Sorry Susan I gotta disagree with Whitlock. The Allman Brothers during this time imo were the best. Personally I am so glad Duane didn't take Eric up on joining the band. Nothing against D and D, love Layla but am addicted to "at Fillmore East".
Inventing solos like this LIVE, on the spot, that anyone else would be lucky to craft even in a studio, is the legend of Eric Clapton. Few can sustain interest for 15-20 minutes and keep the energy pulsing, spinning out a continuous pattern of ideas. And no back up soloist. That's Eric Clapton at his finest.
As hooked on heroin as he was at the time, it was some of his best playing ever. The time with cream and the early to mid 90’s when he was back to the blues were as great. These four guys were absolutely awesome together. Ego and drugs torn them apart in less than a year and a couple of months together.
OH MAN! The memories! Gotta' thank my father, Tsgt. Joseph Lopez (R.I.P. dad) for taking a 16 year old kid from Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton - Ohio to see this show! Seemed like we drove all night in or '66 Chevelle to get there!
Thank God for Fathers like yours!! Sounds like you had a GREAT time together. Pass it on if you can. Rock on , live long and enjoy the memories, even though sometimes you might get teared up ,,its cool..
HI WATT same age as you, and same reaction. Was lucky enough to hear him working his magic on an acoustic guitar in Fla. sometime in the 70's, from the first riff I heard him improvise I knew he was blessed with some musical magic at his core. A friend then told me, "thats Clapton, the guy from Cream" For the longest time I thought I was alone in thinking that his playing got better and evolved higher after they broke up. This version is a rare gem!
Jim Gordon is the best drummer breathing air...please go to the JIM GORDON FaceBook page and sign the petition for his release in September 2019...he will be 73 this July ....it's time !
Jim Gordon's drumming never failed any band he was with until he himself became incapacitated that it took down more than just a music career .....so very sad ...fuck mental illness and it's haters ..
Aren't there medications to reign in his version of schizophrenia, or whatever it is? If alcohol trips his proclivity to hear voices, there have to be effective cures by now.
Inspired performance.....Clapton and Jim Gordon on fire for this one. There are are so many versions of this song on the tube from Derek and the Dominoes. I doubt they ever played the song the same twice. That's just amazing.
I saw them October 30, 1970 at the university gym at State U of NY at Albany. The whole crowd was on acid (or so it seemed). I was sitting on the floor about 10 feet away from Clapton...when he walked out someone said "look at him, he's great". He was touched by magic, you could see it and feel it. When he and Duane Allman did the complementary solos to this song the audience was just surfing a big cosmic wave of bliss...they played for 2 hrs., but it was timeless. One of the greatest concerts I was ever lucky enough to be at...everyone was on a high for days afterward. Those WERE the days!
It was a belated B-Day gift from my father! December 1970ish! Some War Memorial Hall, i think! Already was a BIG Allman fan, but to see them both together was magical! I destroyed my "air guitar" that night ;o)
I know just what you mean ! Same thing happened to me when I seen D & D at The Fillmore East on October 24th The Best concert I ever seen, & I seen a lot over the past 53 years !
I was at this show, literally sitting on the floor right in front of the two foot high stage. There were two shows and they didn't clear the audience for the second one. By the second set Clapton was tuned up pretty well on whatever he was tuning himself up on, including beer as I remember, but he didn't miss a beat or a note, at least none I heard because I was tuned up myself. A great memory from a great night when the world was young!
My favorite Clapton band but one thing about Eric is like all great artists he keeps evolving and always surprises. Sorry to hear about the guy still stuck in Cream.
oh hell, I was there! we weren't 'jaded' so much as .. well, really stoned out our damn skulls on acid. (as were many) and the audience (not evident here) was going quite mad!! that is, if this is the venue I think it to be. not the fancy place with the turning stage and all.. if you couldn't hear the audience, just cause of how it was mic'ed. (we sat to the left on some amps which some N Philly speed freaks stuck us up on). other side was where a band would exit.. you know that audience was so bombed that when they came off (front o the stage, Eric holding his guitar aloft) no one even .. grabbed at them?! just .. kinda went right by people that hey; these guys are freaking Derek and the Dominos, world class and walking right past us!!
Holy Jesus this may have replaced the Fillmore Concert version as my favorite .... seems I'm not alone... 61 and still being mesmerized by EC, BW, JG, and CR! 😮
I seen Derek & The Dominos twice ! Fillmore East & Capitol Theater. I recorded both shows and they were both fantastic ! This version of WDLGTBSS from the Electric Factory is right up there Fantastic !!
Holly molly the whole band is on fire. I’ve heard both live versions from Live at the Fillmore and In concert. Both the band is great. I like the Solo on In concert more than Live at the Fillmore. But the solo here is Clapton and the band at the top of there game. I love the tone of Brownie better than Blackie. It would have been nice if who ever was in charge of the 50th anniversary album would have found some of these recordings and cleaned them up. It would blow people away how great Derek and the Dominos were.
WOW!!!! Thought I heard every live and recorded version of my favorite Derek and the D. Song... I suppose NOT. As mentioned, every one was on fire. Hard to believe this is 50 friggin years old!!!!

Man...this is something else...very raw...Gordon just driving the whole thing, Radle in the pocket - as usual - Whitlock kind of floating over and under and Clapton, good lawd, top of his game here. What's fascinating to me (I've been playing well over 40 years now) is listening the little set pieces (for lack of a better term) that he uses that are in the other solos of versions of this song...sometimes they go the same way then veer off, other times hits that set piece and just goes in the opposite direction. I grew up on the "In Concert" version but this one...damn...

Absolutely flawless execution combined with high-wire emotions... Clapton at his best. Head over heels better than the Fillmore version which I previously rated as the best version of this song.
Probably my favorite Dominos bootleg! Sounds great and the whole show has quite a few songs that they didn't play for long, such as "Mean Old World" and "Motherless Children" - with EC really letting loose on slide. Interesting thing to listen for on this track is when Eric plays the riff to "Eyesight to the Blind" at 2:11. Absolutely fantastic show!

Went to the EF sometime in 1970 (AIR) and saw Mungo Jerry, Humble Pie, and Derek and the Dom's on the SAME BILL on a Sunday night. Crowd was milling around on the floor of what, as I remember , was just like an empty warehouse with a stage..no seating. Clapton walked by on the way up, looking like a deer in the headlights..probably stoned...carrying his Strat. I just stared , dumb-struck that I was in the same room with him.
