Finishing The "Slavic Razor" forged by MAN AT ARMS

While handling this blade I did my best to stick to the straight razor theme Matt and Ilya had in mind.
Since the damascus is already so rich in details and also because of the integral bolster I decided not to make a segmented handle construction like I usually do for my knives.
Instead I focused my effort on the tang, filing a pattern and laminating the olive wood with a black and a solid brass liner to match the pins colors and materials.
Overall I'm very pleased with how sleek the handle came out and I think it goes well with the blade!

2:09 Tang was hard near the bolster, had to soften it with heat protecting the bolster with a wet rag

Beautiful work. I've enjoyed this collab a lot. The rippled thorny vine design you did in the handle goes perfectly with the ladder pattern they did in the blade. What an incredible work of art.

That whole “knife”, almost a short sword is so badass. Love the design, love the Damascus, love the optical illusion of the blade edge where it looks like it might be serrated kind of but isn’t. the scales and file work on the handle was amazing, I would buy and use that knife constantly. Just awesome

"Slavic Razor" I like the name. I like that its damascus steel. I dont remember slavs using these anywhere, but slavic culture is so big and differs from place to place. The steel seem very soft. What steel is it? You file in to it like if it was wood.
The reason the steel is soft is because they don’t harden the tang. Leaving the tang soft helps absorb shock fro hitting things and believe it or not adds durability because it’s not brittle. That’s why he had to hear the top in order to get the drill bit through it because the top of the tang got heat treated a little and it was very hard.
Never seen that kind of wood treatment. What the heck was that?
I think he got all the moisture out of the wood, and replaced it with resin. like wood micarta I guess? not sure.
@@Cement_Smoothie Pretty sure that's exactly what he did. Bake the wood to make sure it's dry, then use resin to fill in any voids in the wood and add integrity.

Basically he just pressure treated it with the cactus stuff, then heat treated that. The heat would have brought the natural oils to the surface to be scrapped off. That handle will last until that blade dies. The process makes the wood very hard wearing.

Dried them in the little kiln, stored in the bag to prevent them from absorbing moisture from the air until he was ready to stabilize them with cactus juice resin. Got the resin, placed the wood in a container, filled the container with cactus juice resin, then placed in a vacuum chamber. Vacuum pulled out air, allowing the stabilizing resin to penetrate deeply into the wood. Removed the wood from chamber and resin, wrapped in foil and placed back in kiln, as you have to heat cactus juice to get it to cure fully.
@@gorbashin see, I was just guessing. I knew it was to stabilize the wood, but I figured it was to displace the natural moisture, and a heat treat harden it to prevent splitting later on. Thank you for the clarification

Wow! I wasn't sure where you were going filling the handle edge with epoxy after doing all that file work, but when the pattern appeared I was amazed at what it turned into! Sublime craftsmanship and artistic vision.
