Andy, hi's artwork are beautiful.
Congratulations!!!!
Waww this is gorgeous 👍.
Love your job Andy!!!
Loved your technique and the confidence of your brush strokes in this one. Your use of the toned surface was very enlightening. Thank you!
This was one of the best plein air videos I've seen on TH-cam so far. 😊 Wonderful job Andy. The camera perspective was great to look at the scene and at the painting at the same time!
Thanks Trupti.
The sky so wonderful color❤
I have watched many uploads but few have shown a better way of painting clouds. Really enjoyed watching this relaxed and instructive painting lesson. Thanks for posting.
You make it look so simple. It’s just stunning!
Really enjoyed all your plain air painting videos Andy! They're well produced and a pleasure to watch. Thanks for cool painting tips, I'm inspired to get outdoors with my easel more than before.
+Victor Dmitriyev Thanks Victor. I'm glad you enjoyed them.
beautifuly done and i love that phrase at the begining : "welcome to my studio" :D haha, so nice
That was lovely. A simple scene but brought to life by the light and the sky.
Andy, I watch this lesson "Barrow Road & Stirling Afternoon" frequently. I really admire your work, your style of painting and your personality. GOOD Show. Thank you!!!
Thanks Mysti.
love this painting,Full of light. Well done Andy...
I love the red undertones- great tip
Please, please, please, share more. I blew through your three plein air paintings in one fell swoop and would love to see more. They're amazing and I've learned so much.
Looking forward to anything new you do. Thanks for posting your work.
I love this tutorial. And I really like what you say...."if you don't have a go, you'll never get it". True that! Thanks Andy.
Great job communicating..on point..easy to understand. Thank you and I hope you give us more of the same. Really loved the watch Andy. Now to implement.."give it a go"
I found this to be such a great video - I have always used a burnt umber underpaint - never thought of red like this - love the cloud effect and the big brush. A great demonstration how not to fussy - need a venue to sell some art now - thanks, Chris
Ah finally found your channel after discovering it a couple weeks ago then losing it lol. Love your style of painting and the way you talk, gotta love them aussies. Im subbed.
wonderful painting and really enjoyed the audio. watched this a few times, never gets dull.
These videos are great, especially for students who are trying to learn plein aire painting (like me.) Keep on posting!!
Fantastic Andy ! love your work and thank you so much for showing us , really appreciated
Hi Andy, love your painting. Your clouds are beautiful! Painting is such a challenge, you make it look so easy. I hope I can paint with such confidence one day! Thank you for your videos.
Thank you Rosemary. Rest assured, it is a challenge, and always should be. Confidence arrives in little bursts from time to time as we improve. Then the challenge returns.
Thanks so much for being so generous in sharing this tutorial. Beautiful painting.
Mate that is one big brush!
Love it.
Love your painting style, must be great to have such good weather for it.
Away now to watch some more of you painting lol.
I love the fresh, impressionistic brushstrokes....
Great work, Sir! I absolutely love your style. Thanks for sharing. Wish you good luck!
This video go direct to "my favorites". I second what was said in the other comments, great job and good explain, I like all the others but this one is special. keep it up and thanks.
Nice work, and nice video! Thanks for sharing...new subscriber 😉👍
Thank you. Hopefully I will do some more videos soon.
Nice one Andy, thanks a stack.
Absolutely fantastic!
I love your work please keep doing these videos.
Great artist. Thanks from the UK
Thanks Andy, very inspiring.
Lovely painting
Thanks for sharing Andy. I shared this with my group and page, The Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Society, on Facebook.
really love this painting, thanks for sharing.
Amazing work!
Very talented and inspirational! Thank you and please make more videos.
Ryan Moskal Thanks Ryan. I make the videos by myself so it's a lot of work to get a successful outcome. Quite a few that I have done haven't proved useful because I stand in front of the camera too much or I didn't notice the camera turned itself off (it does that a lot) :) and constantly thinking about the camera means I'm not thinking about the painting as much as I should. I hope to do more one day.
simply awesome oh my god what a stroke.u beauty
Thank you for the lesson. The camera perspective is helpful, as I am able to learn from watching how you paint.
dan watkins Thanks Dan.
Beautiful!
Amazing work 👌🏻
I would love to be a long distance student of yours! I love the impressionist style the best
beautiful!!!
Great!!!!!!
LOVELY!
righto!!....good point about the clouds.....paint them to fit the composition....for instance I like that large round cloud in the upper right corner, it echoes the round, green tree below it.....took me years to figure out what to do with cloud shapes
Que céu espetacular! Parabéns.
Very good
Thank you Andy for Sharing:)
Very Impressed Mr. D.!! Colors are placed directly, no muddling around! All in all 1st rate Plein -air.. BTW: Do they sell brushes other than FLATS down under?. LOL.
It was so beneficial.Tank you
Wow, Andy! Amazing!!!
Congratulations, you're a great artist!
Super inscribed on your channel! :)
the simple demo is a great help
Sangat bagus,jadi kepingin nglukis..
enjoyed it. thanks for the tips.
'Winter' in Australia means green foliage and cumulus clouds. It is in the southern hemisphere.
amazing! =)
Bravo
Thanks everyone. These videos have proved far more popular than I'd expected. I have another one waiting to be edited and uploaded so keep checking in or subscribe for updates.
Great example!
Good work
Thank you for sharing your videos, they are inspiring. After working with acrylics for a few years, I'm getting into plein air painting with oils. I really like way you use your brushes. Could you recommend a set that would fill the large and small needs of plein air painting? Also, what are you using for your camera, it looks like it does a wonderfull job of capturing the colors both in your painting and of the scene? Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos.
Brushes come and go. I've actually gone back to standard hog bristle, but these were "cheap" synthetics. I used a Canon DSLR to shoot the video in 720p. The biggest problem with my model is it has a ten minute limit, so I have to remember to keep restarting it :)
You're a frugal man with your tools, but you use that large Bright (or Flat?) brush with skill.
I'll be back to see more.
Thank you.
There's quite a few comments here I haven't replied to, but thank you to all of you.
Hey Andy. Nice work, particularly like your brush strokes. Speaking of which, there's one cloud highlight you laid down within the tree at left - your next stroke was in the middle of the sky (w/o cleaning your brush) - how did you keep the green from the tree from tainting the brush/colour?
Sometimes colours do get picked up. I try for it not to happen but with plein air, I tend to move pretty quickly so it's not always avoidable. Sometimes I get away with it :)
Your work is masterly, Andy. I love the way you paint gum trees. Are you based in Perth by chance?
+David Lancaster Thanks David. I'm actually based in Mt Barker, not too far from where this was painted.
Very nice
I love your color choices and the way you see - thank you for the inspiration. I think you're amazing!
You say this is oil on board - what type of board?
I usually paint on MDF primed with acrylic gesso.
Thanks guys. I hope to do more, with a variety of subjects.
dear andy, how long did you need for this painting ? best wishes from germany
1 to 1.5 hours at most.
Excuse me, about the reddish background that you give to the canvas before you start painting. Wait until it dries or paints the surface of it being fresh ?.
thanks and good work. :)
Thanks Ronald. The red wash dries a little bit because it's very thin and soaks into the gesso primer but I don't wait for it to dry. I don't always use a wash.
great thanks
over the course of painting, do you tend to paint in thin layers especially in the beginning? I just wonder because when I paint, I tend to put too much paint on my brush causing my painting to look muddied.
Yes. I start thin, sometimes using solvent (turps, low odour or mineral spirits) or some alkyd medium (similar to Liquin), or sometimes just spreading the paint thinner or even rubbing it it with a clean, lint-free rag. Also, try to avoid adding white as much as possible until the thicker, lighter layer. White is a short-cut to mud.
Holding the brush flatter and not doing repeat brushstrokes as you progress can also help to stop the paint digging into the bottom layer.
***** Thank you! This is really helpful, especially your suggestion about brush strokes. I find that my paintings starts to look patchy because I make similar strokes.
I usually have my thinner in a cup, and I don't know where to put it when I paint outside. What do people normally do?
I have a tin that I hang off the easel drawer.
Andy do you do any plain air workshops in WA ? or anywhere ? love your style. xxx
sorry...plein air...auto correct struggles with the plein word ugh
Hi Chris. Sorry but I'm not doing any workshops at the moment. Maybe later this year, or next.
more!!!!
I love this video, I keep coming back to this. What are you using for your medium?
Alkyd medium and few drops of mineral spirits! 😝
+Khanh Ngo That's it :) The brand I tend to use is Art Spectrum's "Liquol", because it's Australian and matches the brand of paint I use. Many artists use W&N Liquin, and there are other brands to choose from.
That looks like a soft acrylic brush?
+Wanda Doyle - It is a cheap synthetic brush. They give a nice edge, but they don't last very long.
Andy, I do hope that you will be doing more painting videos. I learn so much from you, but there are only 3 that I have found. Will you be doing more or have you moved on to something else?
Thanks for your interest. I have had a bit of a break from painting but hope to get back to making some videos soon.
What type of brush are you using?
Very nice painting. Pretty good video. I have a suggestion. Next time, instead of showing the painting and the back of your head, show the painting and the scene that you're painting.
Ah... found your cloud vid!
The music reminds me of Chocobo
