Americans have been programmed to think that time off and breaks equate to laziness or not wanting to strive for more. Ironically those that have structured their lives to have more free time to enjoy family, friends and travel have figured out how to better succeed in life. Sure having a bunch of stuff is nice but how much time will you have to work to support that lifestyle. Isn't freedom something that we talk about in America yet all we do is work? Where is the freedom in that?

I am 65 years, eleven months and 31 days as of my comments. Being retired was the best thing I did. Being self-employed with two businesses doing lawn service and an audio, video, music, photo, data technology services allowed me to not take bullshit off employers. Getting up every morning was very pleasant thing to do knowing I am providing great service for others being positive and beautiful. The worst part of being self-employed is not knowing my true value pricing fees. In spite of not getting rich, the work gave me peace, joy and time to be still doing hobbies I been doing since a little girl. Now that I am retired and spending time alone, many thoughts of my past experiences allow me to be thankful, grateful for the various paths I’ve been on and through. If I had to redo and relive my life with what I now know, I would first start with making sure I would want to keep it seriously simple aka KISS. I appreciate spending time with my grandchildren. It gives me moments to see them live, grow up, do their thing. With all of the rules and regulations I grew up in and around, my grandchildren talk to me to let me know that it is ok to not be perfectly matched wearing clothes, socks, shoes, etc.. It brings me great joy to be able to remind them to do personal hygiene without spending lots of money on expensive, name brands. Watching TH-cam videos allows me to see people, places and things all from the comfort of my residence without having to spend lots of money getting into debt traveling around the world. Having credit score in the low 800’s and having money saved makes me think as to how to utilize it for the betterment of whatever and whomever. Taking time to think to continue take care of myself is of utmost importance. Being mentally and physically able-bodied these days and times is a blessing. To God be the glory for being with me and for me keeping me safe from harm. Having strength from God is also a blessing. The breathing abilities waking up each day is plenty gratitude. Thanks for reading my comments. Smiles

I did this in 2020 and I'm still on a break. After experiencing childhood trauma and toxic relationships, it was the best decision I ever made. This break allowed me to start my healing process, have a spiritual awakening and to finally let go of past trauma and depression. Timothy is right. You deserve to put yourself first. Take that time off. Travel. Isolate yourself for a while. Move away from toxic people. GO FOR IT!

Hey Tim! I completely agree. I have designed my life in such a way that I can quit anytime I want. I am an English teacher in Japan. No student loans, no credit card debt, no mortgage. Nothing. I often tell people that I have designed my life so that I only work jobs that I enjoy. If I don't like my job I dash. Fortunately I love my job and have no stress. I have a 20 minute walk to work and don't need a car so my cost of living is super low. I have been saving money for years so I could take several years off if I want. Hah hah hah I only work because I like my job.

@@RobertSmith-jd6wb no, you don't. We choose to work ourselves silly, but it's not required. I know for me, working myself half to death has never actually brought about better circumstances so that I could afford something. I'll give a very recent example from my own experiences.
My [now ex] partner / roommate / business partner and I moved into a new place roughly 6 months ago. It is absolutely better than where we were living in every way - big yard with privacy fencing so we and our dogs can enjoy the outdoors in peace and safety, enough distance between this house and the neighbors to feel like there's actual privacy, NO carpet (only beautiful hardwood floors that make keeping the house clean and fresh-smelling so much easier), a huge garage & bonus room on the bottom level, a beautiful old neighborhood full of trees and nature with NO HOA, close to the commercial space we lease for our business (the old place was more than an hour away), no need to get on the interstate for most of what we need, lots of hiking trails nearby and the mountains not that far away, within 30 minutes of my sister's home, traffic isn't terrible, and the list of positives goes on. Only thing is, it's $500 more per month than the place we used to live. But with both of us working we could manage it.
Fast-forward to about a month ago, he starts acting weirder than he ever has. He would go to work or an event or to hang out with people and not come back for days at a time. When he eventually did rage out about it, he blamed it on our dogs (saying he was tired of them always barking and taking over his life, even though they don't actually bark that much and I was the one caring for them 95% of the time because I work from home) and he blamed it on me for not wanting to rehome them. Then a few days later he made up some BS story about going hiking with "friends" and completely disappeared for pretty much 2 weeks. During that time he didn't communicate, didn't send any financial support for the bills or house maintenance or dogs - nothing. I made the decision that he needed to move out. He has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and I'm just tired of dealing with the emotional (and occasionally physical) abuse after 9 years. Getting him.out has been an entire ordeal in itself, but now I'm responsible for the entire rent amount as well as all of the utilities, groceries, care for the dogs etc. I make $2,400 a month, and now I'm looking at having to pay $1,950 for the rent alone by myself. That would only leave me $450 for power, water gas, internet, trash, groceries, dog food, gas for my SUV and the lawn mower, and anything else I need. Sounds like the kind of situation where I should be picking up another job or 2, right?
Actually, nope. When we work until we're beyond exhaustion, there's no energy left for the kind of creative thinking that could help to pull us out of a situation like this. If I went out and found another job or 2, I might be able to afford this place more comfortably, but I'd literally never have the time or energy to enjoy the place I'm working so hard to afford. And I'd never have the energy to sit down and figure out how to work smarter rather than harder. I'd just be in this cycle of work, fast food, and sleep, with barely any time or energy to clean, wash my clothes, spend with my dogs, or make healthier choices.
So instead, I'm developing a plan that will help me work smarter rather than harder. This plan includes developing multiple streams of income from related / overlapping ventures. My business (which the ex has been legally removed from) is a regenerative farm, and I'm a farmer. So on the basic side of things, I'll be bringing in income from the food I produce on the farm. But why not start a TH-cam channel to help teach others about what I do? And why not recommend good quality products, books, feed etc that I use on the farm every day and earn commission from those recommendations? Why not design a few shirts and hats people can purchase to support the farm? If I already have a flock of chickens and I'm selling eggs for people to eat, why not also sell eggs people can hatch themselves, or baby chicks or breeding adult chickens people can purchase to start their own homesteads or farms? Why not create a couple of interactive online courses to teach certain aspects of regenerative farming in more detail?
If I worked myself to death out of fear of not being able to afford this place on my own, I'd never have the time or energy to build out all of these streams of income. I probably wouldn't have had the energy to even think up the ideas for them. And I know these ideas are very specific to what I do, but they're just meant to be examples. Find something you love that doesn't feel like the bad kind of work, then take some time to sit down and figure out a few different ways you can make money from it. The wonderful thing about social media is that you can find a community of people who are interested in almost everything under the sun. So somewhere out there is a community willing to watch videos, read articles, listen to podcasts, and buy stuff around your interest. You just have to take the time to think it out so you can do and get more from less effort. And yeah, it might take a while to get your ideas going if you work full-time or have to save up for certain things. But in a LOT of cases, you can sit down in front of your phone, press record, and talk about something you have a lot of knowledge and / or passion about just like Tim and so many others do. Some of the best and most popular channels out there are just talking head videos. It's just them and a phone, talking about life or finances or how to do something or vlogging their travels. And starting a channel can lead to other ways to build out your multiple streams of income. Being a TH-camr or influencer is not necessarily for everybody, but it's definitely one of the fastest and easiest things you can start that has the potential to really set you up well. Start slowly if that's all you can do, but figure out how to combine related ideas to start bringing in more income from less effort. I'd MUCH rather spend my days at home working this way than killing myself working for companies that don't give a crap about me.

@@PraveenSrJ01 I get it, and if you're busy or something I get not having much time to read a longer comment. Most of the time if I feel the need to respond to something, it's not a short post. I'm not sure when, but somehow people began to connect the internet and social media with the idea that only quick responses are valid, and any "long" response isn't valid or worth the time to read or is preaching or whatever. I feel like this has contributed to reduced connection with others. If I spoke that comment out loud it would fit right into a normal conversation. It would probably only take a minute tops (probably less) if I read it out loud. If you viewed it on a larger screen it wouldn't take up an entire page, but we've all been trained to accept and tolerate less in terms of communication.
Either way, hope it helps give someone food for thought. 😊

I agree completely Timothy. Probably 40years ago I was working on an intense project for a company. Everything we had created was about to be shipped cross country, and upon my request to the company I worked for said I could take 3 weeks off. It was an incredible adventure. Change my life forever.
Took off in car to visit friends halfway across the country with no schedule or plans. Camped off desert side roads and took a turn up a dirt road onto a native American reservation, where I received permission to be one of a few hikers allowed to visit. Walked barefoot through a stream with backpack on and camera available.
Arrived late in evening and was assigned a place to camp and told to all meet by our native guide, who was a graduate of Berkely and now park ranger.
We met to celebrate the solstice in an underground space with hot rocks and steam. Our guide sang and chanted in native tongue. Next day climbed up ladders up to an ancient cliff dwelling and received an amazing blessing. Quite a spiritual experience. Came back with new incites... a big boost in creativity, and all work became much more fun. Will never forget the experience. 3 weeks was enough.

I've been off for 1yr and a few months now. I will say that at first I lost apart of my identity because I've been working since I was 15 and I'm 34 now.. So down time was hard in the beginning, i also felt guilty and even lied to ppl about my work schedule etc. Now, I preach it.. We really only live once on this side and why waste it stressing (silent killer) or trying to make a better life for everyone else but ourselves..

I am definitely interested in this. I do not believe we are meant to work our whole lives. I will say, having an easier job when I was teaching in Asia was nice. Lots of breaks and time away from work. Gives you time to see life differently. I do not believe in the constant “grind”. Our bodies are not meant to keep grinding every day (especially women). We all need rest, mentally, physically, and emotionally.

When I was 35, the company I worked for was sold and we all received pretty large "pay and stay" bonuses to remain throughout the transition. My family wanted me to save that, invest it, etc. But as I had been working since I was 15, I wanted something better. I took a year off. Studied things that intrigued me, woke naturally every morning, wrote stories, visited my favourite diner and sat on the covered patio in the rain, watching the world go by. It was glorious. I'm 53 now and don't regret it one iota. To this day, I take time off anytime I can. I'm incandescently happy not working. Boredom baffles me. And so many friends and family members said they could never take that much time off, citing boredom or a need to do things, lol. I did things every day. I bought fresh produce, made lovely meals because I had the energy every day, I did so much but some of the best days were when I did very little, or nothing. But I was alive, and present, and it was GLORIOUS.
Take time off whenever you can. And don't schedule the day, or look to fill the time.

You're 100% right Tim. Blessings sent from the U.K. Many years ago I was working in a job with so many negative people and 'spiritual vampires'. A friend of mine said "Do you wanna join me and cycle down the PCH from Seattle to Los Angeles? He then put a map on my coffee table. After some hesitation I shook his hand and said 'Yes'! - I handed in my notice from my job. We had a leaving party in a local pub and got on a flight to Seattle with our bikes and backpacks on board. It was a Life changing experience! We stayed in hostels, camped in fields and on the beach. I met So, So many people, great conversations, friends and memories made. I remember having a feeling of TRULY living and experiencing life! I hope someone will take encouragement from your video and take the break they truly deserve.

One of the many memories was setting up a tent on Leo Carrillo State Beach and at night, making a pillow out of the sand and waking up to see 'glowing lights' in the ocean. It was just incredible! I found out it's called bioluminescence a rare natural phenomena. Btw, the bike that I used to ride over a thousand miles, (a Kona Cinder Cone) I eventually sold to an American Lady at a hostel in West Hollywood... I'd love to know where that bike is now! 🤔😊

Honestly, it hasn't been easy and I'm still figuring it out but taking this time to ramp up my self care, slow down, work different (self employed, flexible schedule, part time, etc) has been such a blessing! Even if I do have to go back to being a wage slave, it'll be different. I'm rested, empowered and eyes wide open now! Can't go backwards! Still not sure what my next step is. Trying to calm myself and have the confidence to take a minute to relax and release, rather than following the nervous instinct of taking the first possible job I can find.

My man... So, when 2023 began, I outright walked out of my job. Just told my boss "I'm done. Just mail my check." It was a HUGE risk. The following six months were filled with prospects I only dreamed of during my 'time off.' I looked into business, put my writing skills out there, began my animation journey and FINALLY started a youtube channel. Despite all that, I've made absolutely no money from it, and I know it's time to get back to work.
    To whom it may concern;

I'd definitely want to continue with this dialogue. I've been tossing this idea around for the past 3 years! I actually took a 2 month sabbatical and it was great. I wish it was something I could do every year, but 3 months would be the sweet spot. We have new management now and it's unlikely that will be permitted again. However, I have the cash in the bank to be able to comfortably take that 3 months. It's so difficult to make that decision and let go of a good paying remote job but damn does it feel so liberating, envisioning myself pulling the trigger. Part of my hesitation is because I lack the confidence in finding another job because I am horrible at interviews!
I am at the point though, that I wouldn't mind working a seasonal job doing something completely different just to reset my mind. I might feel some remorse when finally making that decision but I also risk regret for not making that decision. Also, as you mentioned, I do feel like my identity has been associated with work all these years. I've been questioning who I really am a lot lately. Something is off and sometimes I attribute it to depression, anxiety.
Curious if others who do this, pay for health insurance out of pocket during this sabbatical or just wait until they get back into the workforce?

When I turned 50 years old I took my entire year off it was a 50-year jubilee. Every six years I take a sabbath year of rest. It's all about the budget.

That's marveslous! I took a year off at 35. I'm 53 now and haven't since then, but I do work from home part time now. It's a wonderful positive shift. I love your plan.
