There was a “tiki bar” on one of the piers in Galveston that dated from the post-Prohibition era and was very popular with the members of the Rat Pack. They had signed photos and photos taken in the bar of members of the Pack on the walls, both together and when they’d visited separately. I was fortunate enough to go there in 2005, shortly after my dad and stepmom moved down there. It was an interesting slice of “Americana”. Sadly the entire pier was destroyed in 2008 by Hurricane Ike and all of that memorabilia was lost to the Gulf of Mexico.
I really didn’t know all that about Sammy..damn. The blatant racism, threats ..i remember he was no hero in the young black community back in the 60s,especially after the picture of him hugging Nixon was released..but i remember seeing him on broadway in golden boy..his presence onstage always stayed with..
I'm calling Bs on the part that Sam is Giancana didn't have the power to protect Sammy, Giancana was way more powerfull then Mickey Cohen, The mob that couldn't shoot straight vs The Outfit yeah stop it you lost me, If anything Sam didn't want to help cause he didn't approve of the relationship either.
I agree. IR relationships were a taboo thing in the 1950s even though it occurred, many had to do it secretly. Sammy exclusively dated white women after his breakthrough in Ciro's in the early 50s. He HAD to hide it and would get mad if he was in the tabloid, the Confidential. Sure he dated black women, but he rather romanticize white women. Things were OVERTLY racist in those days.
Maybe Giancana himself didn't want to help also he was dealing with a lot of trouble with the Kennedies and the outfit at that time which led to his murder so you never know .
OleeoleeOO There’s no question that Sammy was absolutely the most multi-talented of all the rest of them combined, but I have to confess that my own personal favourite is Dean.
Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior had like one of the greatest friendships in music history Frank Sinatra called his brother at his tribute also he helped Sammy Davis Junior perform Mostly everywhere
Maybe so, but he sure didn't fight for him when it came to the inauguration of Kennedy, so that leaves me with a bad taste, Frank was good, but he sucked up to the kenndy's, (politics at it's finest)
What faces entertainers put forth to their fans is nothing like their real life. Like the rest of us, some have their demons and others have their hardships.
He wasn't at all, stop buying into all of the fake stuff. I've been a rat pack fan all of my life and have watched their footage endlessly. The main three, Sammy, Frank, and Dean were always messing around on set and if you sit down long enough and watch the footage it's hilarious. Sammy even made jokes about his own race, they ribbed each other back and forth and countless times you can see Sammy doubling over with laughter. They adored each others company, the difference back then compared to now was that there was far less political correctness shit. Did bad things happen then too? Of course, good and bad stuff is written throughout human history, but the thing is back then these people felt comfortable joking around in each others company. People were happy, relaxed, enjoying life. Nowadays you only have to sneeze and someone's offended, this is one of the main reasons why so many people are down in the dumps or low now. We need to stop being so uptight and just laugh at things more.

I'm a white widow of a loving black man. I can tell you that even in the 21st century, the assault on black men, no matter who they marry, is not just economic, educational, employmental or residential. This culture is unrelenting in efforts to slice up a man's self esteem and sense of confidence. Sammy is my hero, as is my Carl, both magnificent singers, both men of courage.
4:14 - That part isn't quite true, both Dean and Frank were racialised for their Italian heritage and Sammy was like a brother to them. They were three outcasts, three friends who often joked about each other. They never meant anything of it though. Just good friends.
@@ymsl, can you elaborate please? I'm getting my information from primary sources in the form of interviews with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr's autobiography and various secondary sources on both Frank Sinatra's life and The Rat Pack.
Sammy never really liked the jokes about him and his being black..he went along with it...but he never liked it because he thought he was tomming....he also went along with the so called friendly ribbing because he was thinking of a bigger picture.

Many didn't know Dean was only pretending to be hammered. It was part of the act. He learned a lot from Foster Brooks who turned it into an art form. Dean regularly would have Brooks on his variety show and celebrity roasts. Those were hilarious bits. Brooks actually gave up drinking in 1964. Someone bet him ten dollars he couldn't. He did. "At the time, I needed the $10."
Joey Bishop, was adored by Frank, yet Joey wanted little to do with being a "Rat Pack " member.. Sammy had Franks unwavering support when dealing with racism, and at least in Vegas, near as i recall, Frank demanded Sammy be allowed to come in the FRONT entrance to the Casino they were performing at, or, there would be no show.. Casino caved. Deano portrayed himself as a pure lush, and did drink, but, not nearly to the excess he portrayed, at least, not until he lost his Eldest Son, which by all accounts, he could never recover from.
Somewhere it is written, "Vanity of vanities, all is vanities. All is vanity and a chasing after the wind." Though not even close to being in the same league with Frank, I was in a band in high school with a modest following, had a hot girlfriend, a nice car. It seemed that I had it all. Yet, I only found real life in Jesus Christ.
Anyone who says Frank Sinatra exuded 'class' must have a different definition of the word than I do. It takes more than wearing black tie while performing, you know.
@Mark James Frank did some awful things, and some of them he did to Sammy. He also did some good. A young girl in St. Louis had her eyes cut up by a burglar in 1965 when Frank was in the Lou for a performance still on youtube. I remember the story. Perp blinded the young girl so she couldn't identify him. Forty years passed, and Frank died. After that, the young girl, by then a grown woman, revealed to the media she had had a birthday present, flowers, and money from Frank every year since her ordeal. He visited her in the hospital and took care that she was okay for the rest of his life.
Everyone has a private life that is different from the on screen. I never care for personal things. I only know those folks through their work, and that's what matters.
Grunge: Creator of this TH-cam Clip. Was rather okay... Though, you don't leave out much negative info on Sinatra... Yet, you show a small clip of the film... "Here to Eternity"... with negative dialogue on Sinatra... without mentioning Sinatra won Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film.

My grandmother told me many years ago that the real truth behind Sammy Davis Junior losing his eye was because he was messing with Kim Novak. He was badly beaten up by the mob and that’s how he lost his eye. Death would have been the next step if Davis continued the relationship with Novak. The car accident was used as a reason for the lost of Davis eye.

In his day Dean Martin was a giant in the field of entertainment, recording dozens of records including many gold and platinum albums, starring in over 60 movies, and he had a hit TV show for nine years. Dino was the original King of Cool!
Sadly the entire pier was destroyed in 2008 by Hurricane Ike and all of that memorabilia was lost to the Gulf of Mexico.
rip that tiki bar pier
They only scratched the surface and was incredibly kind here because there's alot of dirt that wasn't revealed especially about Sinatra.
I always loved watching Sammy Davis Jr. He was a consummate entertainer.
This is a Hit Job on the
Rat Pack!__Bad Show!
They say that the FBI got Frank's son back. What the true skinny is Frank called the Godfather and they return his son with apologies
Frank Jr had himself kidnapped. He needed the dosh, Frank Sr was tight.
From Canada: SAMMY DAVIS JR was 1 of my HEROES.
I really didn’t know all that about Sammy..damn. The blatant racism, threats ..i remember he was no hero in the young black community back in the 60s,especially after the picture of him hugging Nixon was released..but i remember seeing him on broadway in golden boy..his presence onstage always stayed with..
Sammy was the most talented and the most wonderful of all members of the rat pack, hands-down.
May he Rest In Peace .

Sinatra was a fascinating human being
I'm calling Bs on the part that Sam is Giancana didn't have the power to protect Sammy, Giancana was way more powerfull then Mickey Cohen, The mob that couldn't shoot straight vs The Outfit yeah stop it you lost me, If anything Sam didn't want to help cause he didn't approve of the relationship either.
Exactly!!! One phone call from Sam G and Cohen would have been picking Sammy up as his personal driver. Cohen didn’t have that kind of power to argue.
The mafia has always been racists
Idk fam his name is Cohen
Maybe Giancana himself didn't want to help also he was dealing with a lot of trouble with the Kennedies and the outfit at that time which led to his murder so you never know .
Sinatra would never have made it BIG without his mob connections! It is all very well documented.
I was him on stage at casino stateline Nevada ( South Shore Lake Tahoe )
Great , sing , dance and very funny
Sammy Davis jr. is my favorite and extremely talented.
OleeoleeOO There’s no question that Sammy was absolutely the most multi-talented of all the rest of them combined, but I have to confess that my own personal favourite is Dean.
Sammy was unquestionably the most talented indeed his breadth of talents pretty much outstripped everyone in the business before and since.🤗🌟🌟🌟
Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior had like one of the greatest friendships in music history Frank Sinatra called his brother at his tribute also he helped Sammy Davis Junior perform Mostly everywhere
Maybe so, but he sure didn't fight for him when it came to the inauguration of Kennedy, so that leaves me with a bad taste, Frank was good, but he sucked up to the kenndy's, (politics at it's finest)
Great group. Rest in Paradise All. 💜🙏
What faces entertainers put forth to their fans is nothing like their real life. Like the rest of us, some have their demons and others have their hardships.
When JFK first met Peter Lawford he is reported as saying." There are two things I hate , Actors and Englishman and you are both".
Ouch. 😖
Lol the Irish humor
Fkuk jfk, rule brittania 👊🇬🇧
@@mickharrison9004lol all the same now. Irish vrs English doesn't really exist anymore.
JFK father was US ambassador in England. WTF?
Great video, thank you so much.
Watch Sammy do Mr. Bojangles. He was a genius. Treated so badly.
SINATRA had his back and Sammy wasn't a pushover
The more talent the more crazy
Great video guy’s also I didn't know Frank Sinatra & Marlon Brando was didn’t like each at one point n there early careers! P.S yall should do video about About the MOST HATED WOMAN N AMERICA AT THE ONE THAT GOT PRAYING BANNED FROM SCHOOL N THE 60’s👀👀
Sinatra used to call brando marbles because he said it sounded like he had marbles in his mouth when he talked
OMG this is heart breaking ! Poor Sammy
Why is Joey Bishop barely in this video?
Happily it looks like Joey Bishop had know serious problems worth mentioning
I'm a white widow of a loving black man. I can tell you that even in the 21st century, the assault on black men, no matter who they marry, is not just economic, educational, employmental or residential. This culture is unrelenting in efforts to slice up a man's self esteem and sense of confidence. Sammy is my hero, as is my Carl, both magnificent singers, both men of courage.
God bless you, Jana.

I was doing just fine until the last 30 seconds. Now I'm depressed..... 1 800 whaaa?
Saturday Night Live should do a commercial parody for Dean Martin's Apple Juice!
i love all these old holly wood actors oh man wish i was alive during those times, love the rat pack!
It doesn’t sound like Tragedy to me. It sounds like a life.
Excellent article! Thanks from Texas.
In those days italian boxers couldn't even keep the last names, same with many singers.
Sammy never really liked the jokes about him and his being black..he went along with it...but he never liked it because he thought he was tomming....he also went along with the so called friendly ribbing because he was thinking of a bigger picture.
@@lindalott2859 Could you provide me a source on this? I've heard it a lot but would like to see any testament these were his honest to god thoughts. If so, that's just terrible.
Did you manage to out-evidence someone that they deleted their comment? Well done. I still think its ridiculous people can claim Sinatra was racist.
Everybody loves somebody Sometime.
I'll raise a cold one to Dino (apple juice), Frank, watcher for Sammy and Sammy himself.
nuff said.
Sammy by a mile , was the most talented . It sure wasn't Frank , he was just a bully .
Failed to mention that Sammy was a member of the Church of Satin and best buds with Antone Levay, Sinatra found out about this and went ballistic...
Sammy Davis was amazing. All rounder and legend.
Sammy was the daddy cool,
Of the 60's & 70"s :-)
Oh! The Rat Pack! I usually don't like modern art.
Ph yes modern art almost 100 years old
Joey Bishop, was adored by Frank, yet Joey wanted little to do with being a "Rat Pack " member..
Henry , i just wanna make sure im not kissing Nat King Cole over here
I am a lesbian
"An unexpected mountanside."? How did that happen? Did it just grow there?
It just grew overnight.
Yes, it did. One moment it wasn't there, and then one moment (several million years later) it just appeared.
😱
Tragic details? Good lord, everybody’s got stuff in their lives. These guys all were partying, rich and privileged celebrities. Fun to watch tho.
i was thinking the same thing. i thought this was about the Rat Pack-not everyone's personal 'tragedies' before they got to the rat pack.
Agreed. Sam G. was one of the most powerful of all the mobsters in the history of the Mafia.
Sammy was reported to have said
When we were segregated we saw
More of each other
Anyone who says Frank Sinatra exuded 'class' must have a different definition of the word than I do. It takes more than wearing black tie while performing, you know.
@Mark James Sorry. That's what comes of being half blind and using a virtual keyboard. The typos were strong in that post.
Professionally he did, personally you're right.
He exuded class.
He had some great qualities and some horrible ones but he knew how to act like a gentlemen.
Mrs. Nancy Sinatra outlived them all.
True
Everyone has a private life that is different from the on screen. I never care for personal things. I only know those folks through their work, and that's what matters.
I always thought joey Bishop was in the rat pack!.... must have been sleeping when he got mentioned
Ol, Frank was a Draft Dodger 😂
Grunge: Creator of this TH-cam Clip. Was rather okay... Though, you don't leave out much negative info on Sinatra... Yet, you show a small clip of the film... "Here to Eternity"... with negative dialogue on Sinatra... without mentioning Sinatra won Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film.
Poor Sammy...
What a ROTTEN video. Keeps jumping back and forth between years and players. Couldn't stand to watch more than about half of this vid: did it EVER mention Humphrey Bogart?
So many of these 'details' happened before and after the rat pack wasn't performing.
Hey everybody's got problems, made the wrong moves or have an off side .If they say or act like they don`t they`re lieing to themself or you .I just enjoy their talents That's something they were all had above the high grade .
In the book ( Deconstructing Sammy ) covers Frank, Dean and Sammy very well.
Untrue. The accident is recorded and easily found if you look yourself.
Implicit AI During the days of the Rat Pack who ruled every aspect of Las Vegas? It was no doubt the mafia. Anything could’ve been staged and no one would dare cross them.
Why can't I ever hear happy details from this channel.. always focused on the negative
Unexpected mountainside...
Nowadays Frank Sinatra would be treated for bipolar from what I heard
Oh yeah. Old Blue Eyes had ISSUES.
