I was in school when this came out and bought the album, the following day my mate played it all the way through on an acoustic guitar in the classroom, he could learn any track instantly, great player. He is sadly gone but I did play in a group with him for several years. Great memories, thank you Sped. PS I seen them play this live as well.
Wow, that’s definitely a skill. I mean, I can now learn a few songs in a day. You get better at that the longer you play, it gets easier. Your friend sounds like a special player, sorry that they’re not with us any more. Were they pitch perfect or have a photographic memory? You will be able to do the same thing as well for sure, keep at it Charles!
This is the song that taught me hammer on and pull off! And only very recently, I’m an older chap relearning guitar. I heard the song and thought ‘I have to play that!’. I cannot tell you how much time I have put into this song, a lot, but I will definitely never be frightened by hammer on or pull offs ever again, they are now second nature! And I’m quite good at the song now even though I say it myself. Nice video, you do teach very well Sped….
Exactly, that’s where you want everything to be. Effortless and second nature. What’s cool about this example in particular is that it moves between shapes and little lead lines, a nice mixture of rhythm playing and intricate picking.
Over The Hills was one of the very first songs I learned on my first guitar in 1986. I still play it today. If you listen to the live version there is an extra riff Jimmy throws in the intro that sounds really nice. I'd love to see a video on some of the riffs that don't appear on the studio tracks. Stairway is another good example. Love your videos, Thanks!!!
Yeah I’ve mentioned this a few times, he’s just doing some major and minor thirds working his way up to the D chord but imagining it as a bar at the seventh fret. And I know the one you mean in Stairway to Heaven as well, they’re very cool, when I did my 5 facts about Stairway I did chuck in the little blues lick that he puts in the Am7 section.
If you haven't listened to the Zeppelin on BBC recordings you should find a copy. Comes as a 3 disc set and they have some arrangements that they only seemed to do on live shows as well as a couple medley arrangements of their own and other songs that are really great.
My pleasure Craig! It’s a mixture of feedback from you guys and my own style. I think we’ve found the right balance now. It’ll never suit EVERYONE but I wanna try and cater for all. 💪🏻
Was waiting on this video for a long time - but now I'm longing for the full version! As always your lessons are just the right amount of detail, easy to follow, no fluff, just perfect!
Another great lesson!!! I have always loved this song especially the live version from Madison Square Garden. Jimmy's small changes and additions throughout the song along with playing it on electric is such an amazing work of art.
Great lesson Sped .One of the first riffs I learned , had a low end guitar with high stiff action , very hard to play ,killed my fingers ! That guitar became a smasher at my friends show . He was the singer of a metal band that played a lot of Sabbath , AC/DC & Metallica covers . He put together a show with about 60 bands on a weekend from Friday til Sunday night , all kinds of music , rock, metal ,blues, country ,reggae, jazz ,punk etc ,. Good times
It is interesting you said you got so many comments on this song teaching hammer ons and pull offs. I always thought that learning this song when I was younger elevated my playing skills! The funny thing is that every time I play it, I still try to get it just right. Another great video.
Cool. I learned it quickly, even with the almost old now person early morning brain fog. Now I just have to remember that I know it. Use it , or lose it -- just like learning a language.
Getting all the new notes in when you’re learning a song is the hardest part. When you’re off sheet you can just practice and have fun. No more double checking.
I've been playing this slightly wrong since first learning it in high school 40 years ago. Fortunately (or not) I've been away from the guitar long enough that I didn't have to unlearn the old habits too much.
I passed on this beauty playing guitars upstairs at SWAS in Redlands, cause my bestie Richard had already nailed it, as 16 year olds ... but now I'm nearly 60, and it's caught my ear again. So, yes, Sped, you are still turning on folks, even though it's 40+ years later now - but what took my friend probably 2 weeks from ear, barely took about twice the time of the video for me ;-)
I'm not sure what it is about your cameos asking is to like the videos but they work for me. I forget sometimes and you cutting in and reminding us is a good way to remind us in my opinion. I love the videos Sir!
Thank you haha! Yeah I like to change it up otherwise it gets boring for everyone saying the same thing all the time. If I had more time to do stuff like that I'd probably change costume as well. 🤘🏻🤣
@@SpedSpedding haha! I love your costumes and thumbnails and all the extra little stuff you do too, like story time! I'm gonna buy that book one of these days, it's super interesting! Sped, another great video. Thanks for the shout-out… I forgot to comment on your ALS video what a great job you did breaking down that one too. Not quite there yet. Have not crossed over to the realm of mighty axemen… can only live vicariously through you, watching in amazement as you keep up with JP, note for note on that one. Tell me, did you not feel like an absolute Rock God the first time you played along with that after figuring it out?! It’s why we get out of bed in the morning! Bless you for educating the masses…. And so generously sharing the source of your hat. Good man!
There were loads of people commenting the same song so I thought this video would be a little fun. Learning the Achilles solo was a lot of fun, always challenging rhythmically but that’s what makes learning stuff by Jimmy so fun. And you get to take many interesting ideas forward with you and incorporate them into your own style. You’re welcome for the content. Glad you’re enjoying it.
If you remember my previous video, I had no idea that Love is the Law would end up as something I would never forget. The nostalgic riffs often hold permanent resident. 🙌🏻
Amazing channel!!!!! finally a really zeppelian teaching the gods riffs!!! I thougt first, man without the Tabs makes no sense, but I was wrong, the tabs are easy to get them but how to play them is the art!!!! Thx!!! and best regards from Spain!
I am going to thank you Sped. You teach at the right speed for me and I really appreciate it. It will be hard not to hear from you in week. We need more Zeppelin.. Still looking for the song In the Evening from you, not that I very much appreciate all you have done so far!!! Like always you are the best!!! I hope your legs are not falling asleep with all these wonderful lessons. Please keep up the great work!!!
My couch is so low, when I sit for ages all the blood rushes out and I get dead legs. 😂😂😂 Fell over after Achilles it was hilarious. Glad you enjoy my stuff.

Thanks Sped. Another great one. As I expected, it's a real challenge for me to move quickly / accurately between the hammer-on & pull-off sections and the chord strums. Will keep at it !
I’ve been there myself. Those creative flats and burnouts come around yearly for me. Just set yourself one decent, fun and achievable goal and press through! See you on the other side. 🙌🏻
Love this song, it inspired me to pickup the guitar. Two guys at my highschool used to play this one along with Crosby, Stills & Nash and some Hendrix. I like the way you teach, it works for me.
Glad to finally have the time to catch up see what the Spedman is up too. Moved everything we own to Nashville Tn a few months ago. Finally set up studio in new house ready to Rock again. This is the best city and state best players all seem to be here. Downtown has it all.
Yeah, you hear that in all corners of the world and I honestly believe it to be true. Don’t get me wrong there are incredible talents all over the world but 🇺🇸 Nashville is definitely a hotspot. Fortunate enough to have visited there for a couple days when we were travelling a few years back.
I got the book for Christmas, it’s great and yes, big and heavy. Yes, this is one of my earliest learned songs as well, I probably learned it in about 1977. I actually found this one quite easy and when I played it people were really impressed but I always used to think I don’t know why as it’s not that difficult. I found Stairway harder.
Some riffs just sit nicely in the hand don’t they? Even though they might be faster or harder technically speaking. Stairway moves around a lot more than this so I can see why it’s challenge you more.
I was lucky enough to see Jimmy play this live in 75'. Didn't know the song name, just recalled it from radio. Bought the only chord book available a couple years later, all written by a non guitarist, and for years didn't know alternate tunings were why songs were much easier fingerings. Like the Rain Song in standard tuning, crazy. Nice videos enjoy them all!
Ah I can imagine it would have been really annoying trying to figure certain things out and always staying in standard. Page liked to experiment. Genius songs born out of that. Glad you like the videos. Thanks.
Sped, thanks so much for the lesson and showing me how to play it correctly after all this time. Also appreciate the great books you showcase which I’m adding to my shelf. Unfortunately, I could never pull off wearing the hat.
You could pull off whatever hat you wanna wear! I never used to wear hats and then one day I was like, “I like hats, I’m gonna start wearing them.” 🤘🏻😂 You’re welcome for the video glad you enjoyed it
Epic... i can play this but after watching the lesson i realise i can play it badly.. massive inspiration to now clean it up and get it 100% spot on.. love this song and perfect follow up to the hammer on and pull off lesson last week.. muting the A/D striung riff and also muting the G string on the second riff to let the open D ring out really helps.. now if i could just nail those 3rds!!.. Top work mate as always!!!!
That's awesome Mike thank you for the feedback. Glad to know those extra little bits of information make the difference. I will keep it up. You know me, can't shut me up!
Haha! Yeah back by popular request. There’s a Bowie book and a Slash one on there. Need to change up the series a bit. Can always nip down to the library for some Shakespeare too.
Another excellent and enjoyable lesson - I’ve managed to blunder along with my own slight variations on this beautiful tune but am now motivated to learn it properly. Oh - very funny bit about it being illegal to not hit like and subscribe! I’m already a subscribed Patreon but smashed the like button. Thanks for these videos.
You’re always welcome. The reminders go a long way. Liking something genuinely does have an effect on a videos success. Even more so since they hid the amount of dislikes on a video. 🤯
Funny you should list your video that way because that was the first Zeppelin song I learned and it did introduce me to hammer ons and pull offs. Small World indeed! Btw love your humor and expertise concerning all things Zep related good on ya.

What a great channel I've just found! Awesome content, great guitar playing and beautiful cinematic quality!
So very lovely! Thanks for your kindness & illumination.. helping to keep or keeping my time productive.. cool! Less time spent fumbling.. thx so much..
Is this something you’ve tried before? I tend to find my own way with a lot of the songs but try to keep it close to the track and efficient across the fretboard. If you prefer things slightly different then bring your own flavour to it. 🔥
@@SpedSpedding indeed you do.. loving your cover.. your version is excellent.. why blaze a new trail when I have so little time to practice this year. Next year I have plans on reinventing my music time.. refocusing and structuring goals both short and long term. Thanks for being here.. you prove to offer an exceptional experience in guitar playing …the strengths I achieve here fortifies my ability across the fretboard. That’s irreplaceable .. add to that the ambiance of my encounters.. I mean you get the Led out.. my guitar teacher reads me Led Zeppelin stories 🤘😻😎for Christ’s sake I better hurry up and learn before we run out of stories.. lol

Would be so awesome to see your instruction on Page's Live Version at MSG - even if just the first minute or two, which is what Page typically does Live. You make everything so easy to follow along with despite the complexity of the guitar work, and you are spot on with the actual songs.
Not sure I've ever listened to this track, certainly not in 40 years or so, and never so carefully as I just have after watching your lesson. Thanks for throwing it my way. I love the intro which is definitely a good work out for the pull-off skills especially if you play it on an acoustic guitar as Jimmy did (I knew that from the sound but couldn't resist checking the book to be confident enough to go public!) One to try out for certain, for which your TAB will be a necessity.
Things pass me by all the time, no problem! Glad you liked it. I like songs that have a hybrid of rhythm and a little lead line. Similar thing happens in My my Hey hey. You've seen that one right?
@@SpedSpedding Well, actually... Just had to search for that. I'm with you re the guitar playing but I could never get on with Neil Young's singing voice, so I've always avoided him.

@@SpedSpedding Tweak is an understatement. I’ve been playing it wrong the whole time. 😂 It went well and will continue working on it. I wasn’t at the point of no return where I can’t re learn it. Thanks so much for all you do. It’s much appreciated.
Hah! Sped! I beat you to it... I had already learned this tune before you posted this video! I still watched it all the way through, and thoroughly enjoyed it, however... so I suppose you still win! Jolly good show my old chap!
Always loved this song but can see now I have been a tad overexuberant with the chord strumming…..thanks for making it so clear and inspiring me to pick up my guitar again.
Ah you’re welcome! As always it’s my spin on things. I feel like less is more with the strumming on this one though until it opens up at the end. More about dividing up the bass and treble with the pick. Balance. 🙌🏻
Me old China plate, you are bloody grouse! Definitely the best lessons on Zeppelin on the web! I'd buy you a beer, but its a long way to Tipperary! In fact its Over The Hills and Far Away! So sport, a million thank you's, because I've been Wanton that song, a lot, but sadly now I can't Ramble on, I gotta Rock n Roll. So be safe, well, and happy!
Sped! Hey ,I cannot access my Patreon cuz I forgot my password, so many of things I wanted to talk to you about are gone by the wayside and Down by the Seaside. Ahhh, This was one of the first Zep tunes I figured out, but had had tough time with the timing. Not bad huh? This was still a fine vid. although I did not learn from it, it was good to see you! BTW I LOVE the hat man!. One thing that struck me was the beautiful tone you get out of your rig. It was ringing out like a bell mate.
Great job really enjoying your tutorials hope sometime in the future you can find time to cover the whole song especially the live version from madison square garden 👍
One of the first Zep songs I learned to play (I think the first may have actually been Stairway). That would have been back in 91-92? Sure would have been nice to have had this tutorial back then. What took you so long? ;) Another great lesson Sir.
Well of course, this is immaculate (as always) but unless I’m very much mistaken “Since I’ve been Loving You” remains as one of their finer songs that you have not covered and that Is very much not due to your not inconsiderable talent and technique… What do you mean it’s too long? Lol. Take it easy…
Great video sir I really appreciate it, As my wife and I are sitting home with the dreaded covid virus, (it has been mild) and this is the one song I have been ( trying to ) play on my acoustic and my short sausage fingers just could not get this riff right Thanks man !
I really hope you both feel better soon! Gab has just got over it, she wasn’t great. 😟 Also hoping this video throws you a couple pointers on how to get it up to scratch! 🤘🏻
P.S. Some videos on how he got his tones and how to approximate them with the kind of equipment most players have or can get. For example: 1. That strange flanging phased effect on the guitar in the intro to Nobody's Fault But Mine (zero point flanging?). 2. That searing cut in the solo of Since I've Been Loving You, plus that live version in the film at the point the NYPD bobby's jaw drops (I always wondered if that cop quit the force and became a hippy after that lol) 3. That big sounding reverb or delay in the solo of You Shook Me. The solo in Tangerine is similar (delay and reverb pedals do not seem to sound the same to me, plus I figure it is probably added at the mixing desk via a bus). 4. Wah, fuzz, and Echoplex for the Dazed and Confused intro. Probably the easiest of this list, but running echo into a crunchy amp might seem strange to some folk. 5. How he makes a fuzz tone cut and not sound all mushy in the low end like they tend to do. Cheers.
Wow! Me too.. I’d like to read Sped’s research on these stand out sounds.. what a very refined interpretation.. incredible points indeed.. thanks for asking.
I actually have something like this planned, it’s not specific to these songs but more a cinematic sketch followed by some tips on tone I’m general and what I’m using from time to time. I love your suggestions here though, maybe this is something else I could take a look at. I’m by no means an expert or a massive gear nut. I just use my ear and get by with what I have.

Sped, thanks so much for the lesson and showing me how to play it correctly after all this time. Also appreciate the great books you showcase which I’m adding to my shelf. Unfortunately, I could never pull off wearing the hat.
You could pull off whatever hat you wanna wear! I never used to wear hats and then one day I was like, “I like hats, I’m gonna start wearing them.” 🤘🏻😂
You’re welcome for the video glad you enjoyed it
This riff is a definite crowd pleaser. Thanks Sped and Mr. Page!
Epic... i can play this but after watching the lesson i realise i can play it badly.. massive inspiration to now clean it up and get it 100% spot on.. love this song and perfect follow up to the hammer on and pull off lesson last week.. muting the A/D striung riff and also muting the G string on the second riff to let the open D ring out really helps.. now if i could just nail those 3rds!!.. Top work mate as always!!!!
That's awesome Mike thank you for the feedback. Glad to know those extra little bits of information make the difference. I will keep it up. You know me, can't shut me up!
Thanks for the lessons, but love the personality too. You one of the coolest and most interesting teachers on the tube.
Ah thank you! Really appreciate that. Love the username too. 🐺
Aaah you read from the good book again, so comforting. I feel better now.
Thank you Roland! That’s everything I want it to be. Have fun. 🙌🏻🍿
I enjoy your videos! Lots of love from Missouri, my friend. ❤
I mean you get the Led out.. my guitar teacher reads me Led Zeppelin stories 🤘😻😎for Christ’s sake I better hurry up and learn before we run out of stories.. lol
@@SpedSpedding I guess I failed to answer your question.. sbt.. that is a “no” I haven’t tried it before.. I’m so freaking slow I’m still trying to get on top of the “Misty Mountain Hop”.. hope you have a splendid week.. again.. thanks for this.. it’s a beauty and one I want to play for sure.
Beautiful! Apart from Stairway that I heard as a 5 year old, this was my entrance song for LZ! Amazing
How cool! Loved that so many of you had the same experience with the hammers and pulls. 🔨
Would be so awesome to see your instruction on Page's Live Version at MSG - even if just the first minute or two, which is what Page typically does Live. You make everything so easy to follow along with despite the complexity of the guitar work, and you are spot on with the actual songs.
Thanks for another great lesson, Sir Spedding! A good week unto you! 🎸🧙♂️
- Trey
You’re welcome! Have a good one yourself. 🔥
Thx man, it‘s interesting how many different ways there are to play that riff and you cleared it up 4 me! 👍
Yeah for sure. I always use my ear and just go with what feels comfortable and efficient in terms of placement on the fretboard.
thank you for a awesome lesson for part 1 , you are the only one who plays this correctly thank you
My pleasure. 🙌🏻
Videos are way better with the hat and story time. Good vid. Learned a couple extra nuances i didn't play before. Thanks bud! 😁👍
Ha good to know it makes the difference! 🎩 😂 You’re welcome. Happy to help.
Bravo! Great lesson as usual! Cheers
Thanks!!
Love it thanks sped
Great vid as always Mr Spedding maybe someday you could do a lesson from TSRS version of this song 🇨🇦🤘🏻
Thank you! Yeah maybe some day. 💪🏻
Absolutely love your Channel Sped, always brilliantly made content and amazing guitar ability.
Well done 👏
Thank you Jay! You’re welcome, really glad you’re enjoying it. 🍿
Great stuff as usual appricate the content man and wish ya well
Love it! I still play this every time I pick up a guitar!
Would love to see you tackle the intro to Stairway
I've done a cover of the whole song, a while back now.
@@SpedSpedding Oh thanks, I will look for it. Love your videos!
@@SpedSpedding any chance of a Black Mountain Side tutorial?
Great lesson nice to see a young fella keeping this great music alive 👍
Thank you John! Yeah I do my best, glad my style works for you. 🙌🏻
Thanks for including the strumming pattern. That's what i've been struggling with :)
Happy to help!
love this video, mate!
It's an awesome song to play. I probably drive my wife crazy with it lol. He does it slightly different in his live shows. Great video as always man!
Yeah the bit with the 3rds harmony creeping is really cool. I just wanted to give people a taste and do something for you guys; its “your riff.”
Another great lesson, this is on my to do list, currently working on Thank you from Zep 2, keep up the great work and those interesting anecdotes, thanks.
Will do Victor! Thank you for the comment. Enjoy learning this when you get around to it.
I just added you to my list of subscriptions. I just discovered your channel around Christmas time. I was looking for help with Zeppelin tunes. Thanks for the lessons
That’s awesome Allen. Hope you enjoy the other stuff on here and that you had a nice Christmas. 🙌🏻✨
stick to it...sped is one of the "good"un's....trust me....:-)...i know.....
Hi.. found your channel couples of week ago.. and I fill just blessed .. my les Paul was sleeping since months and now I can’t sleep because of your posts 😁.. great teaching and great stuff .. thank you for your videos and binging us the sound of Led Zeppelin
Big up from France 🤘🏻
Hello all the way to France. 🇫🇷
It seems I am keeping you both awake now! 😂 Glad you’ve got it out the case though and are back at it.
Thank you! I play this like a maniac every time I pick a guitar up. I’ll be sure to try your way and see how it goes. 😊🤘🏻
P.S A full lesson on this some time in the future would be utterly awesome.
Haha, would love to hear the maniac version! Let me know how it goes after you tweak it, well if you do! Have fun.
@@SpedSpedding Tweak is an understatement. I’ve been playing it wrong the whole time. 😂 It went well and will continue working on it. I wasn’t at the point of no return where I can’t re learn it. Thanks so much for all you do. It’s much appreciated.
Thanks Sped!!!!!😊🎸
My pleasure Keith! Have fun. 🎸
Thank you Sped! I like your Lynard Skynard hat.
Thank you! 🇺🇸
Hah! Sped! I beat you to it... I had already learned this tune before you posted this video!
I still watched it all the way through, and thoroughly enjoyed it, however... so I suppose you still win!
Jolly good show my old chap!
I snooze, I lose. 🙌🏻😂
Thanks for watching. Always a pleasure.
Beautiful song
Just bought the book, thank you.
Hope you enjoy it!
Hey sped I think your the coolest I really like how you turn into jimmy page when your doing story time keep it up thx
Love this! One of the best zepp songs in my opinion!
Great breakdown
Speds back at it again!! 😎
Can't stop myself Jake.
Just sitting here debating which led song to rework on. Thank you!
I’ve given you too many. 😂
@@SpedSpedding more on the lines of not enough
Always loved this song but can see now I have been a tad overexuberant with the chord strumming…..thanks for making it so clear and inspiring me to pick up my guitar again.
Ah you’re welcome! As always it’s my spin on things. I feel like less is more with the strumming on this one though until it opens up at the end. More about dividing up the bass and treble with the pick. Balance. 🙌🏻
sped love the videos and the lessons and absoloutly love the hat totally rock and roll very kool
Thank you Dan! That’s really nice.
Love you sped you’re great!
Right back at you Noah. ❤️🙌🏻
Been playing this for years and doing it wrong!! Thanks Sped, you are a brilliant guitarist and teacher 👍👍
Thank you Steve! Sounds like you’ve got a head start to tweak a few things then? Have fun.
cant wait for part 2
I always play it on acoustic Sped. Thanks
Yeah, but electric is easier for production. 👌🏻
Maybe a beer wouldn’t make it but I’d be happy to settle for tea for one. ☕️ 🫖
@@SpedSpedding 😂
Of course it was this song that I was taught that taught me hammer on and pulling off. Thanks so zoso!
Yeah you and so many. We’re on a nostalgia trip here. 🙏🏻
Nice ....very nice. This is a keeper.
You also have to be exceptionally cool to pull of that hat. Great one maestro.
Haha thanks Tim!
Sped, I bought that book off Amazon. Fantastic.
Has it arrived? 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding Yes I got it over the xmas holidays. Brilliant read.
Almost forgot to hit the like button 🤠 Thanks for the reminder. Thanks for the videos too.
Haha glad it worked! 🚨
Great job really enjoying your tutorials hope sometime in the future you can find time to cover the whole song especially the live version from madison square garden 👍
Great video. Thanks!!!!
Again, glad you liked it Jimmy!
Hi, great learning video, are you using a speaker cabinet and amp to get that wonderful clean tone?
One of the first Zep songs I learned to play (I think the first may have actually been Stairway). That would have been back in 91-92? Sure would have been nice to have had this tutorial back then. What took you so long? ;) Another great lesson Sir.
Hahaha I would have been 3, that’s what took me so long! 🤣🤣
Great lesson man!
Thank you Mike!
Found your channel a week ago hit the subscribe button absolutely love it hope ramble on lesson will be soon thanks a bunch cheers👍👍👍
Ah thank you so much. You’ll be pleased to know that’s already done! ✨ You’ll find it.
speds tutorials = goat
I know how to play this song, but I wasn't playing the Bflat6 right, thanks for showing that. It sounds better that way!
Ah cool, so you still got something out of it. That’s great! 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding Always !
Also hoping this video throws you a couple pointers on how to get it up to scratch! 🤘🏻
P.S. Some videos on how he got his tones and how to approximate them with the kind of equipment most players have or can get.
For example:
1. That strange flanging phased effect on the guitar in the intro to Nobody's Fault But Mine (zero point flanging?).
2. That searing cut in the solo of Since I've Been Loving You, plus that live version in the film at the point the NYPD bobby's jaw drops (I always wondered if that cop quit the force and became a hippy after that lol)
@@SpedSpedding well done..
