This video documents the process of excavating and laying out the footings for a house foundation. The crew uses a laser level to ensure all footings are dug to the proper depth. They mark out the footing locations, dig with an excavator, and square up the corners by hand. Reinforcing rebar is cut and bent into shape. Grade stakes are installed to lay out the wall locations. Some footings need extra soil removed to properly center the walls. By catching errors in the layout, extra work is avoided. Once the footings are fully excavated, the site is prepared for laying the concrete.

Wow, what an opportunity to have a client with his own excavation/earthworks company. Not only do you have experts doing all of the very complex earthworks and footing for that incredibly complex house layout (even clearing out all the soil to get it our of your way), you get to watch and learn sooo much from true pros! Man...if you could even find that kind of training somewhere you couldn't afford to put your entire crew through the training. What a gift. That apprentice is truly getting his summer's worth of learning and experience! And of course you're building a relationship with someone who will be an amazing contact for both subbing out complex jobs to and consulting with on excavation and footing jobs you're doing yourselves.
What an exciting project. That house with that view is going to be absolutely amazing...

Flour is a genius idea. It’s so visible. This house is going to be awesome! As a 22 year old general contractor, I can’t wait for the day I get to take on a project this size!
It's not a genious idea, it's dumb. They could have used lime, it's very visible and it's not a food ingredient.
FYI, next time you want to see if something fits, place a 4x8 sheet on the ground and do an aerial photo with your drone. Then you can photoshop that known dimension around to see if it all fits before you set pins and such. This helps on uneven terrain as all you have to do is make sure the face of the 4x8 sheet is level.
Unless you know exactly what you are doing, lenses induce distortion. There are methods of making things appear completely flat so that one can trace in CAD.

@hebdschnure This is for the initial layout, not for actual locations.. Take the picture from high enough, and right over the center should be just fine.

My father built swimming pools for 20 years and he used flour to layout the pools before digging so home owners could have a visual of what it would look like. It was a great way to help them see it.
Having just dug my own footings recently for the first time I can really appreciate watching a pro work. It's one thing to understand what needs to happen, it's a completely different thing to get the machine to do it, and then a whole other level to get it to do it smoothly and efficiently.

I always get jealous when I see you only go down 12" for footings instead of 44" here in Montana. Then I remind myself that we don't have termites and that makes me happy again.

Can you not go even less in Montana with shallow frost protected foundation?

Great video. Just a tip when cutting rebar like L bars we always allow 40 x diameter for splice in Europe so a 10 mm L bar should have at least a 400 mm splice.

Jason is a tank. Might take a minimum 2 guys to replace the muscle he brings to the job. Always doing the toughest jobs. I know they don't 'make' him and would all gladly do it themselves, but he always seems willing and is just so much more capable.
He brings a lot to the site with his strength and spirit lol.

99% of our houses are slab on grade here in Phoenix, Arizona. We just drop our grades on the outside of buildings, patios are poured 4-6” lower than top of interior slab, grading drops a couple inches off of that. We mostly have stucco though, so as long as the weep screed is not buried we dont have to worry as much. Very dry climate as well. In most buildings this ends up as having 6- 12” of stem wall or side of the slab (if monolithic) showing above grade before you hit weep screed for the stucco. As long as the grade flows away from the house we rarely have issues.

As an ex-builder here in Oz, we always used lime for mark outs. Even if it got wet it was still easily visible (not sure if Johno would survive lime though🤣) I sure miss my building days & even though I am near retirement (& currently unemployed) I've been considering pulling the nail bag back on even if it is just part time building maintenance. Been looking forward to this build since seeing the plans, I love different stuff! 👍

Happiness is having a customer who is a dirt contractor. Two machinists running while your setting up layouts and his crew is also doing erosion mitigation i.e. planning grass.

Looks like a BIG house. In the southern UK, most footings have to be 3 feet / 1 metre deep. I was managing my friends non-conforming building repurposing. The contractors were there for 4 days and I dismissed them, for only going down 1 foot to avoid them moving a drain. Daft thing was they put a piece of wood panelling over it in an attempt to hide it. Once again in the UK we had to check the noise on our gearboxes, using a sound meter. At that time we had to be 1.5 metres from the gearbox to record the noise level. Take care and be safe 👍

Built many foundations for modular homes in SW Virginia and NW Tennessee and our man who does our excavation has a hell of a time digging through all the slate rock and it beats his equipment to death. The hardest muddy part of the job, after that it all seems like cake.
My mistake NE Tennessee we work around about a hundred mile radius of Bristol TN.

Tim from awesome framers orders pre-bent corners from his supplier. I think he said it doesn’t cost that much more and saves a lot of time. Maybe something to think about on bigger houses like this if the cost is negligible.
With how its cut into the hillside, it looked like that outline was superimposed onto the video rather than actually outlined.

Trick for bucket down smoothing: set the bucket height and bladed perfectly using the leading edge, then simply back up gently.
So much to take in on this episode. The view ❤ the amazing help (from the client) with earth work is such a bonus and hopefully your getting some great hints on how to work the earth. For edging those trenches I like an Ace Hardwear "Ace 41.5 in. Steel Garden Spade Wood Handle" that I sharpen with a bastard file. Cuts straight lines like butter. Fabulous for cutting grass out during irrigation work, and other edging tasks.
First thing I thought of when seeing the flour distribution is baseball field lines. Maybe pick up a line marker somewhere and use it rather than manually measuring and dumping

Jamie, not unheard of. Down in south Florida everything is CMU unfortunately in the older house it’s either plaster or just 3/4 strips up the cmu on the interior for drywall. Some new houses will be kind enough to put the treated furring strips along with the treated 1x6 down low so you have something to nail into.

Loving the new build, it may be an idea to get this chap to do all of your digging. In the future. The time you would save in having a professional digging, the footings against the hire of a digger for a week may be advantageous unless of course you use Jasons bulldozer shuffle, Move, LOL. Like everybody else I’m watching your channel from the UK it’s just bloody different how you guys do it over there?

If you paint the 24” rebar at the foot mark, you could have a visual reference where to stop hammering them into the ground. Making it less time consuming measuring for accuracy.
That wouldn’t work. They are all different because the grade varies from each pin. That’s why they call them grade pins. The tips of them all end at the same grade/evel

These guys are so interesting and entertaining I could watch them all day! I actually have. Also Jamie's early 2000s Silverado looks to be in immaculate condition. It's my favorite generation, and I never see them anymore because they've all rusted to powder by now in upstate NY.

In Kashmir, we use POP
instead of flour to mark because it is inexpensive and doesn't wash away when it rains

Get a line marker from a sporting goods store. You can still use the flour in that.
Could you get a striper for ball fields and just fill it with flour? I just took a look and not very expensive.
You could pour your flour in an empty dried out laundry detergent bottle, it would pour easier, ive been watching 5 minute crafts👍. Great videos BTW
Just a suggestion of what might make the flour a little bit easier. Maybe put it in one of those things that they use on baseball fields to line the fields. Just string a line and walk the entire line. Might save your guys backs. Just a thought. Love the channel.

I used to be a heavy equipment operator from Pennsylvania. The first thing we learned is how to use a laser. The plans depict how we do footers in pa. Its much easier to grade the stone. You can order the rebar cut and bent to any shape and langth you need

My grandfather was a surveyor and I remember him teaching me some of it. #1 thing was to never "grip" the sight pole because griping it can induce a little tilt, but if you create a ring with your 2 hands around the pole and you get the pole to basically balance itself (letting gravity level it)....it will always be perfectly vertical. Thou this was forever ago and the one you're using doesn't look like that's even feasible.....maybe add a counter balance to the reader?

A great way for marking with flour without breaking your back is by using a can on a stick. Drill holes on the bottom of the can, hang it at the end of a stick and then just use it as a salt shaker.

Y'all need to get a grass seeder and just buy flour in commercial bulk size. Its cheaper and you'll get straighter lines. Using cooking flour though is a good idea.
...and it will also be easier on the lower back.

Wouldn't think you would want rust from the grade stakes migrating up into the footing. Wouldn't a different material other than steel rebar be better?
