at that train crash.
I haven't thought about Don't Starve in a very hot minute, but yet seeing these animated shorts show up brings me a good bit of happiness. I would give a lot of things for everyone to be able to see some kind of full movie saga or something featuring Don't Starve characters! Seeing how much myself and others out there love these, I might as well say I might sell my soul for one of those. I wonder where said soul would go though...

He was already ashamed of his himself after failing in the act, but on top of that he found himself in a traumatic situation where he could've died. Most people would rather get away from the wreck and find comfort, but not him, not this one. He decided to stay and help, and that is heroic because he had the choice not to.
So much story-telling, so much said, without a line of spoken dialogue. I legit covered my mouth in shock when Wolfgang accidentally exposed the secret. I'm blown away.

I like how Wolfgang is afraid of monsters and the dark in game so it Carries over to this animation to the point where it shows what else he is afraid of, which a mouse makes sense, he is a team player, an swole man but deep down, no matter how strong he gets, he will always have his fears holding him back.
And his fear of a mouse led to people believing he faked the elephant thing (even though not everything in Circus shows is real). This animated short is proof Cancer Culture is reckless and costly even for the smallest mistakes.

This animation for me is the highlight of my year, along with the Webber rework animation. The lore hits deep and I love the changes made to Wolfgang, I feel like he truly holds his title as the strongman ever more than before! Spectacular animation as always and nothing but the best wishes to you Klei.
Ha, I love how the shadow magic returning so closely resembled Wolfgang dropping out of mighty form. They gave them all something they wanted, even Abigail's flower is made out of shadows...
I think one character actually says that Abigail is actually bound to the DS world, so maybe!

I felt so bad for the Circus leader. I mean at the beginning you see him all happy and eager to give the audience a good show. Then when Wolfgang being faked is revealed, the Circus leader decides that instead of just running out of the tent until tensions fall, instead to try his hardest to calm the audience. It’s just so sad to me that this man started his entire career just to make people happy, and got objects thrown at him. Also, he probably let Wolfgang join the circus even though he knew that Wolfgang wasn’t strong. He did it out of sheer kindness. Can you imagine how long it took and how hard it was to make that show. It take a ton of time, and people with loads of talent are needed. Klei, I know none of this is real, but can you just let me know if the Circus leader was alright afterwards?

I always saw Wolfgang as the kind of big bully guy who make fun of the weak and is afraid of silly things like darkness bugs or heights but im rly surprised of how kind hearted he actually is in his story
To the Klei dev team personally, thank you. I was a little bit worried about him, since he is my favorite and all, but you guys did a 100 percent improvement on him. I just cant believe this, you managed to make him even better. I am just so grateful, not to mention this short which is also perfect. This rework was one of the best, and I am so glad that Wolfgang got the respect he deserved.
I absolutely adore this short and the rework itself. The semi 3d looking shots have to be my favorite part though, they're incredibly convincing fake 3d or emulating that paper cutout on a 3d plane style that ds and dst have which is great either way. Great job on this one guys.
I love the work of the animators and composers on those shorts, it's absolutely thrilling to watch !
*Additional curiosity:*
The entire scene of the train crash where Maxwell was traveling, is an animation and reference to the Don't Starve comics that were published a long time ago (2014-2015 approximately); where they mention that in 1904, William bought a train ticket that would travel from New York to San Francisco (California), but that unfortunately he would suffer a train accident before visiting his brother and becoming the great Maxwell. In this accident it is reported by a newspaper that dozens of people were injured and mysteriously one person was missing, which it was suspected could be Maxwell.
Just an amazing work that you did here, Klei; both in animation and in story (and of course, gameplay). You never lose your shine in whatever game you update or release. ❤💪
The lore is getting pretty deep now. I can't wait to see the other connections in this giant web!

ive been following and playing this game ever since 2014, wayyy before don't starve together, and it makes me very happy and warm inside to see the characters we've known for so long get even more bits of character to them and seeing them live their lives before getting dragged into the survival game. the game has always been good to give us little bits of information to make them interesting and to give them character for us to speculate on, but these shorts are always the perfect balance of telling us more but not too much to not let us use our imagination. always adore it :]

I know this is about Wolfgang and I love this animated short as much as I loved the others but imagine: Maxwell buffing his allied survivors with shadow magic.
I don't know how many people can say this, but I grew up with Don't Starve. I've been playing this game since I was 7, in 2013. It's really cool to not only grow up with a game but watch the game grow up with you. Even if I don't play nearly as much as I used to, this game will forever hold a very special place in my heart, and I'm so grateful for everything I've gotten in my life because of this game. Bonding with friends, joining communities, making new friends, I really wouldn't be the same without it. So thank you, Klei. Keep being amazing.

It would get boring fast. Lore (especially in DS) is incredibly short and can pretty much be explained in a few minutes. The thing is they just don’t give you enough information. That’s why lore is fun to figure it out; because you have so little information to go off of. A show would just be 99% filler

I like how when the shadows wrap around Wolfgang's arms it looks like one of those old stripey prison suits.
This short was absolutely incredible! I'm proud of myself for predicting beforehand that the circus crash that Maxwell was in was Wolfgang's circus (pieced together from the William Carter Puzzles and the few things we knew about Wolfgang beforehand) but I never expected to see Wolfgang be the one to save Maxwell, or for him to be shadow-enhanced. Literally insane animation, and now we know that shadows have use... as steroids.
Also, is it just ne or does the ringmaster's stick look a lot like an Eye Bone minus the horns?

theres something called hysterical strength that will make people able to lift up cars and do other crazy feats however you can only use it in special circumstances and you can destroy your body using it the reason why you cant aways use it is a safeguard to protect you
in fact to further refine this your body is A LOT stronger than you think but your body caps its self for every day use because often making full abuse of the muscles proper can rip them up. its accaly the logic on why necromorphs can kill ya so easly. its because they are always in that state of complet contraction. but train cars need a few in the unguarded state of muscle control so max using the book was a fine deal.
An example would be that we're hardwired to never use full force when biting down on something, but in a moment when that safeguard is removed, we could bite through a finger like we'd bite through a carrot...

for people who didnt understand the guy that wolfgang saved was maxwell, maxwell used the codex umbra to make wolfgang strong enough to lift the train and save him
yep. and to note most people ran into eather maxwell or something he left draged them INTO the relm adn gave them power they seeked. like here wolfgang was given the strnght to lift the train car by maxwell using the codex. so this is how wolfgang entered the FIRST game persay.
A great history for a great character, you guys never disappoint me, only klei can do this, and its so wow that everything in the game happened bc wolfgang saved maxwell.

AMAZING as always!!! I really love your guys work! It's so great to just see the stories unfold in such a great animation style!! It was also super unexpected that Wolfgang would get a animation and getting a rework but the rework made Wolfgang so much more unique!!
This is probaly one of the well maded back stories that a dont starve together character has. Also Somehow even one glasses can make look William carter a completely different personality than Maxwell and also looks pretty cute on him. And now I know why Wolfgang has a short time Strength. Probaly later he did made a deal whit Maxwell like all other characters did. And probaly he is one of the person that knows he is William carter and he never died at that train crash.
I haven't thought about Don't Starve in a very hot minute, but yet seeing these animated shorts show up brings me a good bit of happiness. I would give a lot of things for everyone to be able to see some kind of full movie saga or something featuring Don't Starve characters! Seeing how much myself and others out there love these, I might as well say I might sell my soul for one of those. I wonder where said soul would go though...
