  • Not long ago, Marlin claimed their Model 39 platform as the eldest continually produced, shoulder-fired rifle of all time. Though that record ended when the Marlin brand was parted-off to current Ruger ownership, the rimfire world is anticipating a return of this beloved classic. Will some variant of the beloved Model 39 return to production under Ruger’s tutelage? And just why is there such high demand for this lever-driven classic? Guns.com takes a closer look at the life and times of the Marlin 39 family of rimfires.

My Dad has one of these. He inherited it (Along with a collection of other classic old firearms) from his brother who passed a few years back. It had been stored pretty well, but was still a bit dirty and grungy. I had the privilege to gently clean it and preserve it. It looks gorgeous in it's clean, all original state and still shoots fantastically.

Truly a work of firearm art! I own a Winchester 9422 from the 1990s, but wish I had one of these as well.

I bought my Golden 39A new in around Feb. 1968. In those days, beer and soda cans were made of steel. I used to drive out in the country with my rifle and a big cardboard box (size of a Xerox paper box). Out on the country roads near where I lived, by the time I reached a remote location, I had picked up enough cans to fill that box. I would then go out with my Marlin, loaded with .22 shorts, toss a can up into the air with my left hand, and soon was able to hit the can twice before it came back to ground. Of course, my eyes were a lot better then. Target acquisition with iron sights is slow when wearing bifocals, and the cans are made of aluminum now. So I doubt I would be able to hit one twice, even after putting some gravel inside to give it some heft. The rifle itself is still in excellent condition. The only wear is on the action surfaces, which are shiny from use.

Other than the gold colored trigger, what is different about the "Golden" 39a? Did it have other upgrades as part of the "Golden" model?

I have the Golden 39 A, manufactured in 1969. Bought it back then when I was in high school. Paid $98.00 plus tax in Lander, Wyo. in 69. My first refund from the IRS. You can shoot the bottom out of a coke bottle at 30' with it shooting thru the cap opening. It will beat a Winchester Model 52 all day long.Would make a good sniper rifle!

Excellent! Just got a Model 39. One of the Keys to the high level of this rifle, is the nice long stroke of the lever action, just like the larger caliber guns. A lot of 22LR lever actions, have a short lever throw, which is not as attractive or representative. God's Love, Mountain River Valleys!

Marlin should take that design and up scale it to larger pistol calibers

I think it would be to big and heavy. It really is one of the great 22 rifles. There's a good chance it's out of production for good now, I'm sure it's pretty expensive to produce .... Especially in comparison to today's ez to manufacture offerings.

This is just my opinion and forgive me for saying this but I have always hated the .22LR and most rimfires.
