  • A hunt over two afternoons on my Roman field with the CTX 3030. Plenty of finds and a nice surprise at the end of the rainbow. Also using the GPS to record and track finds.

    Hi Sam Sowards, cant reply directly to your post for some reason. I always just clean the coins with toothbrush and demineralised water only as like to keep them as originally found complete with the patina then preserve them with wax. I know what you mean about the detail but many rare coins have been ruined by buffing up to try and see more and the historical value is lost. Just something I do.

    The other thing is of course, you are the first person in 1700/1800 years to touch those grots. Their virtual zero value means nothing at all compared to that moment of touching them for the first time. Like shaking hands almost with a Roman

    its amazing what you can do with a 2 thousand pound detector and unlimited travel funds and the time to go with it . Now i know where i have been going wrong lol

  • @MrJamespetts

    That's a shame your fields got hawked. Your selling me the ctx more and more. Joan Allen are still doing a deal with a 6" coil so I'm very tempted.

  • @MrNooneseesme
    @MrNooneseesme 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes quite possible - without water there would be no life, obviously that applies to other things as well, but water is number one. Perhaps the land was fertile and well used and the coins might have also been an offering to nature on a broader sense. Ther Romans had terrible problem with inflation because they just minted as much base metal coins as they wanted, so the value become ever less. thats why throwing base metal coins away didnt really loose them much at all.

    In your description of the field and that portion of it in which you find Roman artifacts, I can't help noticing it works out to be a square parcel....you said 100-150 yards. I think there is a possibility it is a Roman encampment. Roman soldiers used to build square bermed camps to give them protection from local enemies. They often had these smaller camps strung out along roads...of which you said one side was a Roman track. I read the comments and someone said you usually find low value coins...well soldiers aren't paid a lot. That ridge across the field could be a 1600-1900 yr old eroded berm from the camp!

    • @malcolmpotter
      @malcolmpotter  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The part of the field where the finds produced are next to the spring and between two Roman Villas. Its right in the corner where the Roman road carries on across the spring and spring pond. The ridge is an old field boundary that was ploughed up many years ago. This boundary stops at the old medieval road that bisects the field showing the ridge post dates the road and also carries on into the next field the other way across the spring. Worth having an open mind that's how you narrow in on the hot spots. I am always open to suggestions. Thanks for the comment.

      There are a good range of cheaper models but you need to select the right one for the way and where you are going to hunt. PM for further advise with your budget if you wish.

    Do you think this was a shrine site? So many low value coins over so many years? The gold is beauty. I get the idea that that sort of extreme mix is a sign of a shrine? Perhaps there was something there and they tossed a low value coin to appease the gods, except a wealthy person who perhaps was more determined to get the gods attention with gold

    very nice find,happy for you,such an amazing coin,if any one is interested the coin is early first century with a valuation between £1700-£2000,malcolm may i ask what you sold it for?

      I never sell my finds just add to my collection. I inherited my Grandfathers coin collection and that's what started my interest in coins and artefacts then bought my first detector in 80's and the rest is history LOL

      I am using my Roman program. Ferrous coin, combined tones, deep OFF fast ON as a generalisation. Full details of the program are posted on minelabowners.com forum if you are a member. Also now using the CTX6 coil, great depth and gets amongst the iron.
