Worth it. You can probably get a new lock, clean it out. An reuse as a machine to make more money without paying for the machine. This is an absolute win.
It is true - replacement locks are only a few bucks - we cleaned the heck out of this machine but in the end, it didn't clean up enough for us to feel comfortable adding it to our vending route and selling drinks to customers out of it.
(Former coke worker here) most the time we dont come pick up the vending machines because we have nothing to do with them so we take them back to the warehouse and put them in a storage room and they just sit there forever i worked at coke and had family members that did for 7 years damn near and the first vending machine put in the room is still there and theres barely space for the new ones that are getting set up

It's called a bill acceptor, since it takes numerous "bills" not just dollar bills. Also why would coke pick up a machine from a building that was demolished? Come on
Educate yourself on bill acceptors - some only take $1 this was one of them. And coke was supposed to pick up the machine before the building was demolished. They didn't. So the demo company set the machine outside the building before they demo'd it. Then it sat there for years. Anything else I can clear up for you?
Should have sold the cans. Collectors, much like myself, would love to get their hands on such a find. Plain (especially diet) Coke cans from certain eras are somewhat difficult to come by because original owners still see them as normal Coke cans, therefore they usually think nothing of it and discard of them. That’s why some vintage “limited edition” varieties are more readily available than the regular.
If you were keeping that machine, you shouldn't have drilled the lock. Those tubular vending machine locks are insanely easy to open with a tubular lock pick, and it will even tell you what the pin cuts are so you can get a new key cut.
Be glad it was so old and from before Coke started distributing Monster products. I worked in a Coke distribution warehouse and we had a leaking pallet of monster coffee that had been sitting in the back of a stack for god knows how long. When we finally dug it out the smell was indescribable, and wouldn’t leave your nostrils for days. Not to mention all the maggots.

it wasn't in the most easily accessible area - the property owner also had to let us through a gate to get to it. So it was semi protected
