Mexico was my favorite stop at Epcot, growing up going to Disney from the 90s to 2000s. El Rio Del Tiempo will always be my fav version. Even as a kid I loved it, being an Indian Jones and History fan I felt I was entering the temple of doom everytime. Then seeing all the tropical locations, the funny sales people and the pretty carousel at the end. Loved it and made me interested in Mexican culture. Made my family ride it every time we visited Epcot lol. Even tho they didn't like it 😂. But I don't dislike the new version, it's cute and it's Disney themed which is why people go to Disney. But still will miss the old one 🥲 tysm for this Nostalgic video!!

El RÍo del Tiempo was my Favorite dark ride in Epcot. But man going into the Tunnel and seeing the Mayan high Priest. used to kind of scare me as a child. but my dad would tell me don't worry its just your great....great...great....great...great...great ancestors. welcoming you.

I remember as a kid in the 90’s feeling like this pavilion was geared toward adults and the ride was very serious in nature. I can see now that the imagineers were trying to give the best representation of Mexican history and culture, but it was sort of lost on me as a youngster. The Small World style bit and the catchy song at the end was fun, I’m glad they revamped it to include Panchito and José.

I always liked the rivers of time because it actually told the story of Mexico. What I will miss the most about the ride are the Mayan and Aztec warriors. I have always had an interest in mesoamerican culture. I also loved eating at the San angel inn because it had wonderful Mexican food yum yum.

I loved this pavilion as a kid. Growing up in the Northeast I didn't have much exposure to Mexican culture. The pyramid and Maya art were so fascinating to me. The inside of the plaza made me feel like I stepped into a different time and place. I felt like I could spend hours just wandering around the plaza. My family ate lunch at the restaurant once and it was certainly different (and better) than Taco Bell or my mom's tacos (ground beef with Ortega seasoning and crunchy taco shells) which was the only "Mexican" food I knew before. Looking back I'm sure it was a big reason I got interested in Mexican food and culture and decided to take Spanish in high school.

Loved reading this comment. Sums up a lot of my feelings about being able to experience World Showcase so much as a child, and especially during my teen years. Getting to experiences these little “slivers” of cultures from around the world-with people from those actual countries working there at EPCOT-really made me so much more curious about the world around me than any class in school could. I love them all but Mexico, China, Japan, and Morocco are especially “immersive” to me. Wander back far enough into the Japanese or Chinese gardens, or the backstreets of Morocco, and you’ll really wonder where exactly you are sometimes ;) I loved going here so much that, when I was 12, I asked my family if I could leave them at magic kingdom and go spend the rest of the day at EPCOT, and after picking a meeting spot, they felt safe enough to let me take the monorail there and back (no cellphone for me in 1997 either, though I might have had a beeper 😂).
I also remember spending the day here on my 16th birthday! I’m 39 now, and going there still never gets old ;) I’m thankful too that World Showcase is the least changed area of EPCOT. I’m still finding new things to experience there every time I go, especially the food (I was not always successful at convincing my parents to spent the $$$ at those restaurants 😆 and I still have yet to experience Le Cellier in Canada!).

I love the Mexico pavilion! Thanks for posting these, Martin! It amazes me to think that, even with a lower-budget, smaller-scale attraction Disney could still create a compelling atmosphere with a fun musical score and memorable showpieces. Sure, it uses screens, but I find screens in attractions like this and Dreamflight less offensive in that they (1) don't completely replace physical sets, and (2) aren't really intended to create an illusion of depth. It's more like little travelogue films interspersed among the physical sets.

The intrusion of Disney characters into EPCOT totally subverts the whole thing that made EPCOT special and distinctive in its first glorious decade (1982-1994) which was that it was a separate place from the world of Disney characters which belonged exclusively in the Magic Kingdom and MGM Studios. You put them in EPCOT and EPCOT is nothing more than a Magic Kingdom extension devoid of its own individual flavor. That's why with the single exception of the 1986 Spaceship Earth change to the Cronkite narration I've yet to see a single change in EPCOT, whether Future World or World Showcase that was a change for the better. I'm just sorry El Rio Del Tiempo couldn't have survived a couple years more so that we could have seen the ride preserved in a HD recording.

Love it. Remember one particular firework pattern in the sky at the end that I noticed as a kid and again throughout all my future visits to WDW. Anyone know what the narrator says at the end of the ride by the map? I always thought that sounded really cool and again another thing I always remembered when riding

It sounds like the Imagineers put a nice little "Easter Egg" in the pavilion's music! When you listen to the music beginning 36:20 and continuing for the next minute or so, do you hear a familiar melody? If you're an Epcot fan or old enough, it may/should ring a bell. It made me go back and listen to see if I was hearing what I was hearing when I watched this video. If not, look/listen to this Martin Video starting at 41:43 th-cam.com/video/f2AOIQAGaIU/w-d-xo.html Do/did you hear it? Before or after I put up this comment?
