🍁🍂🎃 Have you checked out my DITL videos?? I really want to share more with you about my day-to-day life but I am trying to keep it fun & an opportunity to normalize this lifestyle, if that makes sense! Check out my latest one ▸▸▸ th-cam.com/video/B7gKLqz39bc/w-d-xo.html
Hi! I just wanted to say I love your content, and thanks for the information. I will be getting one of thoes misto thingamajigs and I will be baking so much 🍞 bread!
We have so many plastic free first aid alternatives over here. My family have always used zam-buk antiseptic cream then painted and re used the tins haha. That might just be cause I was raised by my grandparents who have stuck to using plastic free methods they grew up with
Got to go to dragon's den or shark tank to get money for that business idea. Don't want anyone beating you to the punch. Could be useful to explore more and corner the market.
Talking about the pet hair rollers, these things were used before the sticky rollers appeared in market, I have one in my house, it's like 15 years old, people switched to the sticky ones, bcuz they are easier and faster to use
I have one I never hear mentioned... it’s kinda random but whenever I use it I think about how it’s zero waste and no one mentions them. Crystal glass nail file! 🤷🏻♀️😂 I’ve had one for years now and never ever have to buy disposable nail files and their plastic packaging ever again. A crystal glass nail file is also better for your nails. It doesn’t rip your nail up the way a normal file does. They last forever and never dull. You just rinse it under water when it gets too dusty and it’s like brand new again!
melinda martinez no problem! Haha I went to cosmetology school, so beauty related items have always been a part of my life. So suddenly when I started becoming more zero waste I feel like I came across a good amount of beauty related items to replace my more wasteful options! A lot of them I either never see mentioned or rarely hear about them. Maybe if the information were out there more, people would switch. I find a lot of people continue using wasteful products because they want convenience and don’t even realize there are reusable options!
Ma TIlde right!!! Mine is about that old too! As long as you take care of them they last forever! And mines always in my handbag, you never know when you need a nail file! 😂
I swear aerosol oil is such an american thing. Ive never seen that here before in Europe. Like.. just use a little bit of oil and spread it around.. its not bad for you xD
I have seen and bought cooking oil in a can up here in finland, but, it was such a huge waste of space and time 🤣 I have my old old old old silicon brush that works like a charm, and i oil my things that need oiling with it. No need for spraycans in the kitchen
can you do a “what i still waste” video??? i know you don’t do a trash jar thing and i’m curious how much trash you produce even with all of your zero waste methods bc ✨nobody’s perfect✨
I have felt the same for a while. One thing you can do is search for a eco brick organization near you. Basically you can put any plastic trash into it until it is packed and they will use it as a brick to build low cost houses. I do this with a lot of pill bottles and containers and all that unavoidable stuff to keep it out of landfill. I don’t know why this is not talked about much
Hey just to calm you down a bit: medical waste is only about 1% of all plastic waste in Germany. So it can't be much more wherever you live. You should never feel bad about that! Your health should be the most important thing to you.
Same here. But remember your health should come first. Remember theres a reason medical stuff comes in plastic, look up medical things from 30s or earlier. You'll notice death rates were higher, it's a pain for it to come in plastic but its low cost and makes sure the product isn't tampered with!
It is a really small thing in the scheme of things but when I have to go get my blood drawn..several times a year....I actually save the 'plastic/rubber' band that they use at the top of my arm. I usually have to watch them very carefully so I can 'catch' them before they automatically go to throw it out. So far, I've been able to keep it and reuse it. I know it's really small but there is so much I CAN'T do about my medical waste , I have to appreciate when I can do 'anything' no matter how small. As well, when I go to my chiropractor weekly, he has a roll of paper on the table that he changes for each patient where we put our face down on the table....I bring my own 'hankie' and put it over the paper and then he doesn't have to change the paper. Again, very small, but I feel good doing all I can. There is one other lady that does it too...still waiting for it to really become the new normal in the office...
Something no one seems to talk about, being on a zero waist quest myself: Where does your product come from!? I mean you can use a bamboo toothbrush but if it still gets shipped from China what the hell are we doing?!? Sorry if I sound too cynical but it helps me to not only look at the end product as a sustainable option but I really believe we can reduce our carbon footprint so to speak by also looking at its origins.
I think the question is, if both of your options for a tooth brush are coming from China, why not choose bamboo? These are incredibly difficult choices to weigh and need an entire life cycle analysis to answer those questions. Which plenty of people study professionally all their life and still don’t have a definitive answer. It’s very complicated and literally impossible for an average individual to calculate. So I assume that’s why not many people talk about it.
I totally agree! I’ve realised that in some cases it is better to use a locally made option even if it is in more plastic. Plastic is nasty but not as nasty as the CO2 involved in shipping things from overseas. Waste isn’t killing us and our earth as quickly as climate change.
Medical stuff really needs to be in plastic to stay sterile. Paper is too porous to be used if the area needs to be sterile. I use support bandages daily, and they come in plastic. There isn't an alternative for me that I can use. They can't be reused either due to their nature, so they need to be binned. I'm not going to feel guilty about something I can't avoid, unless I have my leg amputated. But that's a little drastic.
Medical supplies is a totally acceptable use for plastic. The bandaids she was talking about, if you buy standard bandaids they still come wrapped in paper but the bandage itself is plastic. These are obviously not the same kind you need.
@@Shadeadder currently they're not good enough to keep stuff sterile, they're still porous. As far as I'm aware they're not completely sterile when they're made either. One day they might be, but that's not today.
In Germany we have "einhorn condoms" a vegan condom brand that translates to unicorn and I think they're also doing a very good job of supplying sustainable condoms 😬
I didn't know we had a german brand too, I only knew of the swiss company that produces "verhüterli" (for non-german speakers: wordplay with the german words for contraception and hat. Spelled in swiss german. just lovely.)
Jule Caesara The packaging of the Einhorn tampons says „produced in Slovenia, the only country with love in its name“. I have to smile everytime I read that. :)
@@Ninshae Omg I'm from Slovenia and I had no idea that these exist, even less that that they were produced here! Thank you so much for sharing the info, everyone
Finally something newer than all the basics and even some of the advanced ones out there still aren't all that advanced...Thank you for doing this one! Especially more about climate change, since half the part about going zero waste is about making a difference in our environment overall. Edit: the reusable water balloons work well, I used some blanket yarn, it's lightweight but wicked warm, and they crochet up pretty quickly I think. Also about the bandaids, we're more so trying to find ones that are dark enough for my boyfriend, as Madison can definitely relate to. We did see the patch ones recently when searching for darker skin tone bandaids. More so THANK YOU for promoting safe sex to others! Since that in itself makes a bigger impact on people overall, The Fairly Local Vegan has also mentioned that not too long ago, which I cannot praise both of you enough for!
Maybe it's easier to put on just a tiny amount of oil with a spray? but I don't really know, I never tried sprays, I simply drip some oil on a pan from the bottle.
I don't know for every one, but I use PAM when making cakes and breaded casseroles. I suppose I could rub butter or oil around but that seems a lot messier than I want to do.
We only but huge bulk bottles of oil so the spray is definitely more convenient and comfortable then lifting several pounds of oil to try and gently pour a small amount. It’s not a necessity but it is useful
We bought the reusable water balloons for my daughter’s birthday party this summer. Such a great investment my kids played with them all summer and right now they are dried and stored until next summer! They held up well and look like they will last a long time! Easy to use and clean! 🧡 I wholeheartedly recommend them for summer fun!
I used to use condoms with my partner, and once we got tested and knew we'd be long-term, I got an IUD! No babies for us and reducing plastic waste! But of course, condoms are essential to protect from STIs if you have multiple/new partners!
@@bananapancake9223 well not all STIs are only sex related. You can catch an STIs in many ways!!!! Soooo it's more possible to get one from a not properly washed towel or clothes than your partner cheating...
@@lilituprincess STI literally Sexually Transmitted Infections, what you may mean is a UTI, a urinary tract infection? Please correct me if I am not getting what you say here
I'm the person who asked about condoms. I was just asking a question 😭 I'm not zero waste but I am trying to learn. And you were my resource for that. I've stoped eating meat every day and stopped buying massive amounts of make up because I learned from you how bad it was. If anyone knew about a better alternative it was probably you.
Don´t feel bad about it. I think it was a totally legit question. There are for sure other people out there who didn´t dare to ask. Or never thought about it in the first place! So: well done :)
Please don't feel bad or self-conscious about that. It was a legit question that only YOU had the courage to ask! I'm sure she didn't mean to shame you, just keep up the good work! 😊
I've also considered my contraceptive waste and wondered if condoms were a bad idea. After some consideration I've decided that they are the best alternative for me currently, but I'm also super excited to learn about the ones she suggested, and she wouldn't have mentioned it if it weren't for you! While she was was talking about you in the video I literally thought "Thank goodness someone asked" and I'm sure I'm not alone, so please feel proud and not embarrassed that you were able to influence so many people with your question : )
If you’re in a monagamous relationship, you can consider a diaphragm, but it will not protect you from stds. It’s a barrier form of birth control that is generally used with spermicidal lube, so I’m unsure of the effectiveness without the use of spermicidal lube. I’m going to use mine without spermicidal lube as a backup method while I’m on the patch for the week you have your regular cycle. You can also look into period tracking apps which can tell you the times of the month you’re most likely to become pregnant and avoid having sex at those times altogether. I would highly recommend the use of condoms though, as std rates skyrocket to outbreak levels. Get tested regularly, because you never know. Your partner could unknowingly be carrying something and never exhibit any symptoms. Women get the short end of the stick when it comes to stds as they are much more likely to experience symptoms when infected with an std. which could mean earlier detection and thus treatment, but not all stds are curable yet, and you don’t want to be stuck with something for life!
THANK YOU, I also get frustrated when I’m trying to find more “advanced” swaps and they are so few and far between. I didn’t know that charcoal could be boiled and reused, so that’s awesome! And I’ll definitely pick up that lint roller for my brother, he goes through a lot of them that it’ll be super handy! Another swap I have never seen anyone talk about is air filters. We have a reusable air filter that was just clean out with our hose every month or so instead of continually buying new air filters for our house. It is made of plastic, but it’s worked well for us over the last year or so that we have had it and in that time we would have sent so many more to the landfill if we had traditional air filters. Definitely worth checking into!
i have an air filter that i need to replace. how exactly do you clean yours? and does it still work like new after you clean it? i’ve only replaced the filter once and i felt really bad about it but i also need it bc i get bad allergies but i don’t want to be creating more waste and having to spend almost $30 on a new one :(
Lu Lu hey! Ours we are able to clean by just rinsing it off with our hose. We got it at either Home Depot or Lowe’s and it’s been really great! I have allergies too so I good filter makes a big different (especially if you have a bunch pf animals like me lol) I don’t remember exactly how much it was (definitely not more than $30) but it has more than paid for itself.
@@Selena8461 Depending on how much you need it, and what you need it for. If you actually need it to catch smoke and pollens, you may need to have a micron level filter like a hepa filter which is not washable. (specifically because water destroys the interlacing layers, people think they can wash them, because intuitively it seems like it should be possible, but after washing at best they can catch dust as well as fabric-- which is not well-- the way they're made to catch small particles is a lattice and that gets compressed and wrecked by water. I've never seen/found a reusable filter which has the same ability to catch really small particles, but I would love one to be made.) However, you can things that have hepa filters but also a pre-filter mesh, or which use a very large filter, or some additional measures, so that you don't have to replace the un-washable filter as often. Also, if you only need it to catch dust, or cat dander, which are much bigger particles than something like smoke, then you could get one of the washable/reusable ones because they should do that job alright. :) Here's a video about testing air purifiers, and it has probably more than you want to know about air purifiers XD th-cam.com/video/pUznY9-opbk/w-d-xo.html
Some more info about charcoal www.thoughtco.com/how-does-activated-charcoal-work-604294 It doesn't filter out everything, I mean I wouldn't use it to filter Flint tap water.
Finally someone said it! I have been wondering when someone in the zero waste community was going to talk about condom use and how it isn’t very zero waste friendly. And thanks, Shelby for actually breaking down the fact that it takes more resources to sustain a life than it would be to “properly dispose” the condom. Perfect analysis! It’s also going to take more resources to clear up any infection or virus that could result in unsafe sex (unfortunately infections are contagious while diseases can be either contagious or non contagious).. I think this can also be a time for more companies to come up with more cost efficient solutions for safer sex practices to allow ALL adults access to those resources regardless of socioeconomic status. Again, thank you Shelby for sharing these swaps!💕
@@billiebluesheepie2907 oh, slutshaming, that's nice 🙄 And, you know, some people are polyamorous. That said, not "sleeping around" doesn't help if your partner isn't faithful. The point is, safe sex is important, more important than worrying about condoms not being zero waste.
Charlotta - there’s no such thing as ‘safe sex’ - you can make your sex sessions safer, but there’s always some risk involved. Sorry if I’m coming across as judgemental - I’m not trying to - I’ve been a sexual health worker for over a decade and some people, especially younger, and older people who have just started to date again following a bereavement, divorce or boredom, have unrealistic opinions about ‘safe sex’. I would definitely recommend condoms to people, I’ve given out hundreds, maybe thousands. Definitely don’t re-use them either :) The female version of condom is called a femidom (in the UK) and can be kept in place for up to 12 hours as long as both rings stay in place, so might cut down on condom use, they’re not as safe as a male version condom, but are great for loving couples with a latex allergy. (I’ve used condoms to cover finger injuries whilst out canoeing and kayaking too!)
@@crybabywalker03 do you think they will help with cloudy/ hard water? We had to use a brita filter for the sink and then use that water in a brita pitcher. So it's double filtered. Our water is gross.
@@jesseharmes6797 It should do, you can also get filters that have crystals and stones in them that fit over the shower and taps that will also filter the water
I've also seen the 'swap' of using sponges instead (but of course that isn't necessarily the best either -- even though less tiny pieces!) I like the idea of crocheted ones!
Shelbi, I have two cats and would love to see a more environmentally friendly way of owning cats but not too pricy. Changing the litter box, food, etc, you get it.
Letting cats outside is unfortunately extremely anti ecofriendly. Look up the studies on how much wildlife cats straight up murder! Also their waste can be toxic when left in food gardens, and children's sandboxes, etc. I love my cats, but they're indoor-only. They never try to escape and they are perfectly content. And they live so much longer because they aren't eaten or hit by cars. I use a natural, non clay based litter (world's best cat litter brand) but there's also other corn, pine, and paper-based products which are good too. As for food, cats are obligate carnivores, which means they /must/ eat a carnivorous diet. They cannot be fed a vegan diet like dogs can tolerate. You can either go with a raw-meat diet and buy meats from sources you trust to be ethical (as much as that's possible) or you can try to do research on the best food brands. The grain-free diets tend to be more transparent about their practices. My cat is over 20 years old and is on a medical diet now, but he used to be on raw meat/grain free food for many years.
a ghost I do agree with you completely, though sadly my whole family is from Bosnia and they’ve got strays everywhere, it really sucks. This is a big issue throughout most poorer countries in Europe. I don’t really see the issue in the US. I wish all these animals got loving owners and peaceful homes. Third world countries also have this stray issue, but we shouldn’t have to dictate what animal goes inside or outside just because humans are very domesticated - indoor creatures. It’s not always possible to put a pet indoors but letting them go outside & roam around seems like the most natural option. I know of cats who thrive when they’re outside/ can’t wait to run out the door. We as humans used to go outside too instead of go on a big slab of ceramic or plastic that goes into our water system with all this other waste 😂 Indoor Plumbing is great.
When I (briefly, awkwardly because I am a wee bit shy) approached you at my work in Vancouver, I mentioned this was the kind of content that really sets you apart. Thank you for continuing to provide more than just platitudes on this topic. You make really fantastic content, Shelby.
I’ve been using a misto since I was in elementary school! I’m 28 now. My dad bought one for the kitchen long ago, and I love it so much that I have one in my own kitchen now
Just ordered the Misto spray bottle!! I’m slowly using things up and replacing them with low waste swaps. Just about out of my current oil spray so this video came just in time for my next swap!
my mum has a similar thing for lint that sort of looks like a brush, it has the same red fabric going on, on both sides! it works wonders, but I don't think you can buy it anymore, she's had it since I was a baby! this is a great solution!
Same! I grew up with one in the house so assumed that's what people used. I work at a thrift store and see them come through every so often. Check there to find them if not at the store!
Thank you so much for mentioning the pet hair remover! I was just talking to my mum yesterday about needing one because we have two cats who shed like no one’s business and I am tired of lint rollers
Before buying something new, try putting on a rubber dishwashing glove, dampening it and rubbing it over the upholstery. For most fabric surfaces, that will work like a charm and it's one less thing to buy/produce/ship.
Seriously this is one of the most helpful videos on zero waste I’ve heard in a while. Just because I’ve heard several things repeated (which is fine and still educational). But super grateful you touched on these!
Is there a glass version that you can pop the charcoal into? I’ve two Brita filters now that I’ve had for years and use daily. I’d opt for glass and charcoal chunks!
Selestine Overholser or is there a way to use those pitchers with charcoal? I also have a big Brita filter because we go through a lot of it at once so a small bottle wouldn’t work for us. So if you find any ideas please share 🙏
Thank you for the Chacoal stick - i'll be using it for my plants too! PLEASE keep this coming!!! I think people are too afraid to talk about swaps 'beyond the straw' and I'm so happy to hear you're doing it. I actually have the exact same fridge as you and would love to know which internal filter you use. I live in a city with hard water so a filter is a must
I've got to look up the science on this one... it was my understanding that water has to be forced thru the charcoal to filter out impurities. I don't think placing charcoal in water will extract impurities from the water... let me know if you have a scientific source to support this. Thx
Bsar Cich I’m a chemical engineering student, and based on what I know about separation principles, I think you’re right. impurities are removed through contact with the charcoal, so while some may be removed just by sitting, not all will.
OMG I have had a Misto for years and I never thought about it from a low-impact lifestyle perspective! I bought it when I started to try to eat healthier. haha! It's an amazing product!
I don't comment much, but you're the first low waste/sustainable youtuber I discovered, and you taught me what exactly what this lifestyle is all about!! You opened my eyes and made me realize certain things I was doing weren't actually sustainable (such as supporting greenwashing brands, recycling instead of reducing first, etc.). It's only been a couple months, but you've taught me so much. I'm slowly making swaps in my life as I use up what I currently have, and not only that, I've been making healthier choices that aren't just better for the environment, but for my body, too. For example, I used to be super into coloring my hair crazy colors, but you opened my eyes to how harmful it is to our water (and it can be super wasteful) and our bodies. This was definitely hard to come to terms with for me because I'm a cosmetologist, but ultimately, it just doesn't matter to me anymore. There are so many other *eco-friendly* ways to express myself! I also started coloring my hair with henna just so I could still have a little red in my hair. ^^ but yeah lol! I'm just so grateful for everything you put out! I could go on and on lol but I'll stop there haha. I just want you to know inspire me so much, Shelbi 😭😭💖 and so so many others!! THANK YOU for all you do!
Let me tell you that you're the most coherent person I ever followed concerning about living in a sustainable life. I'm sooooooo happy I found your channel! Thanks a lot for everything. Hugs from South America 🤗🤗
I make those reusable water balloons! They are made of yarn! My son LOVES THEM. Weve had ours for 2 summers and they are so nice. No clean up, no waste. You just wash them so they dont get funky. (:
I have a Misto and used it for soling that I broke it. I am definitely going to get a new one. It is not only good for the environment but saves you money... which is my jam! Lol
Yes, basically, but you need to remember that anything we consume online needs a server running somewhere in the worls, which uses energy. And: we dont usually know how that energy is produced...
There are so many youtube channels out there about zero waste lifestyle, but you are so unique 'cause your content is so well researched. I love this channel! ❤
We had one of those pump oil sprayers like over a decade ago. We used it like crazy, but after about a year, it just quit working. So now I just use my hand to spread oil in a pan lol.
thank you so much for talking about the reusable aerosol. i recently considered swatching to spray oils for cooking but was concerned about the fact that aerosols are hard to recycle (as far as i know) and didn't want to create more waste as is. i only recently started my low/zero waste journey and am still figuring things out but your videos have been a huge help so far and learning that options like this exist besides the "basic" swaps was really great! so thank you for your hard work, keep it up. looking forward to more tips from you in the future :)
I'm trying to transition to zero waste. Thought that would be easier than going all in right from the start. I have been making a decent amount of waste lately, but I haven't bought the things that are causing it. When my grandmother died I took most of the food in the house, which included a lot of individually packaged items. I stopped buying single serving packaging (got a reusable Keurig cup for example). I've also started boiling veggie scraps for stock before composting them. I also don't plan to buy a new car ever. To have one that looks "fancy" after I graduate I'm remodeling an antique muscle car with a fuel efficient engine. This way I can reduce the amount of vehicle waste (those cars are huge), while driving something cool.
Thank you Shelbi! I've been after one of those sprays for oil for ages as my flatmate uses them and it bugs me. I never could find them anywhere. Also handkerchiefs! We used to use them all the time when I was a kid. It was even a required pocket item when I was in the Brownies! We need to bring these back. I've lost a few of mine lately and you have no idea how hard it is to find them to replace.I know some might find it gross to talk about but yeah we really need to stop using disposable tissue products..
For finding handkerchiefs, I find going to yard sales, flea markets, and resale shops are handy. You could also find an old stained up cloth something from one of the sales/shops and cut them up, definitely not as pretty, but it works.
I work at Tuesday Morning and we sell handkerchiefs. And they are very reasonably priced. They are even monogrammed. If you don't live in the U.S. they also have them at Walmart and they're only a few dollars for a pack.
You can buy hankies on Amazon. Possibly earth hero (havent checked.) But I know amazon has some really nice ones that are pretty and soft (I dont lile ones that my nose is rubbed raw). I would check earth hero first since shipping is more ecofriendly but if nothing else standard shipping with a large amazon order may help (large meaning wait till you need several things instead of 1 at a time)
I was walking downtown with a young scout friend near the elections, because we were going to attend a climate demonstration, when a green party member, noticing our uniforms, came to us to promote his friend's campaign, with paper napkins... 😅😂 We refused the napkins kindly. My friend was like, "That isn't very environmentally friendly, is it?" Yeah.
This is the best most perfectly timed video ever! Thank you so much! I'm fairly new to the zero waste community, but as you said, I'm good on the beginners/ basics but didn't know how to get any farther! I'm literally about to move from a neighborhood with extremely good tap water (basically purchased bottled water shipped in since this neighborhood has more money) to one with questionable quality. I wasn't looking forward to buying filters for the constant cost and waste but wasn't sure what else to do. This is perfect! I'm so grateful!
I've recently come across the "Rocketbook" for anyone in or going back to school! It's not along the lines of what you've mentioned in your video here, but it is a way to minimize paper waste by way of digitizing notes in a way that is eco-friendly :) These are amazing suggestions by the way!
I’m a biology major and one of my required classes is called journal club where we read articles on a specific topic and this semesters topic is climate change! It’s difficult but also super clarifying. Highly recommend the most recent IPCC report “Summary for Policy Makers” is a dumbed down well research report on the current state
It's easier to cover the pan evenly with a spray and you won't have an oil puddle in your pan from adding to much. It's also less of a mess to deal with as you won't need to spread it out with a towel or soak up excess oil or get oil all over your hands.
I've been binging your videos this week and this might be my favorite one, simply because I've never heard of some of these! The charcoal instead of the Britta is such a great swap, one I'll be making very shortly! Thanks for the great ideas, as always ❤️
Do not be upset about medical waste. As someone with a chronic Illness this is something that was hard for me but i need the medication and you guys (Who are straight) need condoms or birth control to stop baby so it’s not something to not use because you will get a baby
Oh hey, we have a misto thing! We've never ever used spray oil so it wasn't really a swap, it was just that my mom wanted to have something to be able to spray thinner layers of oil rather than pouring that generally uses more oil. Oh hey, we also have a reusable lint roller! 😂 Sort of a swap, we have one that's for floors and one for regular stuff. Not that we really used a ton of lint rollers in the first place but we used some. We're not really an eco aware family because of money and barriers, these were just things we got to save money in the long run and have options 😅
I've never left a comment on any youtube video so here goes my comment. I'm 65 and I'm so glad to see your generation more concerned with the environment than we were. It's more important now than ever! Keep up the good work! I watch your videos All the time. Thanks😊
Can you talk about “time of the month” life style changes? And do more of these.... also reusable paper towels... what do you do with the bacon strips with the grease??
I made a moonpad swap about 5 months ago and I haven't looked back! They can be a little pricey (I could only buy one or two a month till I had enough) but they're great!
Daniela, that’s true however it’s not practical for my lifestyle. I want to learn to be more investmently friendly and maybe reduce my meat intake But not toss it out in all. I want to learn more about cooking with non paper towels. I have also just had a baby and do part time cloth diapers working towards full time.
I'm so glad you mentioned the charcoal water filter stick. I'm running low on the ones I bought before I started my journey, and I was about to buy more, but thought "Surely there's a low-waste alternative" and then you made this video! So helpful.
Thank you for this! I’m tired of seeing the basics over and over. The pet fur roller is going to be life changing. I’ve been picking it off by hand for 2 years because I didn’t want to get the wasteful lint rollers. 😂
You can also try getting rubber gloves you own (if you do already) wet and running your hand across the surface. It works on a lot of things. Good luck
I just ordered some patch bandaids a few days ago! Love that they’re compostable and better for our environment :) Also onya has some great products for zero waste grocery shopping that I LOVE
These are great - more videos about alternative swaps mich appreciated here! Any chance you could check out ASOS' sustainability practices? (They have a "responsible edit" very curious if legit
Your videos are the first zero waste I've watched, not even sure how they got on my feed. I just made my first swap from paper towels to hand towels. Thank you!
I am in a crotchet/ knit group on Facebook, and a person mentioned the reusable balloons. They used thick chunky yarn to make it. I don't remember what material but from the comments I was reading seemed a lot of fun and easy to make. The yarn absorbs the water so you can then throw it
I got my misto because of you from many videos ago! ❤️ great swap! I love the patch band aids! The kids one have pandas on them 😂 my boys love them & I have been seen rocking the kid panda band aid when I’ve ran out of the adult ones 😂😂
I had never thought about water filters, so thanks for sharing about charcoal! I teach first aid classes and I've been frustrated about the lack of eco-friendly first aid kits for a while- I'm excited for you to make that video. Medical supplies are a huge source of waste, and while of course they are life saving and neccessary, I think we can do a lot better at making biodegradable, more thoughtful supplies.
I just wanna say I love your videos. I think you explain everything really clearly and you helped me understand so many things about how to take care about our environment :)
They also make reusable lint rollers for people that need to use them on their clothes! They look like a normal lint roller but the roller part is sticky and can we rinsed off to reuse it
I really enjoyed this! Please, if there are more interesting swaps we can make besides the typical things, make more of these because I'd love to know as much as possible and I love your videos! 💖
Also I know that there are multiple brands of vegan condoms on the market, but I'm not sure about their environmental impact. Absolutely agree that using ANY condom is better than using no condom, where safer sex concerns apply.
I had NO idea that a misto existed. Thank you for that. I recently learned about the charcoal sticks from Katherine Kellogg's book. I switched and loved it. This is the first time I have EVER seen it mentioned it a video. Hopefully it encourages more people to make the switch. I mentioned lint rollers in one of my not so great quality videos, but I have seen a handful of people mention them since then. I actually think I like your lint roller better. It looks so much easier to clean! I can't wait to see some of your next videos going beyond zero waste and addressing climate change as a whole.
I’m really glad you decided to make this zero waste content. I’ve been binging as of late and everyone’s content seems to piggyback off each other’s in what zero waste swaps they mention. I did see a blog post the other day where instead of floss someone used a cordless water flosser in the shower and a brush instead loofah.
thank you for the different swaps. I have been trying to convert things in my home as they run out. The water filter is going to be my next swap and the bandaid. With me having kids we go through a ton! Keep bringing on the unmentioned swaps! Great work!
This was such a great video!!! I had never heard of any of these and I'm definitely going to check some of them out!! I watch these zero waste videos all the time and it's normally the same tips over and over again. THANK YOU!!
Tap water often contains salts and metals, sometimes they're just naturally occurring in the ground water source and others they're added to condition the water. These can build up in the soil over time and when the concentration gets high enough start burning the roots of the plants preventing them from absorbing water properly. If your potted plants need more nutrients it's best to use a proper fertilizer. You could even make your own for some serious zero waste.
Thank you for linking the filters! I knew about them from one of your old videos and tried to find them but they were like $30 each for a small piece.. these are more in my price range. Also, I found a second hand misto last month at a yard sale. Absolutely love it! Great recommendation.
I don't use any of the wasteful things you mentioned here :D I don't even own a first aid kit... And there are some good eco-friendly condoms here in germany. And we don't ever use cooking sprays. I never understood these
@@sharoncox1734 Im not the OP. But Ive never cut myself while chopping my food. I think its pretty normal for most people to not have a need for bandaids on a regular basis.
@Savannah Leslie I don't cut myself regularly either, but minor accidents do happen about once a year in my house. People fall on roofing iron, get nasty splinters, get infected insect bites, sprain joints, get blisters as big as cucumber slices, smash plates on themselves while drunk, get glass in their feet, cut their heads open on cupboard doors, go a bit too far with the craft knife, etc etc.
@@sharoncox1734 Im saying I dont have any accidents or need for bandaids on a regular basis. So maybe the OP is more like me and less like you. Theres no need for bandaids because there isnt really ever a time they use them. I was honestly a child the last time I actually needed one, or anything from a medkit.
I secretly love the swap videos as that is what got me started last year. I have 2 more not commonly mentioned swaps. A silicon baking mat, replaces foil or baking paper and makes washing up a breeze. A reusable sturdy liquids bag for the airport. Placing aside the fact that flying isn’t environmentally friendly, it really saddens me to see travellers use a new plastic bag every time they fly and throw it away after use.
As a medical zero waste alternative I use reusable bandages. They never directly touch a wound so it is no problem if they are not sterile. If you ned it for a wound just use a sterile compress and fix it with the washable bandage. And if it's just a sprain and the bandage is for support there is no need fpór a sterile bandage. My famliy uses them as long as i can remember.

Talking about the pet hair rollers, these things were used before the sticky rollers appeared in market, I have one in my house, it's like 15 years old, people switched to the sticky ones, bcuz they are easier and faster to use
thank you for all the wonderful and useful ideas
I have one I never hear mentioned... it’s kinda random but whenever I use it I think about how it’s zero waste and no one mentions them. Crystal glass nail file! 🤷🏻♀️😂 I’ve had one for years now and never ever have to buy disposable nail files and their plastic packaging ever again. A crystal glass nail file is also better for your nails. It doesn’t rip your nail up the way a normal file does. They last forever and never dull. You just rinse it under water when it gets too dusty and it’s like brand new again!
I have never heard of it. Wow, thank you for sharing
@Ashley Lawrence They're so great! i "stole" my mums glass file about 5-6 years ago and it's still going strong
I didn’t know about the rinsing thing. I definitely did not step on mine and break it at all lmao. But it still works haha
melinda martinez no problem!
Haha thought that too
Exactely my thoughts!
Hi there heavily used to australia
As an American, I agree with you. I think it's purely for the sake of ease.
I have seen and bought cooking oil in a can up here in finland, but, it was such a huge waste of space and time 🤣
I have my old old old old silicon brush that works like a charm, and i oil my things that need oiling with it. No need for spraycans in the kitchen
can you do a “what i still waste” video??? i know you don’t do a trash jar thing and i’m curious how much trash you produce even with all of your zero waste methods bc ✨nobody’s perfect✨
Omg yes we need that vid!
I agree! Just to show what you struggle with to lessen the guilt we all have lmao

medical waste is such a pain! It's the largest source of plastic in my life but there's nothing i can do about it :(
N S totally agree. And if medical waste was the only waste in the world, waste would not be a problem.
3:46 is where the swaps actually start
seriously she needs to pin this tip to the top
Exactly. Like vegans who buy fancy plant based foods made from ingredients imported from all over the world
Not at all, I don't buy from China at all for various reasons, so the commenter to your post provided someone in NY who ships in the US
I was so excited to find affordable bamboo toothbrushes at Marshall’s... but didn’t buy because they were entirely packaged in plastic 🤦🏻♀️
Strange Kat high risk people should obviously not change medical stuff but the average Joe who gets a paper cut once a year could make the switch
There are biodegradable clear plastics. Hopefully some day the major medical industries can use those for keeping supplies sterile
@@Shadeadder currently they're not good enough to keep stuff sterile, they're still porous. As far as I'm aware they're not completely sterile when they're made either. One day they might be, but that's not today.
@@strangekat2840 Oh that's too bad. Hopefully future development can make that happen!
In Germany we have "einhorn condoms" a vegan condom brand that translates to unicorn and I think they're also doing a very good job of supplying sustainable condoms 😬

sustain condoms in the United States!
Why do you need an aerosol can at all? Just use the oil/butter. Works just as well.
Maybe it's easier to put on just a tiny amount of oil with a spray? but I don't really know, I never tried sprays, I simply drip some oil on a pan from the bottle.
I agree. Seems unnecessary. Maybe some people need that swap to feel more “normal?”
I don't know for every one, but I use PAM when making cakes and breaded casseroles. I suppose I could rub butter or oil around but that seems a lot messier than I want to do.
Personal preference. I find the spray easier myself

Maybe try to find biodegradable condoms?
Definitely worth checking into!
i have an air filter that i need to replace. how exactly do you clean yours? and does it still work like new after you clean it? i’ve only replaced the filter once and i felt really bad about it but i also need it bc i get bad allergies but i don’t want to be creating more waste and having to spend almost $30 on a new one :(
they make reusable engine filters as well. my van had one
Lu Lu hey! Ours we are able to clean by just rinsing it off with our hose. We got it at either Home Depot or Lowe’s and it’s been really great! I have allergies too so I good filter makes a big different (especially if you have a bunch pf animals like me lol)
I don’t remember exactly how much it was (definitely not more than $30) but it has more than paid for itself.
I've never seen/found a reusable filter which has the same ability to catch really small particles, but I would love one to be made.)
However, you can things that have hepa filters but also a pre-filter mesh, or which use a very large filter, or some additional measures, so that you don't have to replace the un-washable filter as often.
Also, if you only need it to catch dust, or cat dander, which are much bigger particles than something like smoke, then you could get one of the washable/reusable ones because they should do that job alright. :)

You can swap to a diaphragm that needs to be the right size for the woman who’s wearing it, then it can be washed between uses and can last for years.
@@billiebluesheepie2907 that's good for contraception, but it won't protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

The female version of condom is called a femidom (in the UK) and can be kept in place for up to 12 hours as long as both rings stay in place, so might cut down on condom use, they’re not as safe as a male version condom, but are great for loving couples with a latex allergy.

Or anything other than tp and bodily waste. Nothing that says flushable on it is actually flushable.
It does happen. Some people that just doesn't feel safe to throw it in the garbage, because this way it could be seen by their parents.

Shelbi, I have two cats and would love to see a more environmentally friendly way of owning cats but not too pricy. Changing the litter box, food, etc, you get it.
Vasikins I second this! 😻😻
teach them to go outside ?
I agree. Advice for pet owners in general.

I do agree with you completely, though sadly my whole family is from Bosnia and they’ve got strays everywhere, it really sucks.
I must say, spray oil is such a wierd concept.

my mum has a similar thing for lint that sort of looks like a brush, it has the same red fabric going on, on both sides! it works wonders, but I don't think you can buy it anymore, she's had it since I was a baby! this is a great solution!
Same! I grew up with one in the house so assumed that's what people used. I work at a thrift store and see them come through every so often. Check there to find them if not at the store!
I got one off amazon
The reusable ones with fabric are really common in Germany from what I've seen. I think I also saw them in HEMA which is a Dutch store I think.
They sell them at Dollar Tree!
lint wizard is a good brand too if you can find it
Thank you so much for mentioning the pet hair remover!
My mom had the pampered chef version of the "misto" when I was a kid. I got my misto on Amazon a while back bc I remembered hers. I love it.

My husband found the reusable "spray can" as a swap, and I was SO PROUD OF HIM!
The only swap I already knew about was the zero waste bandaids! I'm so appreciative to you for these more advanced swaps though. ❤️
YES!!! I'm constantly on the hunt for "advanced" zero waste videos! I'd love more of these!
That charcoal stick is the best thing I've ever learned about.. Thank you!
Lol
Aerosol cans are steel and when you compress the contents of the misto, you are compressing the air inside, I believe. Great video!
Actually, audiobooks and ebooks are a zero waste swap themselves, aren't they?
Yes, basically, but you need to remember that anything we consume online needs a server running somewhere in the worls, which uses energy. And: we dont usually know how that energy is produced...
@spoontacular ... or minimize it to a good balance between educating myself and watching things with only half an eye.
I appreciate your rawness! I’ve found some really helpful tips on your videos. Love the quote you use. Thanks for what you do!
My mom looves hankies. She usually finds them at antique stores.
Highly recommend the most recent IPCC report “Summary for Policy Makers” is a dumbed down well research report on the current state
I like the idea of the video: advanced zero waste swaps. But, why do we need to spray oil anyway?!?!
It's better than poor oil I think. Like the saying "just a dab will do ya". Spray bottle does that.
No idea.. I usually just pour mine into the pan and lather everything with my fingers....
It's easier to cover the pan evenly with a spray and you won't have an oil puddle in your pan from adding to much. It's also less of a mess to deal with as you won't need to spread it out with a towel or soak up excess oil or get oil all over your hands.
And water filters 😂 - if u r worried jsut boil it or get a filter jug
I've been binging your videos this week and this might be my favorite one, simply because I've never heard of some of these! The charcoal instead of the Britta is such a great swap, one I'll be making very shortly! Thanks for the great ideas, as always ❤️
I prefer aerosol deodorants, and I imagine that misto would work if I found a recipe
Tell us if you do find a recipe!
If it does not have to be aerosol but just sprays then there are plenty diy on the web.
That's a really good idea
Do not be upset about medical waste. As someone with a chronic Illness this is something that was hard for me but i need the medication and you guys (Who are straight) need condoms or birth control to stop baby so it’s not something to not use because you will get a baby
other individuals need to use safe sex too. no one wants Stds on genitals and in their throats.
Great video! I appreciated the emphasis on focusing on not only the swaps, but the bigger issues. Really love your approach. Thank you! Big fan!
I bought reusable water baloons for my children's stockings this year! Can't wait to try them :)
Eating meat isn't very sustainable to begin with
She has done a video on that in the past if you search for it. But she does do updates so maybe she will do a newer one soon :)
Daniela, that’s true however it’s not practical for my lifestyle. I want to learn to be more investmently friendly and maybe reduce my meat intake
But not toss it out in all. I want to learn more about cooking with non paper towels. I have also just had a baby and do part time cloth diapers working towards full time.
@@PandaD2 ive been thinking about getting one!! I just had a baby so haven't started again but im trying to plan ahead.
ASOS is cheap fast fashion :( if they're trying to do some kind of sustainability slant all of a sudden it's definitely greenwashing :(
Green washing
Your videos are the first zero waste I've watched, not even sure how they got on my feed. I just made my first swap from paper towels to hand towels. Thank you!
BRB while I immediately purchase a Misto cause wow why haven't I heard about this before?! Life changinggggg!
I am in a crotchet/ knit group on Facebook, and a person mentioned the reusable balloons. They used thick chunky yarn to make it. I don't remember what material but from the comments I was reading seemed a lot of fun and easy to make. The yarn absorbs the water so you can then throw it
I moved to a different country and my cat is finally coming home today! Might want that lint roller in my future. :)
Thanks so much, Shelbi for the Brita swap! I had never heard of it! Definitely going to try it out!
I wasn't expecting sex ed with Shelbi but so glad you said it! Haha
I just wanna say I love your videos. I think you explain everything really clearly and you helped me understand so many things about how to take care about our environment :)
I’ve never heard of any of those things until now. U should also do a video on kitchen cookware.
Best swaps so far. I'm really excited to try the lint roller, the mister, and the bandaids! Thank you for all you do!
Thank you for advocating safer sex practices
The pet hair roller - does it also work for human hair on clothes? 😂
Yes
I’m really glad you decided to make this zero waste content. I’ve been binging as of late and everyone’s content seems to piggyback off each other’s in what zero waste swaps they mention.
I did see a blog post the other day where instead of floss someone used a cordless water flosser in the shower and a brush instead loofah.
My 4 year old loves loves loves his reusable water balloons!!
thank you for the different swaps. I have been trying to convert things in my home as they run out.
The water filter is going to be my next swap and the bandaid. With me having kids we go through a ton! Keep bringing on the unmentioned swaps! Great work!
100% bought a misto before the video was over.
This was such a great video!!! I had never heard of any of these and I'm definitely going to check some of them out!! I watch these zero waste videos all the time and it's normally the same tips over and over again. THANK YOU!!
You need to give plants straight up tap water. They need those minerals. Or, so I've heard.
They have had colorful sponges for years you can reuse as water balloons
I LOVE these!! Thanks for keeping your eyes open for these less obvious swaps!
I don't use any of the wasteful things you mentioned here :D I don't even own a first aid kit... And there are some good eco-friendly condoms here in germany. And we don't ever use cooking sprays. I never understood these
Sóla's Bastelwelt I only use the spray when I bake so my cupcakes don’t stick
What do you do if you cut yourself chopping veggies for dinner after the doctor has closed for the day?
Can you use your silicone baking mat for covering glass pans while baking? I use aluminum foil when baking chicken breasts to keep the moisture in.
All I could think of throughout the video was: Just rink of how much money I would save if I went low waste.
I save $900 per year and that's not even with diapers and wipes factored in.
