Well Crossbows always allowed me to fire something one-handed, which at least left me being able to block right after firing, plus since it has no scaling and very little stat requirements, they can be used by any builds for decent overall damage when upgraded, especially those that happen to not have other means to attack from range. Glad to see a run that isn't all pain and suffering, but instead you had some good fun! Never realized how good crossbows could really be, so thanks for making this run! Might even use crossbows as a secondary to my melee characters in the future.
A few notes about this run, based entirely off memory because I'm too lazy to actually google/replay the game to double check. 1) The reason your mixed damage attacks are weaker is because for one, you first used fire against enemies with a slightly higher fire resistance than usual. Also because of how mixed damage works in DS1 and 3, where in a lot of cases mixing your damage is a debuff unless your elemental damage gain is a significantly higher. This is because when you attack an enemy, your damage is targetting two different resistances. 1st is your physical damage, which has different debuffs depending on enemy resistances. For example skeletons are strong against pierce, weaker against strike, and resistant against strikes. Then you have to get through fire resistance after that, which can lead to both damage types being nerfed over all. In DS1, elements feel like they're there to add scaling to weapons that don't have them (INT and Faith) or to add bonus damage to builds that don't get it (pyromancers having bonus fire damage) DS3, mixed element weapons are equally meh by comparison of flat physical damage weapons. 2) Elemental bolts, likewise have the same issue, where they become strong however is in mixing an elemental bolt with a maxing weapon, thus making the elemental damage worth while.. maybe. Crossbows are weird. 3) Avelynne actually is really amazing at stacking statuses like poison, bleed, etc. if you can get the weapon to do that damage type. I know in DS2 you can make Avelynne stack poison, bleed, and other such statuses. When you get to doing this challenge in DS2, I hope you mess around a bit more with that game's element/status systems because Avelynne and status effects is fun. lol Then again DS2 also has the broken element system, but that matters a lot less for bows compared to typical weapons. For example you can get a Heide Knight Spear, infuse it with lightning, while it is already a inherently lightning weapon, then buff it with sunlight blade, giving it even more lightning damage. Sadly, bows cannot be buffed, so they can't abuse this stupid system.
Something I always found neat was that the could be upgraded down paths, meaning you could make a Divine Crossbow to keep skeletons down from the first kill.
I don’t know how you do it, but you’re the only Soulsborne TH-camr that has made me laugh in multiple videos. I like your sense of humor, don’t change.
Take it with a grain of salt, but I’m pretty sure you can attack the crystal enemy in the Duke’s Archives cell and then bait them into accidentally hitting the snake guard, so you don’t have to punch it.
Your challenge runs have always impressed me, and this one inspired me to beat Elden Ring with only crossbows. To my surprise, Crossbows are actually kind of nuts. Especially when you mix Ballista bolts with Crossbow bolts. Anyways, amazing video!
While I might know the answer is yes because LobosJr did a 'Sniper Crossbow Only No Lock-On' run. I absolutely adore your video style and commentary and this is a joy to watch and listen to. Great vid!
"everyone" well guess I'm not a person then I have uh... 119 hours logged w/ mouse and keyboard? Mostly keyboard? Partly because I've never bothered to hook up a gamepad to my computer.
I have been running a light crossbow as my main ranged weapon to a quality build. Sure every crossbow does so much more damage. But since it shoots fast, can be used with a shield and is so lightweight makes it a great on hand side arm.
The advertising hook of the video's "protagonist" getting repeatedly and violently assaulted by another character is just so funny to me, this one especially, maybe I just like the timing or the sound of the bolt cutting him off. Kudos

Over quarantine, I played Dark Souls Remastered for the very first time. Turns out my brain VERY MUCH likes Dark Souls. Even with the comparatively clunky Dark Souls 1 moveset, I am REALLY good at this game. I first-tried most of the bosses, once I hit my stride. Sif, 4 kings, demon firesage, nito, even Papa Pling Pling Plong A.K.A. Gwynn Lord of Cinder all went down FIRST. TRY. And then on my next playthrough, I learned to parry. Aparrently, My brain REALLY likes Dark Souls Remastered. I hope to get enough progress on my book that I feel okay playing Dark Souls 2 and 3 soon, and I look forward to this video.
I used an Arbalest throughout my entire playthrough of DS3. It was an excellent ranged option to complement my strength build, since most bows only scaled off dexterity.
If memory serves, if you get Enchanted Infusion for the Crossbow, it will scale (very badly) with Intelligence. But that is if my memory serves. A lot of elemental infusions have the problem with dual damage. So to put it simple, lets say a weapon does 200 Physical (Piercing) damage and 200 Magic damage. Each enemy you attack with that weapon, will do the Physical damage minus the physical resistance to the physical damage type. So if they have a 50% damage mitigation against Physical (Piercing), then you will do 100 damage. Then you do the magic damage, which again gets reduced by the mitigation the enemy has towards the magic damage. So if it had 80% you would do 140 in total damage. Where if you had the same weapon with just physical doing 300 Physical Piercing damage, then that 50% means you do 150 damage. But Crossbows has always been a decent damage in range option for those who don't want to spend too much into bows or magic.
That's nice. And this time I really want to try to do this. What can be more relaxing than hanging out several meters away from danger and shooting crossbow getting yourself kicked every time you misstimed the shot. )
Miyazaki has officially stated that he's fine with players beating the game in any way they see fit. If you _can_ do something, you can do it, he doesn't mind. everything ive seen about crossbows implys they caused so much trouble in earlier builds that now the majority of thems main power is as that side arm you can bring. I think what really hurts for me personally is how few things increase the damage for crossbows, no flynn's ring synergy on any ranged weapon at all, and most painfully the changes to powerstancing crossbows. is there something im missing here, as im trying to figure out how a crossbow centric playthrough should go?
thank you lemon, i found one of ur videos 3 days ago and i’ve watched almost every dark souls video you have. never been more stuck on watching something ! thank u and please keep it up i need this content. love u
I always have a ranged option ready in Dark Souls, whether it's a bow, crossbow or magic, but damn son, I sure as hell wasn't expecting these numbers from the Avelyn.
That was surprising. Almost makes me want to do a crossbow run.
I've been doing one and has been a lot of fun but the grind is a bit boring tho
I've never used the crossbow before, and I was actually curious about them when the "Remastest" mod mentioned them (it's a really fun mod) but I feel like the crossbows are actually just fine the way they are. gonna have to take a crack at this run myself
The thing with seath not being weak to lightning i think it's because the that element breaks the drangon's scales, and since seath is well, scaleless, its not afected by them
I remember passing shrine of amana from ds2 with avalyn in damn ng+ easily. This thing is nothing but a monster.
I LOVE the Avelyn. im a hardcore fan of slings and crossbows, so to see dark souls 1 actually felt good alright with bolts is nice to hear!
I did not expect the crossbow to be a genuinely strong weapon for Ornstein and Smough
Been here scince 20k and man am i happy to say that with time your content only gets better
If you're gonna use lightning bolts, you need to ascend your crossbow to lightning.
In DS1, elements feel like they're there to add scaling to weapons that don't have them (INT and Faith) or to add bonus damage to builds that don't get it (pyromancers having bonus fire damage)
DS3, mixed element weapons are equally meh by comparison of flat physical damage weapons.
Manus could've been THAT EASY!?
I don’t know how you do it, but you’re the only Soulsborne TH-camr that has made me laugh in multiple videos. I like your sense of humor, don’t change.
lightning bolts are godlike with lightning avelynn. You made a regular avelynn that’s why
I like how he called gwyndolin them and they lol no controversy here 👍🏻 love it

Your videos gave me encouragement to try my own challenge playthroughs through dark souls, Thank you for your videos!
I like that with this you pretty much unlocked the hidden FPS mode of Dark Souls xD I may try that some day.
While I might know the answer is yes because LobosJr did a 'Sniper Crossbow Only No Lock-On' run.
I absolutely adore your video style and commentary and this is a joy to watch and listen to. Great vid!
Here's something for everyone :
Record your first two hours of Dark Souls gameplay using mouse and keyboard and watch yourself suffer
I played dark souls 1 2 3 100 achievements with mouse and keyboard
I played dark souls 1, 2, 3 100% achievements with mouse and keyboard. Ds3 is still in progress tho
The crossbow cheese made me kill the Nameless King for the first time so they will always have a place in my heart.
The advertising hook of the video's "protagonist" getting repeatedly and violently assaulted by another character is just so funny to me, this one especially, maybe I just like the timing or the sound of the bolt cutting him off. Kudos
Call me crazy, but I think you might be getting funnier! Good run!
That was not as awfully painful as I thought it'd be. Well done. Can't wait to see crossbow run for DS 2 and 3.
That… was surprisingly simple to do. Like, shockingly straightforwards
dont you know, dark souls is a very hard game that needs an easy mode.
@@marcosdheleno Its called watching these challenge runs, finding what he’s legit surprised works, and do that.
Not all games need an easy mode, its fun when things are difficult sometimes
@@Will-mk5pj i think you missed my point, i was making a joke.
@@marcosdheleno it would appear I did
All games should have an easy mode because games should be accessible to all. If you want a challenge, play on said difficulty. Don't be a chud.
The golden eye sound effects you added with the music was an amazing touch
Impressive work. (Also, wanted to say, I always appreciated how you use they/them pronouns for gwyndolin. It’s a really cool move!👍)
The only bad part of these videos is that there isn't enough of them.
Love them so much
I wanted to mention that I really appreciate you using they/them pronouns for Gwyndolin. It's ambiguous which pronouns they prefer, so it's the best option.
You people are pathetic lmao. It’s a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Who gives a shit. Even still, he’s a man so it shouldn’t be this big of a deal
Wonderful video. I recently stumbled upon your content, and I've been binging. Great humor and presentation, thanks for all your hard work!
14:21 I was not prepared for such a quick and abrupt joke and man did I love it.
I've used the crossbows on my strength builds because it provides range and elemental damage. Magic three shot, fire light, and lightening heavy
Great video. I love the Conner's Bad Fur Day heist music, always a classic.
It is amazing to me how many ultra endurance TH-cam content creators never mention chaffing.. it is something anyone who has done a marathon+ knows all about! Thanks for keeping it real. Followed you around the world and excited about this trip ..and ending the day with some beers was a nice way to ease back into the distance! Lol
16:59 well yeah of course he'd leave the tree parkour. It's obviously intended. That's why there's 2 nests
I know I'm 9 months late but I ALWAYS kill Smough first. Super Ornstein up close is easy too. You run to the back of the room where he doesn't have room to do his big sweeping attacks and all he'll do it the lightning butt-slam and the sit there and wait for you to slash him, rinse, repeat. It takes literally a few minutes and I've been exclusively doing it this way even back when the game came out in 2011. Beat O&S first try after hearing so much crap from my friends about how hard they were.
Pulley Crossbow in Elden Ring is also 3 round burst like the Avelyn, but you can craft your own ammo if you get the corresponding cookbook's. Stack status like Bleed/Scarlet Rot/Poison/Sleep/Frostbite
love the halo music in this video, kept the beginning super engaging
I like how you open up the video with the song Perilous Journey from Combat Evolved, goes with the shooter aspect of the challenge.
Really love the subtle halo 2 music in the background 🤌
Just binged most of the dark souls videos so glad I’m here when this came out!
This channel is the Discovery of the month. Thank you for concise and funny delivery.
Yo. Nother ds1 challenge! I love these! Thanks for making these!
12:44 Dam he used the spaltoon 2 soundtrack
Also, good video
Found you channel like 3 weeks ago and binge your stuff. Keep up the good work man
I love your channel and your attitude mate, new sub! I have been addicted to your challenge runs, keep it up!
Greetings from Spain!
just found this channel from your enemy within with one soldier video and god damn i love your humor and editing man good job!!!
Did this too, loved it, one of the more interesting runs for me in terms of setting up kit, grinding, etc
22:18 yes, please do monster hunter, love that game and would love to see what kind of challenges you come up with for that series
I used an Arbalest throughout my entire playthrough of DS3. It was an excellent ranged option to complement my strength build, since most bows only scaled off dexterity.
These are so well narrated and edited, thank you so much 😄
NGL you inspired me to do some weird as runs and enjoy dark souls alot more then I used to thanks man
Hearing your comment about Monster hunter got me thinking, a MH:W run with only barrel bombs and meowlotovs would be super fun to watch
Excellent video! I am very surprised you were able to get this out so quickly.
13:26 I lost over 70k souls at this bit because I didn't know you could just walk away from the one lmao
Fell in love with this crossbow great job Barnett
People always forget about the dark wood ring to make flips, to gain distance pretty quickly while having more invicibility frames. It helps a ton.
That's nice. And this time I really want to try to do this. What can be more relaxing than hanging out several meters away from danger and shooting crossbow getting yourself kicked every time you misstimed the shot. )
your videos are fun, i suscribed yesterday after watching a couple of your xcom runs, your dark souls runs are great too!
I’d love more of these. What about a run with weapons that are related to the word moonlight ?
Another super enjoyable video, keep em coming!
Hell yeah, a new Backlogs video! It always brings a smile to my face to get that notification.
5:46 I love how you get the claymore even tho ur not gonna use it at all, I always do that in "challenge runs" as well lmao
Miyazaki has officially stated that he's fine with players beating the game in any way they see fit. If you _can_ do something, you can do it, he doesn't mind. I don't think item duping and deathcam skips had been discovered at the time of that interview, so take that however you wish.
Another great video. I think the DS2 version of this run will be another fun one. Two words: Powerstanced Avelyns.
