And, if someone lost their money ... Would they erroneously blame her. They could or might. Believe she's "responsible" when a third and or fourth unknown party really is.
Glad the news is getting these situations out there (authorities haven't been).
But, they should have kept her off camera at a minimum. Disguised her voice.
CHASE BANK is under attack. Getting hit hard by "someone" or entities.
Could even be hackers. If not worse.
It wasn't long ago that multiple banks were "attacked" because of a common mortgage lender. Customers woke up (who were current on their mortgage; already paid earlier in the month) only to discover multiple back to back withdrawals for mortgage payments; from 4-12 mortgage payments at once. And, holds on their accounts.
Maybe the news should have held off ONE business day. Did an after story.
Has someone ALREADY tried to withdraw the money? (Maybe.) She wasn't aware until trying to withdraw $20.00 but, couldn't. Thus, she hadn't contacted the bank yet - to freeze acct.
Someone's done something. And, doesn't appear her bank called her about it; to warn her of any hold.
Could someone be off by 1 number of an account number? 🤷With that amount?
Maybe she and the bank got lucky. If someone tried to transfer 1B out from her account before she noticed. And, it simply wouldn't/didn't go through.
      Money laundering? Without her knowing.

She should have the money put in an interest bearing account while this is fixed. That way she would make something off the money. Imagine what interest is paid on that kind of money in just a few days?!?! She would not be breaking any law either. As long as she returns the money when asked to. There is no law against her moving it to another account as long as she returns when they ask. Technically anyway.

I just ran the numbers (not a math genious) not sure if I'm correct but 1 percent annual over 3 days is approx. $82,000.

Banks are untrustworthy, use credit unions. Avoid bank bail-ins where they confiscate your deposits.

I do not agree with all the people that say keep the money, It is not Her money just because of a computer or bank error. She has no right to the money due to an error. There would be legal repercussion if she withdrew any part of the billion dollars.

  • @christophermccord3316

I wonder how long it would take the bank to realize the error if she hadn't mentioned it.... didn't spend any of the money and just sat on it....

She didn't have a billion. The top line is "available balance," the line below is "present balance." It makes no sense her available balance is higher than her present balance. What the ATM printed means nothing. I bet if she went to check her balance online, it would only show the $10,000, but maybe not even that. If her balance was really a billion, why wouldn't the ATM even give her $20? This isn't a news story, but someone looking to get their five minutes of fame.

Chase is a terrible bank. They let a fraudulent check for over $1000 go through causing my account to go negative. I didn't get any notification at all, they refused to show me a copy of the check or who the check went to, said there wasn't video surveillance and instead of getting the info I needed to go after the person they just deleted my account and made a new one to erase the evidence of their screw up.

Years ago I noticed a counter deposit of $30K in my bank account. I did not use the money but I did not say anything. After 30 days it was taken back. I was buying a house at the same time and I thought it looked good to have as much money in my checking account as possible. The problem came later as I did not want to be on the hook for taxes on that money. I was/am self employed so I consider whatever I deposit as my income for taxes.

The woman needs to charge interest on the money that was placed into her account before she releases it back. The bank would differently charge her.
