The Most Expensive Deleted Scenes Filmed

  • It’s never easy to delete scenes from a movie that seem important, especially when a lot of hard work and hard-earned money was put into filming them. However, edits always have to be made, and sometimes it’s the expensive scenes that have to go.
    Maybe the studio thought the original ending was too dark, or maybe a subplot didn’t fit in, but these deleted scenes ended up costing the movies a lot of money.
    From the lengthy original ending of a beloved musical to the legendary Wizard of Oz scene that we’ll probably never see, here are some of the most expensive deleted scenes ever filmed.
    #Movies #DeletedScenes #Films
    World War Z's darker final act | 0:00
    Rogue's scenes in X-Men: Days of Future Past | 1:42
    The original tragic ending of Little Shop of Horrors | 2:30
    The Jitterbug dance number from The Wizard of Oz | 3:33
    Returning to Krypton in Superman Returns | 4:27
    Eric Stoltz's scenes from Back to the Future | 5:21

    What other costly deleted scenes do you think should've made this list?

      Looper I would guess all the deleted and unused scenes from the LOTRs films cost quite a bit.

      The Abyss maybe. They cut like 30 minutes off that film. And that was some really nice CGI scenes, must have cost a fortune.

      Ritchard Donnar's Superman II. Basically 70% of the movie was shot. When they started all over, only using a fraction of his footage.

    • @FabledGentleman
      @FabledGentleman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Know Your Video Games that's not entirely true, They had to get the amount of scenes done by Richard Lester to over 50% of the total, that way Lester could be credited as director, and Donner could be removed. They used a lot more than just a fraction of Donner's shots.

      One of the best decisions in filmmaking history! That said, Eric Stoltz absolutely ROCKED the film, "Mask" (and I think did a better job than Michael J Fox would have, in the same role).

    More on the Jitterbug sequence: It wasn't just deleted for time -- Victor Fleming, while editing, felt that an upbeat dance number undermined the mood of that section of the movie, which is the darkest part of the film. But he NEGLECTED to take out a line where the Wicked Witch tells the head flying monkey that she's "sent a nasty little insect to take the fight out of them", aka the Jitterbug. (It's supposed to be a magical spell that makes people dance against their will until they're exhausted.)

      No, it sounds like the classic useless and baseless drama that lazy writers use to heighten the suspense and stress level of the readers in order to create a memorable read. It's not enjoyable, it's not interesting, it doesn't bring anything new. It's poor writing and poor entertainment. I don't often commend the editing choices, but this is clearly one of the better ones.
      But I'm not surprised by your comment. Not only could it be argued that thiw version is more in line with the book, there are always a few simple minded folk that think that since the deleted scene is harder to watch (trust me, it's a gruelling read), then it must be better. The mistake these people make is they don't think about reader (well, viewer) enjoyment and added value. These kind of debates could be avoided if writers weren't such lazy pieces of shite. If I wanted to see this kind of "real world" drama, I would read biographies, not fucking zombie flicks.

      The book and the movie have almost nothing in common, aside from the world building. The movie starts with the premise of the story, creates the Brad Pitt character to be its center, and writes a story specifically about him set in the world created by the book.

    Funny things is WWZ was outstanding because of the theatrical third scene after an explosive action set-up. It gave the movie sophistication and gravitas, that only accentuated the entertainment value of the gore. The happy ending was far more plausible and full filling, but they can still do sequels - tons of story to tell.

    • @ragabashmoon1551
      @ragabashmoon1551 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, Frank Oz hated changing it, but he knew it had to be done. With a play at the end of the play all the cast comes out and bows as the audience applauds you know everyone is okay, but a movie just goes to credits. For that and other reasons, movies and plays are a totally different audience. I read that Geffen was so mad about having to change the ending that he sat on the footage for years. Even the one released in 2012 is not the best quality copy of the footage, because Geffen still has it and refuses to give it to Warner Bros. because he's bitter that they changed the ending in the first place.

    Yugoslav movie "The Battle of Neretva". The scene was the demolition of an actual railway bridge. Due to excessive smoke, the footage was poor so they re-built the demolished bridge and blew it up again, but in spite of efforts to reduce smoke the footage was again poor. In the end they used a scale model for the footage that did make it to the film.

    • @sleepcrime
      @sleepcrime 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't blame Alien 3 on test audiences, that movie was doomed from the start. It's not even a terrible movie (woeful early CG work aside) it's just a terrible sequel. Producers went with a complete departure from the previous movie with a bizarre wooden planet of monks and the alien reimagined as a literal demon from hell in Vincent Wards Alien 3 script. Ward was also set to direct and the sets were already under construction and casting underway when the studio bottled it, fired ward, dumped his script and hired Fincher to start shooting as scheduled despite the fact they had no script. The sets were reworked for the prison planet and the monks as prisoners. It's worth noting that Ripley survived Wards script despite having an Alien inside her.

    It seems to me there are more than a few entire films that had to be scrapped before completion, and it hardly gets more expensive than that!
    Dark Blood being a good example as it's star River Phoenix died during shooting and it was impossible to get around what they hadn't filmed yet. Years later they did eventually cobble together a version to release but it was more or less just a shell of a movie with whole missing scenes replaced with narration explaining what was supposed to have happened.

This is probably one of the most rampant grammar mistakes I see, you can find someone using "of" instead of making a contraction as it should be in pretty much every comment section these days.

      I understand why it sounds similar when you say it. But when you write it? As I said, I am a foreigner to english, but it sticks out so obviously wrong to me. The question is: Do these people know it's wrong and use it anyway because of lazyness? Or do they genuinely think that's how it is spelled?
      I am wondering now how many strange mistakes I do each day using my own language without knowing it while foreigners would be able to pick it up ...

      A lot of people think that 'could of' is correct. I also see a lot of 'you were been offered' instead of 'you were being offered'. A lot of mobile phone style text speak seems to lead to a fair amount of bad writing too.

    • @DaNxFaM
      @DaNxFaM 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Believe it or not I tried writing 'could've' but my phone decided being grammatically incorrect with 'could of' was the best wording to use xD.
      Although I can't rule out myself misspelling it, I'm notoriously bad with not noticing my phones auto correct :P

    Wow. That one scene could have turned that Superman movie around, and it didn't even have to be the opening. They could have easily put in a scene with him telling Lois all about his journey, which would have been an amazing callback later when he witnesses Luther building a new continent that was far too similar to the barren waste of his home world. That movie had such great potential, and failed so hard.

    How is it a 'deleted scene' if the final third to World War Z was never even shot? Deleted scenes are cut footage, not alternative plots.

      Deleted from the script. The idea that a deleted scene only counts after they've shot it only comes from moviemakers only putting those on the DVD since people find it boring to watch storyboard slides.

    He says the Wizard of Oz jitterbug rehearsal was shot "on video", but there was no "video" in 1939 (let alone "video tape"). FYI, NTSC video started in 1941 and the first (very bulky) video recorder was made in 1956.

    Harold Arlin did not capture the gitterbug scene in the WIZARD OF OZ on VIDEO. He FILMED the sequence in 16mm. Video, of course did not exist at that time.

    The major deletion from World War Z helps explain the bizarre credit Matthew Fox received on the finished film. I really like Matt, but he was seen in a couple of glimpses, maybe spoke the words "get in," and that was it! So apparently, his principal role as the cuckolder of Brad Pitt got left on the cutting room floor, but they gave him the credit in any event.
