Haven't watched this yet, but cannot wait - the Transnote is still conceptually one of my favorite computers ever. I'm very fortunate to have one in working shape with all of the relevant software and documentation - battery even holds a charge still!
Absolutely love watching these kinds of videos. Fantastic chat here. Very interesting to hear the thinking behind the product! Much appreciated. Thanks
OH YES - I have used a bunch of ThinkPad tablets, Yogas, the Kindle Scribe, Rocketbooks... and I secretly still wish something like this (modernized, of course) would attempt to come to the market, haha. Maybe I'm just picky, but nothing's giving me a revolutionary impression yet. Maybe there is no pleasing me or maybe pen & paper is just that good. I think we're getting close, though. Love the talks with David as always
Hello Thomas, Again a nice video, I love you Think Design series ! :) The idea to interview members of IBM / Lenovo staff is very nice ! Here in France, the Transnote is probably the most elusive laptop ever ! I have only seen documentations, videos and read one or two articles about it, but never seen one in real life. I saw one a year or two on the second hand market but it was beat to death and sold for spare parts. Honestly, it's so strange that it's not a machine I'd like to have in my collection. Perhaps in the future but that's not a machine I search actively. Even the S30 is less elusive than this one. I've never seen it in real life but from time to time, I seen one sold on ebay, often at the other end of the world (as it was made for the asian market, it's no surprise). I saw one sold as new on a forum several years ago (2017 if my memory is good), and it cost 2000 $ ! Even if new, I tought it was too expensive. So I wait patiently for a good opportunity. Do you plan to make a episode about this one or about the S31 one day ? It would be a nice addition to the one you made with the 240x (a machine I'd like to also add to my collection). Oh, and I've suscribed to your channel. Not the thing I do often (I've suscribed only to 2 at this time) but you make quality content and it's always a pleasure to watch your Thinkpads videos ! Keep up the good work ! :) W.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I do have more TransNote content planned, just about finding the time. As for Japanese exclusive machines, they are indeed rare and can command high prices which makes them difficult to acquire. That being said, I think you'll like what is coming next.
This was drool-tastic when it came out. A few years back, I saw it listed on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. Price was quite good and I think it was complete, but I had to resist buying it, as it would just sit in a box somewhere. Regardless of its commercial failure, this is a device that the team could show off in its portfolio, along with the 701C. There's probably a lot of ideas that could be carried over to the next product.
I think it was an interesting look as to what could be but was probably made a little early and the technology has gone in a different direction. I sometimes think of the X1 Fold as a great grand kid or some other kind of relation.

Yeah, you'd think pen computing would be further along than it is now.
Such a great design!
They worked hard to make it as good as possible. 😂

And then came the first-gen Yoga Book with its paper digitizer. I loved mine.
PS there are a couple TransNotes on eBay.
Yep, there are a few floating around. I've had one for years but its state of functioning has fluctuated over the years.
