I wish you had gone with the one I recommended (High Water Mark) but the whole triolgy is amazing. Its just that the finale of the Gettysburg trilogy is insanely epic. That said the story element of this one is cool with the soldiers on opposing sides. High Water Mark is more conducive to a discussion about confederate general and statues to them since the song is largely about Lee's catastrophic strategic error that cost the South the war. I think if you look through the dvd's I sent you a long long time ago, one of them is The Gettysburg Trilogy (presented as a single 32 minute song) with a documentary and the band going through the battlefield.
The Civil War is a fascinating subject. I grew up in Virginia and went to school in Manassass (and later MIddleburg) which was a centerpiece to one of the great campaigns in the war. And I've been both to Antietam and Gettysburg. And I think its so incredibly important to look at how we got to the point where we were LITERALLY killing each other. Sometimes friends seperated only by county lines. The sad thing is that all these years later, racism ands bigotry isn't gone. Its still there and we are still fighting a war against it.
As for the statues, its a complex issue. I am all for those statues of Lee and others coming down (why would you have a symbol of what we overcame as a constant reminder to the public?), but why not move them to where they belong, on a battlefield that tells a story of the cost for the ideals of freedom. Lee is not a figured to be revered as a american hero, he is a cautionary tale. Not only for what he fought for but for his own hubris in the Gettysburg campaign.
Oh and this is not Matt Barlow. This is Tim "Ripper" Owens. He took over for Matt after the Horror Show album and did two albums. This was his first with the band. And a fantastic lineup musically. I saw them do the entire trilogy live at The Jaxx in Springfield, Virginia. Ripper is absolutely immaculate live, Iced Earth's new singer is one you haven't reacted to yet and he's amazing in his own right. They did a civil war song on the most recent album about the Irish army that fought during the civil war called "Clear the Way (December 13th, 1862)" and aside from being a pretty killer song it gives a good feel for Stu (the new singer) and his vocal abilities.

Curious that they made a decision to go with Part 2 - maybe because it is the shortest track in the trilogy?

@Dark Waters Yeah I agree sadly. This needs to be experienced from beginning to end, especially the way they like to analyze the content. This is one of my favorite musical pieces of any genre and it's a shame to just cross it off the list. Damn, what a bummer.

The Gettysburg Trilogy is my favorite thing Iced Earth has ever done so far. All three songs should be listened to back to back all together. Tim Owens did a phenomenal job on the singing. The Glorious Burden is one of my favorite Iced Earth albums. I know that Matt Barlow did do the whole album before he left the band the first time, and I wish that his version would be released one day. I would love to listen to his version as Matt is a phenomenal singer himself. Thank you for doing this reaction, but it should have been all three songs. Each song represents the one day of the three day battle. This was so well done. Jon Schaffer is such an amazing songwriter.

This was Tim "Ripper" Owens on this album as the vocalist. Sang with Judas Priest on a couple of albums in the 90s. Looking forward to the Matt Barlow interview if it happens. I believe he's a police officer in the NYPD now?

    • @rushzil2112

Barlow originally recorded all vocals for this album but Jon didn't like how it turned out. He did keep a few of the Barlow parts in this trilogy though. Seeing this whole trilogy live is a highlight of my past concerts. I'm glad I got to see Richard Christy live as well before music took a back seat to being on Howard Stern. I definitely agree with many comments that the whole trilogy needs to be heard with the third part, High Water Mark, being the standout.

Somewhere, sitting in Jon's collection, is the version of this album that has Matt Barlow on lead vocals and I'd love to hear it, even if Ripper is probably my favorite vocalist. The singer for this record was record was Tim Owens. Nevertheless I would love to see that interview with Matt if still possible. He's seems like a great guy and his current band Ashes of Ares is great! I strongly recommend the song Let All Despair by them. There's a video for that song as well. An interesting thing about Matt is that he actually quit Iced Earth after 9/11 to become a police officer because he felt we wasn't contributing to the real world. I find that very honourable.

One of the rare songs that always gives me goosebumps. If you can, listen to the entire Gettysburg trilogy by Iced Earth. My personal favorite is The Devil to Pay, but all of them are amazing and are meant to be listened to together.

  • @craven1927
    @craven1927 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

BTW the beginning part is based on a true situation. From the liner notes...
"The brother against brother intro is specifically based on the brother like friendship of Confederate General Lewis A. Armistead and Union General Winfield Scott Hancock. It was very common that friends and family were torn apart during the Civil War. Imagine having to face your best friend, brother, or cousin on a battlefield. Imagine trying to uphold your duty, even if it means killing your best friend. I chose to write 'brother against brother' based on Armistead and Hancock's relationship but it works for almost anyone who was faced with a similar situation. It is based on a conversation between the two the last night they were together, before going to their respective sides." - Jon Schaffer
And yes, at the battle of Gettysburg they did indeed find themselves on opposite ends of the same battlefield.

Iraq Vet here - i do miss war, but I think it stems from the unity of spirit and purpose. I miss my brothers and sisters, and I'm sad that we stand on other sides of the line on alot of issues, and man do we go round and round some times. But the argument always ends with "I love you man." That's missing in America right now.

Hold at All Costs is about the 20th Maine Infantry holding the flank at Gettysburg. Even with no ammo they held the flank for the Union, even charged the Confederates with bayonets and were key to the Union winning the battle. Proud to be from Maine, what they achieved should be told more!

This is part two of a trilogy. You really need to listen to the whole thing. Gettysburg was a three day battle, and each song covers each day in order. (July 1st, 2nd, & 3rd of 1863) There's an official lyric video that plays the entire trilogy together as one big song, which is how it was intended to be heard.
Also, Tim Ripper Owens sings on this album. This was the album that they were recording when Matt Barlow decided to leave the band.

I'm not sure if you guys had access to the liner notes for The Glorious Burden, but they illustrate the deeper nuances of the lyrics and what the music represents from the point of view of the historical account and from the writer's interpretation of these events as they unfolded. Hold at All Costs is a song specifically about the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg where Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment stood their ground on the Union left flank at the Little Round Top where they were ordered to "hold at all costs" against Confederate forces from Texas and Alabama. Colonel Chamberlain was outnumbered and outgunned and by the end of the day his forces had depleted their ammunition. As the final wave of southern forces came charging up the hill he ordered his commanders to have the men fix bayonets and commit everything they had to a downward charge which had so disconcerted the enemy that they stopped fighting and surrendered. Lt.Col Chamberlain, a college professor who commissioned in the Union Army to fight for the cause of freedom, with courage and spirit, had so inspired his men that despite having little means to continue fighting that they won that day for the Union which ultimately led to the success of the Battle of Gettysburg which was quite possibly one of the most pivotal moments in modern human history. Had Chamberlain failed, the Union would have been outflanked and ultimatley crushed by the weight of General Lee's assault, costing the north the battle, the war and finally the entire nation. It's my personal belief that we owe it to ourselves as Americans to always remember and honor Lt. Col Chamberlain and the 20th Maine for the brave sacrifices they made on July 2nd 1863, for without them the United States as we know it may never have existed.

We may not be perfect as this country was created by man but we are always striving to improve. Don't look to the government to give you a better life, that's not its job. Its job is to allow you to make your own way. You have to make good choices, live with the consequences, and however you turn out you only have yourself to blame.

You should do Clear The Way by Iced Earth. Also that would be your first exposure to their current singer who's amazing

Absolutely!!! Clear The Way is a MASTERPIECE!! I saw Iced Earth two years ago on their Incorruptible tour and it was PHENOMENAL!!! Clear The Way got a huge massive response big time. Stu Block and the band are amazing live.
