  • A beautifully original 1935 Bulldog Lanz tractor found in the desert outback of Australia and living out it's retirement in Canada. This 38hp model has been lovingly brought back to working condition all the while preserving it's weather beaten exterior as a testament to it's rugged and reliable design. Like all Lanz hot bulbs, it is a single cylinder semi diesel that operates on a two stroke cycle that allows it to rotate in both directions equally well. A special thanks to Peter Philipsen for many hours of meticulous work to get her running well again.

Thanks for that, great to see that it has gone to a good home. My father worked with, and restored, four or five of these big single cylinder tractors, including the Australian KL Bulldog.
They were quite popular in earlier times around the northern parts of Victoria in Australia, really great old tractors with amazing character

Fascinating, i heard they were well liked in Australia due to their ability to work in great heat.

@@Rainhill1829 Yes they worked well no matter how hot it was, they were just simple tractors that were easy to work on, and we found them to be very reliable.
My father owned various ones (and later on, some John Deere's) from the late 1960's up until about 2005, when he finally sold off all the remaining Bulldog's after he
retired. I still have many great memories of these workhorses, they were just great old tractors that could work hard all day

That is the wonderful thing about the desert because you can old cars trucks and tractors and even though the engine and suspension can be wore out the body is in great shape. I love those Lanz Bulldog tractors a lot. I wonder if these awesome German tractors were ever sold in the USA.

I'm a car guy but watched a single one of these Bulldog videos now i've got them recommended always!
    Clearly they are durable machines.
I have a question for the specialists:
What is the torch heating? Some kind of ignition system? I'd guess something like a glowplug but I am not sure.

Very good question, these engines are called “hot bulb diesels” or “semi diesels”. They effectively were the final development milestone in the diesel engine as we know it today. They are a compression ignition engine but lack the compression to light off the fuel charge, so a glow bulb in the cylinder acts as the heat source to ignite the fuel.

It took a great deal if negotiating with the Australian authorities to purchase it, the main argument being nobody had so much as touched it in 50 years.
