    Awesome. The only thing I'm missing is a source for synchronizer parts. I imagine circlips and pressing things apart would be required to replace those. I've done a WC T5. Appreciate the video!

    Excellent video! This video helped me solve an issue with my 6 speed in an E46 M3 that would occasionally get stuck in a gear. After watching this video several times and figuring out how the transmission works, I pulled out the Neutral roller detent, and the transmission would then allow movement between the gears. It turns out the spring behind the roller detent was broken and somehow binding, preventing the primary shift shaft from moving forward or back out of the position it was in. Thanks a ton!

      Which gear/s were you getting stuck in? Mine is stuck in reverse but clutch and everything works and car drives, just only in reverse lol

    Great job Frank. Very interesting. I never saw a 420G from the inside. Thanks for sharing. Have a great New Year's Eve with all your loved ones. It was a great year, Frank. Thanks for that. Dutch regards, Nico.

    Nice tear down. If I could make a suggestion - the graphics should be saved for the beginning and end of the video. It’s very distracting to have the video cut to graphics over and over.

    Fearless Frank to the rescue. I've also heard that no parts are generally available for the 420G besides the detent repair kits. Probably some seals.
    Did you use Permatex Aviation III form a gasket for the case halves? I use it on paper style gaskets but I don't let it "set up" very long, but I would want to let it set up a bit longer for an application like this. I assume you painted it on the day before as it never gets fully cured like silicone. Think tree sap in January.
    I'd still be nervous and be reaching for the silicone (something like Ajusil etc) but many swear by the aviation including myself. I also use it as a thread sealant occasionally for say those drain and fill plugs. Probably just makes me feel better. Also works for air fittings in lieu of Teflon tape.
    I agree with the other commenter that you deserve more subscribers, I won't name names but some other channels have viewers who seem so desperate to overdo it with the praise and they're doing less real work (unnecessary constant oil and fluid changes, constant primping and detailing, in short - work, but unnecessary in many ways) while good old Frank is doing very nice work and showing how difficult it is to do things and has not nearly enough viewership for the quality and friendly ego-free excellent information and style! ;)

    @Garageaholic Nice! You motivated me to open her up too. Iam in the progress of dismanteling the 420G SMG. I stumble upon some challenges. I seperated the bellhousing and the rear transmission.
    1. The steel balls from the detents are stuck. You could easily remove the balls with a magnet. I can feel the magnet engage the steel ball, but wont budge. Seems like its not alligned to go out.
    2. I suspect the shafts are blocked some how. Any advice to unlock it to neutral? I am not able to spin the shafts or shift in gears.
    CHeers! And keep up the content.

    Excellent video, incredibly useful. Just took two apart with this on in the background.
    The stupid little pins in the 1-3-5 detent area absolutely ruined my life for a while.
    Noticed you didn't mention them upon reassembly- do they just mind their own business..?

    Great - thanks a lot here from germany! Helped me out! Whould be nice if you could show how the reverse gear internals are put together exactly - after they fell out completely into the gearbox by loosing the "bolt you should never take out". Also some torqening infos for all screws would be great. Please comment also on the uprade kit for the 5 bearings, springs and cylinders... By the way, did you ever faced the problem of only the 5th gear slipping out during drive?

    If I remove the pin from the reverse detent would I be able to use the rest of the transmission?? And if so, could I theoretically kind of still use reverse gear without the detent by holding the shifter physically in place? This video has somehow evaded me and I thank you for your time!

    Awesome vid! My E39 M5 is shifting great but is one of the many that leaks. I've thought of pulling it off in another winter or two to try to fix the issue; could you tell us what sealant you used between the sections of the casing when you reassembled?

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep! It’s called permatex aircraft sealant. It’s a brown gooey “glue”, guaranteed not to leak if you apply to both sides

    Great video! My M3’s transmission grinds pretty bad going from 1st to 2nd gear, and only sometimes in the other gears.
    After watching this I really need to study more and figure out exactly what is wrong with it before I start tearing it apart. Any recommendations?

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suggest you take it apart like I did and see if you have bad synchros, but I’m interested to know what your issue is.

    • @MotorMouth930
      @MotorMouth930 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Likely bad synchros. In which case you will need a donor trans since no new parts are available for the 420g.

    • @Stratos_
      @Stratos_ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MotorMouth930 I think my goal is to find a relatively low mile SMG trans and use my bellhousing + parts off my current one to do 6-speed conversion on it. Since the SMG gearboxes go a little cheaper.

    Here’s a question for you - how much radial play is acceptable in the output flange? Feels like mine has developed maybe 1-2 thou of radial play that I don’t remember being there when I put it in… follow up question to that - any idea where to get a replacement output shaft bearing?

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey not sure where the internal components can be purchased but radial play should be nil. I see where you’re going that the bearing may be bad but failure of the bearings like that do not lend to radial play necessarily. Thats loss of material of the ball bearings. May be something else

    • @charliemonster42
      @charliemonster42 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the quick reply - amazing! I’m trying to track down a bad vibration at 45mph. It’s speed dependent and semi-load dependent, too. It will get slightly smoother with added load in either direction - loading up with the pedal or coasting - and is worse when lightly loaded cruising.
      Transmission is in an e34 with an s52. Had to custom build a transmission mount and I think we missed the alignment slightly. It was really bad when I first put the car together, so we modified it to correct the misalignment I measured at the time. It smoothed out and was fine for a few thousand miles but then slowly got bad again. Initial thought was that the misalignment would’ve gotten corrected to not be noticeable but the mileage has worn something out - immediate suspect was the spigot bushing in the driveshaft - but this radial knocking in the flange was an unexpected find. I’ll still chase down the alignment to eliminate it, but I’m not optimistic…

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@charliemonster42 Is it RPM Dependent? or only occurs with the gear engaged? Do you have a dual mass flywheel? Thinking you have a flywheel issue.

    • @charliemonster42
      @charliemonster42 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @garageaholic no - it’s wheel speed dependent, happens in any gear and with the clutch disengaged. It’s a lightweight single mass flywheel. Driveshaft is brand new custom made to fit the longer trans, so it’s unlikely to be that, too. Guibo looks perfect, haven’t laid eyes on the csb yet but I expect the same.
