  • In this video, I will show you how to install Huawei eNSP in Windows 10. This used to be an easy task until 2020 when the Windows 10 20H1 build came out and caused a problem running eNSP. In this video, I will show you how to work around that problem. This solution is valid to the time of this videos upload.
If you need eNSP, Huawei no longer hosts it on their website, but you can download a safe copy from me at
    drive.google.com/drive/folder...
which I got while Huawei still hosted this tool.
You will also need this version of Oracle VirtualBox, which you can get from me here
    drive.google.com/drive/folder...
    or from Oracle Directly here
    www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downl...
If you do not want to use eNSP to learn Huawei’s enterprise networking devices, you will have to get real equipment. This solution is free, and was free and available directly from Huawei a few years ago.
(at the time of upload, TH-cam wont let me make external links clickable, so until my ID verification helps, or my channel history goes right, you will have to copy and past the URLs)

Just an update to say that this procedure works 100% on Win7 . Before starting I uninstalled older versions of WinPcap . NpCap , Wireshark and Virtual Box , which I already had installed . I then followed Dark Bird Tech´s Win10 procedure to the letter and my 4 machines started up at the 1st attempt . Takes a bit longer with my ol´ Lenovo Win 7 laptop , but it works , which is the main thing . Thanks again for taking the time to make the video and sort out the s/w .

could you please make video for windows 11's eNSP installation. I have followed every step but when starting AR, AC or AP it displays "Failed to start device AR1 Error Code: 40"

    • @darkbirdtech8023
      @darkbirdtech8023  ปีที่แล้ว

The Windows 11 video is in the works right now.
So, that error code happens a lot - and it sadly doesn't correspond to one specific problem. I am also planning to do a video with the errors and fixes for them but until then, you can try the following.
-Double check Client Hyper-V is not installed
-Double check you can open VirtualBox in v 5.2.44
-Double check Npcap is NOT installed and that you have the old WinPcap installed
Then the next thing you can try is to re-register those images:
-Clear your topology/work space of all devices (will give you another error later if you dont)
-Click on "Menu", it is just to the left of the minimise button in the top right.
      -Choose the "Tools" option
-In the Tools pop-out menu, choose "Register"
-In the window that pops open tick the boxes for the AR_Base, AC_Base, AP_Base and click register.
-You should hopefully see text that tells you the device registered successfully. (If you dont, uncheck all the boxes except the one that failed and try again).
As a last resort, you can try completely uninstalling everything, do a reboot and re-install again. Sometimes that works to fix error 40 - much to my frustration.
I did do the recording in fresh Windows 10 VM. So depending on your situation, you could try running it in a VM (the WiFi gets a bit funky, but everything else mostly works) or you could dual-boot your computer with another instance of Windows that has nothing else installed apart from eNSP and supporting software.
Sadly, Huawei no longer supports and updates eNSP and we have to find work arounds all the time.
If you still get some hassles, comment back and we will take it from there.

Hi, thanks a lot for your help, everything was going great until I tried to open my previous topo files and they did open but it's all empty. Additionally, it doesn't save a topo files either, tried using "save as" but didn't work out :( could you please give me any advice?

    • @darkbirdtech8023
      @darkbirdtech8023  ปีที่แล้ว

I actually cover this in the next video I am working on, but I will give you something you can try now.
When you do some config on the devices, you need to return to user-view, the prompt will look like "", and run the save command (save) and tap Y when prompted.
Then you can save the topology. Just pick somewhere and pick a name for the topo file. You can check before you close eNSP that a folder was created with a .topo file and there should be some sub-folders too with crazy looking names (those will be the saved-config files you created by running the save command). That's how I do it, and it hasnt failed me yet.
I have had a situation where I crashed eNSP (apparrently the software freaks out if it uses more than 48GB of RAM, despite the hardware still having more to give) and I lost all of my unsaved config. Probably the only time I ever rage quit anything.
Anyways - if it does it to you again, let me know and we will try work it out. Sorry for the lackluster and delayed reply - my day job is getting to me for some reason.

      You can try the following:
      >Make sure you have VBox 5.2.44 installed and that you can launch it.
      >Make sure Hyper-V is not there (assuming a Pro or Enterprise version of Windows)
      >Make sure the firewall you are using is not blocking it. Sometimes, turning the firewall off can help, but I don't like telling people to decrease their secuirty posture.
      >Check in your BIOS/UEFI that any and all Virtualisation features are turned on.
      >Try opening a blank topology, with no devices in it and try re-registering the devices. To do that go to "Menu" then "Tools" and then "Register Deice". In the Window that opens up, check all the boxes and choose register. You should see messages that hopefully say "Register successfully" on each device. If they dont say that, try that device again.
      >You can also try uninstalling it all, rebooting and re-installing it. That sometimes helps.
If all else fails, and you have enough CPU and RAM on your computer, you can try making a Windows VM and installing it in there. That may work, albeit sluggishly and there will be some odd quirks that you have to accept.
Huawei has essentially abandoned eNSP and left it to people like me to figure out how to keep it going.

Sir, I've followed all your installation process, but I still have error code 40. device can't run even after registration

    • @darkbirdtech8023
      @darkbirdtech8023  ปีที่แล้ว

Error 40 is caused by a bunch of things, sadly. If the registration and reregistration doesnt help try these:
      >Double check that you can open Virtual Box. Sometimes the isntall goes wrong.
      >Make sure Client Hyper-V is removed as a Windows feature. I am unaware of any other hypervisors messing with Oracle Virtual Box, but that doesnt mean there arent more.
      >Check your Anti Virus isnt blocking it (unlikely, but possible)
      >Make sure you are letting it through the firewall.
      >Check in your BIOS that you have your CPU's virtualisation features turned on.
      >(Sometimes works) remove everything you installed for eNSP, reboot the computer, re-install it all again, reboot, and try the re-registering.
Hopefully you come right. Sadly, the error codes are not very helpful due to several things going wrong. eNSP 1.3 reached EOL in 2020, and no newer version was released. I try my best to keep it going for how usefuil it is for people to learn Huawei's VRP devices.
Let me know if you came right with any of those steps, or if it is still giving you trouble.

Hi again . Unfortunately I've ran into the FC40 as well . The only device that boots up is the switch . The other 3 give FC40 . I've checked the following . Client Hyper-V isn't installed in Windows features . I've re-registered everying in the eNSP Tools menu . I've checked my Firewall settings and allowed both private and public for the eNSP related stuff . I checked the BIOS and Virtualisation was enabled . I haven't checked the Anti Virus , but I'm just using Windows Security . I rebooted . Virtual box opens fine . The 5 machines are powered off , which I assume is right . I haven't tried removing and re-installing everything yet , as that'll be plan B :) Not sure if you've come across any other things that might need checking ? Thx in advance .

This is why I love eNSP (/sarcasm).
So the two newest pain points are the following:
Go to search for "Core Isolation" and turn off Memory Integrity if it is on.
The other is the Windows Sandbox feature, which you might need to turn off too, if your computer has it.
You're Plan B might work for reasons unknown to me. Plan C would be if you can run a VM with a healthy amount of CPU cores and RAM allocated to it, you can run eNSP on Windows 7 or 8.1. It will work, but somethings may be a bit janky.

    • @darkbirdtech8023

That happens. The switch is simulated in software, but everything else runs with virtual box.
      Try the following.
      >Double check that you can open Virtual Box. Sometimes the isntall goes wrong.
      >Make sure Client Hyper-V is removed as a Windows feature. I am unaware of any other hypervisors messing with Oracle Virtual Box, but that doesnt mean there arent more.
      >Delete all the devices in your topology, and click the "Menu" item byt the top right of the screen, choose "Tools" and select "Register Device". There will be check boxes. Click them and click the Register button and make sure they all say the registration went ok (think I must make a TH-cam short for this).
      >Check your Anti Virus isnt blocking it (unlikely, but possible)
      >Make sure you are letting it through the firewall.
      >Check in your BIOS that you have your CPU's virtualisation features turned on.

You might have opened the CLI without starting the device. Either click on it and press the green play button, or right click on it and choose the start option. You should get a series of ### on the screen for a bit and then you'll be booted and able to play around.

hi ....what is the solution for Error 40 on routers

    • @darkbirdtech8023
      @darkbirdtech8023  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I'm starting to think I need to call Error 40 the "middle finger" error code, because it doesn't tell us much other than it is failing to launch anything that runs as a VM, which is most Layer 3 devices.
Here are some common things you can do:
Check if Virtual Box opens. If you get an error message from Windows about it not being safe, then you need to do the v5.2.44 installation (installer exe included in download).
Check that you haven't got Client Hyper-V installed under your Windows Features. It conflicts with VirtualBox.
Check that your software Firewall is not blocking anything to do with eNSP.
Check that any virtualization features are turned on in your BIOS/UEFI. Intel and AMD sometimes have them off by default, even for top tier processors.
Try Re-registering the devices. In eNSP, click "Menu", then "Tools" then "Register Device". In the window that pops up, click the check boxes and click register. Make sure that each 'paragraph' of details for each device says something to the effect of OK. If they don't, then just redo it.
You can try uninstalling everything, rebooting the computer and redoing the installation. It sometimes works.
      Extreme measures:
If your computer has a good amount of RAM (8GB or more), you could create a VM and install eNSP in that VM. I would recommend Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 for that. Unsupported and Legacy versions of Windows are a little less dangerous when they run in a VM.
Be aware though, that somethings work weirdly in eNSP if it runs in a VM.
If you have the ability to do so, you could dual boot your computer, with an older version of Windows (7 or 8.1 again).
Catch is, when dual booting, you need to install the older OS first and then the newer one so that the newer version of Windows' bootloader overwrites the older one.
This does mean, you will need to back up all your data, settings, apps & licences, and reconfigure your computer. Do this only if you want to. Also, you will have a legacy version of Windows running on the computer directly, which may be a security risk for you.
Sadly, eNSP sometimes just wont work on some Windows 10 computers, even though everything seems fine and the exact steps I showed were followed. I really wish Huawei would bring out a new version.

Oh how I wish... Wireshark and Virtualbox are fine but the eNSP application itself is a Windows executable, and I have not had much luck getting it to run in Wine.
What you can do is run a Windows VM on Linux and it should work in that. You will get some odd bugs with eNSP in a VM. For example, sometimes, it wont let you add the missing device images (th-cam.com/video/WH7xrq8Mqx8/w-d-xo.html), and if you try do a little enterprise WLAN, you can't launch more than one AP at a time without them going crazy.
What really bugs me is that it seems Huawei is treating eNSP as abandonware and have subsequently created a Linux distro...
