10 weeks at 30 minutes a day = 35 hours on a charge is more than I have had with any previous Kindle. I can't read one 400-page book on my Oasis 2 on a single charge. Thus far, my Paperwhite 11 is lasting well on a charge. Your 1800 pages on a charge is excellent!
I appreciate this honest review. Your reactions to the Application Error screens was priceless! Hopefully Amazon fixes it with new firmware soon. Every Kindle I have owned has mysterious pauses between menus, etc., so you're not alone.
They do seem to fix issues, albeit slowly. There were two that I had on previous kindles that lasted for ages: it miscalculating reading speed and it failing to display info at the bottom of the screen. Both seem to be fixed in the most recent updates
This video was really well put together. I enjoyed seeing an actual battery drain segment. Your comparison between the Oasis and new PW was informative and makes me think the PW is the better bargain no matter which version you have. It was a small segment but what really got me excited is you showing how a left handed person like me can hold the Kindle left handed only and swipe still with my thumb!! I’ve been holding my PW4 for 6 months in my right hand because I didn’t know you could swipe in the middle of the page. That was my only gripe. I’m glad to say the swipe works just as well on the PW4 I have. Thank you
Just a short update from me after using the Kindle Signature Edition everyday since I got it on Nov 11 last year. After fully charging it on the first day and leaving WiFi and auto-brightness on, It took until Dec 28 to show 8% battery left (and started getting nagged by the Kindle to charge it). This was after using it for 30-45 minutes every day. So a conservative estimate from Amazon for 10 weeks seems pretty realistic to me (when using the device for 30 mins a day and using some power-saving settings). Mine has never crashed once and survived a dunk into a hot bath. The only criticism I have is the slow and clunky Store and the way it often crashes with an error if you try and buy a whole series at once, but this seems to be Amazon's problem and nothing to do with the Kindle itself.
Fascinating - thanks for coming back to report on that and great that it survived the dunk in the bath! I agree that the store experience is a little clunky compare to actually reading.
Yeah, I’m doubting the battery life claims. Mine was fully charged at 10p last night, been on it for 3 or 4 hours and it’s down to 67% now. And it’s brand new. I’m wondering if I really want to spend the money on the wireless charging station. I’m glad I got it, though. It’s nice to hear about a book I want to read and be able to get it immediately.
This was great! I especially liked the reading with dramatic music. Great surprise twist with the mysterious glitch. Also the thrilling slow murder of the Kindle battery was very suspenseful.
I agree that the battery lasts less than what Amazon mentions on the descriptions. I have a Kindle basic which is advertised as having a battery that lasts 4 weeks but in reality, and with my reading pace, it lasts a bit over 1 week on airplane mode and with no brightness. Of course Amazon tests their devices over a certain amount of time and with some specific settings but to be honest I read a lot too. There is no way I read only 30 minutes a day. Thank you for uploading this interesting review!
Amazon base the battery life (oddly enough on) a half hour reading per day - "A single charge lasts up to 10 weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off and the light setting at 13. Battery life will vary based on light settings and wireless usage. Audible audiobook streaming over Bluetooth will reduce battery life." One other thing I like about the new Kindle software is having the ability for the library to be group by series and ordered by series order - they way I don't have to scroll endlessly to find the next Lee Child book (or have to look up which is the next in the series). When you go into the Home screen and you see "Home" (and icon) and "Library", tapping on the icon in the middle will open your current book. Since I've had my signature edition (on launch day), I've not seen the error you had. I've also not had to charge it since day one, but then again I don't read anywhere near as much as you do! And I do make use of the wireless charging because I can't be bothered faffing with cables when I can use the same charging pad as I use for my phone.
I got the 2021 8gb version to switch from using my ipad and really like it. I only turn on the light when in the dark are very dim environment and with moderate-high amount of reading (my brother and I both have been using it for a total of between 2&8hrs a day) it has roughly 2 weeks battery. I think it would be about 4-5 weeks if you read closer to an hour a day and if you only picked it up a few times a week then it might actually last 10 weeks but not sure why such a low quantity reader would want one.
If you don't like to swipe your thumb while reading one handed with your left hand, the tap zones account for it as well. The left third of the screen is "back" while the right two thirds is forward. So as far as you were reaching, you could just tap and get the same result. With the swipe motion, you don't need to reach as far if that feels strange.
I gotta say, you’re really selling me on this gadget I will never purchase. Really! I can still appreciate how thorough and incisive this review is. And I agree: No one reads as much as you, you madman. 😂 Did the glitch ever happen again?
Isn’t that crazy that once you are showing us it started glitching 😆 That’s great battery life. I only made it to book 4 in The Wheel of Time series. 1800 pages 😲 I agree, most people don’t read as much as you. It sounds like a nice kindle. Thanks for the review 😊
Yeah, I was totally amazed when it glitched like that but thought it was worth leaving in. It’s been absolutely fine since then. I’m really enjoying the first Wheel of Time book, but not sure if I’ll manage the whole series!
@@CriminOllyBlog They unfortunately go downhill in my opinion. The first handful were very excellent though. Great reviews on the new Paperwhite. I should have one under the tree this year. I can’t wait.

The only solution has been to get it replaced from Amazon. Now I'm afraid it will happen again.
You should be able to set what side the page turn works on. So left-handed people can invert the page turn to be on the left side of the screen. These settings are in the Page Turn Settings. I have the original Oasis, if my old Kindle has those settings I'm pretty sure that the new Kindles have it. Thanks for the review. As soon as it goes back on sale I'm getting the Paperwhite!
I'm what you'd consider a kindle "power user". I don't just read fiction and non-fiction on there, I also sideload textbooks and required reading for studying. I use the wi-fi quite often and use the kindle to take down notes and study. Technically, my kindle's running for several hours in a day + battery drain from wifi use. I thought I got a dud that drains too fast lol. Thanks for the review!
Which would you recommend for only reading books. No manga, comics, pdfs, textbooks. Just books from the library or kindle unlimited? Kindle Paperwhite 8gb, 16gb, or signature edition? Also, is the SE screen the same crispness as the standard?
Hello, I just purchased my first Kindle PaperWhite and I have a question. When you’re not using the Kindle, should you hold the power button to turn the screen off or leave it on the wallpaper?
I enjoyed your kindle reviews. They’re offering a unique test and review beyond many others. Well done. Couldn’t help but notice your neat watch too. Ever consider watch reviews?
Thank you! It’s been interesting doing them because it’s so different from reviewing a book. I have thought about doing watch reviews as I have a fair few of them!
Considering between the new paper white or the oasis 3. My concern is a lot of people say the new paper white is not comfortable to hold and the oasis 3 having the side button real estate is more comfortable and prevents accidental page turning. Which one do you prefer?
I do really like the page turn buttons on the Oasis, but I do actually fine the Paperwhite easier to hold. I haven't had any issues with accidental page turns.
Kindle battery life numbers are inflated, to put it mildly. If you barely use it, turn most of the features off (little details like the backlight), and squint really hard, it might get near what Amazon is advertising. In reality, they suck power and you might get 30 hours out of them. Now, I'm basing my numbers on reading off and on about 8 hours a day, backlight at about 50%, and the wifi off. This is typical of my Kindle Voyage, which is still soldiering on, but getting pretty tired. I've got a new Paperwhite on order, so we'll see how that goes, but I expect it'll be six of one, half a dozen of another.
Hope you enjoy the Paperwhite when it arrives. I never tried the Voyage but I did like the design of it. It feels like now Amazon might just do the basic Kindle and the Paperwhite and bin off the more niche models like the Voyage and Oasis. Thanks for watching.
Great review! I loved your raw opinions of the kindle. I am gonna buy my first kindle and I think I might be leaning towards the newer paperwhite rather than the oasis. The pricing is more or less the same where I live between the two products. The faster depleting battery life would give me anxiety if I opt for oasis but I really like the looks of it, only if they had an updated oasis with same or better battery life as the paperwhite. I can only charge so many gadgets in my life. Have you switched fully to the paperwhite or do you still use your oasis? And do you miss the buttons to turn the page? Keep up the good work, cheers :)
Thanks Gaurav! Really glad you found the video useful. I honestly haven't missed the buttons when using the Paperwhite and I haven't yet picked up the Oasis instead of it. I would definitely recommend the Paperwhite as the better overall device.
Thank you so much for your review! It was quite helpful and I have decided to purchase the new Paperwhite even though, like you, I currently already own an Oasis 3. I intend to use the Paperwhite mostly for taking out to school, work, etc. while still using the Oasis primarily at home. It will be interesting to see if it plays out that way, or if maybe I will prefer the Paperwhite in all situations and just use the Oasis when I leave the other device at work (it happens too often lol). You seem nice and I like you!
I have a borrowed Paperwhite. I THINK it’s a 2018. The battery life, reading about 2 hours a day at most, is 2 days, maybe 3. Obviously the battery is quite worn out. I bought a Paperwhite Signature edition (2021) and it’s coming tomorrow. Definitely looking forward to multiple weeks of battery life, even if it isn’t quite 10. :D
What real reader would only commit thirty minutes a day to reading? When I got my first Paperwhite Kindle six years ago it boasted this long battery life but neglected to mention the 30 minute a day limitation and I wondered why I was not getting as long a charge as promised. Mystery solved. It was all marketing BS. But it is a minor quibble and I do most of my reading on my Kindle. I need to charge it perhaps every two or three days depending upon usage, some days are more productive than others.
I still have the original Paperwhite from 2012, still just as good as new, It has an almost worn out leatherette cover that has protected it well/ I have now bought a new 2021 Kindle which is only millimetres larger. THe bigger screen is an improvement and the warm light is easier on the eye.The original has 2Gb, the new one has 8Gb, I can;t see the need for 32Gb. To me there is little point in the illustration of the book covers instead of the list in the original and can see no sense in wireless charging, The USB-C is a big improvement over the original micro USB
It definitely killed mine! Good book though. And the kindle hasn’t had any other weird glitches since I filmed that, but felt like the right thing to do to leave it in
@@CriminOllyBlog I agree about leaving the glitches in the video. I will get a signature paperwhite if they ever go on sale. I have checked every day for Black Fridays and Cyber Monday, but alas, no sale. I assume it is because they already can't keep up with inventory stock.
@@michaelreed649 yeah I think the regular one went on sale but think the Signature Edition is out of stock so guess there is no push for them to discount it
@@CriminOllyBlog Yes, that is what I saw as well. You have used Kindles a lot. I should ask you about the storage. I use audiobooks a lot, I also plan to use my Kindle for required reading for school. Plus I am an avid reader. That said, I do not get much time to read my own books. Could you guess the capacity of the 8 GB version for a 50/50 split between Audiobooks and novel size books? Also, how intrusive are the Ads vs Ads Free? That difference of $85 is making me question my Need (vs want) of the Signature model (vs the on-sale version)
@@michaelreed649 Audiobooks take up a LOT more space than kindle books (like 50 times as much). I reckon you would get about 50 of each on an 8gb kindle if you had an even split. The ads aren’t too bad - I think you can pay to get them removed at any point if they bug you too much
You gained a new subscriber! Fantastic review… few questions are you reading the majority of your books on kindle? I can’t decide if I want to go from paper to kindle or not. How many books can you fit on the 32gb version? I think the smaller one might be enough for me… is the new kindle PW your favorite eReader ?
Fantastic, thank you! I think I’m about 50/50 between paper and kindle. I think I prefer the tactile nature of reading paper books but the kindle is still a joy to read off and very convenient. The smaller Kindle will hold hundreds of books. I have over 1,500 regular books and some comics and audiobooks (which take up more space) and even then it’s only just worth me having the larger one really.
very brave to let the kindle deplete. i have had 2 that would not recharge from battery dead. So i always keep it charged. Its a known issue , which i had on the Kindle 3 & 4. hoping the 5 does not have this. thanks for the review.
I really wish Amazon would pay more attention to these problems. My Paperwhite goes wonky like this regularly. I’ve had the current one for about four years now, and your newer version doesn’t seem any faster or have any good new features.
I have a Kindle Paperwhite, but much prefer using my old Amazon Fire 7 tablet, and even my chromebook for reading. I have a hard time understanding why the Paperwhite gets such glowing reviews.
I understand why we never get amazing processors in a kindle. But a slightly better processor could fix speed issues when accessing menus. I always wanted a larger screen. I do mot read as much as you but I am waiting for the deals before buying one.
I know what you mean about the processor. Reading is fine, but doing anything else can feel a bit sluggish. I would love to see a Kindle with a folding screen to give a bigger reading area without making the device itself huge.
Lol. Yeah. I’m terms of the 10 days of battery life. All ebook readers I’ve found advertise days of life based on very limited reading time rather than actual hours. Very misleading if you don’t read the fine print. So be careful to look for what math they used to cobble together the days of advertised battery life before purchasing any brand of e reader.

To me there is little point in the illustration of the book covers instead of the list in the original and can see no sense in wireless charging, The USB-C is a big improvement over the original micro USB
Yeah I really do like the larger screen, it doesn’t sound like a big difference on paper but it really does make it nicer to read on.
Wheel of Time will kill any battery.
Lol
FYI, i gave a like and subscribe when i saw you Didn't edit out the restarts. I like the unedited version.
The ads aren’t too bad - I think you can pay to get them removed at any point if they bug you too much
I charged mine with the cable then using wireless. The wireless charging made the battery die out sooo much quicker than the cable.
Yeah it does charge way faster with the cable
@@CriminOllyBlog Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the reply
How many hours would you say you read over those 10 days?
Gosh, hard question to answer. About 50 maybe?
The battery claim is based on you reading 30 minutes a day. Which works out to being 35 hrs or so
Yeah that sounds not massively different from what I got overall
you can also turn pages by swiping right or left anywhere!
Ooooh! Thank you! I’ll give that a try.
very brave to let the kindle deplete. i have had 2 that would not recharge from battery dead. So i always keep it charged. Its a known issue , which i had on the Kindle 3 & 4. hoping the 5 does not have this. thanks for the review.
I didn’t know that! I’ll bear it in mind for the future. Thanks for watching
Amazon's claim is based on 30 minutes a day, 13 level brightness, with Wi-Fi off and Bluetooth off.
Yeah, 30 mins a day is never going to be enough for me :)
@@CriminOllyBlog Me either. I read all the time
Cool channel! How many books do read in a month? Gonna subscribe to your channel.
Thank you! It varies depending on what I’m reading, but November was 20 which is probably about average.
I really wish Amazon would pay more attention to these problems. My Paperwhite goes wonky like this regularly. I’ve had the current one for about four years now, and your newer version doesn’t seem any faster or have any good new features.
Yeah they do often seem more interested in releasing new devices than fixing bugs
Turn on airplane mode. On my kindle voyage if I leave it connected to wifi it won't last a week
This advice is only good if you never use Whispersync and if you aren’t a Kindle Unlimited member.
8GB holds about 3,000 books
Thanks Heather
I have a Kindle Paperwhite, but much prefer using my old Amazon Fire 7 tablet, and even my chromebook for reading. I have a hard time understanding why the Paperwhite gets such glowing reviews.
Really? I guess everyone is different, but I much prefer reading on an e-ink screen.
Interesting. I do wonder if their “average reader” is someone who reads enough to justify buying a kindle 😂
Pfft I get 50 hours out of my kobo Clara hd
I do like the look of some of the Kobos (and in fact I have a Kobo mini somewhere) but I’m so deep in the Amazon ecosystem now I don’t think I could switch
@@CriminOllyBlog I’ve got an old kindle 3rd gen keyboard just replaced battery in it
I bought the kobo so I can use overdrive and borrow from the library which kindle won’t allow outside of the US oh and the back light is so nice to have after using the old one .
@@W3TFART I’ve got an old kindle keyboard too. The screen has gone though, which is a shame as I really like the form factor
Instead of calling this a review maybe it should be called, 'my learning curve'. You rambled too much, went off on mini tangents, laboured points, missed out great features. Oh, and you blamed the kindle for the error message, which was actually you totally messing up.
I take the points about my style of presenting (horses for courses), but how was the error message me messing up?
10 weeks the exact Value. Because that 180 pages in a week is absolutely realistic. 180 pages in a week is not a small amount, it is a lot in fact.
