Should be under $5 ... even that is a rip off considering what plastic costs. As you noted, BIC's are cheap enough, pack an extra BIC in a zip bag - problem solved.

except a plastic bag does not keep the button from being pressed during storage, or the body from impact in the cold.

I bought a couple of these. One for my daughter’s bag (she’s 13), and one for the “just in case someone joins us unexpectedly” bag.
Mostly because it will prevent the button from being depressed and the fluid leaking out.
I have multiple methods for fire in those bags (my daughter can use them all) but the bic lighter is the simplest way for a novice to start a fire.

I've got an orange Exotac firesleeve. I got mine when Exotac was running an awesome sale. It's very effective at waterproofing a Bic lighter. One caveat - when applying the cap you can sometimes get positive air pressure inside the firesleeve, which prevents fully seating the cap.

Yeah. One (or even two) small freezer bags will do about the same job for a fraction of the price. Or, you could get one of those larger UCO match holders for about half the price and store your Bic in there.

Cut a 2 inch section out of a road bike’s innertube. Rubber cement one end shut. Stretch the other end over the top of the Bic. Works for me.

  • @68thBC

They need to make one for the mini bic, it also works to prevent the lighter from having the button depressed so you won't accidentally deplete the gas

Hi Aaron. I use a Clipper lighter. Saw a review on it and I think it is awesome. It's refillable. The striker comes out so you can replace the flint. Since it comes apart, it's easy and quick to dry it out. Available at Walmart about the same price as a Bic. You should check it out if you haven't already. Possibly do a review on it. It's the Bomb. Thanks for sharing pal.

I have one and agree they are pricey for what you get. I'm not good at starting fires in wet conditions so I wanted it for wet weather. Paired with some type of long burning artificial tender, I have a good shot at wet weather fire making. The one I have is the orange model so I can find it if dropped and it has held up well.

2 things I did not see mentioned. 1st it protects the button from being puched during storage. 2nd, it protects the body from impact, more of an issued in the cold when the plastic is brittle.

Noticed you had trouble getting cap on! As another commenter had said, it’s because the positive air pressure that builds when trying to close the two pieces together. That’s why Pelican and other Good companies use small pressure equalizing valves. Now if they added a ultra small one to this piece it might then be worth $15. But as it sits. Yeah, No... thanks G for the review.

I bought one of these when they first came out years ago. Not sure but it might be like 10 years by now. Still works but my major issue other than price is size. One nice thing about a bic is the slim design and light weight can "disappear " in a pocket. This thing is huge and thick and really only good for neck or pack carry. On the positive side I have mine in my truck console with the original bic I put in it all those years ago....still fires up every strike, and appears full. I check it a couple of times a year or so when I clean the accumulated junk from my truck. ;).

there are 2 things he did not mention. it protects the body of the lighter which can be brittle in the cold. it also protects the button from being pressed and releasing the gas during storage. I do plan on buying 1, but just 1, for my survival kit.

A ziplock bag doesn't work when it's chilly and little frosty. And a lot of people like to carry their lighters in there pants pockets, this sleeve will work much more better than a zip-lock bag

Agreed Aaron. I wouldn’t pay $15 for two pieces of polymer. But I could see a kayaker or raft guide buying one of those and just getting cheap Bics instead of paying a similar amount for a waterproof lighter that may not last as long as the sleeve.

I finally caved and bought one....prices are even higher now...I think I paid like 16.95 or something. It's to worth it. I think a good value for this should be about $6-$8...Oh, and they don't include lanyards anymore. That sucks. I opened it and I was like "Wow, this should really have a lanyard or some way to tie the top to the case so it doesn't get lost. My advice would be to not buy at this price point. Just put your lighter in a small ziplock bag...done.

I keep all my sensitive fire starting equipment in ziploc bags and I carry more than one fire kit. This is more of a smoker's accessory than a survival thing IMO.
Bonus tip: if your Bic gets wet it still dispenses gas, so you could light it with a spark (or flame) from another source, just use tape or an elastic to keep the valve depressed.

I use an exo when I’m deployed. Does a zip loc bag keep a lighter dry for cheaper? Absolutely. But with the exo I don’t have to worry about the plunger being depressed and bleeding the gas, or my lighter getting soaked in the rain. Niche but I can count on it.

  • @nealgrey6485

Bic lighters are really bad for the environment. I use forever matches or the True fire stash. I especially like the forever match because even if I run out of fuel (I never have) I can still use the ferro rod to start a fire.

Wet Bic lighters are by no means a throwaway. They can easily be dried out and used with minimal effort. The only thing that appeals to me about this product is the ability to utilize a lanyard, etc and connect it securely to a pack or whatever. But the appeal isn't nearly strong enough to warrant the price tag.

Love your shows, Big fan from Australia. Get most of my info from you. You are the reason I'm buying my leeks and dividend knives very shortly. Always go by what you say, but on this one, I may disagree. I want one of these, and I will have to pay heaps for shipping I know. I think there is no use having a bic,(which I always carry, Sometimes 2 of them) if it doesn't light, because it's been wet or something. This would be the best investment ever. There is no use having 10 bics if none of them work due to water damage. Just one that works is worth way more than having even a thousand of them that don't work. Just my thoughts on this. On this one I think your very wrong. Sorry man........Damon

  • @nickgent3821

If you use a piezo lighter it is ALWAYS waterproof even if submerged and is the same price as a Bic. Never use a Bic for survival even with a cover as the wheel and flint is crap compared even to a gimmick item like a chinese webbing clip with a steel.
What is it about preppers and survivalists that make them such easy targets for sellers?

  • @HorsemanX72
    @HorsemanX72 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Looks worth it to me. The sleeve is worth more than the lighter, like a nice kydex sheath for a Mora companion. I guess if you carry 7 Bics with you and one craps out because it got wet, ok. But I would rather have one quality made in the USA piece of gear to keep my disposable Bic in. Is $15 really that much to have fire when you need it? Nah.

Waterproof? Why make a very unlikely problem into a BIG "thing"?
If one cannot even keep one of your three Bics that you (should) carry dry, then fall back on the ultimate final resort - Put the thing in a Zip-loc bag! For heaven's sake, it's not flaming rocket science! And, if there is enough air in the bag when you seal it, yes, it will float!

This is the problem with sooo much gear. Overpriced, overvalued, and often not really worth it.
My bic is my go to. I got matches that are waterproof, a lot cheaper than this wallet raping un need3d piece of crap. Id rather the old $2 version. And the old adage, profits are in volume not quality, well if it worx and is cheap even non outdoor/prepper types will buy one.
