You could have made a spacer to go under the cylinder to make it work. This might introduce other issues with the ex pipe bolting up and the carb not aligning with the air boot. These could be overcome fairly easily.
Bro I got the next model dt175, where yours ended at 81, in Oz I got the first year of the next road models, an 82. I didn't think this would be an issue with mine but it is and the piston advertised as 82-10, makes me wonder how they still sell them wrong
if you are trying to find pistons or rings for the 74 75 or 76 They are kinda hard to find or there expensive. But the MX 175 bikes the piston and rings fit I got nos OEM rings For under $20 remember the MX has the same piston and rings same part number

Yes, a waste of time and money. The older stuff can be tricky to get the right parts sometimes.
