- Greetings friends!
You wrote a lot under the video with bone frets that it would be interesting to try these frets with nylon strings. There were so many comments that I couldn't resist. Also, around this time I learned about the Malmsteen Nylon Stratocaster, and I came across a nice Line6 Variax on the web store.
Without thinking about it, I bought it and started preparing for filming.
I didn't really want to repeat myself, so instead of the usual bone, I used a knife handle blank from buffalo horn, I made some top nuts for the guitar and this material showed itself well.
So, I am happy to share the result of my work. Leave your comments, I will be happy to answer all your questions.
Thank you for viewing!
Would you like such frets?
Leave comments on this matter, leave your crazy ideas and maybe I will bring your idea to life...

Awesome 👏 Your thinking outside the box approach answers the what if questions in the repair and restoration of guitars 🎸 👍
Thanks!
So glad to hear Roundabout!)
Brilliant work.
I've NEVER seen black frets before, SUCH a unique look.
Thank you!
black frets matter
Please don’t make a mockery

@@alexcoronathey made turned it into a mockery. Shameful
Really great videos Sir. I appreciate no background music, it distracts and we want the working noises. Thanks for your videos!
Thank you!
I’d love to see frets made of like a CPM-3V or an M4 Tool Steel. They both have extremely high toughness and good wear resistance, frets made out of them would probably last forever lol.
There is a lot of carbon in this steel, I'm afraid corrosion will start
@@mr.k1t even more for people with acid hands like me :D
Benchmade will then sell them for $300 a fret
Never knew that's how you guys get the super glue to come out in such small quantities. Feel dumb now haha.
I was also looking up the smell from making a bone nut because I figured it's horrible and the apocalypse now part came up 😂😂😂
You seem to always make the most high quality string nuts ever.
Like it's his 'shtick'. I think he's a great builder overall, the patience of a Saint lol
just so uk I am watching you from beginning , keep growing mate :)
Thank you! i`m trying🙂
I’d have those on a slide guitar they look great 😊
I wonder what these would look like on a solid black ebony fretboard. Is black on black metal?
Ultra jumbo frets. Oo
Tusq frets seem like a logical progression lmao
It could be🙃
They have a black teflon coating which would erode quickly
YEAH, Just slam that shit up on the table. Throw it!
думав, що канал американський, поки не побачив ті українські субтитри
maybe next time damascus steel frets in the same style?😏
Or maybe Damascus fretboard?🤫
Beautiful build. How do you amplify the nylon strings? I’m assuming that is what that chip was, but I am not familiar with it.
Its a Variax, so each one of the saddles is a piezo pickup. Line six uses this to do all sorts of crazy stuff with each individual string.
Piezo pickups translate vibrations at the bridge to an electric signal. It doesn't require metal strings, since Piezo pickups aren't magnetic.
Everyone is right
Tungsten carbide frets please. When I was young I researched the shit out of materials 😂 and came to the conclusion of that being the perfect fret and bridge material. I was probably wrong.
How do you suggest I process this?🤔
@@mr.k1t it is a challenge. May I say a silly idea? There might be a way to make them from dust to the right shape. Then diamond files. I'm terrible at actual DIY stuff.
You could buy 1/16 in tungsten carbide bar. You could get someone to water jet the rough shape and use a grind wheel for detail.
Чудова робота!
Дякую!
Ebony Frets? Like fretless but with frets😂 should be great for a bass
I would try it on a bass ukulele😉
@@mr.k1t i bet it will be cool 😎
Should have done that with an acoustic instrument. Only this way you'll hear the full difference between normal frets and bone.
Maybe in the future
Have a crazy idea: refret with barbed wire, flatened by hammering and worked in into the wood. Then cover it with a layer of eproxy and put normal frets in.
Uhmm…. maybe a dumb idea…🤔 Oh well, I comment anyway😝haha
Double frets, really crazy😅
Obsidian might make a good fret material. I saw the glass fret video and obsidian is black volcanic glass. I think theres other colors too.
great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! theyre are made of?????????????????????
Buffalo horn
this makes me want to try anodizing stainless steel fret wire.
I wanted to try it, but the anodizing is too thin and is erased by the strings very quickly
Do titanium frets :D
Ben Woods Nylocaster is much better than the Malmsteen Nylon Stratocaster.
I haven't tried either one
@@mr.k1t You can listen Ben playing Malmsteen Nylon Stratocaster, and his modded and improved Nylocaster on his channel.
I would love to order some for a PRS Tremonti. Where do I get them?
I’m in Ukraine, if you want to order something, you can write to me in instagram
Can you do epoxi resin frets? 🤔
Yeah, but it's too easy
@@mr.k1t well i think so!
Very cool!! Subscribed. Was wondering WTH you were doing with the fret blanks at first :) Great Job and look forward to more. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Thank you!
What if..... Pickup on 12th fret
What if the whole neck is a pickup?🤔
Winter is coming. What kind of heating system do you have there?
This is one of the strangest questions in recent times.
I think it is a joke in reference to the common joke "temperature is what effects sound" meme in the guitar community
Rocket fuel fires

Would bamboo frets work?
Too soft
Nice ! Now you have to do "random" stone fret 😁
I choose which mineral is better now🤔
Wow
it looks like a fretless guitar
Brilliant!
Good job 😊👍
Thank you!
Excelent work! You just kinda butchered roundabout tho
would it be possible to anodize aluminum for black frets?
Firstly, aluminum is also quite soft.
Secondly, Anodizing is a thin oxide film on aluminum that has changed its color, two or three passes of the string on it and this layer is ruined.
Now, I would make it from a black mineral, from agate or perhaps tourmaline
@@mr.k1t I think that would more than awesome. sounds like an insane amount of work though, but I would to see (and hear it).
I know whats wrong with it. It aint got no pick ups in it
Beautiful, and a clarification. This guitar has no magnetic pickups, but a piezo pickup instead. This is why he installed batteries for the preamp.
Amazing sound!
Thanks!
Have you tried using an ultra hard wood for frets? Like lignum vitae or Australian buloke. I've read lignum vitae is self oiling, so I was wondering how it would affect string bends. Might be super smooth.
I'm planning to try ebony, but I don't think it's the best option due to the moisture on the wood.
What is the name of this fret wire? Where can I buy them?
How low could you set the action and relief?
There is now 1mm on the first string and 1.25 on the 6th
@@mr.k1t 🤯 Great work!
How are you changing the chords at the ending?
Your videos are very good, it occurs to me that you could make gold frets, I didn't see anyone who has done it on TH-cam, they would look very beautiful, it would give the guitar a class and the gold may have the same hardness as the original frets
Thanks!
It's too expensive for me now
Maybe in the future or if somebody order it.
Con que lo pegan?
That was so satisfying to watch 😊
Thank you!
wait what hidden pickup?
It is advise also for bass guitar sir.?
oxidised blackened stainless steel frets would be cool using a bluing method
yes, but the coating is very thin, it will not last long
What about brass frets?
They are soft.
They were often used on Soviet guitars
Black onyx is hard enough and could be a good alternative.
I`ll try it
Did you put gun blue on them?!
That was so cool!
Can you link the type of pickup you used?
Thanks!
It’s “Line6 variax bridge piezo”
That looks nice. Would look awesome on an Ibanez RG
I wouldn't, I used these frets with nylon strings
Aren't those guitars pretty rare these days? Either way, it looks really cool!!!
Awesome
What are you wiping on right before your scrape the glue off the side of the fret
try cutting up welding glass ... black !
Maybe other way around? Titanium?
Already in progress
This was so cool! Do gold frets next!
it's too expensive for me right now😉
Maybe in the future
Great job! The smoke machine at the end made me laugh 😂
Thank you!
It's part of the show😄
