    My Sensei told me that a "Block" is not always a block and a "strike" is not always a strike. It is the end position for a technique. Doesn't look practical without a partner but I can assure you there's more to the move than meets the eye, with each move and hand position.

    I wouldn't use these blocks against a strike, instead for grappling or joint locks.

      Exactly!!
      Furthermore, it is my understanding that these were actually supposed to be mainly used as weapon techniques, remember that old cultures practiced weapons open handed at first so new students could practice without harm and could burn the movements into their heads.
      Karate used to have all sort of weapons back in Okinawa, now those are usually only found in Kobudo. But the "open hand" techniques of Karate can still be found in Kobudo, usually with the Sai and the Tonfa.
      But yes, if you were unarmed, you were supposed to use them as grappling. Soto Uke can be an arm drag or joint lock, Uchi Uke can be a grip break, Shuto Uke can be a takedown, etc

    There are no real blocks in karate
    If you research the original Okinawa karate you'll find that what became known as blocks are actually strikes

      That is correct. Strikes and often a grapple. Karate has no "blocks".

      @GeorgeGeorge-by2lf Hardly.

      Which is why they don't often practice jiyu kumite in Okinawa. The chances of executing a "strike-nay-block" against a fast, non-cooperative punch is laughably low. You have to derive usable parries and blocks FROM kumite and drill them. And, of course, practice live jiyu kumite along with everything else.

      Also, these were indeed used as blocks, but only in the weapon part of the art. If you had a Tonfa or Sai and somebody tried to slice you, then Gedan Barai, Soto/Uchi/Age uke are actually useful
      Same with stuff like morote tsuki and awase tsuki. If you have a Bō, Nunchaku or other weapon, you can wield it sideways and block with it in that way
