Completely understandable. A passionate feeling that you have put your best friend first before yourself with this choice. He knows what’s best for him. Also, with something so simple as a bathroom that can make things complicated and uncomfortable without one. Hope you can sell the camper easily and start your new plan soon! Will be looking forward to following the adventure! Safe travels!🙂

I made the mistake of selling a camper a few years back that my dog was very happy to camp and hang out in. She has been super un happy camping in the new one, a pop up. We are also on the hunt for a new camper this year! Can’t wait to see what you find :)

I LOVED your Basecamp! It seemed to be both small enough and big enough. I can see the advantage of not having to tow anything, being able to park anywhere and drive anywhere, but if you aren’t comfortable in it then none of that really matters. If money wasn’t an obstacle, what do you think would be the perfect vehicle for you and the pets?

Oh wow that’s a good question. Probably a TruckHouse. Love those

Why don't you find a 5 year old motor home ? With a car trailer with a mid-size vehicle ?
Most of the problems are solved within the first 3 years. I'd prefer a gasoline engine over a diesel.
Diesel engines are very expensive to repair. Fuel costs more than gas. There is more maintenance with the gasoline engine. Over 100,000 miles, you will have more money in your pocket. Happy travels

I miss the Base Camp! You all looked so happy in it so I just had this feeling the truck wouldn't work. At least you gave it a try. Best of luck deciding what set up to get next. We have to keep Jasper & Napolean happy!!! I have missed seeing you on your channel. Best wishes!!

One reason you're good at this TH-cam thing is that even your early morning, pre-coffee "rambles" are pretty structured and understandable (i.e. they're not "ramble-ly" at all). Good luck on finding the perfect camper! Wish I was in a position to buy this one from you, but alas...🙂

Been following your channel for about a year. Discovered it when researching the Airstream Basecamp. I personally felt that going from the BC to the camper was a major downgrade -- smaller, no shower, no toilet, can't leave it behind to run errands, etc. Also feeling bad for Napolean missing out as a result! You put SO much work into the Basecamp, only to sell it -- and now the same goes for the camper -- so much time and work, only to sell it. And the Tundra was another pain point. Yeeesh... But hey, valuable lessons were learned, right? I'd say go for the larger Basecamp! Best of luck on your future adventures.

I love that you take Jasper and Napoleon's happiness into consideration. We're actually stationary for a while because our two dogs are very old and losing mobility and they no longer travel well at all.

Good for you Cass. I never did think this truck camper was right for you, Jasper and Napoleon, but sometimes you have to just take the journey. I am curious to see what you wind up with. I am currently shopping for my retirement rig for 2.5 years out. I went to the Tampa RV show last month and saw a TON of truck campers. I am with you, gotta have a bath of some sort (wet or dry) with a shower. It's a Goldilocks thing. Not too big and not too small. Best of luck! I'll be watching. Cheers.

But must be disappointing, albeit understandable (couldn’t stand to see my pookie uncomfortable either). Of course the saving Grace is all you’ve learned with the experience. You are doing the right thing ! Never know unless u try for yourself, keep experimenting. Remember the more you are forced to do without the simple things in life, then the more life becomes complicated. Make your list of what you no longer will do without and THAT is your starting point for your next adventure. Big Hug !

Jasper is such a wonderful pup and Cass you are an awesome Dog momma ❤️. Jasper is big boy, totally understand his anxiety in such a small space. Like you said you learned a lot in the process. Really missed you guys the 9mos you were renovating the camper. I know you will be much happier to have more room. See a lot of campers using different size bins in their cabinets while traveling, maybe that's an option in your next rig to keeping stuff from shifting about. Stay positive it's all a learning experience. Plus I think you have a great truck for your next camper. So you're halfway way there. ..😉 good luck on your sale/ search.

You have a propane tank, so you should consider an incinerator toilet, they're expensive, but are basically odorless and the waste is dry ashes; which can be thrown in the trash. They're small, but around $2,000-$5,000.

All the best with your way forward. Getting a van may be safer- going from the back to front to drive away. This is not the direction you seem to want to go (no shower or toilet), but I'm seeing no-build minivans as a "thing" now. All the best to you!

now that you have all that hauling capacity of the 3500, have you considered pulling the truck bed off and replacing it with a flatbed and then getting a flatbed camper? The additional space of those really adds up and I think it would get you very close to where you were with the Base Camp Airstream.

Always awesome to see you out and about! Pros and cons of campers and trailers hopefully you figure it out! It sure seems like you and your pets were more comfortable in your trailer and you definitely have the horse power to pull something a lil bigger or another base camp. Trailers can be a pain sometimes and you only can go so big with campers before they get to top heavy for what you like to do. I know you will figure it out but it’s always more fun watching you and the pets on your adventures! Good luck with whatever you decide. Just make sure you and your pets are comfortable that’s your home away from home.

We had a Scout Yoho for 3 months we waited 9 months for. Took it across Canada through California then home. Sold it because it was to small and we no longer had a truck bed for gear. We then purchased a nucamp 400 lithium package, and have spent a month and a half in West Texas around Big Bend and Del Rio, enjoying the warm weather. Snow snow snow back home. All that to say, bravo on your decision, and I’m not surprised. You love your kids. 😊 I’m personally looking at the Basecamp 16X for us, and I’ve wandered through so many possibilities. I’m anticipating my girl leaving sooner than later, which breaks my heart, but I want her to be the happiest possible, and a larger space like the Basecamp (for just us two) is pretty ideal. Anything bigger than the 16 and it’d be a pain to tow. My tow vehicle has an 11k limit, so weight isn’t an issue, more so maneuverability. I’m glad you learned so much on this build, and you’ll have absolutely zero issues selling it. Looking forward to your next road! 😄👍🏼

It can be a little disappointing to put all this work into something only to sell it very soon after, but it's completely understandable! It's great that you have your (fur) children's best interests at heart! I wouldn't worry about the tininess and nimbleness as much; as long as all three of you are happy, safe and comfortable, that's all that matters! I was worried about the bathroom situation - it can be hard to adjust to not having one when you're so used to the convenience of having one to use! I don't think that I could live in a rig without a functional bathroom!

To answer your question, only absolutely great things come next because you deserve them. You've done a wonderful job demonstrating the pros and cons of having this type of rig. So if you are feeling some type of way about it not working out, just write it off as doing public service, "I did it for the people". :) Personally this little camper gave me a bit of anxiety (precisely because of toilet/bath situation) when you got it but, at the same time, I absolutely loved your reasoning for getting the big truck and was sold on the idea. For someone who is clueless about any sort of independent travel you've been a great inspiration for me personally because normally there are these videos of 'everything done super right (usually by a dude ), dogs dont get nervous nor need personal space and everything is super great and look at me etc' but then I cant relate and, most importantly, learn nothing; with you - I do and I send you my wholehearted appreciation for it.

I get the pet thing. My animals are my kids. But... Everything you went through to get this RARE camper, fix this RARE camper, I'm crushed for you! Why I don't know, I feel very disappointed. I love rare finds. Found a gem in the hay myself. "Elsie" is our 1984 pop-up truck camper, Skamper. I did the same thing you did and more. We also have a large RV that we use most of the time. Elsie is safely tucked away in one of our garage bays when we are not using her. We use her when we take our Ranger Side-by-side trail riding, but not all the time. To give her up would crush me (ok that would never happen) considering it was a labor of love to get her out of the barn where we found her and put her back on the road and fit for 2022 and beyond. So my heart is crushed that you need to give her up, I'm sure yours is too..but I get it 😞

Elsie sounds like an amazing rig! I am not too crushed, as I know this is the right move and I’ve learned so much over the last year. Very excited for whatever comes next, and happy with the camper’s new owner. I hope it gives him many years of amazing adventures.

Back in 1985 I owned a truck camper for about two weeks while working in the mountains of NM. Quickly traded it in for a Boler camper, still have the Boler and would never go back to using a truck camper.
Hope you still have the Basecamp.

Ahhh, look at you. I mean, you care so much for Jasper and his happiness. You have a HUGE heart!! Maybe sell the RAM too. Buy a new setup with Tundra or Tacoma and (bigger) Airstream?? Just not sure you will find a camper that will suit Jasper's needs. I mean, maybe, but ??? Merci

Dog boots: RUFFWEAR has tough vibram soles and also a mesh top of the boot for ventilation, velcro fastening strap. The first few times you try, the dog acts "funny" and might not even want to walk, but he will become accustomed to them. Very short trials at first, some dogs do goose step walking at first. Learn on grass if you can. 😊 Best wishes

Understandable, as soon as we saw no shower or bathroom we knew the end was near. The Basecamp offered much more but missed the video where you sold it. I thought you were keeping it and the truck camper was just for Overlanding. Best of luck with whatever new rig you find.

I’m sort of heartbroken for you. You turned this TC into such a beautiful rig and I know how much you were looking forward to traveling in it. I hope you find the perfect camper SOON so you can get back to doing what you love.

  • @patriot3820
    @patriot3820 ปีที่แล้ว

the positive of it all is - you definitely have the truck to move up to a larger truck camper if you wanted to stay in that type of rig. There are campers designed somewhat minimalist, and still not giant. The Cirrus 620 for example would be great but doesn't have a shower (has a cassette toilet); the Cirrus 720 has a shower and black tank but they're out of production (and had all sorts of issues). Hardest part honestly will be to find a shower-model that doesn't weigh over 3000lbs. You could always take something like the 620 and retrofit it with a internal shower (but they're also expensive, as most of the truck campers are nowadays)
    good luck in the search!

I've had 4 p/u campers over the last 50 years.I have had lite ones heavy ones etc I have found if you keep the weight under 2k life will be easier. And get one with or retro[2400] electric jacks.when you are loading high enough to clear your truck you don't want to be standing a foot away from what looks like an elephant on flamingo legs.pucker factor 10!

You have tried a trailer, you've done a pick up truck with a camper shell, what are your feelings on a van style rig? Perhaps a large 4x4 Sprinter or Ford Transit? I noticed that you mentioned the issue with the rattling with the cabinets and other fixtures and how that bothers Jasper. Speaking as a DIY type person, and someone who has worked in Ambulances for 20 years I know that properly securing cabinets and equipment absolutely CAN be accomplished. There are a million different strategies and techniques to make a van quiet as well as comfortable, so don't let that be the only reason why you won't consider it. Love the channel, and thank you Cass.

every style of mobile living has it's advantages and disadvantages.
for me pulling even a small camper trailer just seemed exhausting... maybe stressful..... Camping days were nice.... travel days not so much....
My Rialta is nice ... but being remote camping.... then needing something from town meant breaking camp ... until I got a little scooter.... but again now more concerns and weight on travel days

We've thought about getting a truck camper but so far have stuck to our 29ft 10 inch fifth wheel. We have a Grand Design Reflection 260RD and it is great for boondocking. Sometimes I think I want the nimbleness of a truck camper on our FWD truck to get really back in the boonies but it is just not enough to be willing to do without the space and conveniences of home. If I really want to get off road and far back in there I can take a tent. Most the time we want to stay withing 30 minutes of the main roads and within an hour of town. I can do that with my 260RD just fine.

Ironicly, you just answered a question I had about the Basecamp and off-roading. The search for something self-contained in a truck camper is a bit hard, as you know, and yet the trailers built for off-roading do not have many of the "creature comforts" that us older people want. Like you, our search for the "meets our needs" rig is changing. Hope your rig sells quickly and that your next adventure is a good one. Until next time... Travel safe.

    • @TailsofWanderlust

Thanks for sharing Cass. I hate that you have to get rid of it but I totally understand. One of your previous videos you mentioned there was no bathroom and I thought 'how is she going to stay on extended trips in it?'. You did such a good job on the renovation. Hopefully you get a good profit out of it, I'm sure you will.
