The extra hilt length looks perfect tbh. I'm a 1st Deg Black Belt in HaiDong Gumbo (Korean Swordart) and a 3rd Dan in Tae Kwon Do, and while I LOVE using the Katana, the Bo Staff/ Wu-Shu Spear was always what I was most naturally talented with. I was that nerdy girl that started martial arts as a child literally because I loved Star Wars (well, also to deal with bullies since I was always a bit different due to being on the Spectrum ,and I had a monster of a father who inflicted every kind of abuse imaginable), so due to the SW reason, I focused on the weapon-arts as early as my Master would allow. I was very fortunate that my TKD Master was also a HaiDong Gumbo Master, and he came to America directly from S. Korea to teach the Korean arts traditionally. HaiDong Gumbo is NOT a common art to find taught in the U.S., and it's phenomenal at using most of the main weapons, from the Katana and Bo Staff, to Nunchaku, Tri-Part-Bo, and Tonfas. Since I'm 5'10", I had to use a Bo/ Spear that was 6 feet (you always round UP to the nearest foot above your height). I remember went I first picked one up, and I showed Master Park how I could spin it in front of me. I thought I was going to impress him, lol, but like most people who aren't trained, I was turning my wrists to spin it, rather than the actual technique required for the hyper-fast helicopter spins shown in the film Aquaman, for example (this is the technique for spinning in front of you, above your head, and around/ behind your body to back in front). He taught me how to turn the Bo fast enough so that you can completely release it under your other hand without turning your wrist to grab it, and the momentum will force it to revolve around your wrist and land right in your palm, without having to turn your wrist at all to catch it. It takes practise, but once you get the technique down, you can spin it SOOO fast, all around you, even toss it up into the air for a few roatations and catch it. Anyways! My point is, the length of this hilt for your saber looks much better for the proper spinning technique than most double-bladed sabers. You don't have to worry about the slight shifts side to side as it lands in your palm, which can make a smaller hilt wind up shifting so the blade lands in your hand instead. The better you get, the less it shifts, but it's still nice to have room to work with, and that extra length is perfect for proper gripping for the various strikes, without worrying about one of the blades touching your armpit or hip. Congrats on the awesome new toy! It's been a long time since I've held a lightsaber to enjoy and demonstrate with. I used to love how lightweight they were (compared to most Bo Staffs) and how their lights would appear as I spun them in the dark. Very fun. Enjoy!
Wow, thank you for the fascinating comment! I'm sorry to hear about your struggles in life, but glad you found some solace and comfort in martial arts and in star wars :). Have a great day!
That's what she said.
