Old imperialism, the switch over to smokeless gunpowder and reluctance to adapt to change. The same thing happened to UK who were still wearing scarlett during the Boer war and end up switching to khaki due to the heavy casualties being inflicted upon them.
My great Grand Father did Verdun, from a regiment of 3000 mens, only 5 survived, he was among those 5, he even made German prisoners,... and it got me thinking, how you can live and fight in a nightmare, seeing your fellow soldiers and close friends butchered in mass, and still spare your ennemies life when you could ? ... As a kid, i remember in school when we studied WWI and WWII, many other kids had Grand Fathers and Great Grand Fathers mentioned for heroïc actions in battles with official letters, old news papers relating battles with names etc.

My grandfather would probably have fought in the war and likely at verdun. I'm lucky that he moved to sweden at the start of the war as he was 19 when the war started and would likely have been drafted.
nahiag Great. Many would call him a coward, but I don’t. I doubt many people would truly want to become part of the worst war in history if they had the choice.
@Mosquito Creations well, the view of the world was pretty medieval in that regard, war was just part of the natural world from their view and it was your duty to enlist and gain honor and glory for your nation (and yourself), plus this was the first real test of mass warfare the world had witnessed. Hopefully, we have learnt something about those violent times and are able to move to a more peaceful era
Fun fact : the Christmas truce happened because a band of unnamed Swedish men in camo pants played a metal concert so hard that both sides forgot they were fighting a war
@Juan Noreikat Of course the French never surrender. Moreover, the Germans retreated in Verdun, not the French, so if you wanna be accurate you have to make the German's commander say : "shit retreat"
How is ww1 the forgotten war? I’d say the most ignored war for its influence would be the seven years war, the second Punic war or the Franco Prussian war.
My grandfather fought in Verdun. He was 17 years old. When he went to enlist, the recruiting officer said no, too young and too skinny. My grandfather went two other times and was refused. He went once again. The officer said: you want to go, then go! And it was Verdun...he was wounded but fortunately not too seriously and finished the war safely.
I'm German and Patriotic, My Great Great Grandfather fought in the German Side of Verdun, yet even so I have a lot of Respect for the French Defenders as well. It was actually pretty smart (Not the red pants tho). When you step out of a trench to attack, from the angle of your ennemy in front of you what's behind you is the blue skyline. Also during long battles gunsmoke would eventually be everywhere ... And back in the days the gunsmoke was light blue. So in the end the blue uniform was a pretty good camouflage appart from being the most fashionable outfit of the great war.

In Verdun, more than 50 million shells were used in 10 months, 6 shells per square meter. It is more than the French population of the time. And yet these words are written in letters of blood in history: Verdun 1916, french victory.
A quick little fact: In the lyrics it says "A million shells were fired". This is actually true, the German artillery bombardment of Verdun on the first day had over a million shells fired and remains one of the largest artillery barrages in history.
As a history buff and a metalhead, THIS is my all time favorite band. Theses dudes have helped me through so much. Thanks Sabaton. If you see this, know that you are the world's best storytellers.
If you go to Verdun today there are many French and German troops killed during this battle who are unaccounted for since their remains were never recovered which is a sad reminder of how much France payed the price during both World Wars 1 & 2.
@Rage virus and zombification are 2 diverse concepts right, if I ever become a history teacher im going to use sabaton songs in the lessons. Not those gay ass teacher parodies they usually show
Sugárzó Palacsinta Good fathers are very invested in their children's success. In my country, when the 18 year old high-schoolers take the exams to enroll to a university, the entire families are 100% behind them. Pushing them all year, helping them cope with the enormous stress, preventing them from slacking off. When a student gets accepted to the university of their choice, the family members say "We did it!" or "We passed! (the exam)", instead of "He/She..." So, it is very fitting actually. When the son falls, the father falls with him.
It really angers me when i see people mocking the french as cowards (no nation that produces soldiers that held the line at places like verdun and the somme etc should EVER be called cowards) France can trace its origins as far back as gaul in the roman era, for the last 1000 years they've been one of the strongest, most advanced countries on the planet... you dont become that by surrendering, they have been in hundreds of wars and, like most countries have won and lost some of those wars. During the battle of France the french suffered from an enemy inventing modern warfare as they went and bungled leadership, not because their soldiers were cowards. The thing that bothers me most though is hundreds of thousands of french soldiers died fighting (not surrendering to) the nazis yet they are called cowards. If someone thinks its funny to mock those dead french soldiers i invite them to go up to an american vietnam/iraq war veteran and call them a coward (we lost those two wars), tell them that their friends who died were also cowards. I really dont understand why people think its okay to mock soldiers who died fighting against the nazis.....
The reason the meme came around (I don't know where it officially came from) but one of them was a guy who posted a meme on r/history memes and the meme had a list of times the French surrendered (which was false by the way) and everyone took it as fact It's a bit like the thing where they say you can see the Great Wall of China from space, it's just not true and know one knows why it came around
@@corvus2512 probably because of the republic of Vichy. I know that France is a great state and has a good army, but they had quite not so brilliant generals. The Maginot line did not cover the entire front and the battle of the Somme... well again mistakes were made. I'm Italina so i understand how immportant is france, we won the wars thank to them too. And we got our history of violence between us too, but I respect that.
@@lorenzomariasantini the french lost the battle of france, as you pointed out, because of the incompetence of their generals and the reluctance of their politicians... not the bravery of their soldiers... i just dont know why some people think its okay to mock soldiers who died fighting nazis. Speaking of Italians did you watch “the great war” Indy used to host about WW1? I was totally ignorant of the Italian front against the austro hungarias.... the italian mountain troops in particular were awesome to learn about!
@@winchelseabeach4863 you are probably right, i remember that meme about googling french military victories and google asking if you meant “defeats”... i saw an article written about that meme in particular that actually listed all the french military campaigns since the 100 years war and the percentage of those the french won (it was over 50%). Apparently the writer of that article was bothered (like myself) by the historical revisionism of france. I suppose its futile to actually be annoyed by it, the people who believe those memes are also people who most likely think “if its on the internet it must be true, they don't let just anyone put something online!” You cant convince people like that of anything lol

As a french person whose most of the family is located around Verdun with a lot of past family members having gone to Verdun this song hits right at heart. You may hear how horrible it was at school but you cant really even grasp how it was until you come visit the reconstruction of trenches during a rainy day. And even then, youd have to imagine it 10 times worse to maybe start feeling how bad it was

nahiag Great.

My grandfather fought in Verdun. He was 17 years old. When he went to enlist, the recruiting officer said no, too young and too skinny. My grandfather went two other times and was refused. It was actually pretty smart (Not the red pants tho). When you step out of a trench to attack, from the angle of your ennemy in front of you what's behind you is the blue skyline. Lyrics:
As the drum roll started on that day, heard a hundred miles away
A million shells were fired and the green fields turned to grey
The bombardment lasted all day long, yet the forts were standing strong
Heavily defended, now the trap has been sprung and the battle has begun
Descend into darkness
303 days below the sun
[Chorus]
Fields of Verdun
And the battle has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Under the gun
Thy will be done
And the judgement has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Fields of Verdun
Though a million shells have scarred the land, no one has the upper hand
From the ground above to trenches, where the soldiers make their stand
As the trenches slowly turn to mud, and then quickly start to flood
Death awaits in every corner, as they die in the mud, fill the trenches with blood
Descend into darkness
303 days below the sun
[Chorus]
Fields of Verdun
And the battle has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Under the gun
Thy will be done
And the judgement has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Fields of Verdun
Fields of execution turned to wasteland from the grass
Thou shalt go no further it was said they shall not pass
The spirit of resistance and the madness of the war
So...
Go ahead!
Face the lead!
Join the dead!
Though you die!
Where you lie!
Never asking why!
Descend into darkness
303 days below the sun
[Chorus]
Fields of Verdun
And the battle has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Under the gun
Thy will be done
And the judgement has begun

Good fathers are very invested in their children's success. (the exam)", instead of "He/She..."
So, it is very fitting actually. When the son falls, the father falls with him.

Everyone: French surrender memes
Sabaton:
The reason the meme came around (I don't know where it officially came from) but one of them was a guy who posted a meme on r/history memes and the meme had a list of times the French surrendered (which was false by the way) and everyone took it as fact
It's a bit like the thing where they say you can see the Great Wall of China from space, it's just not true and know one knows why it came around
@@corvus2512 probably because of the republic of Vichy. I know that France is a great state and has a good army, but they had quite not so brilliant generals. The Maginot line did not cover the entire front and the battle of the Somme... well again mistakes were made.

@@lorenzomariasantini the french lost the battle of france, as you pointed out, because of the incompetence of their generals and the reluctance of their politicians... not the bravery of their soldiers... i just dont know why some people think its okay to mock soldiers who died fighting nazis.
