Thanks this is really helpful, However I have a threaded flexibtail (that came with a nut and olive) that I need to connect to an existing isolation valve thread. I can't for the life of me work out how to do it, I expect I need to buy something to convert the threaded end of the isolation valve into plain pipe or new flexi tails ?

the flexpipe i have is a female fitting. but the problem is that im going from two taps to mono-bloc so not enough copper pipe to new fixing site. would it be possible to use another flexpipe as extention or do i just pipe to the new tap siite.
Spot on, I was about to connect to an isolation valve and you have answered my question. I was concerned that the plastic seal inside the flexipipe only sits right on the edge of the isolation valve mating surface. I was expecting a fitting with a flat mating surface or at least more contact area. Thanks

Exactly the answer I required for my new Lidl mixer tap. Thanks. It is a bit ironic that I am experienced in the installation all kinds of compression fitting stuff but wasn't sure about this. I suppose every operation has its first time.

I've since watched one of your other v-good videos: "How to use PTFE tape" - and realise you say don't need PTFE on compression fittings/threads (but can try it if the fitting is weeping.). Thanks. Hmmm now off to decide which new kitchen tap to buy - but it won't be one from ebay due to possible probs you outline here. I'll go for a WRAS approved one.

Hi, I was under the impression that you should not use a compression (male) directly into the female end of the flexi, as the washer contact area is considerably reduced by the fact that the male compression end has an internal chamfer?

But nobody does. You should though, because the chamfer for the olive can definitely sometimes knacker the washer.

Recommend using 15mm x 1/2 conex (compression) male irons on flexi pipes. Sometimes balafix's cut into the washers. Also water regs require a isolation point at EVERY draw off. If using bristan copper tails, never use compression as the copper is thin and cheap just collapses. Use plastic, or soldered connections

Your a very nice chap and good at explaining,the problem is avoid these if possible,there are a lot of people who have used these several years ago and have come back to the house with a burst the flexi hoses become porous after time if there’s a small leak or even condensation they wither go back to either pex pipe or copper.
I agree, but with most modern taps, these are the only option.
A mate of mine had a burst flexi and it made a right mess of the whole house!
I prefer traditional hot and cold taps, then you can pipe them up with copper pipe and tap connectors 👍

Hi - I'm just about to install a new tap, but used a solder ring 15mm to 1/2' male adaptor.
Just a question - how tight would you tighten the 1/2' adapter into the hose ? The one you're showing seems to have a fibrous washer, while my hoses have a black washer, which I suppose is rubber. I immagine that if you over-tigten, you can damage the washer seal ?

The rubber washers are normally better to be honest. As you rightly point out you do not want to over tighten it so if you nip it finger tight, then give it quarter to half a turn with a spanner it should be fine. Obviously just check it afterwards for leaks etc.

Help! I bought 2 flexible pipes that have that skinny m10 end for kitchen taps but my taps are a bigger(maybe 1/2") male end. Can I buy something to adapt them?? I need it to look like the wider bit of that first one at both ends
I don't think you can get reducers for them. Its probably best to take the tails back and exchange them for the correct ones.

In regards to the compression fitting type tails from my bath taps, can I connect this straight on to plastic JG plastic pipe under my bath that I have installed or would I be best transitioning to copper to connect them up.

You can connect them directly to the JG pipe- just make certain that you use pipe inserts.

Thinking that those Flexi Tails bought that are on eBay with the wrong thread size might be for that 'North American market' compression fitting Market, where they also do their own thing , here in Southern Ireland we actually kept the old imperial system going so you can get the likes of 1/2" and 3/4 " rather than 15mm and 22mm, we use Imperial to Metric compression adapter's here for a pastime , ( as you know in the likes of chemical and pharmaceutical Industry things get more that sketchy what with B.S.P and the North American... National Pipe Thread...N.P.T. and even today some trades people can't square that circle in their heads, historically same was never squared by so many countries post WW 11, might have been because of big brother Uncle Sam became the go to lad for supplies of that stuff around the Globe )... I need to plumb my dishwasher into pipes from 4 metres away can it work regaurding the dishwasher out pipe?, what can I do with extending that?
I want to remove the female type of flexi and just cap it temporarily can i remove the flexi and screw on a blank end onto the compression fitting?
Can I apply Teflon tape and Megaloc on that tiny male end that you screw into the bottom of your faucet base? The bigger end I attached to a shutoff valve, but I would like to know about the tiny male tip ( the tiny end with the threads and the rubber washer bands on the unthreaded part/ the part you are holding in your hand at 0:09) The first time when I connected the bottom to a shutoff valve, it was leaking from the top male part connected to the faucet because I noticed it had come unscrewed somehow after I connected all the other parts and had to take everything back a loose.
No, I would not do that.
The small end relies on O rings to make the seal. Sometimes there is one and sometimes two O rings. It looks like yours might be damaged and need replacing.
@@ultimatehandyman oops too late already done! I read on Google that both Teflon and megaloc both are not bonders or glues, so it had a male threaded post so I went for it! They can be removed. If still leaking, I will buy new hoses or get a refund. If it works, I will keep the faucet. My hoses somehow spun loose while I was tightening the other end that has the rotating tip, but the hoses are so stiff that they would not tighten while attatched to the shutoff valves even though that end has a rotating tip. People were complaining that no matter how tight they got the hoses, they leaked!!! Maybe they are cheaply made? I will find out the results later tonight....😳

No, I don't think they are rated for constant hot water, they would also look terrible!
Hi, when fitting our flexi tap tails, they get very bent due to the height between the pipes and the sink only being 200mm and the flexi tail is 300mm. Are they okay to be bent a lot? As I cannot find any pipes shorter then 300mm. Thank you,
They are not designed to be bent a lot, but as long as the tails are not kinking they should be ok (or you could shorten the pipework perhaps?)

The original flexitail failed and it has 2 o rings on it , but the replacement i bought has only 1 o ring on the flexitail. Is this still compatible? I am guessing the flexitail with the 2 o rings would be more water tight?
I'm not sure, but have seen both types.
I'd try and get one with two O rings to be on the safe side.

Thanks for this great tutorial - handy tip on using a spare compression nut! We have individual hot and cold taps leading to a separate mixer spout in a 3 hole setup bath. I checked the fittings beneath the bath today and noticed the brass on one tap had turned completely black. Is this level of corrosion/tarnishing normal, or do you think the flexi tail connection is weeping? Heard you can use Fernox LS-X to seal weeping joints, is it worth running some this around each nut? Appreciate your advice, cheers!
If the nut has turned black, it’s probably weeping and the water has turned to mould. I once had a similar problem in my bathroom, and there was a huge piece of black slime running down the pipe.
I’d take a good luck at the flexi tails, they deteriorate over time. If they are older than 10 years old, I would seriously consider replacing them. I replaced a basin tap a few weeks back , and the flexi tails had started to fray and were sharp. The Fernox sealer should work, but it’s worth checking the condition of the flexi’s 👍
As a side note, I used to work in a chemical plant and there was a register of all flexi’s on site. They had to inspected periodically to ensure they were fit for purpose!
Hi, the flexi's look fine, no sign of deterioration, and the nut on them looks okay. No slime visible, all bone dry. I've never seen brass go like this before, it looks like somebody spray painted the entire thing with matt black paint. Unless it's weeping from the what i assume is a ceramic washer? Or because it's closer to the external wall that might have condensation on it? Very strange. Will let you know if i find out what it is. Thanks again for your reply, keep up the great channel!
It is not a good idea to thread a half inch bsp female thread onto an isolating valve. The isolating valve has a tapered end designed for an olive. This end could cut into the washer causing a leak. Far better to use a short piece of pipe out of the isolating valve and fit a 15mm to half inch bsp male adapter. This fitting has a much broader flat end. Less chance of damaging the fitting

I wanted to fit a pair of flexible tap connectors on to some isolating valves and also didn't think it was good to do this because of the taper. After doing a bit of searching I found that screwfix sell flexible tap adapters specifically for this purpose. It's basically an extension piece which you fit into the valve as you would a pipe but it has a threaded end for the tap connector with a flat face so as to give a good seal.
Nick Collins You get special "flexi tail adapters" which are about 3 quid for a pair. One end is smooth 15mm and goes into the isolation valve and the other end is threaded, with a flat end...

why is one of the metal nozzle longer when you buy these in pack of 2?
Maybe a daft question, but where do you get a spanner to fit the other end of the flexihose? I’ve just bought a mixer tap and where the flexihose connects is to deep to get a spanner in to tighten it to the mixer tap.
Some manufacturers say that you only need to tighten the tap end by hand, as there are two sealing "O rings", if you still have the instructions I would check.

Ultimate Handyman the instructions just say tighten firmly. They don’t say with or without a spanner. I’ve just hand tightened them and will be fitting it shortly so we’ll see how it goes

I have tried to fit the connector via olive and nut to my chrome wash pipes and it is just too loose. Tap instructions say not to use a spanner to tighten, is it lying to me?
I'm afraid you will not compress the olive without using a couple of spanners, the instructions must be wrong

I am fitting flexi tails to a Franke Ascona tap how tight should the tails be tightened can i use hand tightening or should i use a pair of grips?
Normally at the tap end, you can just tighten them by hand, as they have O rings to make the seal. I normally give them a really gentle nip with grips though, to be certain.

You just need to find the correct ones for your particular tap (sometimes it's a good idea to take the tap into the local branch)
***** Think he means the female connector, which is exactly what brought me here, even my local plumbers merchants doesn't sell female flexi tail pipes. All Screwfix/b+Q sell are male adapters which require cutting copper pipes. I already have all the pipes/isolators but can't get hold of a female pipe to replace my leaking one. Ebay seems the only place.

How tight do you recommend tightening these after hand tightening to prevent the threaded end of the compression fitting from over digging into the sealing washer?
As tight as possible using my fingers, then 1/4 of a turn with a spanner.

Yes, compression fittings can be used on copper or plastic pipes (with the insert)

Copper pipes can be soldered, it is down to personal preference if solder/compression or push fit fittings are used to join the pipe.

If you use a compression fitting do you have to seal it with teflon tape or did you not do that b/c the fitting was like a sharkbite? :/ Sorry, I'm in the U.S. so the language may not translate!! Thanks for the video though, helped quite a bit. :)
No, you don't need PTFE tape on compression fittings, as the olive (called a ferrule in the US) creates the seal.
The flexi tail's have a rubber sealing washer, but there is a better type of isolation valve available for this purpose, which can be seen in this video- th-cam.com/video/vJmbPRVYuJY/w-d-xo.html

No, they still flare some copper pipes, but it is not something I have ever done.

I bought a new kitchen tap from Aldi last week. When I screw the flexi tail onto the compression fitting to both the hot and the cold both leak. I can't tighten it any further as it seems to be right up against the middle of the compression fitting. Its almost as if it is too deep for the compression fitting. Anyone know how I can fix this without calling out a plumber? It seems it should be straightforward enough but its not tight enough so water is coming out of the flexi tail. Its very annoying

+Ultimate Handyman After I posted this I took a look and they hadn't added any washers. Anyway a quick run to Screwfix £1.59 for 20 flexi hose half inch washers and its sorted in less than 3 minutes!! I can't believe they didn't add washers!!

You might have to use a small piece of pipe to go from the male at the feed end.

You can fit either a compression isolation valve or a straight compression fitting, then use one of the tap tail adapters.
I got a 3 way compression joint can i fit the flexi tail to one of them ?
Don't use compression fittings use a 1/2" BSP x 15mm fitting compression fittings will cut the washer over time.

the tap actually comes with copper feed pipes which admittedly I didnt relise, So I went to screwfix for some flexi tails instead, but as I said all ends are male. ?

Did the flexi tails that you bought not come with nuts and olives?
You need 4 nuts and 4 olives and some 15mm pipe to go from the fittings you have now to the new flexi tails.

Or if the flexi tails are long enough you can undo the two nuts that you already have connected to the water pipes and remove the brass body from one and the isolation valve from the other and screw the flexi tails directly into the nuts as the olives will still be left on the pipes.
But the only problem with doing this is that you are then removing an isolation valve (you should really have isolation valves fitted to both pipes)

yeah the flexi tails did come with olives and nuts, also there is a isolation valve on the other pipe below just out of view.
I guess what's confused me (very easy to do) is that the plumber that fitted the pipes years ago has done an arse about face job. he should of fitted the isolation valves at the same height on both pipes and used some pipe above it. would you mind sending me a link for female ended flexi tails if you know of anyone that sells them....il change them rather than removing anything.

You have to make sure you get the right ones though, as they make them with a 10mm or 12mm male end to screw into the tap.
The other end will be 1/2 inch BSP
Why don't they put 3/4" female BSP ends on these tails. It would seem more logical and then they could be used with "washing machine" isolation ball valves.
I don't know but I agree completely, it would be much better.

you should also mention not to overtighten when fixing to an iso or a compression straight as they can cut into the rubbers and destroy them, you can get "straight Bushes" basically a compression straigh with a flatter contact point instead of the "point" on isos and compression straights
