His "stunt" raises the point: If _actual_ history, like say, delving deeper into slavery in the U.S., and/or subjects that speak to the experiences of traditionally marginalized folks are banned from school curricula, then why not materials that _truly_ indoctrinate people-like bibles-also be banned from schools?

In a secular setting, there is no rational excuse for not separating religion from state, but there is no such equivalence when it comes to history. There is no rational excuse for omitting shared history in schools - you know, _real_ things that actually took place.

You are either terrible at reading or just trying desperately to win an argument, because I did not actually press for a ban on bibles in school. Rather, I questioned the rationale of banning *real* [but inconvenient to some] history in schools, premised on the dubious notions that said history negatively "indotrinates" children, but for some odd reason, teaching the religion of one group in school is taken as perfectly rational and not an "indoctrination."
However, now that you brought up, a ban on teaching one particular religion in school is not hypocritical. It is well within secularism - you do know what that means, don't you? It is based on the idea that favoritism shall not be given to one religion over other religions. Furthermore, there is nothing more "idoctrinating" than exposing school children to the viewpoints of a particular religion, regardless of the philosophical background of students. You'll be hardpressed to demonstrate otherwise. Shared historical background of a nation does not infringe on the right or background of any student; it is _what it is_ - an accounting of the [shared] past.

Absolutely brilliant. My boys have been taught ethics in school instead of bible studies. It opens their minds instead of closes them. When my daughter was at school she was taught religious studies focusing on different religions from around the world (including Christianity), also giving her more perspective. I think it's the only way to go, plus science added to the mix you have generations who end up as critical and independent thinkers, something the world is in desperate need of.

Any religious text can be taught through an historical perspective, such as comparative religious studies. In public schools, religious text cannot be taught as truth however. The content of the Old Testament, including incest, and infanticide would not pass the criteria for inclusion into schools by the Mothers of Liberty. One of many examples is Ezekiel 23:20 "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses." If the Mothers of Liberty believe the Old Testament should be included in school libraries and classrooms, they will have lost their entire argument.

I have this memory of my 5th grade teacher asking all of the students in my class, if they go to church, if they are Christians, and what they feel about the story of Christ. In retrospect it was very wrong, there were kids that were visibly reticent to share their beliefs, many of them Christians that were raised thinking that it was wrong to do so (Matt 6); An ethical standpoint that is sorely lacking of late.
In 8th grade history, we spent a whole week covering the Abrahamic faiths, not the history of the Abrahamic faiths but their core beliefs. By this point, I was old enough to understand that this was very wrong and felt uncomfortable enough to stay home sick for a week; though we were staunch Christians. And wouldn't you know it, none of that material was on the test.
The purpose of education is to prepare students enough to be ready for the workforce and to socialize them enough that they don't get themselves fired or arrested within their first 2 years. Ideally, this is done as efficiently as possible, with as few resources as possible, in as little time as possible. Religious instruction has no place in the schoolhouse, in my opinion. It's fluff that detracts a lot.

I love every part of this and I agree that with public tax dollars funding our public schools than religion has zero place in there and that goes for the Bible, if you’re teaching about different religions then that’s a different story, but if you’re using the Bible to instruct,(like telling kids how to live their lives according to the Bible) then pull the kid out and go to private school where you can have all the Jesus you want. If you don’t want your kid to read something fine, but that doesn’t give you the right to unilaterally say that no one else should read it either. As a last note, I noticed something that as an atheist myself has happened to me, as soon as she found out he was her attitude got cold, like somehow he was suddenly going to start drinking blood on screen.🙄

Without religion, then it gives people no reason to be good. Religion is what keeps most people from killing eachother. Be careful what you wish for, because you may not like the result. Can you imagine a society that realizes they don't have to be good to get into heaven? They can kill, cheat and steal their way to the top? Or what about that person going through depression that is hanging on because they believe Jesus is there to help and he has to fight to live so he can go to heaven? If he no longer has that faith and hope, then why bother living anymore?

Traditionally children's books have been non explicit versions of stories to be taught to children. Wether it's history or mythology.

If for no other reason, beyond any religious or political aspect, ban it in the interest of fairness & consistency. If they enact a law its enforcement ought to be the same for every applicable case. If the government decides to just cherry pick which books get a pass, it could give the appearance of the government respecting an establishment of religion. I’m no expert but I do believe that skirts upon a 1st Amendment violation (which they already have by banning books in the first place).

I guess it depends on the state. I was raised in California, so I wasn't either (except for a brief period in 7th grade, when we learned ancient history, NOT the Bible specifically). Florida, I imagine, is probably quite different.

My all time favorite story is the tale of Lot and his Daughters.
Here's a man who God sent two angels to save him from the coming destruction of Sodom and its neighbor.
First, he offers his two virgin daughters to the crowd in place of the strangers, who the crowd wanted.
Then, he argues with the angels on who gets to get saved; winning enough of the argument to get them to include his wife and daughters.
The wife gets wiped when she violates the command to not look back.
Finally; once reaching the sanctuary God prepared for him his daughters get him drunk, rape him and create two new tribes.
And this man is considered one of the holiest of Biblical figures.
This makes it hard to know what it takes to be a Biblical 'holy' man...

But to those who hold to the precious Word of God, they don’t care. They have such a hunger and thirst for the Word of God that they are willing to risk their lives for possessing a Bible. What one group decided to do was take the Bible apart and then each one of them would memorize a book of the Bible that they had been given. For example, one man memorized the entire Gospel of Matthew while another memorized all of the Book of Romans. In this way, they would always have the Bible in their hearts; and you can’t ban or remove what’s been hidden in a person’s heart. When they all came together, even with no Bible, they would recite from memory certain books of the Bible so that they could all hear the entire Word of God, at least the New Testament. Today the Bible is illegal to own in some nations, but they can never eliminate the Word of God that’s been ingrained into a person’s mind. In fact, they could destroy the body but not the soul; and in a similar fashion, God’s Word is indestructible.

I would make the bibe rquired reading especially the OldTestament . That would stop a lot of future christians in their tracks,, make sunday school a lot more exciting and at a minimum make future christians aware of how absurd their religion is.
