I think what also is very important regarding counting: if you would record anyone counting to 10 and put it in a DAW you will quickly notice that they are exactly on beat. This realization about the connection of language and timing was a game changer for me. That’s why I often practice and I only count 1, 2, 3 etc. without „and“, „es“ and such, while trying to speak very clearly and accurate to trick my brain. It’s seems basic, but understanding why and not just because your drum teacher told you to count loud is really helpful. Timing is already ingrained in your brain you just need to find where.
