      He is under revving it though, which is causing more strain on the engine. A few more revs would be much better and easier on the old girl.

    Those old D9 G models never run high RPM, if you have become accustomed to the newer hi RPM tractors you will be mistaken on how slowly the 9G operated. 1200 RPM makes a reasonable speed , and I have heard of some setting the RPM back to 900 to 1000 which I feel is too slow if hard work is being done.... . I have worked many shifts on those things in the cool night air, you can watch that stack get a bit red and have a fair amount of red in the exhaust smoke. Fine tractor

    Went on a service call a few weeks back. seen a fenced in yard with a d9g and a few d7s and 8's all pre '80. old man died and the family has done nothing with all the equipment. like they pulled them in after a job and left them.

    Max RPM's on most dozers will be 2300 at the very most. They usually average about 2k RPM at full throttle in gear give or take 100 RPM.

      ...1330 rpm...apparently the D9G was turned up from the 1200 rpm the old naturally aspirated D8s used to turn...

    Love the videos but you need to take the little lever by the steering levers called the throttle and pull it wide open. That's the way that engine is designed to run, not 1400 rpm.

    • @DOCTORDROTT
      @DOCTORDROTT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Dieselman8v92 looks like its running fine, not wasting fuel by speeding up the engine a few hundred revs and gaining very little productivety by doing it , black smoke and high revs is like chucking money in a fire, also prolonging engine and machine life.It don't earn money having its engine overhauled in a shop. Its like the tortoise and the hare story

    • @dieselman8v923
      @dieselman8v923 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, engines have changed a lot in the past 100 years. As the the diesel in that old girl, it was designed to run wide open like all other industrial and Ag diesels. It will consume less fuel and actually put less wear on it when operating it where it was designed to be ran. Now for your typical gas engine, your statement would be correct.

    • @DOCTORDROTT
      @DOCTORDROTT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dieselman8v92 Can't see how it would use less fuel at higher revs, my mate has two D9G and I work on 3300 hp diesel engines every day which have computer controlled engines so you can see fuel rate consumption in real time.The van I drive has a fuel rate monitor so I can instantly see MPG as I drive. I can understand if it was constant load, like generator sets. But dozers are not always constant load. Black smoke is over fuelling and wasted fuel and can wear out engines by the not propery combusted fuel washing oil off the bores, fuel diluted lubricating oil etc. , this D9 is running clear as it should do. Part of my job is taking engine oil samples for testing

    • @dieselman8v923
      @dieselman8v923 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what your saying but it all comes down to how an engine is set up. For example a new diesel engine in a truck is designed to run from 1800-2000 for best power and economy. An engine in a industrial or Ag vehicle is designed to run at full throttle for the best economy and power. An engine running below its power band with a load will work harder, use more fuel, and get hotter than when in its power band. If the engine is just running at partial throttle with no load, then it will use less fuel obviously and thats fine. Take this D9G for example, it was made to run wide open for optimal power and cooling conditions, working it at half throttle can make it get hot, and build up carbon. It just comes down to the set-up of the engine.
