you can take the AirTrain to Howard Beach for the A to Lower Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn, or AirTrain to Jamaica for the E to midtown; depending on where you're staying in NYC (where's the specific cross street of the hotel)?
Thank you thank you, this is going to be so much help and savings for me. Oh and btw you are incredibly pretty girl, but I guess you already know that I mean you probably got a mirror at home.
I literally just landed at JFK for the first time and had your video ready to go. I’m on the Penn Station train right now and I can’t thank you enough. There’s no way I would’ve known about this without your video, and you just saved me a considerable amount of money and stress. I just wanted to say thank you so so much for this video.
@@nathananand Yeah it is easy. I do it from JFK every time I go to NYC. Except I am to cheap for the LIRR and I just take the subway straight from Jamaica station.
Im two years late, but I just recently went to nyc a week ago in April 2021, and landed in Newark. Took the airtran from there to the city, and it was great! Also, on my way back to Newark on my departure, I pulled a shortcut on the Uber prices. Since I still had money on my metrocard, I took path at Heralds Square to Hoboken, and then took Uber from there. Instead of $53 from my midtown manhanttan hotel, I cut it down to $23 by just taking that path train into Jersey. Takes a little more planning, but where there's a will, there's a way!
You should have mentioned that there are three options to get into the city from JFK, you have the railroad, A train and J train (subway). The A and J trains are only USD 2.75, and they can practically take you anywhere in NYC, as you can switch trains later for the same price. The railroad is more expensive and takes you only to one place in NYC (Penn Station).
Yeah the E from Jamaica is actually easier and faster because it gets to midtown from Sutphin Boulevard which is connected to the AirTrain, directly. It crosses under the East River and avoids the entire borough of Brooklyn and connects Queens to midtown so you can get off wherever your hotel is or come to Port Authority and take a taxi from the taxi stand, there are always cabs 24 7 which is pretty cheap if you are in midtown or thereabouts or walk from whichever stop is closest to your hotel or hostel.
Can kindly you tell me.. 1) I need to go to Jamaica stn area from JFK. Which train is cheaper? 2) What's the best train to go from queens Jamaica station area to central Harlem. Will 7 day 32 dollar pass work for both 1 and 2?
For the LaGuardia method, you don’t have to switch to the 7 train at Queensboro Plaza. Just stay on the N or W train and it will take you all throughout Manhattan even more than the 7
Yes, the N/W stops at Central Park, the theater district. Times Square, Herald Square (Macy's), Madison Square (Flatiron building), Union Square, Soho, Chinatown, Wall Street area, and South Ferry.
everytime I fly into NYC it's into LaGuardia and her route it's more transfers involved if 42nd street is the end game, I take the Q70 to Jackson Heights then take the 7 train from there
yeah I take the train from Newark it's cheaper and avoid traffic and all that; but good to know about this bus; always good to have options and it is only $1.50 more so a pretty good backup plan in case the train is being troublesome
From Jamaica, you also have the option of taking the E train to Midtown, which can be cheaper than the LIRR at times but does take longer. You can also take the J train to get to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Alternately, one can take AirTrain to Howard Beach and transfer to the A train there to go to anywhere along the west part of Manhattan.
PSA!! theres another way you can get to Manhattan from Newark Airport. its the NJ Transit for $13.00 one way. all you do is take the Airtrain for NJ Transit from the terminals and it takes about 30mins to get to Penn Station.
Also just to clarify there are two Penn Stations when taking the NJ transit train from EWR. The first one will be Newark Penn Station, the second is the actual NY Penn Station.
What about from Newark to Jersey City? My wife and I are staying there for our NY trip and are figuring the cheapest option from the airport to our rental in Jersey City.
from LGA you could stay on the N, W trains. they go down 7th Ave at 57th St then continue through Broadway, they stop at times sq and Harold sq (not far from Penn). Also from LGA You could take the M60 to Lexington and 125th St get on the 4,5,6 trains to grand central or 125th St and Lenox and catch the 2,3 trains that run express to times square and Penn. AT JFK, If you're strapped for money and cant afford the LIRR from Jamaica to Penn, take the E train to Manhattan it hits most tourist areas and stops at port authority( near times square), 34th st (near Penn) and heads south on 8th Ave to World Trade Center. Another tip: if your hotel is in Lower Manhattan and you're arriving from JFK, you can take the J train straight into Lower Manhattan from Jamaica center.
Great video. I just wanted to add that one of the cheapest ways from EWR is taking the free shuttle to EWR's North Area and then taking bus 107 to Port Autority, from there it takes 30 mins and costs $6. Definitely not a very common route used by travelers, mainly by locals and employees but works like a charm. From JFK, the cheapest way Ive done it is buying a $32 unlimited ride Metrocard (which I had to buy anyways) at a kiosk and then go to Terminal 5 and take local bus Q10 to Lefferts Blvd/Ozone Park station and switch to the A train to Manhattan. This way you can skip the extra $5 for the Airtrain and your trip from the airport is already covered by the unlimited Metrocard.
Love the vid 👏🏻 Actually love all your videos! But I think for these suggestions for tourists/people taking public transit when coming to New York, these options are really only viable for people coming alone, with minimal luggage, and time to spare. Because, if you are coming with two people, it’s not much more money to get an Uber or taxi. If you have luggage or are older, it’s incredibly difficult to carry those bags around the subways (less than 25% of all subway stations have elevator access). And if you are on a timed schedule, the subways often run late (especially when having to transfer 2+ times). So, IMO, I’d say take an Uber or taxi to get to Manhattan if you have 2+ people, have luggage, or want to get to the city in good time.
I completely agree! I had my children with me, we all had luggage. The subway assistant in Jamaica Queens was unfriendly and unhelpful. Bought a subway card only for it not to work. Uber saved us at that point.
My sister and I are flying into LaGuardia next month for my b day and staying in Queens, but we're coming from two different cities(I'm in Orlando and my sister is in Atlanta). No way in hell I'm taking a train with my luggage lol. I'll take the train to other places if needed.
If you're willing to have a longer (cheaper) trip you can ride the 62 bus to the Newark PATH station and then take the PATH in. Works even better if your hotel is in Jersey City or Hoboken.
Another fast Newark option is to take the North Jersey Amtrak line from the AirTrain terminus to Secaucus and then Secaucus into Hoboken (use PATH to get into NYC)
Wtf why would u pay $7.50 to get on the Long Island railroad when you can go downstairs pay $2.75 to get on the e train or j train and it will take u into the city
i like pizza because she’s making videos for the average lost tourist, the first timer, the one that gets scammed in every corner of the city and ends paying $20 for a free picture with Elmo in Times Square
if you're cheap and going from JFK take the subway (line E goes to Penn station) it only costs 2,75 (+1 for a metrocard if you don't have one). It is a little slower but equally easy
This is my first time in New York and you’re instructions from JFK into the city are so spot on, your videos are so relevant and i felt like i knew where I was and what I was doing because I saw everything on your video!! You definitely made my trip into the city cheaper and more convenient!! Thank you!!
You are sensational- for all people on a budget AND for people who need easy to understand directions, as well ! Keep up the good work...you make peoples' lives go much smoother and that is both a virtue and wonderful talent to have!
Newark: get off plane, take airport skytrain to Amtrak line into Penn station NYC, like 4-5 stops, like $15USD. There's also a new jersey penn station along the way so don't get off there lol. Like 45 minutes-1 hr in total. Done.
Tip: We came from JFK last week and used the Airtrain to Jamaica Station ($6 to get off, $5 ticket + $1 because you need to print a new ticket) When you get past that you can buy an unlimited metro card for 7 days ($33, $32 for the ticket + $1 because you need to print a new ticket)
*I prefer using Newark because of the airport bus. An iPhone is too hi-tech for me, so I print my tickets at home beforehand. It's easier than falling out of bed, plus you get some nice views on the way into Manhattan. Bonus*
Wellll....these are not always the cheapest options. Consider: From JFK via Jamaica, if you get the LIRR City Ticket, then your total cost (including AirTrain) is $9, a nice savings compared to $15.25 for a peak LIRR ticket. However, it’ll cost you only $7.75 to use the subway, which also goes to Penn Station. The E train is express in Queens so it’s a pretty fast ride. For LaG, I think I saw you pay two one-way fares-one each for the SBS bus and subway. The Q70 SBS takes you to the subway at Roosevelt Av in Jackson Hts, and it’s a free transfer to the subway. For EWR, New Jersey Transit gets you to Penn Station in about 30 min for $13.00 (including the $5.50 AirTrain fee)-cheaper and faster than the bus. However, the LIRR is easier with luggage because you don’t have to use turnstiles, or drag luggage up and down steps getting on and off a bus. Some NJT trains are split-level, which means using steps with luggage, but if you’re lucky, you may snag a seat just inside the doors. Just adding some additional perspective...
Sally Smith If I have to pack for a trip that includes 1-2 weeks of leisure as well as several interviews in different location, I have to drag luggage with me. And just because you don’t check a carry-on doesn’t mean it’s not luggage.
Sally Smith This is a video about traveling to Penn Station from the various NY airports. You can shill for a luggage company (how much of a thrill did that give you? Still smoking the cig you lit after that comment?) and get hung up on semantics all you want-it changes nothing about my comment. You travel your way, I’ll travel mine...mmmmmmkay....sweetie? *smooches*. 😘
Sally Smith I admit I’m a bit “old school” when I travel, but I get the impression that you think every traveler is a fit 20-something seeing the world one hostel at a time. .Business travelers and the elderly don’t use backpacks and many people who travel internationally for several weeks may need to pack a large case, particularly if the case is being shared.
The M60SBS to Subway transfer costs another fare only if you pay in cash. If you pay by MetroCard, you get a free transfer. Same thing with Q70SBS to Subway.
For the M60 (or any select bus service) they don't take your receipt unless the passengers are being audited randomly. 99% of the time, you'll just leave it on your pocket until you get home and throw it away.
Sarah Funk , are you ever worried about luggage thieves yanking your suitcases out of your hands while walking around the subway stations and after you get out of the train station?
Just went for ten days to NYC, I downloaded your videos with TH-cam premium, they have been a great help! It was amazing to go to this city. A vacation I will never forget. Thank you so much!
I live in the middle of nowhere Canada and flew into Newark. It was super easy and I am an anxious traveller. I had lovely passengers help me find my way and a staff member who actually used the machine to get my ticket and walked to me the platform. I made more friends from the airport to my hotel in Times Square than I do in a year. Going back in March to do it again!
Hi how long does that take ? I arrived to Newark Airport at 7AM and want to see the statue of liberty, but I have to at Metlife stadium by 2PM for wrestlemania lol!
@@theparttimeadult3350 Glad you had a good experience in my hometown of Newark. Conde Nast magazine rated us the most un friendly city in the world. I don't know where they get this false information.
With JFK, other option is the take the E or A subway, just standard subway fare. Also, with LGA, if you’re going anywhere other than grand central, staying on the N or W is easier plus more transfers than the 7. Lexington Avenue for the 4, 5, 6, and r, 47th and 7th for the q, Times Square for the 1, 2, 3, 7, a, c, e, and 42nd street shuttle trains, 34th street Harold square for the b, d, f, and m lines, and 14th street for the 4, 5, and 6 again and the l.
If someone is on the N train and they are going to Times Square/Herald Square, there is NO NEED to transfer to the 7. The N/Q/W trains go to directly to Times Square.
Kennected. 100% right. No need to make an unnecessary transfer like that when the train you are on will take you to the same place as the other train. Only thing to add to this is be aware of track work. Cause when track work fucks up your line, be careful. Go to mta.info and check to see if your line is running like it is supposed to.
Depending on where you're going, you may take the M60 to Astoria or just take it to Manhattan to the 4/5/6, 2/3, 1, A/C, or B/D. I prefer that over catching the train in Astoria, but it depends on where you're going.
JFK pro tip for the frugal: Take the Airtrain to long term parking for free, walk 15 minutes to Aqueduct Station (this costs roughly 12 minutes net) then take the A for an hour. You get to take in beautiful N. Conduit Ave.
Can you get more specific on the roads involved here? It looks like there are areas with no sidewalk. It appears that this walk would take longer. But I think you have something here.
@@willieturner There's a sidewalk. Get off the AirTrain at long term parking (penultimate stop, before Howard Beach), walk 500 yards north on Lefferts Blvd, then go west on North Conduit Ave for 1000 yards until you reach the Aqueduct North Conduit stop on the A. It takes an extra 12 minutes but saves you $5. The walk is 15 minutes but the last leg of the AirTrain, plus walking down to the subway, plus the first leg on the subway totals about 3 minutes. Hence, net of 12. Not great if you have large luggage.
Just a heads up for how Peak/Off-Peak works: If your train is scheduled to ARRIVE at Penn Station (Jamaica westbound TO Penn Station) between exactly 6:00AM-10:00AM, you must have a PEAK ticket. If your train is scheduled to DEPART Penn Station (Penn Station TO Jamaica and other points east) between exactly 4:00PM-8:00PM, you must have a PEAK ticket. Any other scenario is considered off-peak. People who take the Long Island Rail Road commute into the city for work from Long Island. Peak is during the peak direction in rush hour. If you're standing on the platform and see a massive horde of people waiting to get on the train, chances are it's peak. When in doubt, buy an off-peak ticket. If it did happen to turn out to be a peak ride, the conductor will just ask you to pay the difference. This is not the case for not having a ticket, you will have to pay the regular price plus a penalty of about $8 per person.
I would like to add that the M60 bus from LaGuardia goes to Manhattan too. Since I was staying in the Upper West Side, it was very convenient for me to take this bus and go directly to the airport.
I dropped my friend off at the airtrain when she visited me in NYC. I went to leave and found out you pay as you leave. I pled my case with the woman in the booth and she let me though for free.
the most effective & less costly is from LGA - Q70 shuttle bus - Jackson heights/Roosevelt station - then from Roosevelt station take a train that near to your destination
I disagree about Newark. I found it very easy to get the air train to the NJ transit train station then 25 minutes (3 stops) and $13 each later we were in Penn Station in NYC. There is one fee for the air train and the train in to Penn Station. Its cheaper and quicker than the bus of course depending where you want to go but as stated in the video at Penn you can go anywhere from there.
but wouldn't the Express Bus be more comfortable when there's no transfer and it takes you straight to the PA? I seriously want to know bec I'll be going to Newark/NY soon
Before you think it’s as easy as she says: the app you decide is now called MTA Train Time & is only for LIRR & Metro north. As far as the subways goes your only options are Omny & Metro Card
It's just amazing how you explain every detail of the city so effortlessly. Lovely videos Sarah! I am coming there for a very long stay for about five years atleast! Thank you so much for your videos. Also can you make one video on accommodations for bachelors at a cheaper rate in the New York City? It would be of great help! Thanks in advance.
2:00 Or, alternately, follow signs to the E, J and Z trains, and for $2.75, get a one seat ride to East Midtown, Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan. (You could also ride the AirTrain to Howard Beach and take the A train from there)
I fly into Newark and take the train to Penn Station, easy and cheap. Make sure your ticket is to New York Penn Station. Buy your ticket, use the ticket to open the gate to get on the airport train, change to the NJ Train
I disagree price DOES matter when coming from EWR. Coming from JFK or LGA you can take NYC transportation. When coming from EWR, you'll need to ride NJTransit or a bus which is extra. Not everyone budgets for that. Buy that unlimited metrocard. Google maps is the best app to use for getting around the city, especially if you're an android user. For buses, use google maps on MTA bus app. From LGA people should stay on if going to the westside of Manhattan.
Ernest Kovach the m60 is 2.75, it’s a select bus service which is a bit different then a regular bus because you have to put your metro card inside a machine that’s near the bus stop and a receipt comes out, that receipt is your proof of payment then once you get off at 125th take the 4 train which is 2.75 to wherever you’re going
Yes, only 5.50 per person From Grand Central you can take the 4567 or shuttle train which goes to times square. But the subway is not a pleasant place. Fast but dirty. Also laguardia is under renovation so expect delays on the highway while on the bus. Also remember that if your flight comes to NYC between 5am and 10am expect the bus travel to take a while due to rush hour traffic and the trains to be packed. BTW this route only applies to laguardia
The total for each way is 2.75. When taking the M 60 the cost is 2.75. When transferring to the subway, there is one free transfer so it will not cost anything extra to take a train to anywhere on the subway system.
I visited New York about 20 years ago and my dad had planned out the cheapest way to get to the hotel. We flew into JFK, then I think we caught the free car rental bus, then we walked across a large parking lot to a subway station in the middle of nowhere, and finally got the train into Manhattan. We were complaining the whole time because we had big suitcases and other bags to carry, and this was before we had cases with wheels.
M60 bus, you need to hold on to your receipt. You don't put it anywhere. The MTA does random checks on the bus on different stops. They will fine you if you don't have a ticket. Always have your receipt ready in case they ask for it.
fastest. Newark Airport. Once you land take an Uber or Lyft to Newark Penn Station (10 minute car ride for about $10). go for pool or shared and it can be cheaper than the Air Train. Once you're at Newark Penn Station take the 25 to 30 minute ride on the PATH train to World Trade Center (if going downtown or Brooklyn) or 33rd Street if going to Midtown or Uptown (or the Bronx) for $2.75 using a NYC Metro Card (they work on PATH trains). This train runs a lot more frquently, every 5 or 10 minutes during rush hour than the Air Train. I have done this from World Trade Center to Newark Airport using The PATH train and Uber/Lyft in just under an hour too many times to count. Avoid the Long Island Railroad or New Jersey Transit because Penn Station is a disaster. There are always delays. which means Newark Airport is your fastest way out of the city. The only fast way out of NYC to Newark air port is The PATH train. Dont forget there are two Penn Stations... one in Newark, New Jersey and the one in Manhattan at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue. Don't make the mistake of ordering the wrong one on Uber.
Extremely helpful, thank you so much for uploading! The most stressful part of the journey from JFK looks to be determining peak/off-peak. I have an 8 hour layover at JFK next month, thank you in advance for showing me the way! :)
The quickest and cheapest airport is LGA to get to Queens, Manhattan, Brooklin and The Bronx. Get the Q70 bus just outside the airport, after 15 minutes off pick one will be at Jackson Hts Station - Roosevelt Avenue, get the blue line, train E to Manhattan. One can also get the yellow line -R train, orange line - M train, and purple line- 7 train. It will cost $2.75 if you have the metro card. If you don't have one then it will cost $5.50. Pay the bus by cash, and then get a metro card at the train station when you arrive.
As a fellow NYer (Manhattan) this is pretty sound, straightforward advice. These are generally the "best" or easiest ways to do it, and of course there are always exceptions. There are certainly cheaper ways, but balance that against schlepping bags around, time, individual vs group, and fewer transfers. Excellent advice and high production quality!
Great Video! I find that the Best (easiest) way from LGA is the following - Take the Q70 bus to Jackson Heights (Roosevelt - only 1 exit from airport) then take the R train to Manhattan (the R train stops at most of the pertinent Manhattan stops south of Central Park). This is the most direct way imo.
TAKE THE AirTrain TRAIN FROM NEWARK (EWR) to Penn Station in Manhattan. Its about $10 and takes 20 mins. The Amtrak or NJ Transit trains stop at EWR Airport. If you have an early or late flight and the service isnt running, take an uber to Newark Penn station ($10) and take NJ transit ($5) or PATH trains($2.75) to Manhattan. Traffic sucks, take rail.
Okay, I'm defending Sarah: I keep reading in the comments "You forgot..." Maybe she didn't forget, there's prob many ways to do it, but it's a great discussion for others to put in their experiences and tips and share the wealth! Thanks all! Thanks Sarah! Coming to NY in September - can hardly wait! Have watched all your NY vids in preparation. :) Much thanks!
+That's What "i" Said Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I selected what I thought were the best ways. Of course there are other ways and everyone is welcome to share. Thanks for sticking up for me!
An even cheaper way to get to NYC from Newark Airport is taking NJ Transit train to Penn Station NY. Currently a one-way ticket for an adult is $12.25.
I just want to add that several years ago, the 7 line was extended to the West Side. It stops at Hudson Yards. If anybody wants to go to the West Side of Manhattan, this train goes to 34th Street and 11th Avenue.
Seriously, NJT is absolutely the BEST way to get from Newark to NY Penn (from where you can literally get anywhere in the Northeast easily). And NJT is far more comfortable and quieter. That one just blew my mind.
Excellent video! You need to stay close to the camera if you don’t have a wireless microphone. Your presentation is excellent. And you’re so upbeat! Great job!
So glad to see this video has over half a million views. Sarah, you helped save me a lot of anxiety and time from this clear explanation video. Thank you!
Alright About the M60 Disclaimer do this at your own risk !!! You can ask riders that are getting off of the bus if they have a ticket they can give you and boom a automatic free ride !
It does matter which airport. NEVER FLY INTO OR OUT OF LAGUARDIA. Not unless you want to spend extra hours to days in transit. At Jamaica you can also get on the E for $2.75 and save even more, though it takes a little longer, but you can get off wherever, not just 34th-penn station.
Hi Sarah Many thanks for this great Video I think you forgotten the Airtrain from JFK to Howard Beach . Thanks you can use the train A to Brooklyn and Manhattan Rgds Joachim
Nobody mentioned this, from EWR take NJT to Newark Penn, buy a ticket which is inexpensive as it is a short ride, then from Newark Penn take PATH to WTC or Penn Station for 2.75. I’ve gotten from Newark airport to Penn for 4 dollars
What an incredibly useful (and GENEROUS) video! I have future plans to visit NYC and this will be very helpful info. THANK YOU! (Yes, I'm yelling a little.)
Thanks MrPhotoman75! If you found this helpful, you might want to check out the other videos in my NYC series here: bit.ly/NYCplaylistNew. Have fun in New York and I hope you subscribed!
At JFK, when you take the Air Train, please be sure to take the correct Air Train which will take you to Jamaica Station. There is another Air Train which goes in circle that takes you to every terminal within JFK. Sarah does NOT explain this in her video, and you will be pissed off at her (for missing the details) when you find yourself in the wrong Air Train.
Another option from Newark Airport is to get the AirTrain to the train that takes you to Penn Station and it's only $12.50, compared to the $17 ride in the bus. Done it a few days ago. Super good, and less money!!
I recommend taking the M60 bus and just stay on until you get to Columbia University. Columbia has the 1 train for the red line which you can take all the way south downtown if you want. It's less changes between vehicles if that's your cup of tea!
It costs $12 on NJ Transit from most places in NJ to Manhattan.. I just did that 2 weeks ago. There is an airtrain from the NJ Transit stop in Nrwark to the airport, but the whole thing is still cheaper than Newark Express. The fact that she doesn't know about NJ Transit (which is what everybody in NJ takes into Manhattan and is more affordable than most anything else) makes me question the accuracy of. her videos.
the cheapest way to travel from Newark Airport to NYC is to take the bus 108 to Penn Station Newark. From there you can pay a ride 2.75 $ to 33th Penn Station with a metro card.
That is an option, but depends on where you're going. If you're going to to Upper Manhattan (anywhere above 59 St. in this instance) the BX or Westchester, taking the M60 is the way to go.
When I was stranded and had to go from La guardia to Newark for my new flights, I took the Q70 to Jackson heights, got the E train to WTC, got the PATH to Newark then the 62 bus. If you have time, that is the cheapest way to Newark. You use your metrocard as normal on the subway, PATH trains take metrocards, but not the unlimited ones and The 62 bus is $1.60.

Kaiser Dal if you have two luggage’s and one carry on these options do not work and forget about it if you are traveling with a family. This only is good for Business people or someone that is traveling with one carry on.
Neon2110 hahahahahahah for business people. You said hahahahahaha omg. Thanx. No its not for business people. Cause companies cover for your expenses. ITS FOR BROKE PEOPLE. THATS ALL. dont get me wrong i ve done it many times I was BROKE
I bused and trained many of times with a carry-on and a full size bag. Everything needs to fit together and avoid over-stuffing luggage. Plus your main bag needs to have great, replaceable wheels if your going to keep it for the long haul.
The M60 also goes into Manhattan, across 125th Street and connecting with a lot of other trains - you can take it to the ABCD train and take one of those down to 42nd.
Another tip I would suggest is a shared shuttle bus ride! I've done this twice from JFK through my airline (British airways) and they provide a go air link shuttle bus which takes you straight to your hotel door! It's quite cheap, usually £15 each way or something like that so cheaper than the public bus option. Only downside in my experience is that it does take quite a long time to get there especially in traffic (could be due to the JFK location though) and I guess it can be a little 'cosy' with the other passengers but a small price to pay really and being dropped straight at your hotel door is a dream! I think all of these options in the video are great however I'm not someone who would enjoy lugging around my suitcase and trekking all over the place after a 9 hour plane ride feeling less than fresh haha! Convenience over anything!!
I'm with you on this one... been to NYC a couple of times after getting off a 20 hour flight from New Zealand the last thing I want to do is cart my luggage around on buses and trains through NYC
if i were flying into newark, i would take the airport air train to the amtrak/nj transit newark airport station and take the train into penn station. you would have to plan ahead, but amtrak is super convenient
I fly to NYC often- there’s no way I’m carrying around my luggage from plane to train. I make sure I fly into LGA and I only pay $20 to get from the airport directly to my hotel.... DIRECTLY! Use Goairlink shuttle and reserve a rideshare van. I’ve never been disappointed. You can reserve weeks in advance or days before. I use them coming and going.
LGA is now even easier and less expensive! Just do the Q70 buss (free) to the subway station. You can buy the unlimited MetroCard at terminals located just inside the door.
Newark is really the airport for northern New Jersey and Staten Island, it’s just close enough to Manhattan to make it a reasonable option if the flight is the best option
LGA to Midtown Manhattan take the Q70 (SBS) to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave/74th St. Subway Station and catch the R train to 42nd Street/Times Square station. It’s easier.
I live on the N in Brooklyn so I never thought about that option until for some reason the N wasn't running (or something) and my sister did what you suggested. One time in the middle of the night the Trip Planner told me to get to 125th st and take the M60 from there, probably because of scheduling.
An important note about the AirTrain at JFK is that some trains go to Howard Beach instead of Jamaica. Just be sure to listen to all announcements, to read all signs, and to pay attention to where your train is going. From LGA, I would just take the M60-SBS to the Lexington Ave.-125 St. station and transfer to the 4 or 5 or take it all the way to the A or D train at Saint Nicholas Ave.-125 St. From Newark, there's also NJ Transit, but that's been beaten to death in this comments section already.
You can take the Newark Air Train to the Newark Airport Train Station, which will take you directly to New York Penn Station. It's about the same price as the shuttle.
Another option from Laguardia is to take the M60 to 125th St. and St. Nicholas Av. in Manhattan and transfer to the A train, and take the A to 42nd St. or 34th St.
TY Sarah, just made it to our Hotel and had a great short walk to it w/ $1 Pizza and Carlos “Buddy” bakery on the way!! This was so much help from JFK to City Center

Sarah Funk i am going 23 december until 1january , i am from belguim and will arrive at jfk ,can i get that metrocard when i take the airtrain to ?
Btw link to the sountrack please
you can take the AirTrain to Howard Beach for the A to Lower Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn, or AirTrain to Jamaica for the E to midtown; depending on where you're staying in NYC (where's the specific cross street of the hotel)?
How can u talk about NYC escort & how not to get ripe off.... thx
Wow, thank you so much! I'm happy to help 😁
Was it easy with heavy luggage
Really??? I’ll be there for Christmas , I’m doing this transportation I hope 🤞 to do it right
@@nathananand Yeah it is easy. I do it from JFK every time I go to NYC. Except I am to cheap for the LIRR and I just take the subway straight from Jamaica station.
what if i dont have internet where to buy ticket to go to penn station ?
What about world trade center?
I'm too slow. Lol trying to figure out how to get from LGA to world trade center. It's alot of different "subways"
@@Mrbeahz1 when I use route planners they don't give this an option. Wonder why? So bus from airport to Astoria then the N or W to timesquare?x
everytime I fly into NYC it's into LaGuardia and her route it's more transfers involved if 42nd street is the end game, I take the Q70 to Jackson Heights then take the 7 train from there
Why not just take the Newark air train to the Newark airport train station and take NJ Transit to Penn station
Anthony Brusca yep, I’ve done that and it’s really convenient
That’s my mode of operation from EWR into Manhattan. Dunno why this info wasn’t presented.
Yup. That's the best way.
A fine alternative. What's the PRICE, though?
Better yet why not just take the NJ transit from Penn Station to Newark airport train station stop?!
I recently went through Newark, and took the Air Train (free) to NJ Transit, then $15.75 to Penn Station. A quick walk to the hotel, and that was it.
yeah I take the train from Newark it's cheaper and avoid traffic and all that; but good to know about this bus; always good to have options and it is only $1.50 more so a pretty good backup plan in case the train is being troublesome
Thanks for yet another nice, inexpensive alternative.
Uber had $20
you could take the nj transit train to Newark Penn station, then take the Path train to exchange place (jersey city)
from LGA you could stay on the N, W trains. they go down 7th Ave at 57th St then continue through Broadway, they stop at times sq and Harold sq (not far from Penn).
Does this work if you are going to the airport from the city?
Any trip involving the subway runs the risk of not finding elevator and/or escalators.
Because the rail is faster
Because you can afford $5 more and it's faster, more comfortable and less shitty.
that's if you are afraid of riding through east new york haha
E is express in Queens. You’re not saving much time on LIRR.
i like pizza because she’s making videos for the average lost tourist, the first timer, the one that gets scammed in every corner of the city and ends paying $20 for a free picture with Elmo in Times Square
if you're cheap and going from JFK take the subway (line E goes to Penn station) it only costs 2,75 (+1 for a metrocard if you don't have one).
New Jersey Transit is the obvious route to take from Newark to Penn Station.
*I prefer using Newark because of the airport bus. An iPhone is too hi-tech for me, so I print my tickets at home beforehand. It's easier than falling out of bed, plus you get some nice views on the way into Manhattan. Bonus*
Wellll....these are not always the cheapest options. Consider:
From JFK via Jamaica, if you get the LIRR City Ticket, then your total cost (including AirTrain) is $9, a nice savings compared to $15.25 for a peak LIRR ticket.
That makes the video all the more misleading.
For the M60 (or any select bus service) they don't take your receipt unless the passengers are being audited randomly. 99% of the time, you'll just leave it on your pocket until you get home and throw it away.
Yes true!
Basically this works perfectly well if you are going to New York City without any luggage!
I do this all the time with luggage (as do thousands of other people) and it works perfectly fine.

@@CoderShare I see people traveling with a rolling suitcase the size of a refrigerator and think unless they are moving there it's not worth it!

You forgot about the NJ Transit from Newark Airport to New York Penn $13 one way.
Yeah, she doesnt seem to know about NJ Transit.
That’s what I just took. $15 now but it was super easy and worth it.
I’m over here panicking about my very first trip to NYC tomorrow and I’m binging your videos. You’re saving me so much stress. THANK YOU.
I took subway line A from Howard Beach to Columbus Circle for 2.75 dollar after my arrival at JFK.
That's good. Can also take a taxi to Forest Hills and catch either the LIRR or get either the E or F train on Queens Blvd.
vangrails takes too long to get to manhattan. But inexpensive.
The N/Q/W trains go to directly to Times Square.
or LGA Link Q70-SBS to Roosevelt Av for the E to 42nd-PABT or F to Bryant Park/Herald Square
Kennected. 100% right. No need to make an unnecessary transfer like that when the train you are on will take you to the same place as the other train. Only thing to add to this is be aware of track work. Cause when track work fucks up your line, be careful. Go to mta.info and check to see if your line is running like it is supposed to.
can you get the train from jfk straight through to time square???
@@jonathantullin2990 Particularly on weekends.
@@latchdoorlatch996 when you get off the Air Train, take the E train instead of the LIRR
The Newark journey sounded the easiest to me! Straight on a bus, and no changing trains/ subways etc.
Yes Newark sounded the easiest to me as well.
Is it???
Superb, lucid, clear-cut, down-to-earth, brilliant narration! Thanks for the 'on-location' demos!
You can also take the Q10 from JFK to Kew Gardens and then the E or F Subway to the city center for $2.75 (but it's also the slowest option)
Just a heads up for how Peak/Off-Peak works:
If your train is scheduled to ARRIVE at Penn Station (Jamaica westbound TO Penn Station) between exactly 6:00AM-10:00AM, you must have a PEAK ticket.
Henry Black best comment🙌🏼
Thank you for sharing!
Does the 7 day unlimited metro card work in both peak and off peak? Is there any price difference?
I would like to add that the M60 bus from LaGuardia goes to Manhattan too. Since I was staying in the Upper West Side, it was very convenient for me to take this bus and go directly to the airport.
I dropped my friend off at the airtrain when she visited me in NYC. I went to leave and found out you pay as you leave. I pled my case with the woman in the booth and she let me though for free.
the most effective & less costly is from
LGA - Q70 shuttle bus - Jackson heights/Roosevelt station - then from Roosevelt station take a train that near to your destination
(You could also ride the AirTrain to Howard Beach and take the A train from there)
From JFK, I always just took the bus to Grand Central station. From there you can get to pretty much anywhere you want.
I fly into Newark and take the train to Penn Station, easy and cheap. Make sure your ticket is to New York Penn Station. Buy your ticket, use the ticket to open the gate to get on the airport train, change to the NJ Train
Went with my wife last summer. Hopped in a cab, got dropped off in front our hotel on 42nd St Cost $40.00 No fuss, no muss!
That's fine but this video is about alternatives...
@@belmundoable Sure.....pain in the ass alternatives.
Agree ......get a cab, as someone has already said the alternatives are a pain .
Taking the M60 to 125/Lexington and then taking the 4/5 train to grand central is a lot faster (and more scenic).
Total cost, please one way.
Ernest Kovach the m60 is 2.75, it’s a select bus service which is a bit different then a regular bus because you have to put your metro card inside a machine that’s near the bus stop and a receipt comes out, that receipt is your proof of payment then once you get off at 125th take the 4 train which is 2.75 to wherever you’re going
anon thanks!...so $ 5.50 one way TOTAL, right?
It builds character!
I actually went from Pennstation to Newark by train, very easy and inexpensive!
M60 bus, you need to hold on to your receipt. You don't put it anywhere. The MTA does random checks on the bus on different stops. They will fine you if you don't have a ticket. Always have your receipt ready in case they ask for it.
thank you so much for this! going to NYC for the first time and by myself. I was freaking out about the uber prices lol thank you!
Same with me Andea. We could meet up since it's our first time lol, what do you think?
A masterpiece
Great Video! I find that the Best (easiest) way from LGA is the following - Take the Q70 bus to Jackson Heights (Roosevelt - only 1 exit from airport) then take the R train to Manhattan (the R train stops at most of the pertinent Manhattan stops south of Central Park). This is the most direct way imo.
Thats the way I was shown by a native years ago. Quick and easy ride.
Uber is always a good option if you are traveling with more people
TAKE THE AirTrain TRAIN FROM NEWARK (EWR) to Penn Station in Manhattan.

An even cheaper way to get to NYC from Newark Airport is taking NJ Transit train to Penn Station NY. Currently a one-way ticket for an adult is $12.25.
Why didn’t you take the train from Newark airport. It only costs 13 dollars NJ Transit.
I just want to add that several years ago, the 7 line was extended to the West Side.
It stops at Hudson Yards. If anybody wants to go to the West Side of Manhattan, this train goes to 34th Street and 11th Avenue.
Why did you not mention The NJ Transit train from Newark to Penn Central? It is only $13 each way.
For the same reason, she thinks taking an M60 to Q to 7 is only gonna take 35 min!!
Seriously, NJT is absolutely the BEST way to get from Newark to NY Penn (from where you can literally get anywhere in the Northeast easily). And NJT is far more comfortable and quieter. That one just blew my mind.
I’m using your videos right now to travel in New York. Thank you! You have saved me so much $
Excellent video!

Most people probably use a subway card, so low chance this works and you'd look foolish/cheap. Just pay the $2.75
It does matter which airport. NEVER FLY INTO OR OUT OF LAGUARDIA. Not unless you want to spend extra hours to days in transit.
At Jamaica you can also get on the E for $2.75 and save even more, though it takes a little longer, but you can get off wherever, not just 34th-penn station.
Hi Sarah
Many thanks for this great Video
I think you forgotten the Airtrain from JFK to Howard Beach .

Nobody mentioned this, from EWR take NJT to Newark Penn, buy a ticket which is inexpensive as it is a short ride, then from Newark Penn take PATH to WTC or Penn Station for 2.75. I’ve gotten from Newark airport to Penn for 4 dollars
Would like to have been given some advice re JFK to Manhattan via train/subway
Well done! I Go into LaGuardia all the time and have never come in from JFK or Newark. But if I do now I know what I need to do!
Take NJT from Newark to NYC!!! It’s about 7 bucks a person!!! And it’s really fast and direct!!
the details are soooooooooooo helpful
I'm glad you loved it Shane Landy. I hope you subscribed (if you haven't already)! Thank you! :)
What a great video this is so helpful and so well done!!!
Thank you so much!
The fact that she doesn't know about NJ Transit (which is what everybody in NJ takes into Manhattan and is more affordable than most anything else) makes me question the accuracy of. her videos.
Just because I didn't mention something in a video doesn't mean I don't know it is exists. Don't assume things. Thanks
the cheapest way to travel from Newark Airport to NYC is to take the bus 108 to Penn Station Newark. From there you can pay a ride 2.75 $ to 33th Penn Station with a metro card.
From LaGuardia just take the Q70 bus to the subway
That is an option, but depends on where you're going. If you're going to to Upper Manhattan (anywhere above 59 St. in this instance) the BX or Westchester, taking the M60 is the way to go.
Q70 -> Jackson Heights-> F Train -> 63rd -> Q Train up or downtown! I do it every other week! :-)
I’m disabled visually impaired is the bus from Newark airport fairly easy and do you know what stop is closest to Edison time square
If ur blind how are u typing
@@kuerpotino8401 visually impaired doesn’t mean a person can’t see. She might be to a point where things such as signs which usually are printed with small letters might be hard to see for her. Also blind people can type in Braille.
@@kuerpotino8401 also there’s technology on phones now that allow blind people to have the screen read out and speech to text. So blind people can use most modern phones with no sight
Best video ever created to date for addressing the cheapest way to get to NYC Centre. Great Job!
And you gonna do all of these thing with your huge super heavy luggage ,good luck ,!
Pample Moose thats why i said GOOD LUCK!!!! Haaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaAAA!
With kids and granny too.
I bused and trained many of times with a carry-on and a full size bag. Everything needs to fit together and avoid over-stuffing luggage. Plus your main bag needs to have great, replaceable wheels if your going to keep it for the long haul.
As people have said, it's actually cheaper to do the airtrain and NJ Transit to get from EWR to NYC. Around $12.50/13 rather than $17 for the bus.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing and I hope you subscribed!
Simple, fly into JFK and take the A train from Howard Beach, or the E train from Jamaica. $2.75 for MTA, $5 for the Airtrain.
Another option from Laguardia is to take the M60 to 125th St. and St. Nicholas Av. in Manhattan and transfer to the A train, and take the A to 42nd St. or 34th St.
You’re super informative. And so hubba-hubba! 🤪
TY Sarah, just made it to our Hotel and had a great short walk to it w/ $1 Pizza and Carlos “Buddy” bakery on the way!! This was so much help from JFK to City Center
