    I Razed a tower, stole their books and put them in my library, seemed fine to have a necromancer fort until a thief started a fight deep inside the fort. Suddenly frame rates dropped to nothing as everyone kept resurrecting bodies and parts of bodies, some of which were intelligent and still hostile. 140 dwarves in constant congested combat caused me to retire the fort.

      I had once slaughtered a lot of rams to keep the population down. But then a visiting necromancer got scared by a surprise goblin climbing out of my moat. So he proceeded to reanimate about a 100 pieces of wool. The following pile of people trying to bludgeon living wool took a 15 minutes to process, and release my framerate from its hostage

      Your story is very reminiscent of mine. I wanted to have a pet necromancer, yet there was no need for tower raiding - for some reason my Dwarven civilization, The Bell of Vaults, had necromancers imbued. One necro just came with the migrant wave, Necromancer diagnostician. I created a special squad consisting out of one hero warrior, clad her into iron, bought her a flail. Wanted to have a Witch-King of my own, stupid fool.
      Then I wanted to have books with secrets of the life and death. My initial plan when I was starting fort was to create a tower like Tower of Babel. So it could be impossible huge, a spire of dwarven might and ingenuity. I had a necromancer tower like 3 days of travel NE of my site. So I sent a trained squad, Silvery Hammerers, to raid the place. Our kingdom was at war with humans, my Hammerers also raided their villages.
      My soldiers gloriously overpowered necromancers, their armor and hammers overcoming lies, illusions and magic of unworthy Deathbenders. It was a sign from Armok himself "look, you don't need those books". I never listened. Books were secured at closed section of library, then I noticed that my dwarves started to turn necromancers. What sorcery is this? - I shouted. We dug a nice treasure room with huge pit and little island in the center, I put pedestals there and Necronomicons. Then I found that soldiers brought a scroll with Necromancy and I was unable to put a scroll on pedestal. The number of necromancers was already 12. I dumbed the scroll and walled it off.
      My plan had a one necromancer in mind, 12 was too many. So I made a squad out of them. I thought to occupy the tower, sending unwanted necros there so they wouldn't accidentally ruin my mega project. Then the humans came, a band of 20-30 warriors, they wanted a parley, I thought they want those stupid necrobooks, they could have them. Yet they attacked my citizens, killing children playing in the fields.
      Burrows were activated and soldiers equipped. Yet I forgot that I send necromancers on their journey. They clashed in stupid way - humans shot a few of my bunnies... necromancer raised them. Human army ran away in fear, leaving a few child-killing scouts in their place. My warriors killed them and then the Hell was let loose. Necromancers were raising bodies, soldiers killing them. I thought their silver hammers will mangle zombies so they wouldn't be able to reanimate. I was wrong. My fortress is stuck in constant reanimation and fighting.

  • @PcKaffe
    @PcKaffe ปีที่แล้ว +86

    I would suggest for anyone regardless of pc to play at least once on a really small embark because it forces you to think and plan vertically something that will help a lot with fortress design on bigger maps. It's very common to see endless hallways of rooms on 1-2 z levels that probably should be stacked on top of eachother a lot more.

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Using vertical space is also great for reducing travel time. I've taken to building bedrooms in "towers" rather than sprawling dormatories. It's much quicker for a dwarf to travel down a 6 z-level staircase than it is for them to traverse a 30 tile long hallway. Line it up right and you can have it so where a dwarf is never more than 6 spaces away from a temple *and* the tavern.

    Oh my, so glad I watched this video. I was puzzled to the point of frustration why my open space dumping area never seemed to work. • @Schismatise
      @Schismatise ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not that it needs to be two tiles. It's just that you designate the tile the dwarf will stand on when dumping the item, and then they will prioritise dumping it into any empty space adjacent to that designated tile, including diagonals, and if there is no adjacent empty space then they will dump it on that designated tile. So in the video, he could have only designated the tile next to the open hole as the dump zone and they would still throw everything down the hole.
      PS. When you're designating a zone for an activity, it will tell you how many tiles you have selected are valid for that activity, so you can paint and unpaint tiles to check if they are valid.

    I'd like to point something out for your gaming computers, DON'T RUN IN 4K RES!
    Just because you can run the latest stuff in 4k 120fps, that's not going to work in Dwarf fortress in my personal experience.
    The problem is if you have your desktop res set to 4K, and the game to 1080p (1920x1080) The game doesn't go full screen even if I set the Game to full screen, it just stays windowed, and going full screen with F11 on it is just as bad as 4K performance wise.
    So. change your Desktop res to 1920X1080, and run the game on the same res.
    change it back when you're done ;)
    This will bump up your entire game by a huge margin.
    It almost got me to quit the game before I realized this.

      That sounds like placebo to me honestly? Dwarf fortress is heavily CPU bottlenecked, so things like resolution shouldn't affect performance nearly at all.

    Hands down the best DF video for a beginner (me), my first proper fortress is now at 198 pop and my framerate is at 12-15...
    I have over 2000 stones, 3000 blocks and god knows how many items of all kinds, laying around in enormous stockpiles... While playing on a map with constant rain and I'm living inside a Volcano...
    Turning of Weather and Temperature brought it up to 35 fps, which is at least playable. But next fort will be 2x2 map instead of 3x5, and I'm rethinking everything I've taught myself about stairs and dumping items...

  • @lyagushkha8490
    @lyagushkha8490 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    From my experience, there are different types of FPS problems.
    For CPU framerate, your video is surely true, it helps a lot. But, with new release, DF gained another problem; graphical fps performance. There are some setups, which include some nvidia graphical cards, that simply do not work well, or at all with steam release.
    In those cases, frame death can occur very realistically. Even with goodhardware setups, small embark and world sizes, pop cap eing low and management of items, game may become unplayable, even when paused.
    The general rule I've found that helps combat that is to have as little of textures/entities on screen at one time as possible.
    This means building as much vertically as possible, not building surface forts, having as little of big stockpiles as possible (either keeping things in workshops or maaaybe using quantum stockpiles), as well as not centering your forts around one big meeting zone, since that z-level may become unsee-able when heavily occupied by animals and dwarves.
    Game is crazy good, but it needs some serious optimization work done. As of now, it is near unplayable for some people who should be able to run it no problem with hardware they got.

    First watch missed his comment that this only works in trade tab and not in stocks tab. he said you can trade it off. My apologies. The "search" by "X" tip does not work, he showed it on screen between 17:00 minutes and forward. When x was in search, only showed ibex pants and when he took it out their were x(cave spider silk pants)x on screen. Also found this to be true when I tried it. It would not show all x(item)x items. But knowing to get rid of them is still a very useful tip. Thanks for the videos blind!!!

    • @Seekay37

      Yeah search only cares about the name of the item, more specifically the original item type name. You can't for example search for named items at all either, you have to search for their type, for example if it's a crown you have to type in crown instead of its name. I hope they improve that

    pretty sure you only need the one square next to a cliff or pit, zoned for dumping for the dwarf to stand on and they auto throw into a hole if there is one adjacent. apparently sometimes they might also jump (maybe fall?) in if the hole itself is zoned too.

      This answers a problem I had with a recent fort. It had a large dump zone outside for dumping remains mostly, and there was a single 1x1 natural pond next to the dump zone. The dwarves would always go to the square next to that one, even though it wasn't designated in any way, to dump stuff into it, even if meant a much longer trek. This must have been why!

    Here's a tip from me, don't wall in werebeasts or vampires, find a way to kill them asap. A walled in werebeast that is affected by some form of strange mood will completely destroy the framerate while it's trying to escape.
    My werepanda woman dropped my fps from 110 to 17, and I had to sit there and create waterflow into her chamber then wait a torturous amount of time for my entire moat to be filled to 7/7, and it was just miserable tbh.

    Could you expand a little bit about stairs pathfinding? Or link to a resource talking about it?
    While I have been playing DF since before the 3D z-level, I don't usually check forums or advanced discourse, just the wiki when I'm stuck with new things and playing by myself. And that point about stairs might explain part of my fps issue on very fast computers this past half decade.
    I'm usually doing a central 3x3, with a row of 3 Up stairs, then a middle row of floors (ideally glass floors to bring in some light), then a row of 3 Down stairs. Slightly longer to walk, but it avoids a creature falling down 30 z-levels (as dwarves tend to do a lot) and other benefits for exploratory digging into caves. It should have even lass pathfinding options than your cross pattern, but I'm not sure I understood what path the little buggers where looking for exactly.

    • @hadracks
      @hadracks ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the pathfinding is referring to the dwarves deciding which direction to go. On an X they usually have two options in ascending/ descending with a max of 5 options if they are in the middle. On a 3 X 3 they always have 9 options at each level which is 1.8 to 4.5 times more options. That could make a difference with a hundred dwarves walking up dozens of levels. On the negative side is that in the X they are more likely to have to crawl over each other.

  • @KrazyKaiser
    @KrazyKaiser ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would like to point out that when you are searching though your stocks for "X" it's returning clothing that that has "X" in the name of the material (Ibex leather), but not actually searching for "X(clothing name)X". Very frustrating, but I don't think there is currently a way to sort specifically for worn out clothing.

      I had something similar happen with my fort earlier this week. I had sealed a forgotten beast in the caves (a giant quail with fire breath), and that was going fine for a few years. Then a force of cavern dwellers (batpeople) appeared on that side of the cave, and got into a huge fight with the beast. Framerate went down to like 1 fps, the interface was very laggy, I couldn't click on anything, it took multiple attempts to get the pause button to even work. The forgotten beast had fought and destroyed the entire 20+ force of batpeople, and fire was everywhere.
      Oddly, when I saved and reloaded, everything was fine. The fire was still spreading and the cavern dwellers were dead, but the framerate was back to normal. So whatever it was, reloading the map fixed it.

    Really? Frame rate death doesn't happen anymore? Check out the steam forum. This is a bigger and more current issue than you think.
    I've been battling for to keep my FPS above **7** for 3 campaigns once I reach around 100 population. It kills me each time. I've tested this on 3 separate computers and have similar results, with my newer laptop trouncing my way more powerful desktops.
    I have a 9900k, 6900xt, 64 gigs of ram--and in a default 4x4 world from the start, the max FPS I can reach is 30-40. Your FPS with 200 population is anywhere from 5x-10x better than my fps with 6 dwarves. I have spent maybe 15 hours trying and testing things, testing different systems, configurations, settings. And it's all the same.
    I took a game with low fps, I killed all my dwarves and destroyed nearly every item--and it didn't change the fps. There's something else going on.
    By the way--not using compressed saves about doubles the save speed I realized.
    So yesterday I bought a 13900k cpu/motherboard. The things I go through to be able to play!
    PS, love your videos. You rock--I've never watched more videos on how to play a game in my life.

      Thank you! I think the disconnect here is my definition of fps death. Back in the day it was inevitable. The game would gradually slow untill it was unplayable. That is my definition. Currently the game can have framerate issues however the vast majority of them are solvable or at least avoidable.
      When I talk about fps death I mean issues the game had pre ver40. These days it's almost always possible to save a fort with optimization.
