For your keys question, they're not really unique xD if you look closely you'll see that there's different highs and lows on the key, and thats a specific number code based on the heights. And inside the lock there's pins of different heights that match the key. They're not unique at all, but it's enough to have each key in a building different, for example if your key has 4 different pins chosen out of 6 different height levels, then you can create 6^4 different keys (e.g. 1296). Which is more than enough for even old school hotels that still use physical keys xD
but there has to be accidental copies of some keys. I mean how many locks are there in the world? millions?
@@Keckegenkai yep, exactly why i said they're not unique haha. There's also some locks that can be opened by the same key (called a master key) even if they all have different keys (its like a physical backdoor)
Edit: i'd even say theres trillions of locks not just millions because in a single household you can have many doors each with different locks, closets, drawers, lockers etc =p
@@Keckegenkai that's the point. There are many keys that could unlock a door, but just having the key doesn't tell you where you can use it. Just like there are many accounts with the password "123456", but knowing that doesn't immediatly allow me to acces all their accounts, because I don't know the username or where to login in the first place
The old "standard" home locks here would have 6 pins. There would be 3 slightly different keyhole designs to go with those keys. That's already 101 million different combinations in the 3 most common lock bodies.
Nowadays, most keys will have either little divots or bumps on the side. Which can be virtually anywhere-ish. It has a cool design to make production easy.
This made the number of possible combinations astronomically high, though. The tolerance of the divots on my lock is about .4mm. Divide the key length by the tolerance to get the amount of different placements for those. As well as different sizes, depth,... Oh and little security pins on the side or bottom of the key which have multiple possible locations.
It would take a miracle to find the same key on 2 different locks.
In 4 pin tumblers it is pretty common. (Lockpicking is a fun hobby, btw)
@@simmerke1111 yeah I didn't go into details about all the different kind of pins to keep it simple (which are mostly there to add lockpick resistance) x'] And i meanly focused on locks with 4 pins to keep it simple although there are 6 pin ones and also different cylinders etc. I'm pretty sure LPL would explain it much better than me anyways haha but it's nice to see a fellow lockpicking hobbyist and thanks for adding extra info for the curious ones who want to know more.

theres a movie thats based all around the fact the the soviet apartments were all mirrored on the same layout. Therefore for one reason or another, the keys were the same for every building and so one person could use their key to get into another persons apartment in a different building if they shared the same room number. Movie is called "The Irony of Fate"

Keys work by pushing pins in a lock. the lock can only turn if all of the pins are directly inside of it with none in either the chamber where the key goes, or the chamber above. This means that your key pushes all the pins exactly allowing the lock to turn when you turn your key.
Ive never seen you play out of your mind and also troll a fair bit (for content ofc). AMAZING video.

About the keys: Most keys are actually not unique, and some more common ones work on millions of locks around the world.
It just doesn't really come up often, because most people don't go around trying their keys on thousands of other locks.
