  • This comprehensive guide will help you understand what the first and second tier garden macro-nutrients are: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Sulfur (S) and Magnesium (Mg). Perhaps more importantly, a key to success, is understanding what insoluble and soluble fertilizers are as they each have their place. And in the end I overly stress ... don't over feed your seedlings. You can over love them.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Man I’m so new to this. I am a house plant lover. I just picked up what is labeled as a All natural, soluble soil additive. It’s a powder potash. Listed at 8-1-5. Any experts out there have thoughts on this product? Any help or tips would be awesome!

This is one of the creators who is genuinely making videos to purely help others not so much for income or attention. You can tell by the painstaking time he took to put those video chapters in the description, creators make more money the longer the audience retention (not skipping over) make sure you give him a like, it takes very little effort.

Bloody brilliant garden expose’ on how, when, what and importantly, why.
Most people I meet when I’m pottering around in my vege patch openly declare they don’t have green thumbs like me.
This page has turned my desiccated brown thumbs into a verdant extravaganza of edible vegetables, most of which I give away.
And you Sir will have to live with the shared responsibility of that.
Much appreciated and shared to many…🥰😁😎

Thank You for such an in depth, honest video! Love the digital table of content and the fact that you condensed all this info into one video. Have been pulling my hair out trying to find a comprehensive fertilizing video, instead of me trying to pull useful information from multiple long videos that contain only targeted info for 1 of 2 specific plants.
Also appreciate your honesty about "chemical" fertilizing and never feel like you are trying to "sell" things to your viewers! You have been a wonderful, virtual, mentor to me as I build my container garden!!

I've been combing over your channel for the past couple days and I can't thank you enough for putting all this clear, comprehensive information out there for free. I'm sharing your videos with people too since there's really no better resource out there. I've been gardening for ten years now (only the last four very seriously) and have heard every crazy tip, trick, hack, and how-to out there but your videos cut through the hooey and explain the underlying principles. Much appreciate it and I'll definitely hit up your store soon!

You do an excellent job going into so much detail. Just a suggestion - for visual learners like me, it would be infinitely helpful to see actual live examples or at least good quality photos of some of the things you describe, such as what nutrient deficiencies look like. Especially when taking in so much information, comparing problems that have only subtle differences, not already knowing what these things look like & trying to troubleshoot by imagining by your description. Still tremendously helpful - thank you!

I commented this on another Rusted Garden video but I think it would serve more purpose posted here too. I was at Walmart today to get some fertilizer for container veggies. I compared the ingredients and ignored the name and instead of spending $5 for 4 lbs, I got an 8lb bag for $7.00! It is an organic bulb food that is 3-5-4. I plan to use it for container herbs, cucumbers, and some flowers, as well as a top dressing for some of the veggies in the garden.

Everything is a chemical but that compound changes depending on the process that chemical goes through. It reacts a different wat when it hits our waters. Also, chemical fertlizers can be washed off more easily, aiding in the creation of dead zones (waters depleted of oxygen where neither fish nor vegetarion can survive).
That idea is very very misleading.

Very good presentation and well balanced showing both organic and synthetic options. The main thing is to give the plants what it needs for optimal growth nothing more; nothing less.

Another really good source of nitrogen for your plants is rain fall from thunderstorms. The lightning creates nitrogen fixation creating nitrates and ammonia. If you've had thunderstorms recently, no need to add nitrogen. Rain and rivers are the best source of water for your plants, as most tap water plants strip out nitrates because they are bad for babies and it contain chloride. Prolonged watering with high levels of chloride inhibits plants from properly taking up nitrates, thus the need for fertilizers with soluble nitrogen.

You are probably right regarding chemical fertilizers, it's the same chemical in organic ones, but with chemical fertilizers the chance of having these direct chemicals in your food is pretty high depending on the crop, another disadvantage is that you wouldn't be helping the soil remain alive with an ecosystem of bacteria and fungi, which are necessary for long lasting soil. Organic fertilizers are not as fast acting as chemical ones, but in the long run they are probably the best option for the soil and the consumers.
I've always wondered about the cardboard tasting vegetables that we buy at the supermarket, all of them are grown with chemical fertilizers, many of them hydroponically. Is the lack of taste due to the fertilizers or the genes used?

    • @sandrajohnson9926
      @sandrajohnson9926 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I'd much rather go with organic, no matter what .

What an awesome informative video. Too much Nitrogen can make tomatoes to appear to have a calcium deficiency also. When people blindly throw calcium at tomatoes with no apparent change it’s because too much nitrogen is hampering the plants ability to use the calcium it needs.

You're a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for making this videos and giving such a good explanation of everything. It really simplifies the confusion when there's too much information from too many sources. I'll just focus on what you're suggesting and try it that way. I'm definitely the kill the plant with too much kindness (excessive watering and fertilizer) type. Your videos will help me change that

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN i appreciate your swift reply. Im just getting to explore your channel. Im still new to the botanical journey however my uncle owns a private botanical garden with 3500 species from all over the world and a herbarium with 10600 preserved plant specimens all of which are labelled with the proper taxonomic nomenclature. Based in Giza, Egypt we hold the largest collection of cultivated species in the Middle East from Morrocco to Iraq, and we have an open research exchange program with the Royal Kew Gardens of London which may culminate in a collaborative endeavour. Also, on going correspondences with Wuhan Botanic Gardens are proving fruitful. Unfortunately we lack the following:, an electronic presence + plant pathology and symptomology experience + chemical fertilizer expertise and more. Frankly our maintanance -as a whole- of the overwhelming collection we've amassed is poor, and Im looking for all the help I can get. If you dont mind i would like to be able to consult you further via youtube or email. Thank you for sharing your highly valued horticultural knowledge and experience....

This year I'm trying something different. I put a can of sardines, 1 tablespoon dried blood, 1 tablespoon Dr. Earth organic, and 1 tablespoon Miracle Grow chemical (mostly because of the calcium content) way deep in my containers, just above the water reservoir. My first feeding was 4 tablespoons of Alaska Fish fertilizer in 2 gallons of water 15 days ago, everyone looks happy. My next feeding is going to be 3 Tablespoons of the Fish and 2 TEASPOONS Miracle Grow (24-8-16)soluble, (mainly for all the trace in it) in 2 gallons of Filtered water. I got a filter for my garden hose to help remove the chlorine. Last year I starved all my plants out of ignorance, I hope they can forgive me!

After watching this, it sure seems like all macro nutrients do the same thing. Seriously. Or, rather: all are needed for everything. I love how detailed this is, but if I thought of 1/5 of all these things I would never garden again because I could never enjoy it. Maybe 10 years of practice would allow me to soak it in but in a video... damn. I think this info in a course, on the other hand, would be AMAZING. Not sure how that would be constructed...

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

The nutrients are needed for many different plant systems. You dont have to use them all. Just what you might like. Compost is king and does it all.
