Two contractors work on renovating a home's staircase, which was previously in bad shape. They discuss and show the demolition process for removing the old stairs. Footage documents the rebuilding process as they discuss and install new studs, plates, and stringers to frame out the new staircase. Additional details include hanging drywall, adding a handrail and bracket system, measuring tread depths, finishing trim work, and advice on techniques such as tapering strips to create smooth transitions between wall materials. The tutorial video provides information on best practices for stair building and remodeling.

One thing I really enjoy watching you guys is how you never hide from the required work to get it all done right-which will improve the lives going forward for everyone using the spaces you build. 💙
I agree. They never try to cut a corner, and seem to actually go out of their way to go a step beyond when the option is there
As I do small improvement projects around my house I find myself asking, “How would Jaime do this?”
WWJD
Or you summon your inner Arlo
then you talk about how much you love planers for 7 minutes
@@0x0michael It's actually 70min. The other 63min were cut out by Eric.
@@0x0michael I started with just a Stanley block plane, then bought a rabbeting block plane. Next I bought a number 4 smoothing plane and liked it so much, I got a number 5 1/2 jack plane.
Seeing the shavings curl is just so satisfying.
LET RAY TALK😂😂😂😂😂, there is nobody else on social media like you guys,my husband has been a carpenter since the age of 15, and he is now 48, and is a dedicated watcher and fan, and yes i have been brought into the fold as well, but im just a writer and an artist, I couldn't build a a box if I tried, anyway thank you guys for all you do and keeping my man motivated,,, and yes LET RAY TALK MORE,😂😂😂😂 love you guys and keep up the great work you do,
To be fair, to make a proper square box it takes quite a lot of skill and experience. Or 200 clamps, a lot of glue and a year's worth of sandpaper.
@@OperationDarkside 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣thanks for the tip I'll remember that,
I had a pet termite when I was a kid. I named it Clint, Clint eats wood! 😂
hahahaha😆
Oh it was definitely audible.
"They got about halfway and we realized it wasn't going good"...Jason just hits it harder...
I love how everyone on the crew contribute solutions to the problems encountered during a build. Anyone who hires the Perkins bunch is very lucky🍀 to have them. Very talented men. This project was full of problems, surprises and very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I would have shimmed out that joist or girder beneath the girder for attaching the drywall. That tapered shim situation seems no bueno.
Our house is 84 years old. Everything was fully sheathed. Exterior and interior walls. Sturdy as hell, but changing any wiring is a challenge.
My house is 105 years old.
This is literally my favorite show on TH-cam. Soo good.
Hilti makes a device similar to what you’re trying to do. Uses a piece of uni stut and some concrete anchors. Works like a charm. And yes. You can get split jamb doors without the trim.
I appreciated that info about the termites lol
This was one of the best vids. IMO is much more involved to do a good job on something like this than to build a home from scratch. In my previous house in NJ had severe termite damage and I had to rebuild the entire front wall of the house and brought it back to new construction level with my father. Fun times.
Seeing the fun Jamie and Eric have on together on site makes me wish my brother joined me being a carpenter at our old man’s company. Seems like heaps of fun
“This should really stiffen it up and get it feeling good” either a quote from Eric with Perkins Construction or Eric with Perkins Bordello.
In the Netherlands if we build a wall in side we sometimes used osb under need the dry wall. This is so you can Puth everywhere a tv ore a painting without the dry wall plugs.
On the stair you could build a return for more support... say a 10 or 12 inch stem wall, and in the resulting alcove have shelves for books, or knicks and knacks. Or in this case, since you have a wall two feet away, build a set of two-foot structural shelves fastened to the adjacent wall. On the free-standing end of a stem wall I've cut a hole in the floor, and extended the end post 4x4 down into the 3 foot crawl-space where I dug a shallow pit, lying on my side, poured a sack of ready-mix, topped that with a pier, and fastened the post to it.
@14:03: Another method for stiffening the bottom of the railing: Drill into the concrete, set rebar in epoxy, set the wood on the rebar on a drilled hole.
Man, that's a lot of money for a weather rock. I got mine out of they yard. Cost me like .10 cents in string. Hasn't failed me yet. 😂
Jamie I did work for a contractor who always sheeted his kitchens under the drywall so he never guessed at stud locations. I thought it was a little to much bet he really believed in it. All 3/4 ply. He also always had us rip 1/2 ply by 2 1/2 inches and nailed it on all the walls. Then drywalled from there up. Always had solid material to nail base board to.
I order my split jams without trim attached and install the trim after. I also shim the bottom and top hinges and behind the strike plate. And usually use trim head screws on the hinges side
I hope you show us the completed project after it is all done.
In Sweden we sheet all the walls with 1/2” osb before drywall 🤟. No blockning needed 😊. Seriously, i have been a builder since 1998 and i have never just put drywall directly on the studs yet 😅. You gotta step up over there 😁
Not seen anything between drywall and studs other than glue in over 50 years.
It takes less time to just put drywall on the studs than to put on OSB, then drywall.
@@CNB_YT captain obvious over here 😄
Same in Norway... but to be honest, I think that in the Nordics we overbuild a lot that doesn't need to be overbuilt… but it comes in handy when the 100-year storms soon arrive annually😬
The blocking is to prevent, or slow, the progression of fire, in the interior wall.
Jamie OCD on full display!!
Did a similar stair-eliminated one of the 2 x 4's, epoxied threaded 1/2" rod into concrete floor, metal plate w/1/2" hole at top overlapping other studs, lock washer and nut
I recently bought a commercial dehumidifier from Vevor based on this channel and holy crap, I cannot express how terrible it’s been.
It was broken out of the box, it had leaked all of the refrigerant and would run but didn’t dehumidify. This was a month ago and I started a case with their chat support (very difficult to find a number to call) I’ve been going back and forth with them for a month because every reply takes days.
I received a message from them today offering me $36.00 to keep the item rather than replace it. WTF!? Why would I want a broken dehumidifier that I paid $400 for if you give me 36 bucks back?
It’s been the worst customer support I’ve ever dealt with.
Love the channel and I am not blaming the Perkins Bros, this is just a warning. I personally will never buy anything from them again.
Very good job guys very good, but Hey, when you look at the other picture of what you had to start with. I know it's like it's almost endless. We're gonna have to build half a new house, but you're doing a great job. Thanks everybody for the video
Im with jamie on the door, that reveal would make me insane. And he doesnt like it, because hes a carpenter, he wants to do the wood work and leave a finish hes proud of.
Jamie's pronouns are not hes.
Always love watching what the Perkins crew is building!
You guys make me want to tear things apart and build!
Split jams are awesome. That’s all we’ve ever used. We do occasionally replace the trim on them
As always, a joy to watch. I am looking forward to watching your next adventure.
Right I love the laughter and the love and respect they have for each other and their clients, it's amazing how they carried on their fathers work, two men raised very well
In my area split jamb doors can be ordered without casing.I would definitely shim split jambs though since they move so much
Let Ray talk. After Jamie, it’s now his turn. Previous videos we can see him more
I use your building projects and apply some of your techniques to what I'm building or rehabbing. Still waiting for videos you guys can make, like how to use a router and it's bits. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
You guys really do work well on the fly. There are many variables and surprises in these type of projects. You got to be ready for anything
Just a small FYI regarding "I have a dream that one day we'll put sheathing on the entire inside of a house". That's actually how we usually build things here (Scandinavia, Sweden to be exact). Usually it's something like OSB on all the walls and then dry wall on top of that. At least the outer walls, but usually the other interior walls as well.
6:15 ohhh I heard it all right… Jono is hilarious😂
We worked on a mansion where we had 2x6 walls with 3/4 ply on both sides, house wrap on the outside, with strapping over wrap, at studs, with another 3/4 ply on top of the strapping to create air vent! Then covered outside with Revere wear copper siding, inside with cherry paneling ( also 3/4 inch )!! That’s 4 layers on all walls! It was only a 3 million dollar 1930’s Tudor Mansion that we threw 12 million more dollars at over 2 years!😮
You guys always do great! Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
About the interior sheathing Jaime talked about, I have it in my stud-based home in EU. Basically where we wanted to hang stuff, we put 12mm osb and 12mm drywall, other places we put 2 layers of drywall.
There's not a lot of material at the bottom. I had to trim one an inch I think and there was just a sliver left. So I took the piece I cut off pull the front and back side off leaving just the wood. A touch of sanding followed by removing dust adding glue sliding the solid piece in clamped it and put a couple of 18 gauge brads on each side. It's now the right height for the carpet and has a decent amount of wood at the bottom.
You all always do such fine work !! I LOVE YOU ALL @ P.B.B. !!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ray has been watching this old house for sure!
They make iron hold-downs to attach the framing to the foundation. We have to use them in CA on commercial buildings cuz of earthquakes and all.
When I built my house we sheeted the main cabinet wall with plywood that was equal thickness to the sheet rock. It was a great backer to hang cabinets from. Didn’t have to worry about missing blocking.
Hi, 👋 Love from mizoram me too a carpentry I learn a lots of things and easiest way to do things from your vedio .❤
When I was remodeling bedrooms, I tore the closets out and rebuilt them different. The insides got 1/2" sandeply instead of drywall. I wanted to be able to hang anything anywhere later. The surface was really smooth. I used joint compound at seams and such as if it was drywall. I was very happy with it.
Current weather at your house when you want weather miles away? Satellite apps.
Split jambs are for track houses
Beautiful carpentry 👍
In 1968 we were finishing my folks house in MN and the Jambs were split. I rather liked them.
Watching the video is very engaging and you learn something new!
You guys are fantastic builders, but you'd benefit from learning how to float a wall with a mud knife. I love watching your videos and I've learned many things from you. Nonetheless, mud finishing is not that scary and actually quite rewarding when you pull it off. Why do nearly all contractors and sub-contractors shy away from drywall finishing? I guess I shouldn't complain, that has given me an edge (ha ha!) in the business many times. At any rate I think the work you do and your channel's content are great. Keep it up!
Jono, that was totally audible and I love your sense of humor---"They are going to "master bait" it!" 🤭
Jamie I’m building your dream right now. Customer insists on every wall in his house is covered in 5/8 cdx plywood
I think remodeling is much harder than building new. If something is not right in the original build, you have to adjust at every step along the way
Great work ya'll; this isn't in the playlist with the other two episodes.
That Vevir thing is also great for children’s education
The best online weather is from Ryan Hall (Ryan Hall Y'all). I'm just a fan, not any other motive in that. Glad to see you all do a bit of reno. Very different from new home construction.
We use split jamb door all the time, we just finished a new build and order 14 split jamb doors with RB3 trim and solid core doors. They looked great and installed in no time. Our painters caulked and painted and they looked great.
Ive been thinking about ordering your tool belt, just have to get used to not wearing my old one.
Coming to you from Upstate SC, Only about an hour and some change from you guys.
Amazing job at knowing how far to go and a great job of rebuilding credit to everyone on this tricky intricate small necessary repair. Hope the homeowner knows that termite infestation is still active and gets proper treatment or repairs will shortly be destroyed. I would tent for peace of mind and to make sure I reached all infected areas. Ray Stormont
Great vid awesome tips
Nice editing btw Eric! That little tease at the beginning was funny and made us anticipate for what's to come. I don't know if you're still using Premiere to edit but the new updates are amazing, hope you get to use them in future uploads!
Nice job Ray! Good idea, well executed.
The bionic hand is sweet lol..
after watching you guys over the years, i had faith in your build skills. But, i tell you what i have never seen a set of stairs challenge you so much, have you forgotten how to build things? maybe we should put Jay in charge of the build next time, he sorted his own stair out quicker in his series, working part time.
You need only one such flying termite in your car for them to begin a colony in your house too!
I installed several of those split frame doors at my old house. Wacky opening widths, wacky everything. You do need to shim them, which can be difficult for wacky openings. But for the cost and ease they are great. Built a custom frame for one door, while it came out looking nicer, for me doing it DIY I don’t know if it would have been worth it if I didn’t have a specific need for how that door frame was set up.
That being said, if I were getting a custom home build, I would prefer them being built by hand (looks better, feels better, will probably last longer, way more options about finish, etc), but would also be ok with that being the place to cut a cost if need be.
I hope y’all show the finished. Job
Love your videos PBBs! Been watching consistently for over a year now. Are you going to release a finished office video for non-channel members? 😊
I have installed many doors with slip jambs and I shimmed them. The old guy I worked for said the thin side of the casing would split at the nails.
Jaime: and we might hang the drywall.
Erik: What?
I'm glad they let Ray talk🤣🤣
Put the weather station on your roof. Wind isn't blocked by building and full solar. That's where mine has been for years.
VEVOR is the most aggravating APP om the planet
I stay away from split jamb as it seems so often they aren’t treated well during shipping and they arrive with the trim all messed up. So I opt to do the trim separately. More work I guess but better than getting a damaged item and dealing with that.
Ray is the brains of the operation,
Good morning!🇵🇭
I would shim that door at hinge plates and striker if there is a gap.
So glad i found this channel
Hey congrats you guys are almost at 1 million subscribers. Must be doing something right!
Enjoyed watching great job as always.
Should used two pieces of 1/4” drywall!
2:30 - I can't even put in tapcon in straight. Doesn't go in more than like 1/4" before it "done". Breaks off if I don't stop when it twists the drill.
Do you predrill the hole? And use the proper drill?
@@1packatak hammer drill with a specified bit length and size. Vacuum out the hole.
I ended up using red head nail wedge anchors with the existing holes that didn't have broken off screws.
@@t3yf5g wild. I use tapcons and have never had issues. Your technique sounds perfect.
Should have made the anchor L beam shape longer coming up for better stiffness, but great idea !! 💡
You should mount that weather stations higher to get a accurate wind speed, since the house and trees mite block it, Also it would be cool if you did a 1 year review of the vevor product to see how they hold up over time.
GO RAY!!! The next Arlo!
I am a Master Stair Builder. That is a great job!!
You could have used 1/4”or 3/8” drywall on the face of that beam and saved yourself a bit of trouble.
If u want a metal bracket like that to stop wiggling put the cap con on a angle just above the 90
Thursday lunchtime fun watching another PBB video! Thanks Guys! KUTGW
Why not use pressure-treated outdoor-rated lumber to replace water-damaged and termite-damaged wood, and use regular lumber for the rest?
I make my split jams out of a door jam package u buy at HD ? Your matching the material? And I keep the extra for the next one if I get one ? Fairly rare ? Though fire doors more so ? From house to garage!
What is the robot fingers ? never mind i just noticed he lost hem. Pretty cool doing that work like. good for him
28 views and a day early….what a world!
ALMOST 1M SUBS WOO
Jono…..“They’re going to master bait it”……. Hahaha. Nice one mate 😂
What the hell Perky, we can't even get a tiny preview of the new build next week?
I know Arlo has retired, but I still keep looking for him LOL!
Hey guys 👍
Just hang an extra layer over the whole thing and the old stuff is automatically your shim out
