      You can buy Mig 29s. Paul Allen's estate has one that flies 10 miles from here. There are likely 1 to 2 dozen flyable Migs within a hundred miles of me in the US NW. All you need is a billion so you can afford to use, feed, and house it. I hear they aren't to bad to buy. But keeping it flyable turns a large fortune into a small one.

      @@Dangermonkey1000 Not a fair comparison. SU30 first flight was almost 20 years after that of the F-14. F-22 first flight was even later. The A, B, and D model would be out of date by now but the Super Tomcat 21 would be very advanced; an even greater "iron jet" than the F-15E, with a gigantic AESA radar, JHMCS, less canopy bows, thrust vectoring(!), and the same engines that are going into the F-15EX today. It would have also had increased weapon carrying capability, a full glass cockpit, integrated sensor suite, and much more internal fuel for a longer loiter time. It could have been the best fighter the world has ever seen, but one problem: $$$ and the damn feds wanted the Super Hornet (bleh) instead.

      @@adjustings673 Were they converts or new builds? I missed all that some how. If you check they make all the same arguments for all the great planes, but they all must go anyway. An example is welding 2 P-51s together thinking that would work in a jet age. Except the B-52 which is bordering on weird now. I'd bet the Tomcat met the same fate the other swing wings met. Heavy and expensive to build and maintain. And it is no longer needed, or say the aero guys. It was one of the best no doubt, and it has always made me wonder what the one-eleven would've been if the AF had built it alone. But the TFX is now completely to bed. We have moved on.

      @@duster0066 "Heavy and expensive to build and maintain" you mean like the F-35? This swing wing would be a fully enhanced fresh build, not an upgrade. You can't do that many structural, sensor, avionics, and engine upgrades without completely totaling it on an old airframe which already has thousands of hours on it.

      It was necessary for the stealth profile. You cannot have the 3D thrust vectoring that the russians have with great stealth characteristics, so the Russians made a compromise and opted to have as low frontal radar cross section as possible. (As that's usually crucial when being vectored in to intercept incoming aircraft. Got to say, on land it looks weird, in the air it looks like a sword of doom

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also affects drag. The more bulky, the more volume of air you need to displace, so keeping it slim makes it faster. Same thing goes for reduced vertical tail surface making it a less draggy airframe.

      Judging purely from available videos of what has been publicly demonstrated so far, the Su-35 does crazier stuff than the Su-57. The main air force strike aircraft in the air is the SU-30SM. Its equipment for the Air Force is somewhat different from the ostentatious and discussed. Su-35S is a narrow specialist, a pronounced hunter. Sniper if you like. It is purchased, but this is not the main strike aircraft.
      The best in the world undoubtedly Su-57. Its capabilities are impressive, but not all of its capabilities. This is a perspective 5+ generation aviation complex, with modernization up to 5 ++. His fights are in the future. There is nothing of the kind in the world today.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not quite right. Maneuverability aside, this plane can do quite a few things that the Raptor can't. For example, Raptor lacks IRST, so it CANNOT operate truly stealthily without support from other aircraft. The Su-57 can. Also the Su-57 has built in laser pods to blind heatseekers fired on it. F-22 can't do that. And there are many other things but we'll leave it at that for now ;)

    • @buckingMAT
      @buckingMAT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maneuverability aside and, just out of curiosity, how is the infrared sighting and tracking (IRST) in the SU-57 allow it to operate more stealthily? 🤔Regardless of AWACS or GCI, IRST is for tracking. I would agree-or disagree-with this if you said the SU-57 is more “stealthy” by tracking, shadowing and avoiding through IRST but NOT because of better stealth characteristics, better materials science and manufacturing expertise through the decades. Don’t think I’m busting your chops on this. Designers knew this and decided to take a more balanced approach hence why the side-facing radars, the really COOL directional infrared countermeasures system (the DIRCM turrets or “built in laser pods” as you call them), 3D thrust vectoring and other unique features of the SU-57.
      The F-22 CANNOT do certain things the SU-57 does and the SU-57 CANNOT do certain things the F-22 does. Sadly, lots of people are ignorant about this and people will continue to argue which is better because everyone thinks these two AWESOME aircrafts were designed to taylor to the same air combat doctrines. But that’s another really long subject and I have a flight to take tomorrow so we’ll leave it at that for now ;)

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@buckingMAT Agree. Any plane turning on a radar stops being 'truly stealthy'. The IRST can be used to detect targets without emitting anything. Thus a plane with such a device can head to a place where a plane or group have been detected (say, using GCI or naval radars) and this info can be fed to it by datalink, again, without the plane emitting anything.
      Then when it gets close enough, it can use the OLS (IRST) to completely pinpoint the threat. The Raptor would have to head to such a scenario with no other information than that provided by datalink as the jet itself wouldn't be able to scan the airspace without seriously risking giving its presence away. Of course, the Raptor is meant to function in a different way, like you said, both jets have been designed with different doctrines in mind. I just think the russian one is more versatile and adaptive. Never said Su-57 has better stealth than the Raptor. Think everyone agrees that the Raptor is to this day the stealthiest jet around from a pure RCS perspective. But RCS works only with radars, and to be TRULY stealthy you want no emissions at all. So there's that.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly not carrying weapons but it does carry quite a lot of fuel. Consider this: on the DCS sim, a Su-27 with tanks fully loaded will be able to perform an extreme aerobatic performance (comparable to what we see here, full of afterburner but not so much post-stall maneuvering) for about 12 to 15 minutes before running out of fuel at this rate. These shows are lasting typically 6 to 8 minutes and they use plenty of afterburner so their fuel tanks must be pretty well loaded up. Not full, but probably half or more, which is quite a few tons worth of kerosene. It's just physically impossible to perform such a display if there is not enough fuel aboard, and we can estimate that pretty accurately using DCS sim as a means of comparison. Food for thought ;)
