Worth noting that a heavy duty plastic bin bag will reach 6-8000mm hydrostatic head.
I also have £6 pound waterproofs that will go over 12000mm
Hydrostatic head is important but you also need to factor in the weight and breathability of the material.
I have some plastic storage boxes in my back room with a hydrostatic head of about 100 feet. Not sure I would want to make a jacket out of them mind ...

hi thank you for the video but one question my coat has waterproof rating of 5000 mm what does this mean? will water seep through

You are perfectly fine with a waterproof rating of 5000, that's able to hold 5 metres of water pressure before it seeps.
You'd have to be in extreme conditions for any noticeable effect.
Having said that, I find the longevity can be effected to varying degrees depending on the materials used.
I tend to stick to 5000 jackets because they are cheaper and can be replaced after a while.
      *_edit_* 4 years late, oops.

@@WhoThisMonkeyi tend to stick to higher rated jackets... So they don't have to be replaced after a while, saving on cumulative cost. Also for doing a better job at keeping me dry

No that's incorrect. More does not always mean a better fabric there are many factors to consider. btw BSI is 20000mm

I'm not homophobic, just a little surprised, outdoor gear isn't usually their forte, I guess, though, could call it broke back mountain warehouse? Lol, hey, it was a good video.
