It happened the exactly same thing with me. I called Hotpoint and they wanted to charge £70 for the visit! I watched the video and fixed everything for a £10. Thank you!
the breakdown of our household was happening before my very eyes when i couldnt get the machine open and this video completely saved me thank you so much ‼️😭
thank you for showing your failed attempts and making me smile at my own frustrations - two days of trying to no avail and after watching your video, seeing I need to keep trying and Ive the door open!! Thank you so much!!!!!
Mate I used this video to both open and replace the handle. You legend. 100% hotpoint manufacturing this to break over time to make money on call out and spares!
What a star you are! Earlier today, my daughter phoned me up with this problem and , courtesy of your video and a bit of string, she managed to release the door at first attempt and rescue her uniform! Brilliant and thank you so much. :)
Thanks brilliant video and the string trick a life saver to get the washing out. We saved all the £££££££$$$$$$ from an expensive call out. Bought the handle part online. All done in 30 minutes with patience. I would only mention the screws surrouding the inside of the door didn't need to come out completely, although they do pop out as they have a covered tube inside the door, I only had to take out two screws holding the handle completely. You are an ace in our book.
Brilliant! It was a hell of a struggle, but seeing that it was equally a struggle for you, I kept trying. If you hadn’t shown the failed takes I’d have assumed my washer had a different problem and I’d have given up, so thank you for showing how much of a pain it is! Also for other people who may be struggling but who are convinced it can’t be anything but a broken handle latch, I didn’t have a long enough piece of string to go all the way in and to hold and both ends comfortably, in fact all i had was a length of wire, i tried about a dozen times pulling at different angles but in the end I grabbed a couple of pairs of pliers from my toolbox and grabbed either end of the wire with them, this made ALL the difference, I just tugged parallel to the door, away from the handle (basically just towards the left, I didn’t really pull forwards/away from the door at all) and as soon as I pulled the latch hard enough, the door opened itself, so you don’t have to pull both away from the handle AND away from the door, just away from the handle, the latch takes care of popping the door open. Good luck all! And thank you to OP for the video, I am very relieved I have access to my washer again, and access to the towels that were stuck inside it! Now off to eBay to buy a handle and save a pretty penny by not having to call Hotpoint, or worse, my landlord, only to pay an arm and a leg for a simple 10 quid repair!
You have just saved me. Thank you Thank you Thank you. I had given up already and got my hands pretty hurt. I decided to watch the video again to see what I was doing wrong and found your comment. Got it open using your method in 10 seconds
This comment also helped me! I'd fully given up, on the floor with major hand pain. Got my daughter to help with the pulling and got it open in not time. Handle is actually broken but I have insurance so until the engineer comes out, we shall be using the wire method! 🤣
Great it works! Our handle was completely broken off, needed two persons, one to prize the door a bit to get the string into the gap, a spoon handle pushed the string in. Felt very victorious when it opened on first pull ! Thanks very much.
This video made me laugh to the point i forgot I was upset about not being able to open my washer door! Thanks for the laugh and eventually the repair tip 😂😂😂😂👍
Thanks very much. I woke up this morning to a jammed door, tried the credit card and pull lever but both didn’t work. Watched you open it and had the confidence to try it myself and it opened in seconds. I used a think piece of material that I cannot describe other than it’s like a ribbon only wider and it just went through on the first go. I recorded it but like a prat when I tried to show the broken clip I stopped the video. Thanks for the hints and the new door handle is on the way.
Absolutely fantastic video!! I was panicking when our door wouldn’t open but laughing at the bleeps in this video took my mind off things and the trick worked. Love that you kept the failed attempts in as I knew not to give up when the string broke. Also found it really helpful that you tried to glue and screw it as that would’ve been what I would’ve tried so it was handy to see you try and it not work. Your suggestion to buy online and giving a rough price made it so easy. Fab work 👍🏻
I've just watched your video! Hotpoint cant come to me till next Thursday. Got the door open using the string like you did, opened it up, found the snapped peg just like in your video. Ordered the part should be here by Saturday to Monday. Thank you very much!!
Thank you so much for this. I also opted for the taking the door off method mentioned in the comments. For the sake of removing two bolts it was so much easier than faffing around with the door still attached. Also, if you take the lid off the washing machine it is also possible, and arguably quicker, to use a very small flat head screwdriver to ‘unlatch it’ from the inside. Thanks again!
Excellent video. My string broke a couple of times then it occurred to me to just double it up, so 3 lengths taking the strain rather than 1, worked first time. Now waiting for the new handle to complete the job. Thanks 🎉
Nice 1 mate. I’ve got a slightly different model but has the same handle/door. I found an old shoelace worked a treat without snapping. Thanks again 👍🏼
So I followed your video exactly but the door doesn’t stay shut for me? The hook/latch thing enters the hole but doesn’t catch anything, meaning the door won’t stay firmly shut? What should I do?
My Hotpoint model Wmxtf 942 exact same handle as this- same problem. Ordered handle on Amazon. Pretty easy to repair. String hack genius! We took the door off hinge which think might have been easier. Thanks for the vid. Watch the spring is in the right place when putting back together,.
Hah what are the chances, my washing machine handle just broke and the door wouldn’t open and what video pops up on TH-cam??!! The string worked great and I’ve ordered the new handle. Thanks for your help :)
Really useful video, thank you. I used two teaspoons and picture wire and made a garrote, and managed to get the door to pop open with ease, no repeateu broken string.
Really helpful thanks - and I hadn’t expected a video about replacing a washing machine door handle to make me laugh so much (with you not at you) so thanks for that too!
Your a genius, thanks for this video. I got my door off in seconds, I used a bit of thickish elastic that I had in my sewing drawer. I have not ordered the part yet as I don't know what I'm looking for, but I'm sure I'll find it. Thanks again. ☺
Thank you very much! Washing machine is now open, door off, new handle ordered online. The following things didn't work in the unlocking process; crochet yarn, picture hanging wire, ethernet cable. All snapped. The thing that worked thanks to an earlier comment was ribbon.
You sir are a LEGEND! I’d already started looking at new washing machines when I found your video. Ten minutes and the door is open and I’m off to ebay to order a new catch. 👍 Update: Parts arrived and the machine was on and washing within 10mins. I did need to take the door off in the end as it was too fiddly trying to get the glass back in along with the door front.
Nice to hear a sense of humour. Thanks for your help getting the door open. I ordered a replacement. In the mean time I went with option B . . A repair involving superglue and tissue paper. I’m surprised it made a strong bond and still going strong. Might start a tally board for how many days the superglue lasts. Maybe that’s what hotpoint should have done in the first place.
So thank you, Sir 🙌!!! YOUR IDEA WAS GENIUS! Again, thank you so much! I also got a piece of solid string; it almost cut my fingers pulling it, but it didn't break at all 💪💪💪
Great honest video showing how it always goes with these things. I feel your pain re the gaming fella!! My handle arrives tomorrow so will Let you know how it goes.
Great video! A raspberry pie in the fridge to automatically order beer would be a topic idea. If my wife sold all my retro stuff, I’d put her up for sale!
Thank you. Your video helped us open our door. A different machine but very similar. We managed to get it open and our washing out. Very helpful thanks :)
Thank you dude, thought I’d have to pay out but followed your vid and stringed the door open (only 2 snaps) and got the part for £11 on next day delivery from Amazon. Found myself shouting beep when trying to line the glass up when refitting.
I needed the failed attempts to come afterwards because it was stressing me out. Keep seeing you failing when I was failing as well lol I’m still going on mine
Watch video great info, I nearly pulled the door off before.. was looking for string when had a idea we have a thin nylon dog lead about 12 mm wide x 1mm thick Made it so easy honestly slips around very easy and easy on hand , pull parallel to the door , thanks for your info
My handle came off without having to take the glass out. Edit: But you still have to loosen the rest of the screws for the bar on the handle to fit inside the groove within the door, thanks for the video, it helped a lot.
Just had the same thing 😔. Managed to get door open using a length of 16/0.2 gauge wire instead of string. Door opened but I did need to push the door with my knee a couple of times with the wire tight and it opened really easy when knee pressure was released😁. Thanks ,would have had no idea without this. I agree that the moulded plastic pillar is a deliberate weak point. The springs force makes it irreparable without making a new pillar and having a small coach bolt visible on the front of your door. I just ordered the part as it's pretty cheap.
Literally had the EXACT same issue tonight. Huge stress raiser having that latch spring back and strike that block every time. I bet a shed load of people have chucked their machines cos of it
My Hotpoint wasn’t draining,a guest in my holiday let has tried to open the locked door and has snapped the latch just like this. Filter cleaned and now drained, door latch ordered.
Thanks, helped me get the door open. I used dental floss and it was very easy to open the door with. Would recommend over string. Just make sure you wrap it round each hand plenty of times to take the pressure off it digging in to you.
Absolutely perfect!!! I am a hero to my wife as all her work clouths inside…. However, can you do a follow up on how tell her that she has snapped it by yanking so so so hard when it obviously was stuck… without my murder or high pitch ‘there was noooooo way I broke it’ many thanks
haha, you stay so calm Chris. What I usually do is open the back of the machine, climb into the tumbler and push from the inside. Door pops open just like that. Only works on april first though.
LOOOOL =D I was considering pulling the washer out and removing the back to see if there was any easier way to get in there! I learnt something doing this repair I guess - to next time just call the repair man lol.
If you still cannot get into the machine it could be the lock that is faulty - please see my follow up video. th-cam.com/video/U7oXju2Rf7E/w-d-xo.html
okay sir
It happened the exactly same thing with me.
I called Hotpoint and they wanted to charge £70 for the visit!
I watched the video and fixed everything for a £10.
Thank you!
the breakdown of our household was happening before my very eyes when i couldnt get the machine open and this video completely saved me thank you so much ‼️😭

Great video for someone who is not in this trade and keeping it real, by showing how a rookie will go about it & getting the job done .
Absolute legend went in the kitchen like a boss and got it in 1 try looked like a right genius in front of the Mrs
Legend!
Just did same but I sweared more. Top man!!!
@@jonnywhitestar5046more than this guy?😂

Great video.l, thanx . Bought part locally for 12.50. Followed your first class instructions. Avoided 129.00 call out fee.
Thanks brilliant video and the string trick a life saver to get the washing out. We saved all the £££££££$$$$$$ from an expensive call out. Bought the handle part online. All done in 30 minutes with patience. Thank you, your perseverance made me get on with the job and get it open. Now I'm going to order and fit a new handle.

I had totally same problem and I solved it thanks to your instructions. Added one screw and problem is solved.
Great it works! Our handle was completely broken off, needed two persons, one to prize the door a bit to get the string into the gap, a spoon handle pushed the string in. Felt very victorious when it opened on first pull ! Thanks very much.
Glad it helped!
Great video, enjoyed all the beeps !!! Clear view on how to resolve the problem, saved me a lot of time and head scratching. Thanks 😁
Managed to open my door with a piece of string after watching your video. Thanks so much for showing it
This video made me laugh to the point i forgot I was upset about not being able to open my washer door! Thanks for the laugh and eventually the repair tip 😂😂😂😂👍
Haha =D
Thanks for the video! Managed to open it, and fix the lock. Glued back the plastic peace and hammered a few metal studs in it, works perfectly.
Fantastic!! Just did it and opened the door, your a life saver.
You’ve just got me out of a big mess, what a genius, this video is priceless.
Absolutely fantastic video!! I was panicking when our door wouldn’t open but laughing at the bleeps in this video took my mind off things and the trick worked. You are a living legend! Came in clutch 6 years later 😄
I've just watched your video! Hotpoint cant come to me till next Thursday. Got the door open using the string like you did, opened it up, found the snapped peg just like in your video. Ordered the part should be here by Saturday to Monday. Thank you very much!!

Great stuff pal, I really appreciate the way you fixed it and not like others that make it seem easy. Thank you
No problem 👍
Excellent video. My string broke a couple of times then it occurred to me to just double it up, so 3 lengths taking the strain rather than 1, worked first time. Now waiting for the new handle to complete the job. Thanks 🎉
I tripled up on the string too, and worked!! Great video!!
Dude I have a most recent model, but the latch broke and it wouldn't open. You sir, are a life savior!
I was breathless after pulling the string for like 20 times, but I succeeded LOL, thanks for the video
Perfect worked straight away but I used thin washing line with metal core . Thank you so much 😁😁
Spot on mate. I had to double up the string but got it open in the end. Thanks.
It sounds like either the lock is damaged and needs replacing, or the catch on the handle isn't fitted properly.
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much I been trying to open the door for three days but I didn’t be able to open it if I didn’t see your video, thank you
No problem 👍
Thank mate ! I fixed mine by checking out your video and completely agree that it has been designed to fail.
BRO HOLY - third Try THIS REALLY WORKS - I used an old charging cable
Thank you for this, I was on the verge of getting the angle grinder out and opening it for the last time.
Hah what are the chances, my washing machine handle just broke and the door wouldn’t open and what video pops up on TH-cam??!! The string worked great and I’ve ordered the new handle. Thanks for your help :)
Haha =D You're welcome mate! Glad you could fix it!
Got quoted 80quid to fix my washing machine. This saved me quid. Cheers lad!
Really useful video, thank you. I used two teaspoons and picture wire and made a garrote, and managed to get the door to pop open with ease, no repeateu broken string.
A true gentleman and real. After watching loads of "it's just this simple" videos yours is the only one that actually helped!
Thankyou ! Our hooky bit snapped and so did the flimsy plastic grove you showed. This was very helpful
To replace our new handle
Really helpful thanks - and I hadn’t expected a video about replacing a washing machine door handle to make me laugh so much (with you not at you) so thanks for that too!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your a genius, thanks for this video. I got my door off in seconds, I used a bit of thickish elastic that I had in my sewing drawer. I have not ordered the part yet as I don't know what I'm looking for, but I'm sure I'll find it. Thanks again. ☺
Brilliant! Worked when all else failed. Thanks
Thank you very much!
Washing machine is now open, door off, new handle ordered online.
The following things didn't work in the unlocking process; crochet yarn, picture hanging wire, ethernet cable. All snapped.
The thing that worked thanks to an earlier comment was ribbon.
Brilliant video, your directions worked a treat - both the string and the fitting of the new handle! Thank you! Ps- I swore a lot more than you did!
Glad it helped!
You sir are a LEGEND! I’d already started looking at new washing machines when I found your video. Ten minutes and the door is open and I’m off to ebay to order a new catch. 👍
Update: Parts arrived and the machine was on and washing within 10mins. I did need to take the door off in the end as it was too fiddly trying to get the glass back in along with the door front.
Fantastic =D
Helped me relocate spring in correct orientation. Thank You.
Thanks a lot! Worked first time with a shoe lace
Your the man open door thanks keeping the wife off my back
This works, thanks for the video my door is now open, now time to fix it
Thanks for the video. This made it simple for me. I used a twisted pair of cat 5 cable. Adding it to my CV ...Hotpoint appliance engineer 😉
Legend, saved me a load of time and money! Thank you for uploading the failed attempts too so I didn't feel so bloody useless
No problem 👍
Thank you, i used a shoelace and it worked!
So thank you, Sir 🙌!!! YOUR IDEA WAS GENIUS! Again, thank you so much! I also got a piece of solid string; it almost cut my fingers pulling it, but it didn't break at all 💪💪💪
Glad it helped!
Fantastic video!!! So helpful to have a real life experience doing this rather than one that looks all perfect for the video.
Great honest video showing how it always goes with these things. I feel your pain re the gaming fella!! My handle arrives tomorrow so will
Let you know how it goes.
Great video! A raspberry pie in the fridge to automatically order beer would be a topic idea. If my wife sold all my retro stuff, I’d put her up for sale!
Thanks =D Haha @ putting your wife up for sale!
Thank you so much it is very helpful 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much. I did manage to fix the same problem in minutes only because of your video and instructions.
Worked first time. Used 1.5mm strimmer wire. Thanks.
You saved me getting a new washer. Thanks!
You're welcome!!
I needed the failed attempts to come afterwards because it was stressing me out. Keep seeing you failing when I was failing as well lol I’m still going on mine
Watch video great info, I nearly pulled the door off before.. was looking for string when had a idea we have a thin nylon dog lead about 12 mm wide x 1mm thick
Made it so easy honestly slips around very easy and easy on hand , pull parallel to the door , thanks for your info
😁 👍🏼 Thanks mate. Got mine open after watching your video. I used thin pvc coated copper wire. Cheers 🥂 😀
Great 👍
The only video that actually helped me do it ! Thanks
My handle came off without having to take the glass out.
Edit: But you still have to loosen the rest of the screws for the bar on the handle to fit inside the groove within the door, thanks for the video, it helped a lot.
Thank you for the resolving the issue, I have used a USB cable and it was much easier to open.
Thank you ....it worked first attempt ❤
Bro I need to get my clothes out asap!!! Save the bloopers to the end 😂.thanks!
Thanks for helping me fix my washer !
No problem 👍
Thanks very much. Used strimmer line. If you super glue with polystyrene inserts, then it will be strong enough to work.
Thank you, Im useless at DIY but managed to change handle watching this video 👍🏼
I succeed with you method!!! Thanks a lot from France ❤
Exact same thung has happened to my door handle great video had to laff at the string trick .So i tried wire or nylon string worked first time .Cheers
Thanks I had no string and was going to go and buy some until I seen your comment about using floss! Worked a treat thank you !!
Such an helpful video! Thank you so much from Portugal 😃👍help a lot
I needed to try this today with my hotpoint aquarius WDAL 8640 door
Excelente video. Me sirvió. Muchas gracias, desde Argentina.. 👍
Haha nice one, I got it second time. Enjoyed watching the video you were dying to swear 💪
Thank you so much for your helping video
Thank you very much, worked a treat!
bloody string showing me up, ha. loved it Chris.
Thanks lol :o)
Life saver mate 👍I needed the beep machine too lol cheers
No problem 👍
Absolutely perfect!!! I am a hero to my wife as all her work clouths inside….
However, can you do a follow up on how tell her that she has snapped it by yanking so so so hard when it obviously was stuck… without my murder or high pitch ‘there was noooooo way I broke it’ many thanks
Great video, worked a treat.
haha, you stay so calm Chris.
I prefer to climb into the tumbler from the front and close the door.
... I mean, it feels nice and secure in there!
Thank you!!! Feel so clever!
Thanks really helpful, I have the same issue
Great video just done this on our washer 👍👍
Cant believe this actually worked. We managed 2nd go. The idea is its easy not to just pull but tug it and its open straight away.
thanks for this video its sorted me out in putting the spring in the right way cheers m8
