  • Hello, this is DGSpitzer!
    I used a series of AI to restore a video from 90 years ago!
    This short documentary with sounds was published on 10/4/1929, probably filmed around 1927-1929.
    Hope you enjoy it!
    The footage is provided by University of South Carolina's Moving Image Research Collections, thanks MIRC for their support!
    Special thanks to the new AI project 'DeepRemaster', created by Satoshi Lizuka & Edgar Simo-Serra. I used their technology for the musicians' band part~
    Addtionally used DAIN, DeOldify, and Topaz for restoration.
    And also thanks to CCTV~
    Here is the detail information about the footage:
    Fox News outtake 4-786 copyright University of South Carolina.

    The most incredible thing to me... Is how relatable that conversation that boy had with the barber to this day. Thinking about it, I know it's silly. But when you look at mere photos, everyone looked so serious and distant. Seeing these films remind me that these people had their joys and humanity. They aren't just caricatures. Not just the posed smiles for the camera, or victims of the horrors of famine and war. We are still the same.

    • @rian534
      @rian534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Marian Rodu Globalism is obviously not a bad thing, especially if one of it’s supposed major side effects is something like boring clothing. I think the problem is with trends probably. I’d assume if lots of people started wearing traditional clothes from their countries other people would likely jump in and start doing it too. I think it has more to do with this than globalization and freedom, though those are also obviously contributing factors. The problem is that you stand out too much from the crowd and will probably get weird stares if you wore traditional clothing in a crowd of people wearing modern clothes, and vice versa

    Wow, this is so awesome! Even their dialog is more or less the same as what a customer and a barber would talk about today. The more of these old videos I watch, it really goes to show me that fundamentally, people haven't changed at all. We have new technology, but at the end of the day humans are mostly concerned about their family, friends, their work, having fun, etc, etc.
    I think reading about history in textbooks gives us a very distorted view of history. Once you can see and hear people interacting 100 years ago it's kinda like oh okay, they're pretty much exactly the same as we are today!

      Even looking back, it is hard to grasp how much the world have changed since then. Remember: in 1929, Fleming had just discovered the penicillin, ushering the age of antibiotics and allowing humanity to, in a matter of years, being able to easily cure deadly contagious diseases that plagued us for millennia. The DNA would be identified properly decades later (let alone easily edited, which only happened almost a century later). And they still didn't have FM radio, jet engines, microwaves, radars, and even the ubiquitous ballpoint pens. Of course I won't even start talking about computers as the basics of transistors were still being figured out...
